Flash Card Image Recovery

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone here knows of a (free) program for MAC OSX, Panther to recover images from Compact Flash card? Came back from an event and put card in reader and it says 0, zero images to download. Appreciate feedback! Am really bummed out.. hope I can recover, though not sure if the card has failed or how to test for that.

Hello Loretta,
You may consider File Juicer,
http://echoone.com/filejuicer/flashcards
but it is not free. I suppose it depends on if you think the photos are worth spending €12. It does give you the chance to see if there are any photos that can be recovered before you buy. This leads to the obvious consideration that something may have gone wrong on the day, and no photos were recorded on the flash card.
If you use this software and it shows some old images on the card, be sure they are the ones you expect and not older ones previously deleted. Going by date is probably the best way to check that.
Maybe someone else can offer you a link to a free application but this type of product usually costs, as they are selling an ability that many people usually are willing to pay for, but still for under U$20 it may be worth it.

  • Images can be viewed when inserting compact flash card but many just black when imported. What's up?

When I insert the compact flash card containing 158 images (Raw+jpeg Fine) into the Mac I can view all images, however after I import them only about half of them can be viewed. The remaining images are blacked out even though the info for each image is available. The card was reformatted prior to use. What do you think the problem might be?

Upload off the flash card to a folder on your Desktop (can be done with Image Capture) and see if they can be viewed with Preview. If the can  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import the photos and test to see if the same problem persists.
Also make sure that the RAW files from your camera are supported by the operating system and iPhoto.

  • I have made flash cards on my ipad.  I am trying to put images on them.  How do I do this?

My daughter is working on a project for school.  She has made flash cards and is trying to put images onto them... She has taken the pictures using her camera.  Now what does she have to do to put the pictures onto the flash cards?
    Thanks!!

She says she used Ifree Flash Cards???  I don't know anything about the IPad.  I did however try to copy and paste but I guess it doesn't work the same as on a computer???
Everytime we tried to copy the photo all it will do is make an extra copy?
Thanks for your answer and any help.

  • How can I get my new ipad 4 to read my compact flash cards? If not can I download the images directly from my camera?

how can I get my new ipad 4 to read my compact flash cards? If not, can I download the images directly from my camera?

Tom, thanks for your quick reply. I'm a commerical photographer using Canon 5D mk2's mostly and have in the past just downloaded images to a mac book for backup. I really liked the compact size of the Ipad and just got the retina model with the camera connection kit and seem to be hearing that CF readers can't be used with it b/c they draw too much power. Seems like I remember reading I could use a cord that might have come with my cameras to download directly to the Ipad. I haven't tried it yet as I can't find the connection but then you just said it can't be done?
I'm COMPLETLY lost as to your "first pluging in a flash drive to my computer, advice. Do you mean Ipad when you say computer?  "then put your movie/photo files into the folder." HOW????????
Then plug it into the Ipad??????     TOTALLY lost.
Also your saying just "do a google search for a reader doesn't work b/c NONE are able to work with the newer Ipads b/c they use TOO much power or so everyone says everyone that have tried.
Hope you can help a little more b/c I'm really getting frustrated with all the conflicting advice!

  • Error (Err 02) in Canon 7D Mark II when doing image copy from SD to Flash card; is this a bug?

Using hardware and firmware as:- Camera: Canon 7D Mark II firmware ver. 1.0.4.- Flash card (1): Kingston 64 GB ultimate 266X- SD card (2): SanDisk 32 GB Extreme 60 MB/s Both cards where bought from authorized dealer, and looks genuine. Steps to generate the error:1: Test SD card (2) on PC with H2testw with no problems2: Format Flash card (1) in camera3: Format SD card (2) in camera, using low level format4: Take 1505 JPG images in high resolution to the SD card (2)5: Copy images from SD card (2) to Flash card (1) After copying of about 200 images, this resulted in error "Err 02", which cays:"Card2 cannot be accessed. Reinsert/change card2 or format card2 with camera." The problem had occurred previously with a Lexar SD card, so the above steps were made in order to reproduce the error and describe the exact steps taken for the error to occur. Are there anybody else that experience the same error ? Does this look like a bug in the Canon 7D Mark II using firmware ver. 1.0.4, or is there a way I can make it work ? Best regardsMortenZdk

Canon 2nd level support contacted me yesterday.
They said that this issue was unknown in their system.
In order to proceed they needed to read out additional error information from the camera, and such read-out is only possible on an authorized service size, since the software for such read-out is not available for users.
Canon where not interested in providing me the software to do the error read-out, so I could send this to them for further investigation in relation to the support case.
I suggested that the support person should request that such software for error read-out is made available for the end user, in order to provide further information in relation to support case, but the support person was not interested in going forward with such an idea.
Canon were not interested in trying to reproduce the problem them self, even through I offered to send them the SD and Flash cards that caused the problem.
So all Canon could do was to tell me to spendt additional time and money sending the camera to a service size, and then having to miss the camera for 14 days during while the service site investigates.
I must admit, that this has left me with a bad experience in relation to buying a relatively expensive Canon camera together with high-end brand memory cards. In my opinion, it looks like Canon is not giving the end user any good ways of determined the reason for an error, which could lead to product improvement for example a firmware fix.  All I can do, if I want to move on this this, and potentially help Canon fix their product, is to spend additional time and money sending the camera to a service size.
There is definitely room for improvement!

  • Reading Compact Flash cards

My new Macbook Pro arrives tomorrow and I'm wondering what will be the fastest way to upload images from my Compact Flash cards. I presently have a PowerBook G4, for which I was able to find a very fast CF card reader that slid directly into the PCMCIA slot (I believe that's what that slot is called). Since the Macbook Pro doesn't have the same slot, what is my best (fastest) option for uploading images from my CF cards?

probably an external USB card reader

  • Compact Flash Cards Won't Eject

I'm using Lexar UDMA and non-UDMA compact flash cards. I have the combination Lexar CF/SD pop-up USB card reader. It works on my MacPro. On the new unibody Macbook I bought last fall, there is a consistent problem mounting and ejecting cards of either type. When the cards mount, trying to eject them invariably brings up error messages... The first one says, "Can't eject, some app is using the card", if I do nothing often I get another message that says "Device removed improperly...". Then the card appears to eject, but then won't remount. Just a mess. Was in Africa for three weeks shooting and the only reliable way to download images was USB straight from camera to laptop.
Anyone else experiencing this sort of issue?

I'm not having the same issue, bought thought I may be able to help troubleshoot. Are the Mac Pro and MacBook running the same OS level? (i.e. 10.5.6 like your MacBook is)
Also, are you using the pop-up USB reader on both the Mac Pro and the MacBook?
Last, what are you using to move the photographs once you've got the card inserted, are you just dragging and dropping or importing with Aperture or iPhoto?

How do i prevent this from happening? I have looked in system prefereces....maybe i am over looking something, Thanks

iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> General -> Connecting Camera opens.... And select your preferred app.

  • Image recovery software

I am trying to find some image recovery software, I have looked at disk doctor, but it looks a bit shdey.
so basically i could do with a ligit version of something that works.
    many thanks

This is what you should see:
Cisco 5500 Series Wireless LAN Controllers
•Field Recovery Image is upgraded from 7.0.112.21 to 7.6.101.1
    •Bootloader is upgraded to 1.0.20
•Offline Field Diagnostics is upgraded from 0.9.28 to 0.9.35
•FPGA Revision version is upgraded to 1.7
•Environment Controller (MCU) Image version is upgraded to 1.8
•USB Console Revision version is upgraded to 2.2
The issue is if you were upgrading the FUS to 1.9.0.0, you should of had console access to see what was going on.  Typically the primary will download the image and write to flash and then the secondary would upload the image from the primary and write to flash.  The secondary would need to be rebooted first then the primary. If the sysinfo didn't match between the two, then you need to upload the FUS 1.9.0.0 and do it again. This is if your have AP SSO enabled. If it's an N+1 configuration, then you need to upload the FUS 1.9.0.0 to the WLC that hasn't had everything upgraded and perform the upgrade again. From the console you can choose what you want upgraded by skipping the upgraded that is up to date.

  • CRASHED CF card -- data recovery??

    Hello,
My 4GB compact flash card crashed yesterday (containing all the pix from a wedding I'd just shot). Does anyone know how to recover the data (hopefully using a Mac utility, not Windows -- but I'll do whatever necessary).
The data is still there I believe — but it’s unreadable on the computer and on the camera — the files show up on the computer as just hieroglyphics and when I try to open any of them, suddenly that hieroglyphic file disappears from the list. However, the card shows only 1 gigabyte of 4 available — meaning that the data from the 300+ shots is still in there, but inaccessible.
It is a Hoodman 4GB Compact Flash card.
    Thanks so much in advance!!

    Hi, Jeepers
I've used Boomerang Data Recovery software before and have had great success. Be aware though that they only let you let you install the software on one machine, they should let a licensee install on a laptop and tower.

  • Flash card 101

No, not like Secure digital or one of those memory sticks.
I am trying to write a flash card program for memorising japanese vocabulary as my first dev project on mac.
My formal programming education ended after a C- of programming 101 in my local college, but I have been programming for a while now.
The program simply shows japanese word/englisgh word (i hope mac os x has no problem having japanese characters) and then once a button is pushed, shows the equivalent of that in the other language.
Is apple script an appropriate language for this purpose?
I haven't even installed xcode yet, but I have a couple questions:
    1) how do I do interface with interface builder? this would be my first project with GUI.
    2) how do I store the words combinations in a "database" ?
I can image something like this:
    wordsdatabase.txt
    1:neko:cat
    2:inu:dog
and so forth, but i don't know how to implement it.
Thank you for reading and replying!
P.S. Why not just use paper, pencil and scisor? It's more fun this way LOL

Is apple script an appropriate language for this purpose?
Plain vanilla AppleScript could possibly be used, but the app would be somewhat clunky because AS doesn't offer much flexibility with it's GUI user interaction.
On the other hand, if you want to learn and use AppleScript then an _AppleScript Studio_ application might work pretty well. AppleScript Studio is basically AppleScript + extensions for most of the Cocoa GUI elements so it gives you almost as much flexibility with the GUI as a native Cocoa app would. AS Studio apps are also written and built using Xcode (rather than Script Editor).
But if you've done C based programming in the past then there will be a learning curve for AppleScript. But for that matter, there will also be somewhat of a learning curve to start using Obj-C and Cocoa... it depends on what your level of experience is.
    1) how do I do interface with interface builder? this would be my first project with GUI.
This is sort of a vague question. When you create a project in Xcode any of the project templates that generate GUI applications will already have one or more basic/generic Interface Builder files included in the project. You just double-click them within Xcode and they'll launch IB for you.
It'll probably make more sense once you install Xcode and start playing with some of the examples. And once you've fiddled with IB a little then you'll probably have some more specific questions.
    2) how do I store the words combinations in a "database" ?
I can image something like this:
    wordsdatabase.txt
    1:neko:cat
    2:inu:dog
and so forth, but i don't know how to implement it.
This is something you'll need to decide for your particular case.
A text file like you've indicated could work.
You might also consider using a property list (.plist) file. Cocoa has some built in methods that make loading an entire plist file into an NSDictionary object really easy. In addition, the Xcode Tools installer will install "Property List Editor" which you can use to manually create/edit property list files.
Mac OS X / Cocoa also includes "Core Data" which is a data storage and retrieval API that includes support for both XML or SQLite built in. This may be overkill for your particular situation but you might want to consider looking at it.
If you decide on AppleScript or AS Studio you could potentially use a "list of lists" where each sublist contained a Japanese word and it's English equivalent. Something like this
    property wordList : {{"neko", "cat"}, {"inu", "dog"}, {"x", "y"}, ... }
-- iterate thru the words and spit them out to the event log
    repeat with wordPair in wordList
set japaneseWord to item 1 of wordPair
set englishWord to item 2 of wordPair
    log("Japanese: " & japaneseWord & " English: " & englishWord)
    end repeat
-- Generates output like this in the event log
    (*Japanese: neko English: cat*)
    (*Japanese: inu English: dog*)
    (*Japanese: x English: y*)
But the above example has the words contained in a property of the AppleScript in which case you'd have to edit and modify the script whenever you wanted to change your word list. It might be a better idea to keep your words in an external file of some sort so you could update your words without having to modify your script/program.
    There are lot's of possibilities.

  • Downloading from flash card to iPhoto5

is it possible to download select photos from flash card to iPhoto5?
seems to me every time it wants to download the entire contents of the card, which is frustrating
if possible, then how?--or is there a workaround?
    iMacG5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi shelby,
You don't have that option with iPhoto, but you do have a choice using Image Capture.
Here is what I do and the reason why.
I started using Image Capture to download all my images and Movie clips so I could make easy backups of just the photos and movie clips. I actually like doing it this way a lot better. My movie clips are downloaded into my Movies folder where I then put them in a dated folder.
My photos are downloaded into my Pictures folder, where I then put them in a dated folder. I import the dated folder into iPhoto. I also keep all dated folders from photo downloads in the Pictures folder till I get enough Movie folders and Photo folders to fill a DVD. I burn them and then delete them from the hard drive.
This way I have the photos in iPhoto and I also have just the photos backed up to DVD.
The Movies I keep on the hard drive in their dated folders until I use all the clips for my iMovie projects for the Year. I then make sure they are all burned to DVD, then I delete those from my hard drive.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

  • Lightroom 5 upgrade killed my workflow. What options are left for importing by reference from a flash card?

I just upgraded from Lightroom 1 to Lightroom 5.
I no longer see the option ~"Import from disk"
The application just magically decides what I am importing from.
Unfortunately, this used to be my workaround for keeping my workflow streamlined.
The import from disc option would allow me to import my flash card by reference
into a temporary catalog that would be active only until a full flash card
was archived. This temporarily catalog was used to delete rejects from my
flash card in a Lightroom-leveraged fashion. Once the latest photo update
on the card was clean, I would import by copy into a permanent catalog.
    This meant:
-Always two copies of images once I got back to base
-Ability to leverage develop tools in determining rejects
-No having to make a list of rejects and then deleting them separately
on the camera or through the OS
I see no way to do this with Lightroom 5 and Mac OS X.
I understand the problem might be coming from the OS change that happened
at the same time, but since ~"import from disk" is no longer in the menu, I am
suspecting the change is from the application itself.
I could probably find out the answer to my question through a bunch of experimenting,
but I thought I would float the question in an attempt to save time.
I'm not sure if I can run two versions of Lightroom at the same time on a Mac OS X
machine, but If I can, is this the only way to maintain my workflow?
    Dave

"we have serious concerns about customers accidentally importing referenced files from a card that is subsequently reformatted in the camera"
I understand. So bury the option under the, "Only use if you really know what you are doing. You could destroy everything." heading, Or even as an external file of settings for people who know what they are doing. The point is this has forced me to take a step backward in my workflow which was already a workaround from what I really wanted. Ideally I have wanted all along:
-Import from flash card to main catalog by copy *and* a special-use link back to the flash card file for each image in the catalog
-When deleting rejected photos from the catalog, I would have a third option to delete rejected photos from the flash card.
This way, I avoid not only the new problems created by the Lightroom 5 upgrade, but I would be reducing my imports from two to one. With a slow USB connection, there were advantages in only importing by reference on the first import, but since things tend to run faster these days, I think I would come out ahead overall now.
