FLAC to Apple Lossless

Any way to do this? I got a rather huge FLAC library from my PC which I want to convert to Apple Lossless so I can listen to them on my Mac.

After reading this post I decided to try XLD (X Lossless Decoder - website) and did the following steps:
I downloaded xld-gui-20120609.tar.bz2 from the site
I unpacked it
I executed the XLD application from that folder
in the preferences panel that popped up I selected 'Apple Lossles' as the output format.
under File - Open I chose the FLAC files I wanted to convert
done
It took me less then a minute to do so and worked on Lion. iTunes accepted the files.

how do i convert my whole library to flac or apple lossless?!!?!!?!?!?!

First, FLAC is not supported by iTunes and the same probably applies to the iPod.
Second, are all your files currently in AIFF or WAV format, or on CDs?  If you have mp3 files or AAC files the only thing that will happen by you converting them to lossless is you will use up more space for the music with no gain in quality.  Quality is lost when you convert to mp3 or AAC and converting it to lossless won't get it back.
It looks like current ipods support Apple Lossless.  Still, the whole idea behind ipods is to use compressed format so you can fit on the most music.  Read http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=85227
If after doing all that you still want Apple Lossless, you need to set the preferences to ALAC in your iTunes preferences, then convert with the Advanced menu command.  Mind you, I use an older iTunes so you may have to explore a bit to find where they have those features now.  This conversion will place a copy of the file in iTunes in the new format but also leave the old one there, so you'll need to delete the old ones if you don't want them.

  • FLAC vs Apple Lossless file sizes

I've been looking into moving up to lossless audio files. From what I've been able to discover, FLAC and Apple Lossless should be roughly the same file size, but I downloaded a 24-bit/44.1kHz FLAC from the Bowers & Wilkins site (about half-way down the page - search for Portico) which is 35MB. I transcoded it to Apple Lossless using Max and the resulting file is 62MB - 77% larger!!
Does this seem right? Is the compression level variable for FLAC and/or Apple Lossless (as there is for ZIP for example)? There's no such option in Max.

Hmm, interesting. MediaInfo reports the following:
    Apple Lossless:
    Audio
    ID : 1
    Format : ALAC
    Codec ID : alac
Codec ID/Info : Apple Lossless Audio Codec
    Duration : 5mn 34s
    Duration_LastFrame : -49ms
    Bit rate mode : Variable
    Bit rate : 1 484 Kbps
    Channel(s) : 2 channels
    Sampling rate : 44.1 KHz
    Bit depth : 24 bits
    Stream size : 59.1 MiB (100%)
    Language : English
    Encoded date : UTC 2037-05-12 23:52:44
    Tagged date : UTC 2037-05-12 23:52:44
    FLAC
    Audio
    Format : FLAC
Format/Info : Free Lossless Audio Codec
    Duration : 5mn 34s
    Bit rate mode : Variable
    Bit rate : 840 Kbps
    Channel(s) : 2 channels
    Sampling rate : 44.1 KHz
    Bit depth : 24 bits
    Stream size : 33.4 MiB (100%)
    Writing library : libFLAC 1.2.1 (UTC 2007-09-17)
So, same bit depth and sampling rate, but the bit-rate for the Apple Lossless is much higher than the FLAC.
In XLD I have "same as original" for bit-rate and sample frequency.
I've found some more free FLAC download samples at NaimLabel (panel on the right about half way down) and when I transcode these to Apple Lossless the files are the same size as the FLACs, give or take, so I guess these aren't as compressed?

Yes. However I personally find it easier and more reliable on a Mac.
For Windows considers the following, Foobar 2000 with iTunesEncode, I believe the free version of dbPowerAmp can also do this with a plugin. Other than that Super see http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html can do this and many other conversions but is not aimed at handling music files and as such is likely to not preserve the tags.
The best tool is XLD for Mac.

    hi
How can I convert FLAC audio files to Apple Lossless Encoder in order to be able to import them into itunes and listen them in my ipod at maximum quality.

    What Are FLAC and ALAC?
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), as its name suggested, is a free lossless audio codec. FLAC can compress audio to about 50~60% without any quality loss. This format has been widely accepted by many Hi-Fi systems and audiophiles.
Apple Lossless, also known as Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), or Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE), is an audio compressing format, developed by Apple Inc. for lossless data compression of digital music. After initially keeping it proprietary from its inception in 2004, in late 2011 Apple made the codec available open source and royalty-free. Traditionally, Apple has referred to the codec as Apple Lossless, though more recently they have begun to use the abbreviated term ALAC when referring to the codec.
Here is a step by step guide on how to convert FLAC to ALAC. It also introduces a way to convert FLAC to many other audio formats like MP3, WAV, AAC, AC3, M4A, etc and vice versa.

how to convert FLAC to Apple Lossless

Handbrake really is only for converting video and the audio attached to that video. With that said, there are many efficient ways to do this, personally, I am perfectly content just converting the file into a .wav files (it has the same 1411kbps), however you will have to re-tag everything. If you don't want to re-tag everything you can aslo just convert to .alac using Foobar2000 (Windows).
Also, if the reason that you don't want to keep it as a .flac files is because your iPod doesn't support it, if it is a Classic, then you can just install Rockbox and it supports .flac natively.

  • Apple Lossless "ineligible" in iTunes Match

    Hi,
so after successfully re-ripping most of my CDs in Apple Lossless and replacing the existing AAC files in my music library (thanks to fabulous Doug's Scripts), I recently purchased some high resolution music files and converted them from FLAC to Apple Lossless. The audio files show and play correctly as "Apple Lossless audio file" at 24-bit and 96k or 192k in iTunes. However, iTunes Match apparently doesn't know how to deal with them.
I searched discussions here and found a number of statements that iTunes Match should read and match music in Apple Lossless, match them with compressed AAC versions and use these compressed versions to play on mobile devices.
Any idea why the high resolution files aren't recognized?
Both albums exist on iTunes and should be matched.

What do you mean by "supported"? Supported to do what? Match it against music that's available on iTunes? Why not? I understand if iTunes Match wouldn't upload files with more than 24/48 resolution for their size. But if the album is known, it wouldn't have to be uploaded to be matched. So why this restriction?
    Maybe there's another (technical) reason?

  • I am downloading a digital album and i have to choose between apple lossless, flac, and high quality mp3.  i am using itunes and i have a pc running windows 7  does that make a difference?

I am downloading an album and I don't know which format to choose.  Flac, apple lossless, or high quality mp3.  I want to play it in itunes, on my iphone and i have a pc running windows 7.  Does that make a difference?

Go with Apple Lossless.  It will play readily in iTunes vs. FLAC.  You can convert it later to mp3 if you wish but you cannot convert mp3 to ALE or FLAC and get back the quality that was lost.  You can also convert ALE to FLAC if you need to.

  • Can't Import Songs To iTunes Using Apple Lossless Encoder

I have about 4,000 songs in FLAC format (which is a lossless format) on my external hard drive. I want to import them into iTunes using the Apple Lossless Encoder. I called Apple support and asked them how to do this, and they told me to go under "Preferences" in iTunes and chose to import using Apple Lossless Encoder.
I did this using Preferences>General>Import Settings, and then went to File>Add Folder to Library, however, it still imported my songs as AAC Audio Files. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

iTunes cannot read nor import FLAC files - not without third-party plugins, anyway, and I don't know of any that will allow iTunes to convert a FLAC file to another format - so I'm a bit confused as to the procedure you're following. If all you're doing is using the Add to Library command and choosing the FLAC files, it's quite possible that iTunes is misinterpreting the format and adding what is in reality an invalid link with erroneous format information.
If you have some sort of third-party plugin for FLAC for iTunes, please post that information and perhaps someone here can determine whether iTunes can do a conversion successfully.

  • How to play FLAC and Other Lossless Formats on iTunes for Windows Vista x64

    Is it possible?
    If so, how?

iTunes cannot play FLAC or any other lossless format other than Apple Lossless or WAV. If your tracks are in FLAC or another format, you'll have to convert them with another utility to a format iTunes can support: AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, or Apple Lossless.
    Regards.

  • How do i keep my apple lossless files when I use iTunes match?

When I started using iTunes Match, my Apple Lossless and aiff lossless files were converted to lower quality 256 files in iTunes on my mac.  How do I stop this from happening?  I want to keep the Lossless files as they are.
    Thanks
    Bud

    Sorry ......  but .....
Would it make a difference when I used iMatch ....  I started the service the day it was made available.  Was it an original issue and has since been corrected?
-iTunes and the music files were on my iMac internal Hard Drive.  Only 1 iTunes Library.
-No alternate iTunes libraries were created ergo match not turned on to an alterante.
-The original files were added to the iTunes Library from an external hard drive ... which were copied to my internal hard drive by iTunes.  (Advanced tab feature)  The external backup drive (4TB Seagate Mac Drive) is only connected when I use it to backup physical files.  I do not use a backup program.  Everything is copied its own folder.  Most files were ripped from my cd's i.e. to the external Drive using XLD.  Not one pirated file. a few HD albums purchased from HD Tracks.
-I even tried re-adding some of the Original FLAC files to iTunes again.  They were physical in my iTunes on the internal hard drive.  They were also replaced.
The fact is .... The Original Files were altered.  They had not been deleted and replaced, they were altered. They were the original files on my internal hard drive.  Only 1 copy of iTunes is on the computer.

  • Playback glitch while playing Apple Lossless in Mountain Lion?

I've been noticing some truly epic glitches while playing songs in iTunes. I just installed Mountain Lion yesterday, and I've had precious few problems so far. It seems to happen most often when playing an Apple Lossless format song, encoded from a FLAC using Audify. It's happened on several files.
Maybe I'm spoiled by how powerful my MacBook Air 13" i5 is, and I just need to return to the idea that I CAN'T do everything at once.
Playing the same song doesn't glitch in the same spot, so I don't think it's file specific. I'm thinking it must be throughput related.
    Anybody else seeing this?
    Thanks!
    Jim.

    Try removing the com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist
    Quit the application.
You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for the .plist. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist(s) from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist(s) to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.5. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Apple Lossless as a Movie

    Hi all,
I have recently bought an iPod 5G (not arrived yet), so I'm editing all my audio files, and I've noticed that Apple Lossless files (with .m4a file extension) are listed as Movie files. How to fix this problem? Will I have the same problem on my iPod?

If I understood right your question (I'm Italian), there's the info of the file from Windows Explorer:
    http://prntscr.com/3qsow8
    http://prntscr.com/3qsnhg
And this is the iTunes window:
    http://prntscr.com/3qsoji
Those files were originally FLAC, but I read on the internet that iPod doesn't read this file extension so I have converted the files (with a software called "Super") to Apple Loseless (hopefully the quality will be almost the same)

  • Mp3 to apple lossless conversion

is there any audio advantage converting mp3 to apple lossless in iTunes?
    Ken

No. You will get a much higher file size, but no additional quality.
The advantage of Apple Lossless (and other lossless formats like FLAC) is that it allows you to convert high fidelity sources (like CDs) to smaller file sizes without any loss in quality. This allows you to be guaranteed of CD audio quality, and it also allows you store a long-term archive of lossless file and convert them to different lossy formats to suit different needs, without additional quality loss.
If your source is lossy, like an MP3 file, than any additional fidelity that was present in the original source has already been lost. Apple Lossless will provide a lossless conversion of that MP3 file (meaning you won't lose additional quality, like you would if you converted an MP3 to an AAC file), but it cannot restore the already-lost information.
