Flaky wi-fi link

Hi all,
My Macbook is quite new (still white!) and rather brilliant.
However the wi-fi seems to randomly drop, but only at home, it seems fine in the office.
Home config is Zyxel 660HW router with WPA wireless encryption, Macbook is OS X 10.4.10
Just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar problem? Its an annoyance, the wi-fi will just stop working and I have to select it again from the list to get it working again.
Any thoughts folks?
Cheers
R

Just wanted to chime in and say I have a 2 week-old Macbook (10.4.10) and I've had no problems connecting via WEP, WPA and open networks @ home, school, park and cafes. No problems coming out of sleep or staying connected for extended periods. Hope everyone having problems will have a resolution soon. I love my mac - not perfection but pretty darn close.

  • Safari opening linked .zip files directly from DVD instead of downloading

    Dear all,
Safari opening linked .zip files directly from DVD (via Windows explorer) instead of downloading it tru browser click - it's working just fine in FF, Chrome IE. Is this a known issue? or something can be done by modifying browser setting/pref.
    Expecting more advise on this.
    Configurations: Windows XP
    Safari: 5.1.7
Note: ensured there is no space in the file path, just linked the .zip file using href attribute!
Also tried with .xls, .doc insted of .zip same issue appearing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Thirilog

    Hi
appzapper & such are pretty flaky at removing things usefully, imo.
Use the uninstaller for speed download - http://www.yazsoft.com/products/speed-download/faqs/?how-to-un-install-speed-dow nload-properly
or get a hold of FindAnyFile or easyfind & search for Growl & Speeddownload & yazsoft - but from all I hear, the uninstaller works fine.
Failing that, Safari's settings plist file isn't in caches
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist
    is the place
& if you're still stuck, test & maybe download another browser using a New User Account.

  • Is it possible to link to a specific Wordpress blog post within Muse?

    Hey Adobe Muse community,
I'm currently building a site for a client who wants to have full editing capability of his blog posts. He's comfortable with Wordpress, and we've successfully embedded his blog in the Muse-built site. However, throughout the site, there will be references to specific blog posts (that would ideally link to that individual post directly) and he will probably want to promote new posts by being able to send or share the blog post url directly. Using the WP native url isn't really an option as the WP blog has been designed to fit within the Muse site (all redundant menus, call-outs, etc, have been removed), so it doesn't work well as a stand-alone. Additionally, the client doesn't want visitors to be taken away from the site in order to view the blog.
Any help or insight would be most appreciated.
    Thanks all and happy holidays,
    Liz

you can try using an Arrange Track (though i've found it a bit flaky):

  • Contribute CS4 Crashes Using Vimeo Links

We recently started posting videos on Vimeo and tried to add links on our website (using Contribute CS4).  We can create a link to any Vimeo page but then Contribute will crash when editing any text or when looking at the properties of the hyperlink.  If I remove the Vimeo link the crashing problems immediately go away.  This happens even if the link is just to http://vimeo.com.
We will consider upgrading Contribute if this problem goes away in newer version, but we don't want to spend more on Contribute if the problem also exists in newer versions.  Anyone else having this experience?

If replacing prefs will work (no promises, but sudden flakiness like this is a good candidate), you'll find all you need at Replace Your Preferences
If it doesn't work, post a link to the crash report as John suggests and he can probably give you some insight into what the problem is.

    Hi,
It's possible that the server was temporarily down or the Internet connection was flaky for a brief period of time.
    Would you try again?
I was not able to reproduce the problem when I tried a couple of minutes ago.

  • Linking files over a network

    Hi Everyone,
I should start by saying that my background is entirely in Windows environments and I have effectively no technical knowledge of OS:X or any Adobe products.  I work for a company that recently decided to buy 2 Macs for their marketing department to use various programs.
The issue we have is that when using InDesign with files hosted on the network, if you select high display performance the program becomes nearly unusably slow.  It works without issue on normal display performance.  I looked at all of the linked files and in total it's ~11MB worth of pictures.  Some docs have upwards of 20MB.  We've taken docs that are the same size with all of the links residing on the local machine and it works normally.
The people using them seem to be familiar enough with Macs and InDesign, and they think that this is abnormal.  I called Adobe support and they said they don't support linking files from network locations.  I'm not sure if ID is supposed to handle this well on high display, or if it's just too much information going across the network, or what.
Version is CS5.  Downloaded all updates.  Connected via cable, not wireless.  The server hosting the files is our Win2008 file server located on the same floor. Let me know if you'd like any more info.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    -Max

I assumed that, but I called 3 different times (they even made me purchase a support contract, even after buying the Master Suite) and then told me they don't support it.  It was pretty fun.
    Good times.
In this case, when they say "We don't support it," they mean "we've tested it, and it works pretty well, but we can't test it in all circumstances, and some people out there are going to have weird networks, so whenever someone calls our tech support line with a problem, and they're linking over a network, we can get 'em off the phone really fast, thereby saving a bunch of money in tech-support wages on what could have been a three-hour network-diagnosis call."
So, "we don't support it" doesn't mean it doesn't work, but it does mean that their first-line support people won't talk about it.
I work in Typical display mode over our (slow, flaky) network with files stored on our (slow, flaky) NAS, all the time, without issue. When I want to work in High Quality mode, I save, package, move my links local, and re-open. My hunch is that working in high-res display causes data to be streamed straight off the hard drive. When sharing a NAS with n other people, it needn't even be a network hiccup killing my performance, it could be the drive throughput, another user or five trying to access data on the same platter, and so on.
The people using them seem to be familiar enough with Macs and InDesign,
and they think that this is abnormal.  I called Adobe support and they
said they don't support linking files from network locations.  I'm not
sure if ID is supposed to handle this well on high display, or if it's
just too much information going across the network, or what.
Live Draw (is that's what it's called? I'm still not much of a CS5 user) is a performance killer even when you have eight gigs of RAM and ultra-fast hard drives with gigantic caches. Have your users turned it off yet? That's the first thing to try. Next would be to compare performance between local vs. remote and typical vs. high quality.
    edit: for "High Quality mode"

  • D-Link Router wont support internet wirelessly

I have a d-link 615 router. I have my old macbook os x10.4.11 and I can get a full wireless signal and every thing looks fine except it is extremely slow and often times wont bring up a web page and says check the connection. My roommate has a new macbook pro. I checked all the settings and they all look identical. His connects just fine and is lightning fast. This seems to be an isolated issue with my router because anywhere else my wireless works just fine. If anyone has any suggestions or has delt with this issue please let me know. Thanks

It's always best to post a help request or question as a NEW message, rather than piggyback on another similar thread, so people who troll the threads (like me!) will see it as a new topic rather than as an additional post about a previous (and often 'Solved') thread started by someone else.
    1. Have you reset your DSL 'modem'? If you don't have instructions that came with it from your service provider, just power it off, and wait about 5 minutes before reconnecting to it.
2a. Before connecting it to your new router, connect it directly to one of your computers with an Ethernet cable to be sure your internet connection is working, before dealing with router issues. Also consider that you might have a flaky Ethernet cable, so if it doesn't work the first time, try another cable.
2b. If you cannot connect to the internet when directly connected, contact your DSL provider. (AT&T had a 22-state outage of some U-verse services yesterday because of a 'server error'.)
3a. Next, connect your new router to the DSL modem, and use Ethernet cable(s) to connect to each computer, so you verify that the router is working properly in wired mode BEFORE you do additional wireless configuration.
3b. Your 4-year-old MacBook might not support wireless Ethernet 802.11 'n' protocol, only 'a', 'b', and 'g'. Your new router might need to be set to 'mixed mode so that it accepts at least 'g' AND 'n' protocols. That could explain why your husband could connect and you could not.
3c. If the new router still has all default settings and is called 'Netgear', are you absolutely sure it is the only one in your neighborhood, and that you're actually connecting to YOUR router, rather than some other one?
    4. It's pretty hard to 'blow' a router from any settings you enter from a computer. Electrical storm or power surge perhaps, though even complex admin configurations can always be reset. But your old router was 5 years old, so you certainly got your money's worth from that investment.

  • Forums not interpreting link tags currently

I have no idea what the real reason is, but I speculate it is a quick fix to spam or offensive links. Years ago slashdot had problems with that, so they came up with the solution of plain-texting the domain name next to the link as the poster has formatted it. Given the ease of using link-shortening sites, I'm not convinced simply showing the link solves too much. I like the [oracle-base documentation|http://www.oracle-base.com/search/] links.

  • Can you link specific questions to list variables where it pops up choices depending on the question?

If i am asking a specific question for example:
Alpha Sector, then if Alpha Sector was selected then you must list what POSITION on ALPHA work is being performed.
    Alpha = Alpha Position 1
                Alpha Position 2
                Alpha Position 3
                Alpha Position 4
Alpha Position 5 , then depending on which of these are selected, it also has another question as well. What will be the FREQUENCY on that SPECIFIC POSITION.
Say that Alpha was SELECTED, then work is being performed on ALPHA Position 1, then another popup here should allow another question to be answered: What is the FREQUENCY for ALPHA Position 1 ? then once this was asked if Alpha Position 2 was also SELECTED, then go through the same above ROUTINE.
Alpha = Alpha Position 2 was also selected, then another popup here should allow another question to be answered: What is the FREQUENCY for ALPHA Position 2 ? and SO ON.
How is this accomplished? Would i have to create new pages then link to them or what?
Please help, feel free to call or email me direct.

Thanks for your suggestions, Magnus, you really have had a good think for me - I appreciate that!
What I am doing is report writing in which 90% of the report is the same for everyone. Except the cover page with Name and Address details, and Report title; the initial section which is the same for everyone except for specifics such as amount to invest, reason for investment, term to invest over, things like that.
The end of the report is the recommendations section which is where I use freetext to create a bespoke solution - this cannot be automated.
Just automating the cover page and the intro section save me huge amounts of time which I can then use on research and fund analysis, leaving the principles of investment section pretty much the same for everyone, as here I'm describing the principle and theory.
After I created this Report Template my average report creation time went down from about 3 to 4 hours, to about 45 minutes. I guess the automation itself doesn't save as much time as the templating does, but it allows me to concentrate on the important bit and not worry if I have left something out - or in - that changes the overall thrust of the report.
I cannot load Lotus WorpPro on Parallels, nor on Virtual PC, so the lack of automation really is a pain here. I see it as a weakness of Apple products for business, as I am sure Microsoft do which is why they have dropped VBA support for Office 2008.
I have got NeoOffice as well as OpenOffice for Mac on my system, but really they aren't atable enough to use, and the formatting is pretty flaky. It certainly isn't completely consistent with Office itself.
So, I am left with the conclusion that progress only means a reduction in features!
    But maybe I'm missing something?

  • Manual for 2nd generation shuffle needed - broken link

Hi does anyone have a pdf of the manual they could mail me - the link on the apple site is bust !
    Many thanks Roger

Thank you Mr Morgan1 - you learn something new every day. I thought the link was broken (let's face it the apple site is often a bit flaky) but it was, in fact, my browser cache that needed clearing, that's never happened before. Thanks also for your helpful remark suggesting that I "...pay a bit more attention..." I feel like a little schoolboy again.

  • Orphaned files - broken links - URGENT

    Hi everyone
I am currently going through and deleting 675 orphaned files
and files that are old although if they create a broken link after
deletion this will not show when I re run the link checker even
though I know they are. Does anyone know why this is? I can't keep
deleting things if it is going to create a broken link within the
site. Also, is there any way of finding out where an individual
document is located on the site if at all?
Second issue is that orphaned files that I have deleted in
both the local site and remote site are still coming up when I do
the link check. Why is this so and how can I get them removed from
    the orphaned files list?
    Please help

many of the people offering answers use the NNTP newsgroup

the webforum has been flaky lately i think.
Here's my reply from a while ago-

dw's link checker checks html links, and links in "behaviors"

  • GPS on my passport flaky

I just got off the phone with ATT Tech Support. They don't see any documented cases or anything from Blackberry regarding flakiness of the GPS radio on the Passport.  Any program that uses the GPS radio (yelp, waze, poynt, facebook , foursquare, maps, etc...) the most important one being Blackberry maps. It's unuseable. Signal comes and goes. I've tried everything including factory reset. Something is clearly broken here. I assumed GPS was satellite based not carrier tower based unless they are providing a GPS service?

    Hello,
Exactly what OS level are you running, please? NOT Software Release, btw...truly the OS version. There have been many updates over time, and if you've not updated, then that could be causal. Also, your OS may well have become corrupt beyond the point that a "factory reset" can cure, resulting in the need to cleanly reload your OS (and perhaps not even restore from backup).
    Thanks and let us know!

  • Flaky imac to timecapsule wifi but printer OK

We have a new (purchased Sept 22) iMac and time capsule. The wifi connection
between the iMac and the TC (which is our router as well connected to a cable
modem) is flaky. A Linux machine connected to the TC by ethernet always connects
to the internet just fine, and can print to a wifi printer via the TC just fine,
but often the iMac seems to "connect" to the TC, but nothing really happens --
mail times out, browsers time out or run extremely slowly. Sometimes this can be
fixed by turning airport off on the iMac and then back on. Today it was really
bad, and Airport Utility couldn't even find any wireless devices, even with

*_Time Capsule Weak Signal Strength / Dropped Connections_*
Forgive the size of the post, but the suggestions below have helped others with similar issues. Try each topic individually and see if things improve, If not move on to the next one.
    *Keep the Time Capsule Cool*
Some posters have observed that when they positioned the Time Capsule for better ventilation and cooling, their network connectivity issues resolved themselves. Also avoid locating the devise within poorly ventilated cabinets or piling items around or on top of it.
    *Time Capsule Orientation*
While the location you chose to setup your Time Capsule may be acceptable, but the direction it is oriented can have an effect on signal strength. It appears that the signal of the Time Capsule does not radiate equally from all sides of the devise.
The antennas within the devise are positioned along the 3 smooth sides. That is, there is no antenna on the side bearing the ports and cables. As a result, position the devise with the ports and cables AWAY from the direction of most of the clients that will be connecting to it.
    *Cordless Phones*
Some users have discovered that the cordless phones they have in the home occupy or are near the same bandwidth as their wireless network (2.4Ghz or 5Ghz). Try temporarily disabling the handsets and their bases and see if network connectivity improves. If so you may need to change the channel that the phone uses or purchase phones that occupy a different bandwidth.
    *Proximity To Other Devices*
One poster observed: “Finally have full access, full speed, and full functionality. Initially I installed the Time Capsule at the location of my cable, cable modem... which of course was next to my HDTV, DVD, Apple TV, Amplifier, etc. Get the picture? After about 4 weeks of starts and stops, resets and repeated initial backups, I moved the unit to another location, closer to my Mac, and in an area where there are no other electronics. Now, it runs perfect.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1734818&tstart=0]
    *Change Firewall Settings* #
Go to System Preferences --> Security.
    Click the Firewall tab.
Change setting to “Set access for specific services and applications”.
The System will now ask you when each process wants to penetrate the firewall. Once you click “Allow” each time you are asked, it will be saved in the pane at the bottom of this window and it should never ask you again.
One poster observed, “Since I made this change, my wireless has been strong and Time Machine works like a champ and the impact on my network performance is minimal. I speculate that the change in performance is due to security protocols or services that run in the 'allow all incoming connections' and 'allow only essential services' modes. Whatever the reason this fix has worked for me for over 2 months without resetting my airport connection or time capsule.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8348496#8348496]
    *Change Time Capsules’ Channel*
    Launch Airport Utility.
Select the device on the left.
    Click "Manual Setup."
    Select “Airport” in the toolbar.
    Click the "Wireless" tab.
If “Channel” is set to “Automatic” try changing to a different one. Holding the Option key down and clicking the drop-down menu should provide more channels to choose from. If you have another wireless router operating, ensure that each devices’ channels are as far apart as possible.
    Click “Update”.
    Close Airport Utility.
    *Preferred Networks & Airport Services*
You may be experiencing interference from other networks in your neighborhood. When you click the Airport menu are there other networks listed other than your own?
If so, is your network at the top of the list? It should be.
Go to System Preferences --> Network --> Select Airport on the left.
Click "Advanced". In the “Airport” tab note the various local wireless networks that Airport detects. Is the network you prefer to connect to at the top of the list? If not drag it to the top. Are there other networks you never intend to connect to (an old work network, or a neighbors network)? Then highlight them and click the "-" button.
Make sure “Remember any network this computer has joined” is checked.
    Click "OK".
For "Network Name" be sure your network is selected and then click "Apply".
Is Airport (wireless) your primary means of connecting to your network? If so, is Airport at the top of the list of services on the left? It should be.
Click the small “Gear” button at the bottom of the window and select “Set Service Order”.
Now drag Airport to the top of the list.
    Click “OK”. Click “Apply”.
Now see if network connectivity has improved.
    *Transmit Power & Wide Channels*
If you are using the 802.11n only (5GHz) radio mode, you can also select to use wide channels, which provide higher data throughput in your network.
    Launch Airport Utility
Select your Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
    Select “Airport” in the toolbar.
    Click the “Wireless” tab.
Click “Wireless Options...” at the bottom of the window.
Adjust the “Transmit Power” to 100%.
Put a check mark in the box labeled “Use Wide Channels”. (If you are using a 802.11a/b/g (2.4GHz) radio mode then select “Interference Robustness”)
    Click “Done”.
Click “Update” in the lower right hand corner.
Wait for the Time Capsule to restart and then see if your network speeds improve.
Let us know if any of the above helped improve your situation.
    Cheers!
