Flash 8 & Flash 9 & Director
I have a director shell which allows file system IO, which
loads a Flash 8 file when opened, which becomes full-screen. That
then loads other Flash files in the course of the app running.
Currently, AFAIK you can't force Flash 9 into full screen on
load (yet), so I can't use Flash 9 for the main file. My question
is, is there any payoff to using Flash 9 for the child movies which
are then loaded into the Flash 8 parent movie using loadMovie? I
have to use AS2 in any event, I'm just looking to squeeze as much
speed out of the app as possible.
Thanks in advance to anyone who knows.
Director does not play Flash 8 or 9 unless there has been a
recent update.
I publish as Flash 7 if the SWF is to be used in Director. It
works
flawlessly for me.

I'm a multimedia student and my collegues and I have been debating weather we prefer Flash or Director. My teacher who teaches Director says he dislikes Flash and my teacher who teaches flash, says he dislikes director. Having worked with both, I personally dislike director, I find it's not as user friendly as flash but I do think scripting in lingo is easier than actionscript, anyhow for now that is. I'm still learning... Really, what is the difference between the two and what do you use them most for? Why would you work with one more than the other? Usually the demand is for flash, employers will ask you to have flash experience and java script. So why use Director?
Thanks for your feedbackKey difference: Sooner or later Adobe will decide they hate Director and end it* (Director seems to take less system resources, something Adobe doesn't seem to care; it also does 3D, but that is something Flash Player 11 Incubator is now capable of). They don't seem to want to see Flash end, on the other hand. Director is also far more expensive.
So the answer is simple here. Go for Flash.
*Personal opinion only, I don't know what's the actual decision Adobe will make -
Flash into Director tutorials?
Hi.
Can anybody recomend some beginners tutorials for bringing
Flash into Director?
ThanksSure, do you have more than one button in the Flash .swf? Do
you want to
send something unique from the Flash button, or do you just
want the
button to act as a trigger for the frame change?
You can use getURL("lingo:functionName(args)"); to call a
Lingo function
in a movie script.
You can use getURL("event:functionName,arg1"); to call a
lingo function
in a behavior attached to the Flash sprite.
You can use getURL("string to send"); to send data to a
function called
on getURL me, data in a behavior attached to the Flash
sprite.
The syntax for each is unique. The first two examples expect
any
argument to the Lingo function to be a number. You can use a
string if
you escape the quotation marks. The third example just sends
a string.
You can also send the contents of an array.

Exporting Flash to Director WITH video
In Flash, I have created a digital camera, that, when a
button is pressed, the screen changes from showing pictures to
showing a video. This works all fine and well in Flash, however, it
has to work in Director. Now I imported it into Director, obviously
using version:Flash 6, but because of it being version 6, the video
didnt work, so i tried version 7, where the sound of the video
works, but no picture. version 8 isn't supported by the director im
using (MX 2004).
Does anyone know of a way that I can get around this?
Its so frustrating as it works fine in Flash! On the Mac - exporting to "Quicktime Video" produces a true
video file (fixed frame rate). It is not
an SWF on a track in the quicktime player - Windows users
only yhave the option to export a flash
track to QT.
On the Mac, exporting to just quicktime produces a flash
movie in QT.
The easiest way to tell is to look at the file size of the
SWF and then exported MOV - the MOV will
be MUCH larger - probably hundreds of MBs while the SWF may
only be 100k (give or take).

Flash or Director for a Platform Game
Hi all,
First of all, I want to say that this post is not meant to
start another fight about these 2 great app, I just want your
advice about which one can give me better performance on the web. I
feel comfortable using Lingo and Actioscript 3, however I am not a
programmer but I can do things move. I am posting here because, I
know many Director users are now using Flash.
These are some considerations:
1. If I go for Actionscript 3 the game will be Tile-Based
2.Using Tile-Based with AS3, I think, copyPixel will be a
good option
3. If I go for Director both techniques, Art-Based and Tile
Based are valid options
4. I have not decide which collision method to use in both
cases
5. I will need connection to MySql, with Flash I know how to
do it, with Director I do not
My concern is performance, not programming. I will appreciate
your feedback
RegardsIt's okay but it limits your chances of getting help.

Hi all,
I created a page of info on the process of creating Flash
Video and
integrating them with Director. The tutorial is at:
http://www.deansdirectortutorials.com/FlashVideo/
The top part may seem basic for some. It's there to support
my students
who are using clips from YouTube in their work.
If you scroll right to the bottom, I have a FLA and DIR
template for
linking FLVs in Director. With the SWF created from the FLA
movie, and
with behaviors in the Director movie, you can dynamically
link to FLVs
and have controls to pause, play, rewind, and wait for the
end of the
FLV.
Hope it's useful to all. Let me know if anything is unclear.
And thanks to Chuck Neal who helped with the FLV behaviors.

email: [email protected]What I need is to be able to take flash 9, AS3 swfs, import
them into a Director 11 project, and interact with the flash
funcitons, call them, set properties, etc. Despite the
documentation on the Adobe Director page saying this is possible, I
have not been able to get it to work, and other posters on this
board have stated that it is currently not possible. Any clarity or
examples would help. I notice Director 11 has no entries concerning
Director/flash programming yet on the Adobe Developer page, just
tutorials for MX2004. -
I have about 12 swfs that I need to put into a Director shell
and when I do the buttons on the swfs that link to other swfs work
fine but the buttons in the swfs that link to the web don't work at
all (neither do the quit buttons on the swfs). I know it's probably
(hopefully anyway) something simple but my lil brain is fried from
trying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance. When you use getURL in Flash it's anticipated that there is a
browser
present hosting the swf so that it can react properly. In
your case
there isn't, so you need to have Director catch those
commands.
Drop a behavior on your Flash sprite and see what Flash is
saying to
you, and then decide how to react:
on getURL me, tData
put tData

Integrating DropDown menu of flash with director
Hi everyone,
I have a movie wherein i am using small flash movies as
component for better UI effect. Also we are using other component
like drop down, text boxes and radio buttons developed in flash.
But the controls that we have in flash are causing problems
like I have a drop down menu developed in flash. I want to
use it director to give me drop down effect and also features to
add item to it. It was working fine with bitmaps earlier but
considering the scaling issue we moved to Flash. I could easily
attach beheviour to bitmaps. But the same is not working with Flash
(.swf) file.
This is what I am doing....
Dragging the dropdrop.swf file in director's cast and then
attaching Beheviour to it for drop down
I Think it is does not support Flash files so If there is any
work around this then please let me know. Also suggest if i am
heading in the right direction.
Any sort of help will be appretiated.
Thanks

Help menubar flash to director
when import a menu developed with the component menubar flash
and give transparency to the menubar, which happens to it is
necessary to give it a click off, I need you to help me that it is
disabled once the mouse is not on it.What I have is a button in director that when clicked goes to
a frame further on that contains an imported flash preloader. This
preloader will initialise everything then will bring up the swf
file which is external. I agree it should just load over the top
but it doesn't. I'm trying to get the swf to close and director to
return to the start but can't find anything

Flash call director using getURL bug
Hi!
I am using Flash 8 and Director MX 2004, and I found out
that, if I use getURL("lingo: function name...") to call director
function, and if there is any error happened in this function call,
it seems that director won't show any error message at all. Does
anybody know how to make director display the error message? Here
is an example to show the bug:
http://www.storynest.com/TRANSFER/flashGetURLBug.zip
if you click on the director button, it will show an error,
but if you click on the flash button, which calls the same
function, director produces no error...
Thanks a lot for help!

Hi :
I am having a Text editor swf file.I am omporting thst fiel
into director and when i enter the data into text editor and make
customiztion like bold, underline i am able to apply it to the
content and also i am able to get the htnl format of that content
when i click a button of the swf file.
But what my problem is all this things are handled using the
Flash scripting and it is done in the swf file.but i just wanted
the content typed in the texteditor ito director. but i need the
way in which director can get the value typed in te texteditor.
how do i achive this.
Thanks and regards,
ajitHi,
In addition to what Mike said, you'd probably wat to create a
'wait until swf is
done' behavior. Something like:
on exitFrame
if sprite(3).frame < sprite(3).member.frameCount then go
to the frame
end
where channel 3 is the swf sprite.
The above will keep looking in the frame until teh swf is
done, then will go to
the next frame.

ANSWER :
you should make an action script to the animation & etc.
you made in your FLASH by a name as like as this : (I made a pause
Button & named it gPause);
on (release) {
getURL("event:gPause");
and then in youe director file make a MovieScript including
the following code :
on startMovie
member("name of member you imported from Flash as swf. file
").model("Bip01").bonesplayer.pause()
end
on gPause
member("name of member you imported from Flash as swf. file
").model("Bip01").bonesplayer.pause()
end -
Integrating Flash Into Director
OK, here is the rundown:
I have three Flash 8 movies that I want to encapsulate in
Director 10.1.1
The movie1 is 725 frames long and is a standard movie.
After that, I want movie2 to load. Movie2 is an application
with it's own controls. I want Director to stop and let the
application run until the user selects the Exit button which loads
Movie3.
Movie3 is an exit screen with scrolling credits and
information. I want movie3 to continue playing until the user
clicks the Exit button there.
I have figured out how to get movie1 to play all the way
through and autoload into movie2 with a behavior script applied to
the first movie. I removed the stop() action at the end of movie1
and applied the following code:
on exitframe me
if sprite(me.spritenum).playing then
go to the frame
end if
end
This works fantastic, however movie2 and movie3 will not
hold. They play right through without stopping. I tried applying a
stop() action in the first frame of movie2 with no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
**Edit**
Also, when I am importing the flash movies, should I use a
standard import or should I be selecting link to external
files?OK, more digging and trying and I think that I've got it.
I just applied another behavior script to the second and
third movies:
on exitFrame
go to the frame
end
The playhead stops and allows the user to watch movie1 which
then jumps to movie2 and then movie3.
For some strange reason, though my link buttons from one
movie to the other (a skip button in movie1, and the exit button in
movie2 which links to movie3) stopped working. However, the exit
button in movie3 is working just fine...
