Flash BIOS nightmare

I just flashed BIOS using the windows mode in MSI Live update on my MSI k8N neo platinum.
It told me to reboot to let new bios take effect. I said OK - it said boot from CD and never saw windows again - please help me.
I hope I haven't killed my motherboard, its almost brand new.
Did I do something wrong?

When you flash the bios it clears Cmos that is the area which holds your personalised settings such as hard disk boot order memory timings you've manually entered.
Go into bios -
1)Advanced bios settings ensure that order is  1st Boot Device > Hard Disk | 2nd boot device > Disable | 3rd Boot Device > Disable as mrbell84  suggested or 1st Floppy 2nd Hard Disk | 3rd boot device CD if you have a floppy.
2) Advanced bios settings - Hard disk boot order. select the HD you boot from and ensure it is top of the list b4 any other devices.
3) change back any other settings you manually entered previously.
save & exit bios
with luck you should boot as b4

I posted the note about my system hanging in the post screen for a few minutes before windows kicks in. It was in relation to hooking up a USB keyboard.  Anyway a simple problem turned into a nightmare.    After doing and checking some of the things some of the guys recomended, I decided to check my version of BIOS through live update. Low and behold a newer version 1.9 was availible, I had 1.5.
The new version also had some USB fixes including....Great just what I was looking for.    Well, everything went fine until it was time to reboot....then my system never came back. The screen was blank and black. I can't even get the recovery floppy to work?    Any suggestions as it was late last night and Im at work now.   Is my BIOS chip fubar?   Is it time to replace this motherboard already?

Well gentlemen, I had to laugh when I read the troubleshooting sticky.  It seems the windows booting delay problem with the saitek usb keyboard hooked up  was caused by USB support being enabled instead of disabled.   I will always read the sticky's first from now on.  Sooooo !
Here I am with this beautiful  looking paper weight with lights !
After flashing BIOS from live update  (  I know  now )   my system never came back to me.   I reset CMOS with the button, and I also removed the battery and put it back in.  No help !                                   I made the Bios recovery floppy, for the award bios recovery, but when I power up the floppy never kicks in .    I 'll try and pick up a new CMOS battery tomorrow.  Interesting though that the D bracket lights to  "  initializing Video Interface "  and there she stays.     I'm wondering now If I should just get me a new bios chip. Which to me would be the easiest way to go.  I keep my board intact and everything  stays put.   No loading all the software all over again.  I'm not without, I have my Vaio, but pczilla was my baby........ya know the feeling right.   I don't know of any other course to take unless somebody out there has a better idea, I'm all ears   ............

  • FLASHING BIOS /IRQ SLOTS

Hi i have seen many times on this forum , to "flash" bios , can someone plz explain me what exactly is it , and in what cases should i use it? (i have seen that they say to improve video card performance , but how????)   , and if someone can plz explain me , how to flash a bios , and if it is save. I also need to improve mi video card performance
Another thing , can someone plz explain me , how to determine in windonws 98 , if mi video card is in the same IRQ (i dont know well this terminlogy) or in the same spot or sharing something with other peripherals , and how can i modify it (does it really lowers video performance)??
    Well thx in advance

getting win98se to recognize your AGP card/port is a nightmare.  I'm running nvidia Geforce2 mx/mx400 on a MSI 6390/athlon1800.  Anyway, under "system info", go to hardware/irq.  look to see if any other component is sharing an irq with your video card.   If so move that card, (usually sound cards) to another slot, so their not fighting over the irq.  try latest version of 4in1, also..  beware of flash bios...good luck.....hog

I got problem with the temp after I updated the BIOS. I wanted to flash it back to the old Bios. Please help me out

  • MSI 770T-C45 won't post after flashing BIOS with M-FLASH

After flashing AMIBIOS 8.3 to v8.7 with M-FLASH via USB stick I can't get any post.
Had I read this forum before I wouldn't have done it, but here I am.
Fan starts, LEDs are off, no beeps at all, power button does nothing. Black screen.
After force flashing (yes, I am THAT stupid) the prompt said it would reboot in 5 seconds and after that nothing.
    Here's my setup:
    Board: MSI 770T-C45
    Original Bios: v8.3
Flashed Bios:  v8.7 (flashed with M-FLASH)
VGA:   EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660
    PSU:   Enermax FMAII EG465AX-VE 460W
    CPU: AMD Phenom x4 9650
    MEM: Kingston DDR2-667 4x2GB KVR667D2N5/2G
    HDD: SAMSUNG 840 SSD 250GB
    OS: Windows 8 Pro 64bit
I tried every CMOS clearing method found in previous posts and threads (including this and this.)
    1. Unplugged from power, waited 5 minutes, removed the battery (5mins), changed jumper position (5min), switched it back (5min), plugged it in (5min) and powered up with and without USB stick in the hub next to network hub with old BIOS (v8.3) inside. Pressed CTRL+HOME, anything, not a single message or beep or LED flashing.
Also I removed all RAMs and kept one in the first socket. Nothing.
I really don't know what to do next. What seems to differ from other users is LEDs non working, what does that mean?

The problem here is that after update 8.6 the m-flash module was updated, so yes your mobo is a brick, but there is still hope for it. I had the same situation a few days ago with the exact same model and was able to recover it by following the steps on listed on the below posts:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=133578.0
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=129989.0
It may seem complicated at first, but trust me its not at all.
Anyways you probably already have another mobo, send it for RMA or used it as frisbee, but it may come handy for some other doing the same noob flashing as we did

  • Flashing bios + ME ofZ87-G45 Gaming Mainboard from 1.5 to the latest 1.9.

I  have been reading and watching a lot of videos on the subject..including the general threads here.
So my understanding has become ...  do not use  liveupdate 6 (mine can't even tell what I have installed).  M-flash is the official way to flash bios and it works well if you choose uefi + ME.
I want to flash my bios because my USB 3 front ports have always been flaky and hoping for a bit more system stability (4 cpu hardware corrected errors since put together system in march) and in ultra rare case  system will become unresponsive. Plus, will have room to upgrade to new cpu in future.
I did not enable the overclocking in the bios, but it is enabled.  From what I have read ..is it then true that I must disable this before flashing?
I have also downloaded the 1.9 bios for my Z87-G45 Gaming Mainboard and placed it on a USB 2.0 flash drive that must be plugged into a back usb 2.0 port (though mouse and keyboard are in the legacy ports).
My understanding is that I simply have to boot into the bios ...with the usb stick plugged in ..  disable the overclocking and then choose upgrade uefi bios + ME.   choose the file  listed and wait.  When it is flashed, it will reboot and then flash ME.
My question here is .. how will it flash ME?  does the bios file also have the ME information?
And after the bios is successfully updated  and set back to how it was set before the flash ...  the last step, I understand ..is to install the ME driver package ...  I have the ME10  zip of 75 meg ready.
Do I understand this correctly ...  other than needing to know how ME gets flashed from the one bios file (which is E7821IMS.190)?
Is there anything else I need to ask to make this update foolproof?
    TIA for the help )

To make it foolproof follow the below, it will update bios and ME firmware. After flashing ME driver needs to be reinstalled in Windows too.
    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
A.) Download the attached archive (E7817IMS_660.rar.rar) and place it on your desktop. Do not decompress.
B.) Download and install the Forum flash tool.
C.) Insert your FAT32 formatted usb stick.
D.) Make sure that all win 8 options are disabled. (Fast Boot etc) Also make sure the legacy USB is enabled.
E.) Start the forum flash tool and select option 1. Then point the tool at the compressed archive we downloaded earlier. Then to your USB Flash Drive.
         F.) Boot to the USB
G.) Now follow the directions and let the tool flash
H.) After flashing reinstall ME drivers in Windows:  http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/intel_amt90_mb.zip

    How to Flash MSI Guides.
There are different ways to flash the bios but to keep things simple will concentrate on the MSI Official methods :-
    1) Award Flash BIOS Procedure 98/ME
This method assumes access to hd formatted using FAT32 & therefore readable by DOS.
    2) Flashing the BIOS for Users using NON FAT file system
For use with Linux based & NTFS File systems - HD Not readable from DOS.  Using this procedure the  the files are copied to the virtual drive before running the flash utility. So the flash effectively is all done in memory.
This will be the method used by the majority of us. So:-
Follow the instructions in the last link (Thanks Bas)
The details below are additional checks/notes referring to the steps in Bas's guide, which may be useful.
    Essential
    2) Know Your model number  - Is of increased Importance for NEO4 users - We have already seen instances of this.
5-1) Ensure you have a Boot Floppy with CD suport (this creates the Virtual drive used in the process) If you haven't got such
a boot disc see BootrDisc.com link in Rescources.
5-2) B4 booting floppy - Enter Bios & Load Optimised Defaults - To ensure that bios is returned to stock & any overclocking is
    turned off.
    7) If you miss the ramdrive letter the last DOS message will show your CD drive letter. The Ramdrive is the letter preceeding
the CD Drive. EG CD = D Ramdrive = C
Optional - Gives better control of procedure
    11) Use of Switch command options with AWFL833C.EXE /py/sn/wb/cc/cd/cp/r TargetBios.file
Personnaly I use the switches as does Syar :-
    Per Syar2003 Iv'e always used :
    AWFL833D W7030NMS.xxx /py/sn/wb/cc/cd/cp/r
    or
    AWFL833D W7030NMS.xxx /py/sn/wb/cc/cd/cp/f/r
And a hard reset with jumper when done .
For a more detailed explanation of switches see :-
    Syar's Bios Switch Explained
    or Syar's Bios Collection - Flashing.txt
See Also Using a Batch File to Automate bios flash
    12) after flash , enter Bios & load optimized defaults , then save + exit with no other change .
That way you have a fresh system with a fresh non problematic dmi-pool and user settings .
After this Enter Bios & Re-enter your custom settings.
From Syar - Which one do I do first?
Thanks to Bas & Syar for the majority of info in this guide

    FLASH PREPARATION
Always Load Optimised defaults & Save b4 flashing - NEVER FLASH When running an OC or Unstable.
If you need to flash & are worried about stability - run with a single module & test it it memtest 1st.
    FLASH METHODS
    1) Winflash (Syar2003) -
Winflash is safe to use if your windows and pc is stable .
How to get it Download & install MSI Live Update. Winflash is located "C:\Program Files\MSI\Live Update 3\FlashUty\Award
And as with dos flash reset bios and any overclocking to "load optimized bios default" + save, before and after flashing.
After winflash is finished it ask if you want to reboot - answer no , and shutdown (turn off) windows/pc instead .
After that disconnect the PSU's AC and reset the cmos with the jumper on the board .
This is how I use it , - safest way .
Note ! Place checkmarks on bootblock / dmi area /update all /reset cmos
    Using Winflash - Syar2003's GuideWinflash
    2)  MSI Guides for flashing using a floppy
2 Flavours depending on OS the majority of us use the 2nd as dos floppies can't read a NTDS partition.
2-1) Award Flash BIOS Procedure 98/ME
This method assumes access to hd formatted using FAT32 & therefore readable by DOS.
2-2) Flashing the BIOS for Users using NON FAT file system

THeres what i downloaded, shortly after i tried to restart my comp but it was all frozen. I used the button to turn it off and when i turn it back on its all black. Nothing happens, it just sits there. What the ****? This is the biggest bull that has ever happened.
How can u download an update and now ur computer is useless? Any ideas? Thx.

    I have a P105-S6024
    I downloaded the Flash Bios
    03-04-2009 BIOS
ACPI FLASH BIOS 4.70 for Satellite blah blah blah.
While it was working the install got frozen and my comp froze. So i turned it off with the button and it never came back on. Well the screen is black, the fan works, the icon that looks like a cake blinks and then turns off.
I dont understand. Toshiba said i might have to replace motherboard? WTF! Are you serious my computer was fine before this. I was just playing Killing Floor everything was going great and i decided to update some stuff. I really wish i didnt do this man, this is bull. I dont have the money to fix this right now if it is a motherboard problem.

  • N500 won't boot windows xp after flashing BIOS

Hi, I purchased an N500 a couple weeks ago, it's been running fine on xp, except occassionally I'd get disconnected from the internet (a line problem, not the computer, happens here in egypt) but the wireless would not automatically reconnect to my line once the line was back up.  The log file for the wireless card said something like "unable to set proper band" when this happened.  Anyway my driver version was the latest version, so I thought maybe I needed to update bios.  So I flashed bios using the flashbios utility that is listed on the lenovo website in the download section dedicated to my laptop model.  The laptop then restarted itself, and then I got the black screen that says "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start correctly...." blah blah blah.with options to start up in safe mode, last known configuration that worked etc.  However when I choose ANY of these options about 3 seconds later I get the blue screen of death, and the computer restarts!  So how do I get myself out of this mess!  Thanks Lenovo for that great Flash utility by the way!!

Try reinstall the OS. I hope it works. My opinion is when you update BIOS, The OS detected as a new computer (for some pcs). Try repair The OS with boot from CD.
    Good Luck,....

  • What we need - a guide on how to flash bios, setup bios, and raid

Ok, a topic I see very often on many forums, and several times here, is the following; How to flash bios, how to setup the bios settings, and how to setup the raid array, and then setup the bios to boot from the raid array. Could we perhaps pull our heads togheter and write a detailed guide on these three topics, taking into account how to do it on the most used (commonly written about) MSI boards? and perhaps put as a sticky?
It would help many novice users trying to deal with these problems. I am willing to write on the subject of flashing bios on the MSI K8N SLI Platinum and how to install a Bios Saviour.

  • How can i flash bios without floppy drive

i need help with flashing bios without a floppy because although the floppy is in windows and the bios every time i try to use it, it says to insert a disc i have seek floopy enabled and it post as if it is ok the drive works i have tried 2 drives 2 cables and turned the cables round tried all i can i think lol ....
    thanks guys

it can also be done using a CD-rom. I flashed my BIOS twice using cd-rom. Use Nero or any cd-writing program to write the bios files you download to a CD. Afterwards, just use the Windows 98 installation cd to boot into DOS, then take out the Windows 98 CD and put in the CD with the BIOS files on it and run the program just like from a floppy.
