Flac to alac conversion

I have a large library of FLAC files that I've been trying to convert to ALAC so they can be stored in itunes and play out to my hifi and radio/player.
My itunes library is stored on a Buffalo linkstation 2TB NAS that also runs itunes server to allow DLNA equipped devices to access it.
My Marantz hifi streams mp3,flac, alac and other formats as does my Revo supperconnect radio/player.
I've tried just about all the flac convertors I can find for win 8.1 and though they all convert the files and those files show up in and play in itunes on the laptop.ALAC's that have been converted from flacs will not play on either the hifi or radio.
This is odd as if I import a cd into itunes as ALAC it plays fine on both the hifi and the radio/player.
Does anyone have any idea's of what the problem may be? or what software may work for me?

i use two programs when i use a converter  program on my computer it is free audio converter be aware it only converts to one lossless format besides and that format is wav because wav has not metadata you will you have to get the track numbers and add puncuation, removes the numbers infront of the track numbersand maybe get album name but a soon as you do that you go to edit then prefrences then import settings the click apple lossless or aac (you could also convert the files to aac within free audio converter so this is mostly for apple lossless) once you do that high light the songs then press create apple lossless version then delete all the wav files. there will be no loss in quality in this conversion because they are both lossless. if you want to convert with a program that converts very easy and converts it straight to apple lossless with no loss of track names get dbpoweramp. be aware this program cost money but is very easy to use and you can even rip cds in many formats. the link to free audio converter is http://download.cnet.com/Free-Audio-Converter/3000-2140_4-10893961.html
the link to db power amp is http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

  • FLAC to ALAC

    Hi!
I'm having some trouble with converting FLAC files to ALAC. I use the software "Fluke" to import it, and the built-in converter to ALAC. The result is a lossy file, even though it says it has the same bitrate. I have a very good ear, with education in soundtechnology, so i can hear the difference.
How can I convert FLAC to ALAC with no loss?

    Hi Dave,
I am starting my second or third round of research on how to convert a large library of FLAC formated album into some high fidelity format specifically to sync to an iPod for use while on the road ( my car, my cabin, my other house, etc. - these are just ideas but you get the idea ).
Just now I tried Max again.... I can figure out which of the format is actually a lossless format that will work with iTunes. I don't see ALAC in the list of formats.
I have also tried XLD which throws an error as it converts each track.
Flax seems to be broken with iTunes 10.1.1
I am not a technical audiophile but I am pretty much a computer expert, certainly a very experienced Mac users for a decade or more.
This is really making me crazy. Can you or some other user who has done FLAC conversion to iTunes very recently please let me know what trick is to get one or the other app to do the right things.... 1) convert to lossless format ( either directly compatible with iPods or 2) also automatically creates a compatible format for iPods, iPads, iPhone, iETC....
I would like to do this mass conversion right the first time - commercial software is fine ..... doesn't have to be freeware or shareware. I just need it to do the busy work and do it well.

  • How can I convert FLAC to ALAC with no loss?

I am looking for a reliable and relatively easy to use software or app to convert FLAC to Apple lossless so I can import into ITunes.  I have searched far and wide and cannot get a straight answer.  I am  using an IMac and I just want something that will do this relatively simply without blowing up my shiny new Mac.

  • Help with converting FLAC to ALAC while retaining metadata and cover art

    Hi,
I've decided to embark on the long trek to convert my 18k+ FLAC music library into ALAC. I've decided on ALAC for mainly 2 reasons: iTunes/iPhone/iMac/Sonos compatibility and my desire to keep with a lossless format.
My library is pretty eclectic; I have quite a bit of classical music along with many other genres. I have spent quite a bit of time maintaining the correct tag information; I do not want to lose any of this info that I've painstakingly added to my library over the years. The tags that I use on my FLAC files are:
    Filename
    Title
    Artist
    Album
    Album Artist
    Disc Number
    Disc Count
    Compilation
    Comment
    Year
    Genre
    Track
    Composer
    Orchestra
    Conductor
    Performer
    Length
    Modified
    Path
I want to be especially sure that I maintain the data in Composer, Orchestra, Performer and Conductor in my migration to ALAC. I also want to include my CD art in each track (many of which I had to scan since some of my CD's are not available for sale). The CD covers are stored in a "folder.jpg" file in the path of each CD's contents. I would really like the automated conversion process to pick up each "folder.jpg" and embed it in the appropriate tracks.
I have a license for dbPowerAmp, so I can do the conversion on the Windows side if need be (I have BootCamp set up and use Fusion), but I would prefer to do everything in Mac.
I am hoping that some of you good folks will offer up comments about the feasibility of this endeavor, and advise me on possible tools to use, paths to take, pitfalls to watch out for, etc.
    Thank you for your time.
    Mike

I finally got done with the conversion. It took 2 weeks running XLD of 24x7, but at last it's over with.
I first used iTunes "download missing album art" to start the process. It populated about 50% of my collection, but I found that many of the album art was wrong. For instance, with collections (various artists) it populated the album art from the first track; with others, it put in the wrong album cover for the right CD. These were mostly because iTunes would get a contemporary cover, where my cover was from an older pressing of the disk.
I purchased a program called TuneUp which has helped with my missing album artwork, and also with correcting typos. But even with using TuneUp, I probably have a couple of weeks worth of work left to do.
Then comes the renaming of the Classical music tracks.

  • What is best way to convert flac to alac and use metadata

I wish to convert my FLAC collection to a lac so as to use on my iPod etc. Have tried using numerous App Store apps - all truncate tracks and will not use track etc data in the conversion to be usable in iTunes
    Any advice appreciated.

  • FLAC to MP3 Conversion (Stereo or Joint Stereo)

    Hello Again :
I regularly concert FLAC files to 192 kB MP3s using dBpoweramp Music Converter. This program's default / auto setting is Joint Stereo, as identfied in the "iTune | Get Info" option. Generallly, what's better : Stereo or Joint Stereo? I would very much appreciate if someone could clear this up for me. Thanks kindly.

The commands are straightforward. All they are doing is creating a local subdirectory in the usr directory, and then a bin subdirectory in the new local directory, so you'll be able to load the software and not have it overwritten/destroyed when a new update comes along. That's good practice.
The warning you're getting is standard operating procedure, the first time you execute the sudo command. Just take your time and follow the steps. Note, after you enter the sudo command, you'll get back Password: which requires you to enter your admin password. Do it slowly and carefully, then hit the return key. Don't worry if you muck entering the password, you can try three times.

  • Stereo vs. Joint Stereo (in FLAC to MP3 conversion) ?!

    Hi friends :
I often convert lossless FLAC files to MP3s at a constant bit rate of 192 kb/s. I then import the MP3s into my iTunes library.
I have tried two different FLAC converters: Switch Sound File Converter (Lame 3.82) and dBpoweramp Music Converter (Lame 3.98). The audio quality is virtually the same. However; the converted Switch files are in "Stereo" while the dBpoweramp files are in "Joint Stereo."
At a bit rate of 192, which should sound better : the Switch-created MP3s in Stereo, or the dBp-created MP3s in Joint Stereo?
Basically, which is better ... Stereo vs. Joint Stereo ?
All of the different articles on the Internet leave me confused. I just want to choose between the Switch and dBpoweramp converters.
Thanks for any help at all.

  • Flac files converted to alac have muddy sounding bass?

I'm a noob audiophile and I was wondering why it is that when I convert a file from flac to alac that the bass sounds so muddy. At first I thought that perhaps it was because I was mainly using the built in speakers on my MBP and that they couldn't handle too much bass. I tried switching speakers, headphones and earphones and nothing solved the problem. Then I played the original flac file using the songbird media player (it has bit-perfect playback) and I noticed that the flac files sounded much better and had none of the muddyness in the bass that the alac files have. I've read on some forums that an iTunes plug in of some sort might solve the problem but I've not been able to find anything that pertains to solving my problem. If anyone could either explain to me why it is that this happens and/or suggest a solution so that I don't have to use two differnt media players (I'd prefer to stick with iTunes but it doesn't have native flac compatibility) I'd be most appreciative. I have tried using Fluke but didn't like it since I have to open iTunes in 32 bit mode to use it and it seems to make iTunes lag when navigating through songs.

    Andar,
The plug-in you probably heard about is Xiph.  It is far from trouble-free, but you can check it out here.
It is possible that whatever you are using for conversion is soing something not quite right.
I assume you have verified that native ALAC files (ripped directly from CD to ALAC, or purchased in ALAC format) do not have this problem, and it only applies to ones that were converted from FLAC?

  • FLAC ALAC: Is there a perfect app?

    Hi all,
Going through my library converting my FLACs to ALACs and I am trying to find one app with all of these features. I do NOT necessarily want the resulting ALACs to end up in my iTunes media folder or library:
    (Obviously) Convert FLAC to ALAC
Be able to create tags from file names
Be able to rename the converted files from tags
Put the resulting files into a new folder structure like Artist Name/Album/Tracks
Look up and add album artwork
I've tried Max, XLD and a few others but I have yet to find the silver bullet. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Dovetailer,
ALAC has relatively little acceptance outside of Apple-land, so you may not have a ton of choices.  Besides the ones you mention, take a look at dBPowerAmp.  Can't promise it's a silver bullet, but at least it can convert to ALAC.

  • How to read FLAC and Ogg Vorbis

    Hi,
actually it's not possible to read my flac files from iTunes, so I can't directly transfer these files to my Ipod. I'd wish my ipod classic to read natively flac format but I can't even recode to alac directly with iTunes.
Is there any other app to encode as alac which can read flac and transfer files to my ipod?

You are correct, iTunes cannot play or convert FLAC. There are plugins (Xiph) that allow iTunes to play FLAC, but they still will not transfer to the iPod.
Is there any other app to encode as alac which can read flac
For converting FLAC to ALAC, you can use dbPoweramp. If you wish to convert FLAC to AAC or MP3, there are several tools that can do so, such as Switch.
Add the converted files to your iTunes library, and then sync the iPod normally.

  • Converting "FLAC" and other Audio Format files from Vuze to iTunes

Good afternoon. I have a Mac Book computerthat I purchased about two years ago.  I have ITunes loaded on mycomputer. I use Vuze as a software program to download music and video toITunes.  However, it appears that iTunes will not concert "FLAC"and other formats of audio from Vuze. Can anyone recommend what free softwaresoftware program is preferable to use to convert the "FLAC" and otheraudio formats from Vuze to use in iTunes?  Thank you in advance for anyassistance you can provide concerning this issue.

I have used xACT in the past, and I now use Max for all my FLAC conversion needs. If you need to tag the FLAC files before conversion, Tag is basic but good.
For conversion inside iTunes you might want to check out Quick Convert from Doug's AppleScripts.

  • FLAC converting to M4A

I have the software to do so but ultimately I want AAC because the file size is smaller.  I have the option in my software of converting to ALAC or M4A.  Both of course are M4A files with the ALAC being a larger file.  Like I said, I take that file and convert to AAC in iTunes.  Is there a better way and am I losing too much audio quality?  Please help.

Yes, FLAC to ALAC is lossless, it doesn't change the audio at all - i.e., you could convert WAV (CD audio) to FLAC, to ALAC, and back to WAV and the 2nd WAV file should be bit-for-bit identical to the first one.
AAC is lossy - it is very similar to mp3 but uses a slightly different (claimed to be better) compression algorithm.  Its actually been developed as the successor to mp3.  At higher bit rates (256kbps or higher) the difference between mp3 and AAC is marginal, and audible differences are more likely to result from the encoding s/w rather than the algorithm itself.  If you want to use lower bit rates (less than 128kbps) then AAC may give better results (i.e., less perceived quality loss) than mp3.
If you want to convert from FLAC to AAC best bet is to do so outside iTunes - again Foobar2000 is one (of many) apps that will allow you to do this.  Foobar's AAC converter supports multiple modes depending in usage; with VBR (the best option for use with iTunes) you can select bit rates from approx 20 kbps up to 400 kpbs.  256kbps would be consistent with the "high quality" option for CD import in iTunes.

  • How to convert FLAC to Apple Lossless Encoder

    hi
How can I convert FLAC audio files to Apple Lossless Encoder in order to be able to import them into itunes and listen them in my ipod at maximum quality.
If you know a way to make the ipod read FLAC files it would be better but I'm not confident that this exist. I have just install fluke so itunes now reads FLAC. but not the ipod
    thanks

    What Are FLAC and ALAC?
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), as its name suggested, is a free lossless audio codec. FLAC can compress audio to about 50~60% without any quality loss. This format has been widely accepted by many Hi-Fi systems and audiophiles.
Apple Lossless, also known as Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), or Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE), is an audio compressing format, developed by Apple Inc. for lossless data compression of digital music. After initially keeping it proprietary from its inception in 2004, in late 2011 Apple made the codec available open source and royalty-free. Traditionally, Apple has referred to the codec as Apple Lossless, though more recently they have begun to use the abbreviated term ALAC when referring to the codec.
Here is a step by step guide on how to convert FLAC to ALAC. It also introduces a way to convert FLAC to many other audio formats like MP3, WAV, AAC, AC3, M4A, etc and vice versa.

  • Audiophile ALAC question

    Hi,
Linn offer hi def audio files, up to 192kHz Studio Master quality, as FLAC:
    http://www.linnrecords.com/linn-download-quality-and-file-type.aspx
Normally I listen to FLAC files in Toast, but Toast can only play standard FLAC quality. If I play 96kHz files, there is a snaring sound, and 192kHz files are converted to standard quality AIFF files.
I found that XLD.app can convert FLAC to ALAC, so I can play these files in iTunes. But I ask myself now: Can ALAC files store all the information contained in such a Studio Master FLAC at all? Or is such a quality beyond the ALAC's capacities?
    Thanks a lot
    Peter

ALAC is mainly designed for 44/16 encoding, and based on admittedly circumstantial evidence, I doubt it can handle 192/24. However, you are welcome to give it a shot. In general, iTunes is a consumer grade product and does not have features that would make it appeal to audiophiles.

  • IPod crashing with certain Apple Lossless files

So my iPod crashes sometimes when playing some ALAC files. It's up to date, I've scanned it, formatted it numerous times, and have done all I can thus far. read: I've troubleshooted. Can't figure out why it's crashing. It seems to like files that were recoded from FLAC to ALAC. They play fine in iTunes though. Whats the deal?
Also, when I enter my serial number into the warranty check form, it says it can't find the serial number...

I might have found a solution. I was having the same problem. FLAC files converted to ALAC would crash the iPod. I tried several conversion program without success. I finally tired Max 0.7.2b and it's working.
