Flash Causes Entire System to Crash

I installed Arch for the third time about a month ago, the longest I've stuck with this distro. I think Arch is here to stay. The first two times I tried Arch, I went running back to Ubuntu or Fedora. However, thats not to say that I don't have some bugs to still work out.
I'm running kernel26-lts if it matters, and I believe I'm running 32 bit flash rather than the 64 bit driver. I'm almost certain, but I'm unsure of how to double check the version of flash I'm running. After upgrading flash a week or so ago, flash video has been causing intermittent crashes. Is there a known issue with the new version of flash? Should I roll back to the previous version of flash, or perhaps try the 64 bit version?

So I installed catalyst and removed xf86-video-ati. Flash seems to work MUCH  better, haven't had a crash yet today and I've been testing it with long videos and fullscreen. I'm fairly certain that I'm running flgrx and not the fallback video drivers (mesa or something?). How should I confirm this?
Also, the following warnings appear now in my Xorg log. Is this anything to be concerned about?
grep -E '\((WW|EE)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

  • Flash player causes entire system crash with black screen

When watching a video on youtube, streaming on twitch or other things my entire system will crash with the following symptoms:
    -Black Screen
    -Intermittent stuttering sound
-Only fixable by a hard reboot (holding the power button). The reset button will NOT work. Video will NOT return, it will continue to loop this way until a hard reset.
    Your Flash Version
    11.9.900
    Your browser name
    Firefox
    Your Operating System (OS)
    Windows (Windows 7)
That information taken directly from Adobe's site. Using 64-bit, 8GB of RAM installed. ATI Radeon HD 6850 card. I have done a fresh Win 7 install a couple months ago and JUST NOW put flash back on here...now it's crashing. While times vary before the crash, I just watched a youtube video for less than 5 seconds before it happened.
Upon reboot, I get the "Windows was not shut down properly" message. No "Your system has recovered..." message, however. I've seen very few posts about this and none of the solutions help but this is REALLY pissing me off now. It happened to me before and the only fix was a fresh system install. I'm not doing that again.

    Hi Mike,
I appreciate the reply. I can run the system for days, literally, doing other tasks such as music through iTunes, gaming through Steam, voice chatting on Ventrilo. The only time I will ever experience this issue will be the five minutes I watch a youtube video or watch a stream on Twitch..
My primary HD is a relatively new Intel SSD. I do have multiple other drives but they're used for storage of media (include aforementioned music).
I have been a youtuber and streamer for a while, and i'd like to try and record the phenominon, but i'll have to do so using an external camera since i'm not sure I can stop and save the recorded data. I'll have to do so I guess so I can give a better idea of the issue occuring.
    Thanks again.

  • Premiere elements 8 causes my system to crash, suggestions?

premiere elements 8 causes my system to crash, suggestions?

Version 8 was a bit unstable upon release anyway. Have you downloaded the patch for it?
Meantime, can you please give us more information? Can you be more specific about the crash? Does it literally cause your computer to shut down and reboot?
At what point does it crash? As soon as you start it, or after you've added media to it? If the latter, what model of camdorder is this video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
What operating system are you using? Have you manually gone to Windows Update and installed the non-critical or optional updates that do not install automatically?
How fast is your processor, how much RAM do you have and how much free, clean, freshly defragmented space is on your hard drive(s)? Remember that even brand new computers are a mess of junk files and defragmentation.

  • Youtube videos cause entire system crash

    System Basics:
    AMD Phenom x6 3.2GHz
    4GB DDR3 Ram
120GB SDD Operating Drive (storage drives irrelevant)
ATI Radeon HD 5700 1GB (hardware acceleration not active)
    Creative X-Fi 7.1
    (all drivers up to date)
    OS:
    Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
(all windows updates up to date)
    Browsers:
Avant Browser (Using Flash 10.1.85.3) (32 bit browser)
Google Chrome (downloaded today with latest Flash Player incorporated) (32 bit browser)
    Issue:
I've been using Avant with the latest Flash player with no problems since install.  However, today it has started to completely crash my entire system when I start playing a youtube video.  BSOD and then system reboot.
Thinking it may be an issue with Avant (which is not the most popular and, therefore, not the most supported browser) I decided to download Google Chrome and see how things worked.
As soon as I played a youtube video in Chrome, BSOD and a system reboot.
My system is extremely stable otherwise and has had no other crashes since it was built in July.
I've noticed another person having the same issue with a Radeon graphics card, but most of the advice is concerning IE or Firefox, neither of which I'm using.
The strange thing is that this issue only started today, but my Flash Player and Graphic Drivers were both updated a week ago.  I've been playing youtube videos without issue since then until this morning.

Hi, I know there have been problems with the ATI/Flash Player as I've been on several of the threads and then read others.
Just from memory it depended on the driver version, not one particular one. Now if you didn't have that BSOD, I would say some add on or Toolbar or Anti-Virus was conflicting. Now in the FlashPlayerTrust, what files are in there?
    RealPlayer?
Also the FlashAuthor.cfg, do you use that and what for?
Do you use Skype, Quicktime? These can conflict and especially RealPlayer.
I am on my laptop now, but tomorrow I'll check some of the threads that had/have the ATI issues and see what I can find. In fact I saw one posted tonight, but didn't have time to check it. I keep a lot of folders on my work PC so maybe there will be some helpful info there. With that kind of a crash I tend to think it's ATI/Flash Player related. I don't think it is Flash Player conflicting with the driver, although affected.
That's all for me this evening,
    Thanks,

  • Importing Video to iMovie 11 Causes Entire Computer to Crash

Hi. I must say up front that I am not very Mac saavy, so I apologize in advance.
I am trying to import video from a Canon Vixia HFS200 camera in to my iMovie 11 on my iMac. I'm running OS X version 10.6.8. The other details are in the error report that I've pasted below. When I turn on the video camera, I select sync then select "Computer/Printer" for USB connection type. It will then open my iPhoto and upload photos, and then it will open my iMovie (if not already open). It can transfer to iPhoto just fine. However, when it opens the transfer window in iMovie, it stalls with an empty transfer screen and then I get the gray box of death telling me that my computer has crashed and I must re-start it.
I would appreciate any advice on this issue. Thanks!
Here is the error report I received after the last crash:

According to the link below I got from the Canon Canada website, apparently there is mentioned software to retreive images and videos from your camera.
    http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300004027/01/IB66_EN.pdf
Anyhow, since you had it working before with iMovie 11, I am suspecting that it somehow got corrupted when the mounted volume (your camera) somehow got disconnected due to inadequate battery power.  Which was why Canon recommended people use an AC adapter for this or a fresh battery before a major transfer of movie clips.  When mounted volumes disconnect abruptly for whatever reasons, iMovie 11 goes into beserk mode trying to restore that connection resulting in crashes or slowdowns.
To restore iMovie 11 back to where it was.
You need to delete iMovie's plist and cache files, 2 files located in your Home/Libary folder
    com.apple.iMovieapp.plist (document)
    com.apple.iMovieapp        (folder)
After this, you can either do 2 things.  One is run disk repair utility and execute repair permissions on the drive that iMovie resides (probably your main boot drive) or download a free utility called OnyX which is a free OSX maintenance software to do that plus some extras including clearing caches, which sometimes are the causes of system crashes.
It is available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/index.php and it will help repair permissions and clear caches.  Please download the appropriate version for your OSX (Snow Leopard).
Once that is done, reboot your computer and run iMovie 11.  Connect the cable to the camera and computer and do your import.  Make sure you have a fresh charged battery on your Canon.  This should work.
Regarding Apple Care.  The easiest way to deal with this is deal your issues with a Genius at the Apple Store.  They will help you with the registeration of Apple Care.  Just because you bought Apple Care does not necessarily mean you are registered and you should register it as soon as you got the system and Apple Care together.
Apple is a good system, but in the quest of making the system super friendly, it can sometimes be daunting to get it working again because unlike the PC, the interface itself makes it challenging to do low level stuff.

  • PE9 Burn failure at 95% causes entire computer to crash

Hi - I hope someone can help.
I am puttig together clips from mobile phones and various other devices of the first year of a babies life, it includes audio tracks on the soundtrack line as well as the audio and video on track 1. I have also included a pan&zoom slideshow of images and the total length is approx 1hr20mins.
I am not sure what the problem is, but after the disc menus (there are 4) have all encoded, the programme gets to 95% and then crashes, but it doesn't just crash the programme, it actually crashes my whole system whereby I can't use my mouse, or the keyboard to close anything.
Last week the system was working perfectly, and I have tried saving the whole movie as an mpeg to my computer which has worked perfectly, but there is something preventing the burn to finish.
I am using a Dell XPS 17 with intel i5 core processor, to hard drives (C and D) with 1TB RAM total. I use an Nvidia graphics card and have RealTek HD audio. (not sure if you need all that or if it's even the right stuff to tell you!)
    Please help!!

You've probably got a number of issues going on that are overloading the program. It's also possible you don't have enough clean, freshly defragmented space on your C and D drives. Even if these drives are huge, fragmentation to keep Premiere Elements from grabbing the contiguous space it needs. You are working a) an unusually huge video for a DVD (DVDs can only hold about 70 minutes of video), b) you may be using unnecessary large photos (see below) which can choke the program and c) you don't say where your video is coming from, but Premiere Elements needs to work much harder on video that's not miniDV, HDV or AVCHD -- and these elements are all combining into a program meltdown.
First, when you set up your Premiere Elements project, which project settings did you select? Have you ensured that this setting matches precisely your video footage? If it does, you should see no red lines above the clips on your timeline before add effects to them. Is this the case in your project?
Second, have you ensured that your photos are not larger than 1000x750 pixels in size? Using photos directly from a camera (some of which can be many times video resolution) are the chief cause of program choke.
Have you rendered your timeline (press Enter) whenever you see red lines above your clips on the timeline? When your timeline is rendered (the red lines turn green) your program will perform more efficiently and you'll have less issues with transcoding your DVD. However even this does not overcome the issues listed above.

  • What is causing my system to crash all the time.

This is the report that is being sent to Apple. What happens to these reports anyway?

  • Shockwave flash causes Firefox 24 to crash

Mozilla needs to get ahead of this. There hundreds of reports of the same crashes and the current solutions don't seem to help. We need on detailed fix for this problem, right out in front on the web site.
Chrome seems to work fine with the plug-in, if you can't fix this problem, we'll have to go to Chrome.
    Using windows XP

    reset defaults
    un-install and re-install firefox<br />
    change settings in Chrome?<br />
Check Firefox for plug-in updates (under Help-troubleshooting, I think it was about:plug-ins)<br />
    delete and re-install shockwave<br />
    I can't remember them all.

  • VLC causes entire system to lock up

I have the latest VLC from extra (2.2.1-2). It's been freezing my system so that neither mouse nor keyboard respond. I have to issue REISUB system request in order to unlock it. Sometimes it freezes immediately upon opening. Other times it freezes randomly. Has anyone else seen this behavior? It's been happening for a while but now it seems to be getting worse (i.e. it freezes immediately after a fresh boot without first running any other applications).

Telling some details about your system could help in finding the issue. For eample, if you use VDPAU acceleration with an old Radeon vga with a UVD1 engine then you are probably hit by this bug:

  • Right-click, drop-down menus in Firefox 15 cause entire Mac OS 10.7.4 system to hang, forcing manual reboot.

I bought a new MacBook Pro.
I am running Mac OS 10.7.4 with Firefox 15. Every time I right click or try to use a drop-down menu in Firefox, it causes the entire system to hang, forcing a manual reboot.
No crash reports are available as the Firefox does not actually crash.
    I have tried
1.) Starting Firefox in safe mode
    2.) Disabling all the add-ons
    3.) Resetting Firefox
    4.) Removing and re-installing Firefox
    5.) Disabling hardware acceleration
    The problem still occurs.
This is critical a critical issue as I have been using Firefox's Zotero plugin to write my PhD dissertation which is about 50% complete and now I cannot use Firefox or the Zotero plugin and have about 800 references I do not want to have to manually re-enter!! Also it is preventing me from continuing work on the dissertation as I am unable to insert references, and I have submit this thing by March!!!!

Ok, further developments. Still can't get Firefox to work; it makes Lion hang and I have to force a reboot. I tried using terminal to open FF's profile manager, delete my old profile and make a new one. Same problem.
I tried making a new user account in Mac OS, and doing another fresh install of Firefox. It worked! I was able to use drop down menus and right click without crashing the system!
However, as soon as I installed the Zotero plugin... the same issue started occurring again.
Dear programmers, please help me. It will literally take me weeks of work to re-do all of my citations using a different software or manually. There must be a way to fix this problem!

  • Mac OSX 10.6.7 update causes iTunes and entire system to be unresponsive?

    Hey all,
I updated to the latest OS X patch today and I've been having problems with iTunes crashing the system ever since.
iTunes would open and the entire system cease to be responsive: the mouse cursor does not respond to movements on the touchpad and the functions keys no longer do anything.
Is this a problem that anyone else is experiencing?

Sam problem here, all use of the latest iTunes freezes my whole computer, this has never happened to me with OS X before.
But I have friends who are not having this problem, so it is not affecting everybody. Could it be some other installed app that causes this?
Is there any simple way to downgrade to 10.6.6?

  • Sound Converter Causes System to Crash

I recently bought a Blackberry 9650 and an 8gb media card. I want to add music to my media card so I can listen to music on the train without having to bring my POS mp3 player. The problem is that alot of my music is in flac format. When I used to run Ubuntu, I always used Sound Converter, which worked great without out problems. For some reason, Sound Converter refuses to cooperate in Arch.
I have noticed the problem is more common when I batch convert, however, certain albums ALWAYS trigger a crash. This crash doesn't just cause Sound Converter to crash, but the entire system goes down. It's frustrating that such a simple task is causing such a large problem. It's possible that there is a problem with the backend, because I have had no luck converting with ffmpeg either. Ffmpeg doesn't convert my music, but rather corrupts all the .flac files involved (thank god for backups).
So, I don't really know where to start on this one. I'm sure there is a log that I could look though that would explain the cause of this problem, but I'm still a bit of an Arch Linux noob. Let me know any information that you need to diagnose the problem and I'll post it ASAP.
    Thanks!

  • System Preferences crash--caused by the FlashPlayer-10.4-10.5 plug-in. Any ideas?

I recently updated to Firefox 5 and noticed my screen saver had changed. I tried to change it back, but when I clicked on the screen saver tab, my System Preferences crashed with this message: "The problem may have been caused by the FlashPlayer-10.4-10.5 plug-in." I've tried repairing permissions to no avail. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

I am having the same problem and finding it quite frustrating. Although for me it was not a Firefox update that caused the trouble, rather it was the Flash Player update. When I reverted to an older version of FP it worked again fine, but video (youtube and hulu) didn't work properly and asked me to update. When I did the same crashing problem happens again.
I've spent a while searching for fixes but found nothing....

  • Chromium crashing entire system on opening new tab

I'm using a fresh install of Arch x64_86 at the moment, and I've installed the stable version of Chromium from the repositories (11.0.696.65). Sometimes when I open a new tab in the browser, it will cause the entire system to lock up, forcing a hard reboot. This happens roughly once a day and, as far as I can, is totally unrelated to flash or any other addons.
Any idea where I might start looking to fix this?

    The latest chromium in the repo is 12.0.742.100-1 :  http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort … =&limit=50
Can you Syu and check if it works again. If you don't get an update for chromium, try switching mirrors.

  • Snow Leopard Samsung ML-1630 Crashes entire system - what's wrong?

The printer will print, but the entire system crashes and the Mac Mini reboots each time a print job is sent. The forum points out a lot of problems with printers and the Snow Leopard upgrade, but no real help seems to have been offered.
I did download the new Samsung drivers recommended for snow leopard using the Apple link
I have removed and reinstalled the printer, several times
What's wrong? Did Apple test this before they launched the new software?
I bought the printer from an Apple store, I hope they support it still.

I agree with William on this. I use the same printer with just native OSx support.
There is one possible issue. The power that the printer draws when printing is pretty significant. My UPS (AVR) kicks in every time I print there. I do have many devices on this circuit though.
It is possible that your voltage is being pulled so low that your machine is rebooting.
If possible try the printer on a different circuit or turn off as much as possible equipment on the same circuit and give it a try.
