Flash book

Anyone can recommend Flash book focussed on actionscript
(FLash MX 2004 or
Flash 8) with good tutorials (medium - advanced)?
- SAMS Teach Yourself Flash MX Actionscript in 24 hours
is one of the great book I found.

Colin Moock's AS books are very good. Books published by
Friends of Ed. or even the Visual Quickstart Guides...all depending
on your skill level and needs. A trip to the local mega-bookstore
for a few hours of browsing should help you decide on what's best
for you.
Good luck!

  • Screen Painter how to, manual or flash book

    Is there a screen painter manual, how to or flash book?
    I started using it but the help is to simple, for now I want to create a form that will ask for an inventory code and bring in description and barcode field.  Then the last field will ask for a quantity, that I will read with my add on to print barcode labels.
    Regards,
    William Burgos

    Hi William Burgos
    Screen painter is very basic. It only creates a screen. So all you do is make a new form, drop things on it like a text box, combo box, matrix and so on. But screen painter itself has no logic and you can't set it to do certain actions.
    Screen painter only creates the form. Then you through code must load the form that screen painter created, this form is actually a XML form. Through code you must also apply all the logic.
    Hope this helps

  • Flash Book is really inflexible and annoying

    I'm trying to convert a document that was completely written
    on Macromedia Flash Book to PDF, DOC, or some other format where I
    can actually print the document and search for words within the
    document. But on Flash book, none of this is possible. (I wonder if
    the creator actually thought about publishing the doc in PDF
    instead?)
    Anyways, the only solution I've found was something called
    Flash Handout, which claims to convert the Flash Book SWF to PDF.
    But it's $99 and there has to be some other solution. I could also
    take a screenshot of each and every frame (the document totals over
    200 pages) and convert the image to text through OCR, but that is
    too time consuming.
    Please, help me.

    Thank you sooooo much! I downloaded Swifter app and find it to be useless, I asked for a refund and they said I would have to go thru Apple.

  • Does anybody know of a good flash book?

    Hello, I'm very new to flash, and wanted to know if any of
    you knew of a good tutorial/referance book for FLASH CS4 that I
    could use to help teach myself flash.
    Thanks!

    Mumasatus,
    > Hello, I'm very new to flash, and wanted to know if any
    of you
    > knew of a good tutorial/referance book that I could use
    to help
    > teach myself flash.
    Flash is one of the most versatile tools I know. You can use
    Flash for
    everything from TV cartoons (no programming at all), to
    custom slideshows,
    banners, and other Web eye candy (perhaps some programming),
    to games, music
    players, video players, and applications (potentially heavy
    programming).
    This means you can focus on quite a variety of disciplines,
    so for
    anyone to recommend a book, it will probably help to hear
    more about the
    projects you're interested in pursuing. There are books
    specifically on
    animation (cartoon or otherwise), on illustration, on making
    applications,
    on demoing (faking) applications, on programming in general,
    and even on
    extending the capabilities of the authoring tool.
    If you're interested in a good general-purpose reference --
    something to
    give you a broad sense of the basics -- I'll go ahead and
    mention the
    friends of ED title I just co-authored with my buddy Tom
    Green (not *that*
    Tom Green, the other one). It's called "Foundation Flash CS4
    for
    Designers," and this new edition is nearly 700 pages. We
    cover the work
    space, the various drawing tools, text, audio, video, two
    chapters on
    animation, CSS, XML, the UI components, and more.
    http://www.FoundationFlashCS4.com/
    There's also a CS3 version, if you're using CS3:
    http://www.FoundationFlashCS3.com/
    Both of those websites link to the publisher, where you can
    read sample
    chapters, and Amazon.com sells both for around $25 apiece,
    which is pretty
    cheap. There aren't any reviews yet for the CS4 edition, but
    the reviews
    for our CS3 book are generally really good.

  • Recommend any good flash books...

    Hi,
    I want to learn how to connect flash CS3 to databases/dynamic
    information etc....Can anyone recommend any good books. I just
    bought Flash and PHP Bible but don't think much of it (it keeps
    referring to a companion website that doesn't exist - the book only
    came out this month). I want to learn how to connect databases with
    flash, get dynamic content and things like that. Have any of you
    guys used such a book that you thought was great?
    Cheers...
    Ben.

    There are a lot of good online tutorials and such. If you
    really want to do
    it right, learn to use AMFPHP, a remoting gateway for PHP.
    It'll make your
    life much easier if you do any fair amount of database work
    with Flash. I
    still use LoadVars for simple forms and such, but for
    anything bigger I use
    AMFPHP / remoting.

  • Judge a flash book by its recommendations

    I went to Waterstones to look for Flash CS5 How To - Tips and Tricks publications. Something along the lines of the WoW books for Photoshop and Illustrator. To my surprise, they had a grand array of none, absolutely nothing - not one single book. Considering CS5.5 is already out, I very much doubt they will be getting any stock in soon either on CS5 since it's out of date already.
    So . . . Has anyone purchased a good Flash CS5 guide book that they would recommend. I am looking for a book more geared towards Web Design in Flash as opposed to Animation in it's traditional sense. I was hoping to find a book that Deconstructs some of those Super Funky Websites like - Waterlife CarlCox or Knekt and let's us newbies in on the act - one that reveals the really clever and controlled uses of flash.
    As much as I love Animation it's not my thing. I am much more interested in the Design and Interactive Nature that Flash can bring to websites.
    If you know of a good book - please let me know and maybe I can order it on-line since my local bookshop has nothing to offer.
    thanks

    Thanks,
    But I do need somtimes books from previous generation, 1.0.2.2, 9.0.2, DB books, eBusiness Suite core tech books, and so on.
    Seems that a basic feature - you have the book part number, but you cant find it by this number - is missing.

  • Passing a variable into HTML to play a Flash file

    I'm trying to create a simple SWF file that can receive the name of a FLV file in the HTML file and play it since I have many FLV files.  Basically using the technique of FlashVars.  I've set the contentPath/source in the components to be blank, and set my actions in the first frame to be player.source = filename, as was instructed to do so in a Flash book I am reading.  I then set the "filename" variable to a file in the same path as the web page in the HTML file, however, all I get is a blank Flash player skin.  The FLV file will not load.  I also tried setting the "filename" variable to load the FLV from a public website in the same domain and on another domain, but it still doesn't work.  Any ideas on what could be wrong?   I am using Adobe Flash CS 4.

    1) You mention that there are 3 locations that need to reference FlashVars in my HTML file, but I made only 2.  Where should the 3rd change be made?  Below is my code:
    <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=10,0,0,0" width="640" height="480" id="flashvar" align="middle">
        <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
        <param name="allowFullScreen" value="false" />
        <param name="movie" value="flashvar.swf" />
        <param name="loop" value="false" />
        <param name="quality" value="high" />
        <param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" />
        <param name="FlashVars" value="filename=file.flv" />
        <embed src="flashvar.swf" loop="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" FlashVars="filename=file.flv" width="640" height="480" name="flashvar" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer" />
        </object>
    The filename=file.flv is located in the same web directory as the flashvar.swf file.  Am I supposed to set the filename=www.mydomain.com/file.flv?  Or am I supposed to set the filename=c:\directory.\file.flv?
    2) I don't care if I'm using AS2 or AS3.  I just need this to work.  I thought I would post in AS2 since it would be more compatible with previous FlashPlayers.  And for the record, I am using contentPath.  My understanding is that the difference in this case would just be contentPath versus source.  My actionscript on the first frame is: player.contentPath = filename;

  • Is it possible to save a Flash video from a webpage?

    So you can't right / ctrl click and save as, but is there any other way of saving Flash videos from webpages? Or would that conflict with what Flash was designed to do? (I'm thinking that perhaps publishers want to control and monitor viewing of their content, rather than release it for uncontrolled redistribution. Fair enough.)
    As someone looking at getting into publishing Flash content, is there any way for me to enable viewers to download content? I haven't got to the Publishing for Web chapter in my Flash book yet, so maybe I'll learn all about this soon enough...
    ...though any input would be appreciated.

    Yay it worked after a bit of trial and effort (was holding buttons Dow too long).  Thanks so much for your help

  • PROBLEM TO COMBINE MY FLASH PROJECT

    hi guys...i'm newbie using flash cs4.so i learned using flash
    book "flash cs4 classroom in a book".the problem is i have 4 flash
    works that contain videos,sounds,photos, and many more.then when i
    combine it and play,then i click to go to 1st page.but when i click
    a button to view the photos in 1st page,it doesnt display the image
    and just go back to the main page.same goes to other pages.it
    always return to the main page.how to settle this problem?what is
    the suitble coding that i need to put in action?
    this is the coding i've done so far.
    var myLoader:Loader=new Loader ();
    chronology_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,
    chronologycontent);
    function chronologycontent(myevent:MouseEvent):void {
    var myURL:URLRequest=new URLRequest("chronology.swf");
    myLoader.load(myURL);
    addChild(myLoader);
    photos_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, photoscontent);
    function photoscontent(myevent:MouseEvent):void {
    var myURL:URLRequest=new URLRequest("photos.swf");
    myLoader.load(myURL);
    addChild(myLoader);
    totkoh_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, totkohcontent);
    function totkohcontent(myevent:MouseEvent):void {
    var myURL:URLRequest=new URLRequest("totkoh.swf");
    myLoader.load(myURL);
    addChild(myLoader);
    videos_and_songs_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,
    videos_and_songscontent);
    function videos_and_songscontent(myevent:MouseEvent):void {
    var myURL:URLRequest=new URLRequest("videos_and_songs.swf");
    myLoader.load(myURL);
    addChild(myLoader);
    myLoader.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, unloadcontent);
    function unloadcontent(myevent:MouseEvent):void {
    removeChild(myLoader);
    chronology_mc.gotoAndPlay(1);
    photos_mc.gotoAndPlay(1);
    totkoh_mc.gotoAndPlay(1);
    videos_and_songs_mc.gotoAndPlay(1);

    Your idea so great, just not sure how to go about it.
    I purchased templates from www.bigbangtemplates.com and was hoping I could edit at least one of those to save time, as I haven't used actionscript, other than testing a few simple things out and have book available.  I was hoping some of the obvious navigation would already be in place and I could replace pieces, etc.
    I have or can quickly create some supporing graphics for my visuals, but need to focus on a visual that show's the company, it's five or so areas of interest, some kind of narrowing in on each one with some more text, back to the menu, on to the next one, etc.  That's just a rough guess.
    I also purchased some video backgrounds, if that helps for flair, without beeing cheezy. :-/
    Just wondering if this is more or less a joke to be able to accomplish this and if this is going to be a task beyond the rusty beginner? If so, I think I need to just shoot myself. Thanks for the assist!

  • Books? AS3 & Web Design...

    Im new to everything programming wise, the epitome of a newbie. But I really want to learn. I can work the timeline, make animations etc, but I cant
    get tutorials to teach me actionscript because they either expect you to have background knowledge or are using AS2.
    I have the latest copy of Flash, and am obviously using AS3.
    So from what I understand the way to go is to buy a book (feel free to correct me if im wrong) so can anyone point me in the direction of a book that
    accepts the fact that I know nothing about AS to start with.
    Also the reason I want to learn flash I to design websites. Is this the best way to learn to create websites? And Is there any subsequent web design packages that go with it that I need to learn?

    Well it would make things a little easier if you already had a background in working with Actionscript, but I think reading through a book is a good way to go about it. I typically will spend some time at Barnes & Noble reading through Flash books and taking notes.Here is a book that I think is really good at getting you started in AS3: 'Learning Actionscript 3.0,' http://www.learningactionscript3.com.
    Another thing I think that helps a lot is watching video tutorials, so you can the actual steps that are being made. I think Lynda.com is a great place to get good video tutorials, but it's a paid service; I'm not sure if they have a trial but it would be worth a look.
    Well good luck with your adventure.

  • Please Help! Flash Template Problem

    Hello all. I am in desperate need of some help with coding
    problems. I recently bought a flash template for a photography
    website. I know flash a bit... (been through about 300 pages in the
    flash book) but i'm by no means a pro.
    Only problem is I don't have it up so I can't really show you
    guys what i'm talking about.
    it's a very basic site with categories on the left (animals,
    architecture, etc) and thumbnail images on the right. Only problem
    is that I've spent hours and hours searching through the supplied
    files but i can not for the life of me figure out how to edit those
    categories OR the descriptions of each thumbnail that appears under
    the category column when the mouse is held over each individual
    thumbnail. Almost all the supplied files in the library are
    basically blank with outlines of shapes and nothing else. I have no
    idea what to do.
    Would it be possible to somehow send someone the file (or
    maybe i can upload the file to an ftp site?) and have someone just
    give it a quick look? I've asked three people at work (whose job it
    is to know flash) to find it and none of them can. Thanks in
    advance for any help.

    All of that seems to be in a file titled: "images.xml". You
    can open that file in a text editor. In there you'll see the
    category names and the image descriptions. Just change the text to
    what you want to see and save the file.

  • Brand New To Flash

    Hi:
    I have just installed flash and have worked throught the
    first tutorial. Everything went fine until I got to the
    ActionScript part. It seems overwhelming. I just want to do simple
    things like have a slide show play a series of still images when my
    site is accessed. I guess my question would be, can I just copy
    scripts from somewhere to do basic things like this slideshow or do
    I have to really learn to write script. If someone could briefly
    explain how this all works I would be very grateful.
    Thanks,
    Rex

    Most of us learn by studying other people's scripts. If you
    copy another person's script and then modify it, you're learning by
    it. It's up to your own standards of ethics whether you would use
    such a modified script in your website. Though you'll find lots and
    lots of scripts that people willingly share at places like
    flashkit.com and actionscript.org.
    ActionScript does seem overwhelming at first. It certainly
    did for me. I got over that by following some simple tutorials in a
    few basic "Teach-Yourself-Flash" books such as the Visual
    Quickstart Guide. Then I read Colin Moock's "ActionScript For Flash
    MX: The Definitive Guide", which is by far the best book for
    learning ActionScript theory and syntax. Though you might want to
    wait on that and just have fun playing with AS.

    I don't think you're understanding exactly what
    crossdomain.xml is for...
    These major sites have it wildcarded so that people can
    develop Flash
    applications that use those sites API's/services - and run
    them from any
    domain they like. So, I can develop a Flash book finder, that
    grabs data
    from Amazon, and stick it on my blog.
    Other sites that don't want to let just anyone access their
    data, specify
    only the domains they want to allow access from. I use a
    crossdomain.xml
    file on a current project and it works as it should - only
    allowing access
    from the three domains I have listed.
