Flakey LCD after adding thuderbolt drive

I have the latest version 17" MBP.  I have been using the mini display adapter to DVI to run a Gateway HD Display LP2407.  It works fine, but I purchased a G-Tech thunderbolt drive (8TB) and have a thunderbolt cable going from the mini display.thunderbolt port to the drive and with the other free thunderbolt port I plug in the mini display port to DVI to run the monitor.  It does see the signal, but is very flakey.  Every 5 seconds or so it wil take a hit, screen will glitch, some times dropping out the image for a couple of seconds or even creaing digital snow and then goes back to normal.  This seems to continually happen when connected.
Any work arounds to this?  Is this just a display not liking the whole thunderbolt, mini display to I'm a Mac thing?

Joe,
I agree on principal with using task manager and other tools to monitor and analyze resources, but you need to realize too that with only 6GB of RAM this technique might play some games with you. I use CS5 and the preferences / memory set up page only allows me to allocate up to 3GB less than the total amount of RAM. So, for my 24GB system, Premiere can allocate up to 21GB. With only 6GB of RAM, you are only able to tap into a max of 3GB of RAM for use with Premiere Pro. You are noting that you are not needing all of your RAM, but it could be too that Premiere Pro may want more, but it could be limited to only 3GB on your current rig.
Additionally, Win7 also utilizes RAM that is not allocated to specific programs or processes to help with disk caching. And, this disk cacheing seems to really help PPro performance, particularly renders.

Jim

  • System lockups/video corruption after adding hard drive

I have a first generation MacPro with an ATI video board. I recently added a 1 TB Western Digital "Black" hard drive, and I used Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate the first drive onto the Black HD, which is now my new boot drive.
Ever since I did that, my system has become quite unstable and locks up frequently. What typically happens is I'll get a garbled single row of pixels in random places on the screen, and then within a few minutes it will lock up if I try to do anything that is graphics intensive such as using Expose's active screen corders to show my desktop, or opening a folder with dozens of different icons (like the Apps folder). It /seems/ like the problem is compounded when I am using FireFox, but that may simply be because I use it alot.
After the lockup the only way to regain control of the machine is to hold in the power button.
I've even gone as far as removing the original drive thinking that perhaps the system might be confused and is pulling drivers or whatever from the old drive. That didn't help.
Any thoughts as to what is happening here? It's seriously driving me nuts (not to mention wasting a lot of my time constantly having to restart the system).

Did you run Disk Warrior before and after cloning?
    Repaired permissions?
    Re-ran 10.5.7 combo update?
I'd even look in system profile - memory and see if there are errors showing (doesn't show errors from prior system boots though).
Cleaned out the X1900; add copper cooling kit $29, or look into another ATI card.
Before using any new drive, zero it. And if you have Windows and the drive is backed up or before you put files on it --- do a complete and thorough zero and extended test in Windows using WD's own Diagnostic utility - much better, reliable, and does map out bad blocks while Disk Utility and other OS X tools rarely do. But any new drive... I've had 3 out of 6 need such treatment.
As a test, reboot back on your original why not? I'd have done that just to narrow down the possibilities.

  • Slow Boot after added hard drives in RAID 0

    Hi,
My Mac Pro used to boot very fast (from Bong to Login screen).
After installing a RAID0, it takes much longer to boot (x5).
When powering on, after the BONG, the grey screen appears and it seems frozen for a while ~30seconds. While grey screen is still on, I can hear the RAID0 hard drives finally waking up and starting to spin (I believe that they are the RAID0 hard drives because I can hear the startup disk just after the BONG). Once the MacOSX splash screen is displayed, everything goes very fast. Progress bar takes <2s to finally display login screen.
I suspect an incompatibility of the hard drives firmware with the Mac Pro even if those are very popular drives.
The Mac Pro is also sometime very slow to shutdown and when it occurs, I can hear the same sound of the drives waking up and starting to spin again.
I have disabled the hard drive sleep option in the power settings.
Here is my configuration. Disk4 has been added after the RAID0 and hasn't changed the issue. Please help.

    Regards,
    Guillaume

I am still booting off of the same drive as before I added the RAID so RAID disk doesn't appear in disk control panel but I went there and reselected my initial MacOSX installation folder on Drive0. It seems to have improved things quite a bit. Was it just looking for other boot partitions on all hard drives on startup? I don't know why this setting would have changed when adding drives into the box.
    Thanks.

  • Fans more quiet after adding hard drive

My G5 has a 250gb hard drive. When buring DVD's the fan came on like a jet. I added a 1TB hard drive, and the fans no longer sound like a jet when burning a DVD. Would this be due to the extra working space the 1TB drive would provide the system?
Thank you for any thoughts you might have in this.
    JB

If it was "added," I assume there are two hard drives in there now...
If you unplugged the Power Mac during installation of the new drive, you may have reset the power management (SMU), which made the fans work properly.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1436
The procedure is basically to unplug the Power Mac for a few minutes and plug it back in. One of the symptoms mentioned is fan noise.

  • IMac G5 Reboots spontaneously after adding USB drive

I bought a western digital My Book hard drive a couple of weeks ago and it seems that when it is hooked up my iMac will occasionally reboot. I reformatted the drive to mac format and have done a couple of backups. It appeared to be related to sleep so I turned sleep for drives off. It seemed to lock up when an operation was complete. Has anyone seen this problem and are there any ideas for a fix. Could it be a problem with the drive? The drive appears to work fine whenever I use it.

It completely died on Saturday evening while my wife and I were out to dinner. One of the discussions over wine & pasta was getting another mac (A macbook). My wife was tired of waiting to use the mac, she never wanted to use my pc. I came home to a dead iMac. It has the dreaded bulged capacitors and had given up the ghost. Luckily I'm covered so I'm hoping to get it back within the next few days. We went ahead and got a macbook so it isn't all bad. I'm loving this tiny little mac..

  • Issue with multiple directories after adding 2nd drive to MBP

I just finished cloning and changing my MBP drive to an OWC SSD. I used SuperDuper to clone the existing drive to the new SSD "MacSSD" in an ext enclosure. I also did a Time Machine save to a different ext drive just in case. Then I removed the old HD and replaced it with the new SSD. I then used the OWC "data doubler" kit to put the original HD "Mac HD" in place of the optical drive.
All this went well and works great. Snow Lep 10.6.6 still thinks my home drive is on the orig "Mac HD" but I am booting off the new "MAC SSD" drive.
The old HD is still bootable, but I want to strip off the Apps and OS so the drive is only used for data. Snow Leper won't let me delete these directories. How can I remove these from the old HD since they have been cloned on the new HD? How to be sure SL uses the new SSD for Apps and OS?

  • Failed boot after moving hard drive (IDE not SATA)

    Greetings all.
I am attempting to setup a headless box, and in doing so I am installing Arch on one system (Sapphire Axion A3-M275 Motherboard), then moving the hard drive to the new system (SGS1660, a VIA CLE266/VT8235 based headless rack-solution). I think what is happening is that the kernel does not have the drivers for the IDE controller on the board for the CLE266/VT8235. Does this seem accurrate? And if so, how can I verify the current kernel config, then compile a kernel with everything else Arch needs to boot properly? I am familiar with the old means of setting up a kernel using the 'make menuconfig; make; make modules_install' etc method.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi, not sure if this is still causing you an issue, but I just ran into the same problem.
For me, I have a Sharp PC=MM1110 which has no cd drive and doesn't like to boot from USB. To get Arch installed on it, I had to attach it to another PC (via it's docking cradle, which lets it show up as a USB hard drive), then boot the other PC from an Arch install cd and select the USB hdd for all of the partitioning etc.
When I rebooted after the installation, the Sharp wouldn't boot.
First, I had to edit the grub menu entry to point to (hd0,0), at which point I got the error listed in the first post... Failed to parse block device id's.
If i booted into fallback mode, it booted without a problem.
For me, the solution to finally get it working was to boot into fallback mode, remount the filesystem as r/w, and run mkinitcpio -g filename to rebuild the kernel. Once completed all I had to do was point grub to the new kernel image and it booted ok.
Hope this is useful to someone

  • After adding folders to iTunes library, now have duplicates of each song

I store all my music on a separate drive, M:\
I have a specific file structure setup that has worked for me for years, M:\Artist\Album
I recently received an iPod for my birthday, and started using iTunes. After adding my music drive (M:\) for inclusion into the library (without "keep..." and "copy..." selected, as to keep my current file structure intact), when selecting "File->Display Duplicates" just about every song in the library has a duplicate, one in the original folder "M:\Artist\Album", and another in "M:\Playlists\..\Artist\Album". I understand that basically somehow iTunes glitched and started in the "M:\Playlist" directory when adding to the library at some point, however I am at a loss as to how. In my actual folders I only have 1 copy of each song, so basically iTunes is making a symbolic link to each song and adding it into the library as a separate song.
I have over 9000 (must...resist...meme...) songs in my library, and removing and restoring takes quite a while. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to do this at least once now, but any ideas as to why or advice on how to avoid this particular problem in the future?
I am pretty set in my ways of my current file structure, since I don't use iTunes as my primary media software, so I would prefer to not have to resort to succumbing to just letting iTunes handle everything the way it wants (I pretty much hate that).
Thank you for any suggestions you may have.
EDIT: Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?
    Message was edited by: kaziekama

If you have "Keep..." and "Copy..." unchecked, iTunes will simply reference the existing file, and will not change your file structure, as you correctly note.
I'm fairly sure that some other program is operating on your files. The "Playlists" folder that you mention has nothing to do with iTunes. On my PC, only Windows Media and Roxio use it.
To your question +"Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?"+ the answer is no. When iTunes rips a CD, it names the files as track number and title, with no option to do differently. And as far as placing the ripped files, they go in Artist/Album, with no option to do differently. As full-featured ripping programs go, iTunes is not even in the race.

  • How do I set up my Imac after adding a SSD along with my existing HD

How do I set up my Imac after adding a SSD so that my system and apps are on the SSD and everything else is on the HD?  I am using mountain Lion.  I want to make sure I can still do Time Machine backups.
I was planning on first formatting the SSD and then using Migration Assistant to copy the System and the Library and the Apps over.  Where it gets confusing is the User account where some of the items will be on the SSD but I want all my folders to be on the HD.  Do I just not copy over that other stuff and once I restart from the SSD it will know where all the folders are?  Is there anything I need to know about setting up a time machine backup after that?  Will the backup I had from the one drive have to be erased and start a whole new backup?
I just want to do this right so I don't have some major problems.
    Thanks for any help.
    Michael

time machine backed up your whole system data/everything in time machine hdd.
you want to use ssd over hdd so you need to put new mac os x in ssd.
then copy all the stuff that you want to put in ssd.
from my point of view put the mac os x and other application in ssd and leave other data in hdd.(music,movies,etc....)

  • WINDOWS 8.1 - System Tools no longer displaying User and Group Settings after adding a new LOCAL user.

I jumped on my parents computer, which is on a domain.  I added a new local user(with my live.com login) and gave it admin status.  That's when the trouble began.
The main user profile disappeared.  I used the command prompt fix (see other fixes) to add the missing user back into admin.  I logged back in, and it set up the account for the first time (WTF?).  I cannot access any files from the main account
(that I logged into just fine before to get this debacle started.)
When going to Local Computer Management --> System Tools, my users and groups tool is missing.
I ran lusrmgr.msc only to find out that the most current version of Windows 8.1 and this is what it said "This snapin may not be used with this edition of Windows 8.1.  To manage user accounts for this computer, use the User Accounts tool in the
Control Panel."   <---- Awesome!  (that was sarcasm.)
I have spent over two hours in the User Account tool during the course of this problem only to prove that a picture of a computer is more useful that that "tool".
To anyone reading this ticket, the best advice I can offer you (as long as its not a crucial machine) is to back up what you can gain access to, format your hard-drive and reinstall windows and start over again.  I wouldn't recommend reinstalling 8.1,
I would say go back to 7 and wait until 10 comes out.   Windows 8 is the new Vista.  Good luck!

    Hello AhavahOlam,
    I can understand your feelings.
If my understanding is right, after adding a new local user in domain-joined Windows 8.1, you can’t open the local users and groups.
Can you still add account by going to Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts\Manage Accounts?
As this computer is domain-based, it is recommended to contact the domain administrator to see if the option is blocked.

  • Can I extend time capsule by adding external drive connected TC via USB?

    Hi,
I use my TC drive for backups, i's now full. Can I extend time capsule backup drive by adding external drive connected TC via USB? If yes, how do I his? I have 1TB WD external drive connected via the TC's USB, I can see the WD drive in the finder and the TC set-up...but I don't know where to go from here...
    Thanks for your help
    Steveru

    Welcome to the discussions, Steveru!
I think what you are asking is can you simply continue Time Machine backups by adding the new USB drive, correct? The answer is not exactly. See below for details.
To use the new USB drive for Time Machine backups, you'll need to Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock and open Time Machine. Click on Select Disk and click your USB drive to highlight it, then click Use for Backup. Here's the rub....Time Machine will make a new full complete backup of everything on your Mac's hard drive. There's no way to avoid this. After that, it will continue to make scheduled incremental backups just like it did before on the Time Capsule.
If you ever need to go back to your original backups on the Time Capsule, you'll need to right-click the Time Capsule icon on the dock and choose Browse Other Time Machine Disks.
When the USB drive start to fill, you may decide that you no longer need all the old backups on the Time Capsule disk since you should have a good history of backups on the USB drive at that point.
So, you could erase the Time Capsule disk and then start backing up to the Time Capsule disk again. At that time, it will also make a complete backup on the first pass and then normal incremental backups from that point forward. When the TC begins to fill again, then you could erase the older backups on the USB drive and start backups again on that drive. Then switch to the other drive in the future to keep things going indefinitely. If you go with this type of flip flop plan, you should always have a solid history of many months of backups at any given time.
Will a plan like this work? I don't answer a question on the forum unless I've done it myself. This has been working well for me for almost 3 years.
Pondini, the resident expert on Time Machine and Time Capsule affairs, may have some comments on this as well. If you haven't already seen his excellent guide, Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule or +Time Machine FAQ+, these are the best available sources of information on this subject on the Internet.
Or, if you don't want to erase any your backups, you could of course keep adding a new USB drive when the current drive is about to fill.

  • Iphone 5s had white light leaks on lcd after unlocked with touch id

My iphone 5s had white light leaks on lcd after unlocked with touch id. It's a bit confusing because if I unlock with passcode, there's no white light leaks. Does anyone have the same issue? What should I do?

Title: Burst of White Light on iPhone 5S and iPhone 6
    Description:
On unlocking the device with Touch ID a burst of white light is produced from the Top Left/Right corners of the screen.
It happens when more than two folders are created i.e three/four folders each having some applications and the phone is locked while on the same screen.
If no folder or maximum two folders are created then no such burst is produced when unlocking with Touch ID.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Configure Touch ID
    2. Use Black/Dark wallpaper on Home & Lock Screen.
    3. Create minimum four folders either on the home screen or the second having some applications in each.
    4. Being on Home Screen lock the phone.
    5. Unlock with Touch ID and a Burst of White Light will appear on Top Left/Right Corner.
    6. Now move/drag two of the folders to the other second page.
    7. Go back to Home Screen and lock the phone.
    8. Unlock with Touch ID and there is no Burst of White Light.
                        OR
Repeat step 1 and 2 as listed above.
    1. Go to the second screen (after home screen) and create three or four folders with applications in it.
    2. Lock the iPhone while on the same screen.
    3. Unlock with Touch ID and there is a Burst of White Light.
    4. Now drag or remove the folders with only two left.
    5. Lock the iPhone while on the same screen.
    6. Unlock with Touch ID and there is no Burst of White Light.
NOTE: If iPhone is LOCKED and UNLOCKED when on the screen with no folders NO WHITE BURST is there.
    Problem Since:
Burst of White Light when apps added to a folder and unlocked with Touch ID. This is noticed since the update iOS 7.0.6 [11B651]
    Devices:
The burst of light on iPhone 5s is easily recognized but on iPhone 6 its for a fraction of a second. Not checked on iPhone 6+.

  • System Hangs after adding Storage :(

First dont jump on me for mentioning a 4800 this is storage related.
    Solaris 8
    Brocade 3850(SUN Branded)
    SUN Samfs(4.2.8, running 5 months)
EMC Clarion(Old existing and always seen in config)
    Infortend FC-SATA array(Newly added)
I have added some FC-SATA drives to my 4800s. The process of adding these drives was done by a 'cfgadm -c configure <Controller #>'. Following this the disks are seen, striped and shared with SAMFS. All is good at this point.
During reboot the systems hangs just after the boot message of "System is coming up". I think it is at the point of finding mount points and doing an 'fsck', but the system never completes(+45 minutes).
When I drop back to the original configuration prior to the 'cfgadm' the system then boots just fine, but I then need to do 'cfgadm -c .....' to see the drives and mount my SAMFS partitions.
    Any ideas?

    SimonM
The disks can be seen when I attach the storage with a 'cfgadm -c configure <controller #>' and the system up and running. After dynamicly attaching the storage I can create filesystems, use SAMFS to share the filesystem out, and all is good across all machines.
I only have an issue later in life when a reboot(hate for a panic) occurs. Some sunsolve/goggle'ing found some old document that were very dated that pointed to the path_to_inst and fiber not playing well.
I am not 100% sure that the system has hit the mount/fsck processes or not but it is the next sequence in the boot process. I know it is storage/config related because (1) adding the new disks is the only thing that changed on the system, (2) returning the OS back to its original configuration before the disks being added allows everything to boot fine. I was just looking for some pointer of where to begin troubleshooting.
I will keep everyone updated. Like I said I only get a couple of hours every month if I am lucky.

  • What is the expected behavior in a zone after adding a new static route in Solaris 10....

    Hi Folks,
I have a few Solaris 10 production machines here at work and had a strange thing happen. I added a new route to these machines using the "add route <destination > <gateway>" command and my web applications running in the zones on these machines froze up. Greg- Dreamweaver CS4/Live View integration with BrowserLab allows you to send interactive states of a local site/design directly to BrowserLab (dynamic data, rollover/mouse interaction states, widget states, et al), and from behind firewalls no less- definitely a scenario we covered.  You can get the extensions (which require Dreamweaver CS4, of course) up on the Labs site: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/browserlab/

    Imac 27".
i do not like the idea of repairing every month.
Feel the imacs supplied to India are sub standard ones

Folks have reported that the Apple policy is three major component failures and the Mac is replaced. For the first two the Mac is repaired. Apple would not risk alienating its customers from one of the most populated nations in the world, so its time to stop the "discriminating against the poor Indians and selling us sub-standard Macs" routine. Occasionally the universe aligns just right for there to be a Mac lemon. Folks in every country have experienced lemons. It is the hazard of manufacturing millions of Macs with even more millions of parts, all produced by different parts suppliers. And it is why the manufacturer's warranty exists.
Speak to the vender about a replacement. If necessary call Apple Care and request that your warranty service call be escalated to Customer Relations. Politely, but firmly, explain the situation and stand your ground that the solution to make you a happy customer is to have the Mac replaced. Don't make threats, mention lawyers or claim that Apple discriminates against Indians.
