Flash causes Firefox to hang and never recover

This has been happening since FF 13. OS is Win server 2008 R2.
Flash plugin is updated automatically. As soon as any page with flash is loaded, firefox hangs. No way to get it to respond no matter how long I wait. Have to manually end process.
Same behaviour continues in FF 14.
I keep plugin disabled, but it is enabled sometimes after updating, and FF again hangs when flash is encountered.
Very frustrating.

OK, setting protectedmode=0 has solved the issue!

  • Having Adobe Flash Enabled caused Firefox to Hang, and then to "Not Respond".

    I Have the Following:
    Firefox 19.0
    Adobe Flash 11.6.602.171
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit SP1
After I first install a new version of Adobe Flash, everything works perfectly.
If I shut down my computer & start it up again maybe 10 minutes later, I will START having a problem.
I Click on my Firefox Icon.
Then I click on one of my bookmarks, like for Tucson Weather ( at www.weather.com ).
While Tucson Weather is "transferring data' or "waiting" or "connecting" the small blue indicator that spins to indicate that the computer is working to get the requested page loaded freezes & stops spinning.
Now, If I click any where on the page including the scroll bar, the page becomes dim & a very light color, white the cursor resembles an hour glass. This only lasts a minute or so.
If I click on the "X" to close the window, either nothing happens, or I get a message that Firefox is not responding, & do I want Windows to close the page. I have Windows close page.
Next I return to Firefox, disable Adobe Flash, & Firefox now works perfectly - Only Videos at You Tube are mostly not possible. I have had this problem since at least last September.

hello, maybe it's an issue with the protected mode in the flash plugin - you could try if [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/flash-113-crashes#w_solution-2-downgrade-to-flash-10-3 downgrading to flash 10.3] (which is still supported) or [http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071#TemporaryWorkaround disabling protected mode] makes a difference.

  • Shockwave flash causes firefox 4 crash

shockwave flash causes firefox 4 hangs. it happens whether using the latest or the previous version of flash. removing flash solves the problem but removing flash is not a solution. this happens on a computer with Windows 7. However on another computer with XP this does not happen.

#Download a copy of Flash from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and save it to your desktop.
#Then download the [http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html Flash Uninstaller]
#Close Firefox via File | Exit
#Run the uninstaller to remove Flash from Firefox. It will also remove it from IE.
    #Reboot
#Run the Flash installer you downloaded to your desktop earlier (do not start Firefox). This will install it on Firefox only.
#Open IE and go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and choose Run when you see the prompt.
#Test the installation in both Firefox and IE by going to: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

  • Sites using flash/shockwave cause Firefox to hang.

If the shockwave flash plugin is enabled on version >22, visiting a site that contains flash content will cause Firefox to hang/react extremely slowly. I've tried disabling all add-ons with no effect.
I'm using shockwave flash 11.2.r202.310 but it doesn't seem to matter when version of flash I use.

    Thanks for the replies guys.
ComputerWhiz: No firewall or AV installed on my laptop.
cor-el: Nothing works. It is the shockwave flash plugin + >=v23 that is the problem. I've tried safemode, I've completely deleted everything eg moving the .mozilla directory and started a virgin firefox with the same results.

  • I downloaded an update to Firefox last night, and now Firefox just hangs and won't connect. It started out okay this morning, but now it won't work at all.

Even with a brand new computer, Firefox frequently hangs and/or quits spontaneously. I downloaded the latest update last night, and it worked okay for about a half hour this morning, then quit.

Do you have Internet Security Software turned on in your Internet Explorer?
I turned mine off, as I have Norton AV. Go into Internet Explorer and check to see if you have that on and try turning that off...and then try to get back onto FF. You may have to restart your computer, I'm not sure, as I'm not a techie. I just know that the Internet Security Software clashed with my Norton AV.
    Good luck!!!

PS Go with the user's suggestion above me, sounds the right way to go...thank God for the techies, eh? :)

  • Gmail and flash causes firefox to crash on chat initialisation

Logging into Gmail with firefox 10.0.2, everything loads fine until the chat initialises.
The browser hangs (becomes completely unresponsive) but doesn't crash. Closing the relevant instance of the Flash plugin (11.1.102.62) resolves the problem. Other flash sites work fine, as does Gmail on webkit. Have been experiencing this since the latest update.
Included some crash IDs from earlier today, though I was never prompted for these by the browser.

    Hi Matt,
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I have been through the troubleshooting section.
The title above is a little off, neither the browser nor the flash plugin actually crash, they just hang. No warning screen shows. I've disabled plugins one by one while in safe mode to check for any other conflicts. Flash hardware acceleration is disabled and the debugger version is installed (no runtime errors are occuring in the gmail applet).
This has only been an issue since the 10.0.2 update.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Longer Flash videos cause Firefox to hang.

I let the video download completely and it will play, skipping a few frames on occasion for approx. 10 min before the video freezes. The audio continues but Firefox hangs and takes about 98% of my CPU according to Task Manager, making it nearly impossible to run anything else. It used to run pretty good. Maybe it's the upgrades? Short videos work okay mostly, but the longer ones die.

  • What is slowing firefox, it hangs, and I did what was recommended..

I used to use firefox almost exclusively, it was so good. But I had to reinstall, and also there are newer versions and it has become such a troublesome browser I use the others.
The main problem is firefox hangs if I click a link in a webpage, and it actually times out -- something I haven't had happen in years. I have the fastest connection, I have a fast notebook. This had never been a problem before.
One troublehooting suggestion was to disable extensions and add-ons. I did look there, but I don't have any. There were three extensions, all disabled.
Then I looked under the "add-ons" manager and there are a dozen. I all have them set on "ask to activate." I don't know if this is the problem. I don't want this browser using anything other than the adobe pdf file, so I have set it so it won't assume and change my pdf files.
I have no issues with video and sound. But the hanging and timing out is making me nuts.
I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks,
    Gina

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause
Firefox issues. '''Disable All of them.'''
Plugins (ask to activate) are programs that Firefox finds already in your
computer. Add-ons are programs that you have placed in Firefox. But
some are added by virus type programs without you knowing it.
    '''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web link}
    While you are in safe mode;
Type '''about:preferences'''<Enter> in the address bar
    Select '''Advanced > General.'''
Look for and turn off '''Use Hardware Acceleration'''.
Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?
    Then restart.

  • For 2 days, firefox just "loads" and never opens. Intermittent.

OK> Yesterday, and today, from time to time, when I try to open Firefox, including Facebook, it just loads and never opens.
This was shortly after I clicked on the new version which Firefox suggested I download.

You are experiencing a firefox [[Firefox hangs|hang]]. This could be caused by hyperthreading:
    # Right-click the shortcut icon you use to start Firefox.
    # Select Properties.
    # Select the Compatibility icon.
    # Select Run this program in compatibility mode.
    # In the drop-down for compatibility mode, select Windows 98/Windows ME.
    # Click OK.
    # Restart Firefox to see if the hanging has gone away.
This also could be caused by a messy profile. Try running firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] and let us know if that helps.

  • Flash slows FF with hangs and 'not responding' messages.

Shockwave flash is causing hangs giving 'firefox is not responding' message and slows my internet experience. I know its the flash add-on because when i disable it, firefox performs much better. I've tried all the suggestions concerning flash problems on this site and nothing has worked. I am running win 7 64 bit (home premium). plus Firefox 36.0.1. All drivers appear to be up to date but i will double check.
my question is.... is there a way to easily disable/enable flash w/o going into the add-ons manager? Depending on what i'm doing, i'm in add-ons manager to either enable it when i need it or to disable it when firefox is slow and hangs.
I've gotten to the point where i just open add-ons manager in a tab and leave it open because i know i'll probably be in there turning flash on or off depending on how its effecting my machine.
Also, i tried running flash in 'ask to activate' mode, but you have to reload the page so it can find the add-on.
This problem has been ongoing for a couple of months now; Firefox performance used to be so much better but this problem doesn't seem to be getting resolved. I like firefox, I really don't want to go to another browser.
    Thanks,
    Duke

Hi Duke, your bookmarks and other Firefox data actually are in the C:\Users folder so it's safe to delete the folder under C:\Program Files (or C:\Program Files (x86) on 64-bit systems).
When you run the installer again, it should detect and use your previous settings folder. To get a clean start on that as well, you can:
    '''Create a new Firefox profile'''
A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should come with completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
''This does not replace your existing setup; the new folder exists in parallel with your current settings.''
Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
    firefox.exe -P
    ''Don't delete anything here.''
Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like March29, and ignore the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
    Does that work any better?
Note: When returning to the Profile Manager to switch back to your normal profile, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

  • Java apps causes Firefox to hang, Firefox's or Java's fault?

Recently I've had serious issues with websites using Java, all of them causes Firefox to promptly freeze and I have to restart the browser. I can't enter any site that uses Java with the Java Platform enabled. I have tried reinstalling Java and different versions, along with any suggestions I could find in Firefox's and Java's FAQs, but so far nothing has worked.

skunktrader wrote:Maybe it isn't hanging, there might just be a very long timeout waiting for an ipv6 response
At first I thought that couldn't be the problem because it is a long timeout, but then I thought about it and realized that I've seen TCP/IP timeouts that are very long when the receiving party never replies to any packets.
I immediately looked at my firewall and saw that I have
    ip6tables -P INPUT DROP
in my firewall script at start-up. Since I don't use IPv6, I decided to effectively disable it a year or so ago. I removed this iptables rule and Java applets work again. Furthermore, if I let the applet just sit for about 5 minutes (literally), the applet will run. I guess I never let it sit for that long before, although it did feel like I gave it enough time. So the problem does appear to be an IPv6-related timeout. Good call.
I had this iptables rule above the rule that accepts all connections on the local interface, so it's possible that I simply need to accept all local interface packets (and only drop foreign IPv6 packets) to fix the problem.
I don't know why my interface needs to receive any IPv6 packets for the Java applet to work, but it does. I'll get a packet sniffer out later today and see if I can make better sense out of what is happening.
dschrute: Do have have anything similar in your IPv6 configuration? Possibly another iptables IPv6 rule? I wonder if your problem is also caused by IPv6 not responding.

  • Firefox is hanging and sometimes crashing. It's using 50% CPU

    This is the signature:
    hang | Mozilla::plugins::PPluginInstanceParent::CallPaint(mozilla::plugins::NPRemoteEvent const&, short*)
    Or this one:
    hang | KiFastSystemCallRet
Firefox is often "Not responding" - it seems to be worse when I have websites open with moving adverts on them, such as a news website or Hotmail and its adverts. Sometimes it crashes.
It hangs all the time and all over the place, switching tabs, writing an email, clicking on a link... It's a nightmare.
If I close the websites with the Flash adverts, Firefox drops to using only 1 or 2% CPU and works fine again.
    Please can you help?
    Thanks,
    Zoe.

    Hi,
If it's any help, since posting my problem, I have found out that my Hotmail account had been hijacked by a spammers. The spamming software was probably the cause of all the excessive CPU usage as it worked through my 500+ contacts to create crap emails to send them and spread itself.
I had to change my password and switched to https. I only did this after seeing the massive number of messages sent out which generated a few non-delivery messages.
I don't know if the password change stopped the spammers or if, having totally abused my account, they abandoned it and moved on to somebody else's.
It woud be nice to think that the browser software could have a built-in alarm which sets off if it is using 50% CPU, that is not normal processing power and could quickly shut down the spam activity???
My account and firefox are all back to normal now.
