Flash 9 and 10 .as editor slow in Vista/7

I've posted an observation about this here that contains some tests about the CPU usage of the ActionScript editor in Flash 10.0.2. The problem is that the editor is slower than any editor I have used, including NetBeans which has the most active code coloring and code hints I have seen. And also, it's five times slower in Vista/7 compared to XP even when Aero is turned off. And I also have turned off all code hints and code coloring. Writing a quote letter (" or ') is especially slow and require a whopping 2Ghz (i.e. takes one second on my PC) in Vista, in a large .as file (500 rows or more), according to my estimates.
No other editor I have used (for example Visual Studio, DreamWeaver 8, TextPad or NetBeans) has ever come close to those numbers. Also, if all code hints and code colorings are turned off it should be as fast as Notepad, even for the quote letters which cause no coloring or other change in the document then. So it should take perhaps 2Mhz to write a quote letter, not 2Ghz.
I'm a long time C++, Java, ActionScript, Javascript etc developer and would love to know what your code is doing. Can an Adobe developer explain what the Flash text editor is doing and why it's five times more CPU intensive in Vista/7 compared to XP? (See the link in the first sentence of this message for more information.)

There is nothing wrong with your Dell, it will work fine with any MacbookPro. I have been using Dell displays for over 12 years with many different Mac models. I have two 21" Ultra Sharp displays working side by side to design a Keynote presentation right now.
    The issue your having is with the way Keynote  takes control of the video output to both displays, it sends the presentation signal to one and the presenter display to the other, this is set up in;
    Keynote preferences > Presenter display.
If you want to show a wesite or another app on  either display,  use application switcher:
press the the  command key on the keyboard, then the tab key; a row of applications will show what applications are running, choose which one you want to show. Use command  > tab to return to Keynote.

  • Help!! Flash CS3 and CS4 "Test Movie" very slow on OS X

This is a problem that, having read many forums, affects a
very large amount of people, though Adobe doesn't care at all. It
only affects OS X users. I know that it has been addressed many
times in different forums, but I never actually stumbled across
    anyone having found a solution.
When I use Flash CS3, and I make any animation, even the
simplest tween, and I preview it with Test Movie, the result I get
is an extremely slow playback. Something like half the FPS it
    should be.
However, when I export the SWF and preview it in the external
Flash Player or in a browser, it's just fine and fast.
Another interesting thing is that in CS3, when I open the
Help panel, the problem with Test Movie only happens like 20% of
the time. In that case, it only gets solved if I restart or Log Out
at least. I have no idea why the Help panel being open solves the
problem, this only shows that this is probably a little graphic
user interface bug, or something similar, that could be solved very
    very easily.
In Flash CS4, there is no Help panel, so there is no solution
    to the problem.
It would be nice to be able to press Cmd + Enter to see the
movie, and not have to do File > Export > bla bla bla, open
Finder, Find the SWF, double click it, wait for the browser to
    open... etc...
I have a brand new 2.5 GHz MacBook Pro, and Test Movie runs
faster on my 900MHz Pentium III PC!! Funny...
Here are some links I found about this problem:
    http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-878
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb407896
    http://www.kirupa.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-258991.html
This is quite ridiculous, and on Adobe's Support page, the
solution is "Do not use Test Movie."
And the funny thing is that they didn't even bother to fix
    this in CS4...
So basically if something doesn't work, Adobe's solution is
    "Don't use it."
    I guess they're right!
Please, tell me if anyone has or does not have this problem
    or knows anything about it!

  • In disk utility, below Macintosh HD I have 4 trojan "decryptedFile.dmg (flash player)" and my computer is super slow, does erasing Macintosh HD will also erase these files?  If not how can I erase? (bear in mind computer so slow a click takes forever)

in disk utility, below Macintosh HD I have 4 trojan "decryptedFile.dmg (flash player)" and my computer is super slow, does erasing Macintosh HD will also erase these files?  If not how can I erase? (bear in mind computer so slow a click takes forever)

Thank you Thomas in fact I have seen your guide before  and had gone thru the steps including repair disk which didn´t work. I am erasing disk before checking hardware. I have posted a photo of the 4 decrypted files in the disk utility and also of the adobe icons in the dock and question marks. Some people say if the adobe appears in the dock is because it is the trojan flash player and they keep jumping in the dock.  If this is not malware it seems to be an incredible coincidence that when I start seeing these things in my dock and the decrypted files in my disk utility is when my computer goes so slow (I am typing this in my macbook air because to write this message in my imac would be about 6 hours, I am not kidding, it is completely useless at this point it took me 2 and half days too instal mac os x after disk repair, it took me 3 days to transfer just 100 gigabites and now is taking the whole day (and it says another day more) just to erase the disk. Despite all this the icon of adobe keeps jumping in the dock so, although I am no computer and mac expert, just an user, I am inclined to think that it is malware and it is a shame that mac doesnt´recognize it or have anything here to help me get rid of this.  I am not even sure if erasing the disk will work since repairing didn´t work... all advice is welcomed.

    1) Every post I see that you have made recently reflects on problems that are most likely associated with your computer that are causing problems with your software. 1st thing I would look at with your problems (and I do not mean just this one) is a conflict with another program, ei antivirus software, etc. Trying turning off programs one by one, relaunching your CS programs, and see if you can find a culprit.
    2) With that kind of attitude you are only going to receive just as friendly/helpful solutions. Just because SOMEONE ELSE doesn't solve YOUR problem does not mean that THEY are ignorant.

  • Both IE and FF flash videos and games slow down/lag???

Starting a half a year to a year ago, flash videos/video players and flash games on firefox and IE would run
fine for a little while and then lag/slow down ridiculously. For the videos it would lag and skip for the rest of the video, but for the flash games it goes through a cycle of running fine and then running slow/very slow for a period of time. How can I fix this? It is so annoying and can make playing flash games and watching videos with flash almost impossible some times.
I unchecked the the box for hardware acceleration already.

Do you have any suggestions in terms of the slowing down/lagging issue? Also, is there an issue with flash player itself that is causing everyone to have all these problems with it ruining videos and stuff? Is adobe working on it/is there any hope that future version of flash player will get rid of the lag or has adobe gone down a path that is just going to cause problems for some people, permenantly, no matter what?

  • Flash 10 and PPC - slow video playback

Have an old PowerBook 12" running 10.5. Since upgrading to
Flash v10 the video playback is slow and sluggish to the point
Flash content is unusable. Tried to download a PPC specific version
but Adobe downloads gave me the Universal Binary once again. I
suspect v10 is buggy and is not supporting "Enable Hardware
Acceleration" on PPC so video is being scaled and processed by
    software.
Anyone else having this problem? Anyone able to direct me to
    good old v9?

Restarting might help temporarily, but for a more permanent solution you'd need a faster computer processor, a better video card, lots more RAM, and a faster hard drive. The sad truth of the matter is that technology advances so quickly that older computer hardware can't keep up with it. It would actually cost less to buy a new computer than it would to try to upgrade an older model. The iMac CRT's are still useful for many tasks, but they can't be expected to handle present-day multimedia.

  • What is wrong with safari 5.0.6 and 10.5.8 - SLOW!!!

    Hi guys
First post and that is because I have not had a problem with my Macbook Pro in 2 years since getting it.
I have been reading here and there but my safari 5.0.6 is getting sluggish. It take longer for webpages to load up and any kind of video content such as YouTube etc is jerking. It doesn't load as quick and stops and starts every 8 secs or so.
Facebook takes longer to load and even basic sites like BBC.
I have tried the whole reset safari and cleared the cache plus changing DNS etc.
Also created a new id and still just as slow.
I am coming to the conclusion that there is something wrong at the Apple HQ and they need to release some patches to get things working again!
    Any comments or ideas welcome.
    Cheers!

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

could the launch agents failing slow the computer or they just don't work. I mean I am willing to upgrade ram but not if there is good chance it won't change speed much. Also to downgrade is it necessary to format the hard drive?

  • Pages not loading / loading slowly / flashing on and off

    MacBook Pro
    OS X 10.5.8
    Safari 5.0.6
I have had trouble with loading pages on Safari lately on my MacBook Pro. Some take forever to load, and when they do, they load either incomplete, or not at all, leaving a white screen (even when some images appeared, they disappear). I started noticing the problem the worst when I installed an app for an online focus group that I took part in. The app's purpose, I think, was to monitor my browsing, so they could collect data to see where I was shopping for phones, going on social networks, etc. When the app was connected, safari simply did not want to load; when it was off, it worked better. I have de-installed it (I think) using their de-install function. However, the problem has continued even without the app running.
Another problem that has recently appeared is that some pages (specifically, my gmail) have started to flash on and off at times. At first it happened during the use of the app, but it still occurs even after de-installing the app.
The only other thing I think might have affected my macbook is that we recently installed a time capsule as our router (I think my husband needed to upgrade our OS on one of the laptops in order to make it work? Not sure, he may just have wanted to upgrade it in order to connect our new iPads.)
I will say, that my Safari / internet experience has been rather slower than it was when I first got the computer, and has gotten a bit annoying over the last few months - not terrible, but I know it's just not working like it should.
    1) What can I do to alleviate the loading / flashing issue?
    2) Are there any steps I can take to "cleanse" my computer of unneccessary items that may be bogging it down?
Bonus: What do I need to do before loading a new OS on my current Pro?
Many thanks for any advice you can contribute!

    Hi ...
    1. Try a Safe Mode boot.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
Mac OS X: What is Safe Mode?
    2. Reformat (erase) the hard drive. Insert the install disc while holidng down the C key.
Unfortunately, a reformat will erase everything off the drive back to factory settings but may be the only way to erdicate any left over files associated wih that app.
Before you do that, you could try searching for anything related to the app using Spotlight >  Mac Basics: Spotlight
Any software that monitors online activity is bound to have an affect on a browser.

  • PDFs in Mail and Preview are very slow

I have been experiencing serious issues with PDFs, handling them in Mail, and in Preview. This problem surfaced a few weeks ago, and it is totally hogging my resources. It is like the PDF takes over my computer. It might take several minutes to load, and it never fully loads. It will keep flashing back and forth as it tries to draw the whole document.
It seems especially problematic within graphic files, or those with shading or cross-hatching. As an Architect, I am handing files like that all the time. I bought my MBP Retina display a few weeks ago with the hopes that the 16 MB of RAM would make things run smoothly, but the only advantage is that restarts are pretty quick.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Flash CC and google display network clickTAG

I have been trying to add a clickTAG to my advert files in Flash CC. Seems to work fine but google is rejecting the adverts as an 'unsupported format'. It appears that Google will only accept SWF files up to 10.1 and the lowest you can export in CC is 10.3. I have downloaded 10.1 encoder and added it to the program XML files but still not accepting. My last hope was to open in CS5 or CS6 and that should work but I can't seem to be able to backsave or I don't know how. Any advice on this? The clickTAG I am using is below:
    btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, onClick);
    function onClick(e:MouseEvent):void {
              var click_url:String = root.loaderInfo.parameters.clickTAG;
              navigateToURL(new URLRequest(click_url), '_blank');

I got it sorted... finally. I had found a link that explained hpw to add 10.1 but the info was not 100% correct, another guy had it right for 10.2 so I just went through the 10.2 code with a fine tooth comb and changed it over and it is working now.
For anybody who is looking, and I am not a coding person, far from it, this is what I done.
    (1) Downloaded the 10.1 playerglobal.swc from Adobe here.
    (2) Right mouse click (or ctl click on a mac) on the Flash folder and show package contents - then click Contents/Common/Configuration/ActionScript 3.0/
    (3) Create a folder called FP10.1 and drop in the downloaded file (should be called playerglobal.swc).
    (3) Go back to the common folder and go to Common/Configuration/Players
    (4) Duplicate the FlashPlayer10_3.xml as FlashPlayer10_1.xml and open this file in textedit or whatever editor you have and replace the text with this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <players>
      <player id="FlashPlayer10" version="10" asversion="3">
       <name>Flash Player 10.1</name>

    (5) close and restart flash
    (6) Pick 10.1 in your export settings and it will work now.
Seriously, thanks to all who tried to help, Adobe should really fix this issue as its a pain for people who are not developers and code is alien to them.

  • Adding Android Licensing with Flash Professional and AIR 3.0

I have done the overlay AIR 3 stuff, but I still can't find an answer on how to get Android Licensing Service implemented after days and days of searching. It is pretty poitless to package a paid Android app without the licensing check as it would just easily hand the app to unauthorized users to install it without a fight.
Do not post this absurd unhelpful link: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/articles/android-licensing-native-extensions.html
It is only instructions for the bizzare FlashBuilder tool, and is quite long winded and excessive as well
Android Licesnsing Service is listed as a feature of AIR 3. How do I enable or install it onto my app in Flash Professional.

    Hi, thanks for responding, Joe.
Yes, I do plan on customizing the implementation the best I can.
I am fine with using command line to build my project if needed, I just need it to work and need to know how to do it. I am very eager to get this finished up and published. It is very frustrating to have an app all ready for android after months upon months of working on it nonstop, but then get stuck on this.
I have been trying to get this all figured out the past several days. It is very confusing and there is barely any info out there on it.
I am using Eclipse to try and build this Java extension, as I have Flash Pro and not builder.
I have gotten the Jar created from the "Creating the Java project" step.
Now on the "Developing the ActionScript library."
It says to make a project and copy files form frameworks\projects\air\Licensing\Android\AndroidLicensingJavaProject\src\ which are java files, and do some stuff, then create a SWC from them.
I sort of suspect it was a typo in the article and is supposed to be frameworks\projects\air\Licensing\Android\AndroidLicensingLib\src\
seeing as it shows .as files in the project not .java.
Also it refers to what I think it means to be ExtensionContext as "ExternalContext," which does not appear to exist in flash.external on step 4 of 'Developing the ActionScript Library.'
So the article has some flaws, and should probably be rewritten and include instructions for the proper flash editor, Flash Professional.
Anyhow, I came up with a hack to build I SWC from Flash Pro which I hope will work.
I am trying to hack together a solution to get this all to work. It is very unpleasant having to guess and figure allot of things out myself. Is there going to be a proper solution in the future? If so, roughly how long will it be? I really need to get my projects published now or very soon, not a year or 6 months from now.
I tried to complie my project to build the SWF I need for packaging with the native extension and I get this error:
"Unexpected or unknown element or attribute in the application descriptor file.
    /path-to-my-app/myappname-app.xml(49): error 103: application.android.extensions is an unexpected element/attribute"
I am also getting "Missing implementation for platform: Android-ARM" when I try to build the Native Extension. The person who has commented on the article ( http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/articles/android-licensing-native-extensions.html , comments at the bottom of the page) has this very same problem.

  • Flash player and x-plane problems...

When I play a game that is flash, it will work good for maybe 3-5 minutes, then it will skip really bad and completely slow my computer down and make stuff unresponsive. After I quit everything, my computer acts like nothing ever went wrong. One time i was playing a flash game and it started going really slow and then my screen went a little dark and it told me to restart my computer. mac os x had quit unexpectedly.. i have no idea what is going on.
x-plane has the same problem. it will run normal for one minute, then be really unresponsive for a minute.

BTW...when it comes to x-plane, I just want it to run, not run well...I know it's not a great vid card.
