Captivate 3 to Flash CS3 Problem
Hi
I am trialling v3 and just been trying out the export to
Flash CS3 option which seems problematic - no images seems to be
exported.
On the exporting progress screen I am getting a 508 error -
not supported, Flash CS3 opens and I have some assets but no images
Anyone know how to fix this?
Also is it not possible to export individual slides to Flash?
It would make editting in Flash a whole lot easier than having 1
big timelime.
Thanks
KevinHi Larry
No I am not a Flash developer, just looking for an option to
have a little programmability in Captivate.
I have just spent a few months looking at options for
producing learning apps - desktop or CD/DVD delivery rather than
the web. I had settled on Arthoware but then Adobe announced they
were not going to continue with this anymore. They suggest Flash,
Captivate or Director as alternatives But Flash is great for web,
not great for desktop or CD/DVD (distributing swf files not a good
idea as they are too insecure), Captivate has no programmability
and Director has little or no question/learning objects. So really
no alternative to Arthorware.
My view based on a very quick look at Captivate is that one
way may be to build individual scenes in Flash and then import
these into Captivate slides. No control over program flow or
writing to file, etc though.
I had a feeling integration would be an issue, the
ex-Macromedia products were/are good but all built using different
languages - Flash/Actionscript, Director/Lingo and Arthorware had
yet another language. Hopefully Adobe will copy the guys at
Microsoft and try to re-build the products on the same framework
all using the same programming language, then we may have
consistence and better integration

I've just downloaded this program and i tried to install it.
whenever i try to open the setup.exe, nothing comes up. I don't
know what to do so please helpfirst, open flash without opening a fla. if it opens ok, create a new fla and save it. close flash and reopen the new empty fla and test it.
if that all works ok, open your project fla. save it with a different name. close flash, reopen the renamed project fla and attempt to test it. any problem? -
Hi
Can anyone tell me if Maximize Mode (under Window Worspace)
and Open Documents in Tabs (Preferences) is a Mac only feature. I
am using Windows XP and have been working my way through a
Lynda.com tutorial which refers to these features. The training
video uses a Mac but these options do not appear in my Windows
version.
Not a big issue, I grant you, but it would be helpful to
know.
Thanks

Export to Flash CS3 doesn't work
Hello,
I have Captivate 4 and Flash CS3 (full versions) - WinXP.
When I want export Captivate project to Flash - "File -> Export
-> Project to -> Flash CS3" I will get only notify: "Cannot
initialize Cpativate FLA Exporter. You may need to restart Flash."
Flash CS3 is running and Captivate project is saved. Any idea?
LeošHi Leoš,
I guess you are searching in the wrong place. Its not
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash
CS3\cs\Configuration\Importers
It should be
For XP:
<Windows Drive Letter>:\Documents and Settings\<user
directory>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Flash
CS3\<language>\Configuration\Importers
For Vista:
<Windows Drive Letter>:\Users\<user
directory>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Flash
CS3\<language>\Configuration\Importers
Windows Drive Letter is the drive in which windows is
installed into. Generally it is 'C' (without quotes)
Anyway, I dont think there is support for Czech version of
Flash to export from Captivate. However you can try this out:
Copy RDMFISTUB9.dll into
For XP:
<Windows Drive Letter>:\Documents and Settings\<user
directory>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Flash
CS3\<language>\Configuration\Importers\
For Vista:
<Windows Drive Letter>:\Users\<user
directory>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Flash
CS3\<language>\Configuration\Importers\
(Ex path for dll: For XP, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe
Captivate 4\RDMFISTUB9.dll)
Copy RdJsfl.dll into
For XP:
<Windows Drive Letter>:\Documents and Settings\<user
directory>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Flash
CS3\<language>\Configuration\External Libraries\
For Vista:
<Windows Drive Letter>:\Users\<user
directory>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Flash
CS3\<language>\Configuration\External Libraries\
(Ex path for dll: For XP, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe
Captivate 4\RdJsfl.dll)
Copy AdobeCaptivate Folder inside ActionScript Folder into
For XP:
<Windows Drive Letter>:\Documents and Settings\<user
directory>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Flash
CS3\<language>\Configuration\Classes\
For Vista:
<Windows Drive Letter>:\Users\<user
directory>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Flash
CS3\<language>\Configuration\Classes\
(Ex path for folder: For XP, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe
Captivate 4\ActionScript\AdobeCaptivate)
You can get RDMFISTUB9.dll, RdJsfl.dll in Adobe Captivate 4
installed directory
(Generally this should be C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe
Captivate 4)
Now try to import a cp file into captivate.

I'm working out of Colin Moock's Essential ActionScript 3.0
and I get this message when I try to save my file: "A definition
for the document class could not be found in the classpath, so one
will be automatically generated in the SWF file upon export." The
document class is set to zoo.VirtualZoo
My .fla file sits on the desktop. Also on the desktop, there
is a folder named zoo. Within this folder named zoo there are
several .as files, one of the is named VirtualZoo.as
Even when I try to run the completed file that he provides I
get this same message. I'm running MacOS10.4.11, using Flash CS3,
and have already reset all of my ActionScript settings within my
preferences.
Here's the link to the files:
http://moock.org/eas3/examples/moock_eas3_examples/virtualzoo_Flash_authoring/
Any help would be much appreciated,
JoeI tried it from you're link and it still gave me the same
problem. Do you think that I've changed some setting? Is there a
way to completely reset all the defaults in flash? This sucks.

AIR Intrinsic Classes-Tried and Proven Approach to building AIR applications in the Flash CS3 IDE
Hi everyone,
For all of you out there who would like to develop AIR
applications
from the Flash CS3 IDE but aren't sure how to get those pesky
intrinsic
classes working, I have a technique that you can work with to
create
your classes and make fully functional AIR applications.
First of all, those solutions out there that list
"intrinsic" functions
in their class definitions won't work. That keyword has been
taken out
and simply won't work. The "native" keyword also doesn't work
because
Flash will reject it. The solution is to do dynamic name
resolution at
runtime to get all the classes you need.
Here's a sample class that returns references to the "File",
"FileStream", and "FileMode" classes:
package com.adobe{
import flash.utils.*;
import flash.display.*;
public class AIR extends MovieClip {
public static function get File():Class {
try {
var classRef:*=getDefinitionByName('flash.filesystem.File');
} catch (err:ReferenceError) {
return (null);
}//catch
return (classRef);
}//get File
public static function get FileMode():Class {
try {
var
classRef:*=getDefinitionByName('flash.filesystem.FileMode');
} catch (err:ReferenceError) {
return (null);
}//catch
return (classRef);
}//get FileMode
public static function get FileStream():Class {
try {
var
classRef:*=getDefinitionByName('flash.filesystem.FileStream');
} catch (err:ReferenceError) {
return (null);
}//catch
return (classRef);
}//get FileStream
}//AIR class
}//com.adobe package
I've defined the package as com.adobe but you can call it
whatever you
like. You do, however, need to import "flash.utils.*" because
this
package contains the "getDefinitionByName" method. Here I'm
also
extending the MovieClip class so that I can use the extending
class
(shown next) as the main Document class in the Flash IDE.
Again, this is
entirely up to you. If you have another type of class that
will extend
this one, you can have this one extend Sprite, Math, or
whatever else
you need (or nothing if it's all the same to you).
Now, in the extending class, the Document class of the FLA,
here's the
class that extends and uses it:
package {
import com.adobe.AIR;
public class airtest extends AIR{
public function airtest() {
var field:TextField=new TextField();
field.autoSize='left';
this.addChild(field);
field.text="Fileobject="+File;
}//constructor
}//airtest class
}//package
Here I'm just showing that the class actually exists but not
doing much
with it.
If you run this in the Flash IDE, the text field will show
"File
object=null". This is because in the IDE, there really is no
File
object, it only exists when the SWF is running within the
Integrated
Runtime. However, when you run the SWF as an AIR application
(using the
adl.exe utility that comes with the SDK, for example), the
text field
will now show: "File object=[object File]". Using this
reference, you
can use all of the File methods directly (have a look here
for all of
them:
http://livedocs.adobe.com/labs/flex/3/langref/flash/filesystem/File.html).
For example, you can call:
var appResource:File=File.applicationResourceDirectory;
This particular method is static so you don't need an
instance. If you
do (such as when Flash tells you the property isn't static),
simply
create an instance like this:
var fileInstace:File=new File();
fileInstance.someMethod('abc'); //just an example...read the
reference
for actual function calls
Because the getter function in the AIR class returns a Class
reference,
it allows you to perform all of these actions directly as
though the
File class is part of the built in class structure (which in
the
runtime, it is!).
Using this technique, you can create references to literally
*ALL* of
the AIR classes and use them to build your AIR application.
The beauty
of this technique is its brevity. When you define the class
reference,
all of the methods and properties are automatically
associated with it
so you don't need reams of code to define each and every
item.
There's a bit more that can be done with this AIR class to
make it
friendlier and I'll be extending mine until all the AIR
classes are
available. If anyone's interested, feel free to drop me a
line or drop
by my site at
http://www.baynewmedia.com
where I'll be posting the
completed class. I may also make it into a component if
there's enough
interest. To all of you who knew all this already, I hope I
didn't waste
your time.
Happy coding,
PatrickWow, you're right. The content simply doesn't show up at all.
No
JavaScript or HTML parsing errors, apparently. But no IE7
content.
I'll definitely have to look into that. In the meantime, try
FireFox :)
I'm trying to develop a panel to output AIR applications from
within the
Flash IDE. GSkinner has one but I haven't been able to get it
to work
successfully. Mine has exported an AIR app already so that's
a step in
the right direction but JSFL is a tricky beast, especially
when trying
to integrate it using MMExecute strings.
But, if you can, create AIR applications by hand. I haven't
yet seen an
application that allows you to change every single option
like you can
when you update the application.xml file yourself. Also, it's
a great
fallback skill to have.
Let me know if you need some assistance with AIR exports.
Once you've
done it a couple of times, it becomes pretty straightforward.

Flash breaks randomly, won't compile, ignores document class?
I have run into a strange and annoying problem since updating to Flash Professional CS5.5 on my work computer.
Sometimes, seemingly randomly, Flash stops compiling things correctly. I Test Movie by hitting Cmd+Return and it just displays what's on the stage, frame 1. The document class is never initialized, no errors at all, no trace statements print out; it acts as if there is no code at all. After this happens once, it will continue to do this until I restart Flash, which fixes the problem. However, restarting Flash every 10 - 15 minutes is very annoying.
It seems to happen regardless of what project I'm working on or what state the project is in (i.e. if the code contains errors or not). All of our projects use external AS3 classes (no code on the timeline).
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
I'm using an iMac running OSX 10.6.8.I haven't run into this with CS5.5 yet, but it used to happen to me all the time in CS4. Simply moving the .fla to a different folder (and make sure it publishes to a new folder) solved the problem every time. In CS5.5, prior to the recent update to CS5.5.1, I would also sometimes have my exported swf not reflect changes I made. I fixed that by first saving as xfl, then resaving as fla.

Any help appreciated. This is a great viral marketing tool, when it ever works
Kind Regards,
Boxing BoomNever seen such an error, but if it's in the status bar of the browser then it shouldn't be Flash problem. You can check what's happening in your swf by creating a dynamic text field and setting it's text in every major action, that is: requesting PHP and getting back response, to what's just happened.
So, on the Flash side you can see whether the browser error stops the PHP script and immobilizes further actions.
What I'd do is create a new Flash file and PHP file and just send 1 variable to PHP, change it somehow and send it back to Flash and print it in a text field. That way you can check whether it's the method you're using to request PHP or just PHP or something else. Step by step adding complexity and checking on which of these steps the error occurs.
I wish you good luck.
Ps. It's probably a very rookie problem, we just don't know the source. -
Adding classes to Flash CS3 project
Forgive me I'm a newbie when it comes to Flash projects. I
have the source code for a Flash based media player written in
Action Script 3 that I need to modify. I’m trying to add
classes to this project in Flash CS3 however after I import them
and try to reference the classes in an existing class within the
original source I get the following error when I try to build:
1172: Definition ‘classname’ could not be found.
However the project builds fine if I don’t reference
any of the newly imported classes. What am I missing here?
ScottFrom a brief look you need to import your new package into
existing class:
import alducente.services.*;
Also make sure that you provide a path to this package in
Flash publishing preferences - you need to start with a directory
that one level up. For instance, if your new classes reside in a
path: c:/documents/classes/alducente/services, you need to tell
Flash that you classes are in c:/documents/classes - not in
c:/documents/classes/alducente -
Problem with FLVPlayer in Flash CS3 (need to save out as Actionscript 3.0 SWf file)
I am using Flash CS3 and am trying to publish a SWf file that
makes use of the "FLVPlayback" component. I need for this SWF file
to be published as an Actionscript 3.0 file, so I have set my
publish settings to Flash Player 9.0 and Actionscript 3.0, but keep
getting an error as follows:
"WARNING: The component 'FLVPlayback' requires ActionScript

Has anyone encountered this?? I am doing something wrong? I'm
pretty comfortable within Actionscript/Flash 2.0, but am only
beginning my first steps into the relam of CS3 and AS3.
I have also attached a screenshot of the files that represent
my FLVPlayback component (or so I assume). (see this link for

Gotcha. You must have started the document in AS2, then
changed the
publish settings. Each version of the language has its own
version of the
FLVPlayback Component (written in the relevant language).
Start over and
compare two compleley new FLA documents: make one for AS3 and
one for AS2.
Open the Components panel and note the differences between
the two. There
are a different set of Components depending on the language
chosen for the
document. Drag the FLVPlayback Component from the Components
panel in an
AS3 document, and you'll have the AS3 version.

Adobe Flash CS3 detected a problem and has to be closed.
Hello,
I'm using Flash CS3 for a month, but the problem is that
since a week ago, flash CS3 stops working after 5 minutes of use.
So today I've downloaded the test version (30 days) in
another PC, but even with this other computer the software doesn't
works and has to be closed.
So that's not because of my computer. It's a more general
problem.
Did it happened to one of you? DO you know if flash CS3
doesn't work for everyone right now?
Do you know how to repair this kind of problem? I'm very
desperate and I really need to use flash. I don't know what to do.
Thank you very muchThere could be any number of items causing this. First off is do you have an active internet connection? If so have you tried rebooting you computer?

Problem displaying dynamically loaded text in Flash CS3
I created a Flash CS3 application that does not display
dynamically loaded text (from internal AS3 scripts) on 3/6 of my
client's computers. All computers run IE 6 and Flash Player 9. I
cannot replicate the problem on any computer in my department. The
problem seems to be related to Flash Player 9 or a browser
setting/IT restriction. Has anyone encountered this? If so, have
you found a solution?
If I cannot find a solution, then I will need to almost
completely redo the application.
One slightly insane idea I have considered is to, if
possible, convert dynamically loaded text to an image real-time. Is
that possible?
Btw, I have created a font in my library. Should I try
manually embedding the font from the Properties menu and selecting
all characters?
Thanks in advance.yes, even though you may be using a font from the library,
you still have to specify that each text field that uses that font
embeds the font, and you'll need to select all characters(well not
all, unless you require all the different scripts of the world -
upper-case, lower-case, numerals and punctuation usual suffices).
I bet if you checked, the computers where the font did not
appear did not have the font on their system.
Good luck
