Flash Archive restored files
Hi,
We are moving servers (T2000' / Solaris10) to a new Datacentre and using swing kit to reduce the downtime on the production databases.
We plan to take a Flash Archive of the OS and restore the swing kit (exactly the same config) from the Flash Archive, we also plan to take ufsdumps.
Would anyone know the exact files which are not restored as part of the Flash Archive please?? I know Flash Archive runs a sys-unconfig so hosts, defaultrouter, defaultdomain and the Network will not be restored but are there any other files which will not be restored???
Thanks in advance.
LDAP may or may not work. I have three T2000s that I need to update and I've flar'ed them and restored them to a matching T2000 just so there won't be any surprises when I do the real boxes. Sometimes LDAP works, sometimes it doesn't.

Are nfs mounts allowed in vfstab after a flash archive restore?
I am restoring a server using a flash archive. The vfstab on the original server contains an entry for an nfs mount. It looks like during the push of the archive to the new server, the vfstab gets saved to vfstab.orig and the nfs mount is removed from vfstab. So I added a finish script to add the nfs mount back to vfstab and now the server gets hung during S73nfs.client during reboot.
Are nfs mounts not allowed in vfstab after a flash archive restore? One option is to secure the OBP with a password.
At the OK prompt, set the security-mode to "command" and then set a password. Careful not to loose this password. With this set the only option is to "boot" without supplying the firmware password.
Commands:
# halt
ok setenv security-mode = command
ok setent security-password <enterpasswd>

Security for flash archive restore with NFS
When Flash archive is restored by using NFS, user id and password is not required though they are asked in case of FTP used.
If NFS client host name is registered in NFS server, anyone can restore the backup file if only they know that host name with NFS server name and exported directory.
I found the kerberos selection during resotre process set up on Interactive install, which is on the following screen.

How to restore cold backup + archived log files
Hi,
Suppose I take a cold backup on 18th. After that I have four days of archived log files. if the database crashes on 5th day, I have to restore the 18th cold back + 4 days of archived log files. How do I restore since it is a cold backup and I cant do incomplete recovery.
can I use
Recover database ( with 18th cold backup) in mount state and apply archived logs.
PrabhathThe details of how you perform forward recovery using a cold backup depends on
1- rman or manual backup
2- using current or backup control file
3- if rman, recovery catalog or no recovery catalog
4- if full database recovered or only a few files
Each of these conditions will affect what is known to Oracle and what needs to be done. For example if you restored the entire cold backup including the control file then Oracle would see a consistent database and not need to perform recovery so you would need to startup mount and tell the database to perform recovery using a backup control file. If using rman and no recovery catalog you might need to catalog some of the archived redo logs, etc....
It is advisable to consult the Backup and Recovery manuals before attempting recovery for any new scenario.

SubbuHello Subbu,
> I have taken backup yesterday monrning in Archive log mode but have lost all the archive log files.
You mean you have taken an online backup and lost all your archive log files after that online backup?
SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
Error: ORA-01113: file 1 needs media recovery
ORA-01110: data file 1: 'E:\oracle\'<SID>\sapdata1\SYSTEM_1\SYSTEM.DATA1'
SQL> recover database using backup controlfile until cancel;

ORA-00289 : Suggestion E:\ORACLE\<SID>\ORAARCH\<SID>ARCHARC03020_0683715008.001
ORA-00280: change 266277189 for thread 1 is in sequence #3020
To perform a recovery with an online backup you will need all archive log files until the end of the online backup. If you have lost them you are not able to recover (or open) your database in a consistent state.
So the only suggestion we can do is:
You need the archive log files that were created during the online backup to perform an incomplete recovery ... if they are gone you can not restore your database.

Restoring complete flash archive
Recently I made a flash archive of my system solaris 8 to tape using the command:
FLARCREATE -N SUN-EC1.FLAR -C -S -R / -T /DEV/RMT/0
I have 2 disks of 32 GB and I will replace them for 2 of 72 GB.
Which command should I use to restore my system completely after the change of the disks?
The image was taken from a live system ; Can I have some problem when restoring the copy?To restore the backup made with flarcreate you need to boot your upgraded server with the Installation disk CD1
I used the form on the <OK> prompt:
boot cdrom - w
Then the installation should start whare you have to define slices and network parameters and then you should be offered to install OS from standard location (cd) or flash archive. There you need to select flash_archive (I think it is Cntr-4 of F4) which should guide you to select source (local tape) and you just have to confirm and sit down and watch.
Good luck!

4) Use today ful backup to restore
5) Am I need to copy all archive log files in /u02/oracle/uat/uatdb/9.2.0/dbs to /u03/db/backup because "/u03/db/backup/RMAN" is restore directory?
FANHere is backup scripts:

Creating Standby server ---- Flash archive/Alternate Boot Environment.
Dear All,
I want to patch upgrade the Centralized login server which holds more than 200 users. To avoid this production outage during the downtime of upgradation, we are planning to create all the logins and application in the alternate server manually. But i feel (lazy) hesitate to create logins and copy the applications in the statndby server. Since "chpasswd" is not in solaris, i can't copy the /etc/passwd & shadow file to standby server.
So i have the plan to achieve this by
i) creating flash archive of existing login server
ii) Creating Alternate boot environment in the standby server and flash restore the archive in it.
Whether the above mentioned plan is achievable, how to create the entire flash archive of solaris os?? and how to deploy it in the alternate boot environment.?
Regards,
SivaDone, I've given the same path in Standby Database [datafiles, controlfiles] as it has been given in the Primary Database.
MoreOver, I m manually switching logfiles at primary database [alter system switch logfile] they are copied and applied sucessfully at standby database. But the archived files that I have copied with cold backup are not applied yet. Infact they are not retrieved executing the below query.
select name, applied from v$archived_log;
How can I apply those archived logs? [archives that copied with cold backup]

I have an external disk that was used on Tiger iMac. I used Backup to save files. Now that I have this external drive connected to a new IMac running SnowLeopard, how do I restore files?
Backup 3.2 is still usable if you have a MM account and can download the upgrade. Otherwise you'll need to restore them via Tiger.
If the backup is not archived, then the individual files may be accessible directly. -
Restoring files from time machine backup made using Mountain Lion
Hi Guys
I have trawled through the Internet and found many sources of help for some of my headaches but still can't help the problem. So here I am.....
I have an early MacBook Pro 13" that came with snow leopard. I immediately updated to lion which was a disaster being so slow etc. Then I upgraded to mountain lion which was pretty good. I always upgraded and never clean installed.
I have been running time machine on a Qnap nas (model 212) which I must add has been a headache to get going in itself.
Anyways I recently upgraded to mavericks which made my MacBook grind to a halt. I mean even the beachball was struggling. To the point after 2 weeks I couldn't get anything done on it!
So I decided to do a clean install. Did that and then tried to do restore files using migration assistant at first log in. Turns out my back is corrupted!
Now I know I have a good complete backup of my mountain lion system just 2 weeks old on my nas. Only problem is that mavericks won't let me get to that when I try to upgrade from that drive as it just says no OSX backup available.
Now I am trying to install snow leopard cleanly and the try and upgrade to mountain lion hoping that it would recognise the mountain lion backup on my nas.
Can you please let me know if I am going in the right direction?
Any help appreciated guys.
ThanksEverything since the fresh install, has to be done manually from my Backup drive. Wasn't, or isn't TM supposed to do that automatically (for example restoring iTunes, is it supposed to restore just the application or all the folders with it as well?). Why, when I select a folder with many subfolders in it (and eventually the files I want within) does it say that the original whatever doesn't exist anymore at that location, then I have the option to choose a new location or to recreate the enclosing folders? I Click on recreate but when I do, just the top level shows (the first folder, for example, garageband). No more folders are shown inside, despite there being plenty of files in my backup version. Am I misunderstanding TM's powers/capabilities here? Is it supposed to be this frustrating and difficult?
Everything that I want has to be done manually it seems. I don't understand it. The other thing is that it denies me access (I don't have the privileges or whatever it says) to move the files directly via the mounted disk on the desktop rather than entering TM. So, I can't go into TM and click restore, I can't manually open the mounted drive and drag files (denies me permission). The only way I've been able to do anything successfully is to archive the **** folder/s or files.
Any help or direction, or a manual on how to use or tutorial on Time machine would be great. Someone point me in the right direction please, this is highly annoying and I am debating switching back to Leopard (having issues with iChat in Snow Leopard).
Thanks -
Problem about space management of archived log files
Dear friends,
I have a problem about space management of archived log files.
my database is Oracle 10g release 1 running in archivelog mode. I use OEM(web based) to config all the backup and recovery settings.
I config "Flash Recovery Area" to do backup and recovery automatically. my daily backup schedule is every night at 2:00am. and my backup setting is "disk settings"--"compressed backup set". the following is the RMAN script:
Daily Script:
run {
allocate channel oem_disk_backup device type disk;
recover copy of database with tag 'ORA$OEM_LEVEL_0';
backup incremental level 1 cumulative copies=1 for recover of copy with tag 'ORA$OEM_LEVEL_0' database;
the retention policy is the second choice, that is "Retain backups that are necessary for a recovery to any time within the specified number of days (point-in-time recovery)". the recovery window is 1 day.
I assign enough space for flash recovery area. my database size is about 2G. I assign 20G as flash recovery area.
now here is the problem, through oracle online manual, it said oracle can manage the flash recovery area automatically, that is, when the space is full, it can delete the obsolete archived log files. but in fact, it never works! whenever the space is full, the database will hang up! besides, the status of archived log files is very strange, for example, it can change "obsolete" stauts from "yes" to "no", and then from "no" to "yes". I really have no idea about this! even though I know oracle usually keep archived files for some longer days than retention policy, but I really don't know why the obsolete status can change automatically. although I can write a schedule job to delete obsolete archived files every day, but I just want to know the reason. my goal is to backup all the files on disk and let oracle automatically manage them.
also, there is another problem about archive mode. I have two oracle 10g databases(release one), the size of db1 is more than 20G, the size of db2 is about 2G. both of them have the same backup and recovery policy, except I assign more flash recovery area for db1. both of them are on archive mode. both of nearly nobody access except for the schedule backup job and sometime I will admin through oem. the strange thing is that the number of archived log files of smaller database, db2, are much bigger than ones of bigger database. also the same situation for the size of the flashback logs for point-in-time recovery. (I enable flashback logging for fast database point-in-time recovery, the flashback retention time is 24 hours.) I found the memory utility of smaller database is higher than bigger database. nearly all the time the smaller database's memory utility keeps more than 99%. while the bigger one's memory utility keeps about 97%. (I enable "Automatic Shared Memory Management" on both databases.) but both database's cup and queue are very low. I'm nearly sure no one hack the databases. so I really have no idea why the same backup and recovery policy will result so different result, especially the smaller one produces more redo logs than bigger one. does there anyone happen to know the reason or how should I do to check the reason?
by the way, I found web based OEM can't reflect the correct database status when the database shutdown abnormally. for example, if the database hang up because of out of flash recovery area, after I assign more flash recovery area space and then restart the database, the OEM usually can't reflect the correct database status. I must restart OEM manually to correctly reflect the current database status. does there anyone know in what situation I should restart OEM to reflect the correct database status?
sorry for the long message, I just want to describe in details to easy diagnosis.
any hint will be greatly appreciated!
Sammythank you very much, in fact, my site's oracle never works about managing archive files automatically although I have tried all my best. at last, I made a job running daily to check the archive files and delete them.
thanks again. -
How to delete archive log files from ASM through Grid Control
Hi
Anybody suggest me how to delete archive log files from ASM through Grid Control.
ThanksIt is important to specify both, the oracle version and os version when posting, so confusions can be avoided.
In this particular case, since you are referring to asm and grid control you could be talking about either 10gR1, 10gR2 or 11gR1; but I strongly suggest you to avoid us to be guessing. In either case, you sould go to the maintenance tab of the target database and program a scheduled 'delete noprompt obsolete;' procedure. This will purge the information stored at the Flash recovery area, which I assume you have declared inside the ASM.

Hello all,
Using Oracle 10g R2 ( 10.2.4.0) under UNIX Sun Solaris 10 , I have two rman backup types
1-L0 backup
2-L1 Backup ( Incremental cummulative)
Facts:
-Due to space pressure on archived log destination I'm trying to get less archived files possible under the archived log fs thus at any given time the archived log files destination contains archived log files aged no more than 22hours.
* The backup runs each day at 4PM and there is custom script that remove and compressed archived log files ( out of backup jobs windows) from midnight until 3:45PM
* From the above removal schedule task L0 or L1 backup will always have 24 hours worth of archived log files available during the backup.
-The Backup files Windows retention period is 22 hours meaning that each backup type L0 or L1 removes previous backup files aged more than 22hours.
-Tracking file is enabled
Target:
Knowing that our backup retention windows is 22hours.
Our next goal is to get less than 2 hours from 24 hours of archived log files available when L0 or L1 backup.
Would this affect L1 backup? and how?
Thank in advance for your response

AlexI'm not sure what you are talking about with Backup files Windows retention period ... 22 hours".
I don't know what you mean by "Our next goal is to get less than 2 hours from 24 hours of archived log files available when L0 or L1 backup."
If you are not taking your database backups with rman you are on shaky ground. The principles are simple. To recover your database from a failure, you will need to start with an L0 backup. The rman RESTORE command will then restore individual blocks from any applicable and available L1 backups. You would follow that with a RECOVER command, that would attempt to apply all necessary redo from available archivelogs. If the necessary archivelogs have been deleted, rman will attempt to restore them from a backup. You can use rman to backup AND DELETE archivelog files to keep the archivelog destination cleaned out.
I take an L0 backup once a week, an L1 the other 6 days, and archivelogs twice a day. The only time I've had a problem with the archivelog dest filling up is when some buggy code that has a loop goes into production and starts flooding redo.
Exactly how are you taking your database backups? If you are not using rman, then you are already on shaky ground. -
Solaris 8 container install problem using Ultra 60 flash archive
Hi
I have an M4000 configured with a Solaris 8 container.
I am using a flash archive from an Ultra 60.
Below is the problem when I install.
# zoneadm -z f714clone install -u -a /var/flar/fid714_20090515.flar
Log File: /var/tmp/f714clone.install.26921.log
Source: /var/flar/fid714_20090515.flar
Installing: This may take several minutes...
Postprocessing: This may take several minutes...
WARNING: zone did not finish booting.
Last entry in the logfile is...
[Fri May 15 12:21:22 BST 2009] Postprocess: Performing zone sys-unconfig
It just sits at the WARNING doing nothing.
I connected to the container console using "zlogin -C f714clone" but this just gives me a blank screen with no output and unable to do anything.
I used a different archive from a V120 and had no problems.
Is there something I need to configure for a Ultra 60.
Thanks in advance.
Steve.I got this to work. It seems, for whatever reason, that it doesn't like the '-u' flag for an Ultra 60. I installed using '-p' instead and it was fine, it even came up with the new IP I had assinged.
zoneadm -z QeSun01b install -p -a qesun01.flar
