Flash CS4 crashes when publishing .SWF to animated .gifs

I know, I know ... I need to update. Tough crap, it's paid for. Every time I go to publish a .swf file to an animated .gif, I crash. Running CS4 on Windows 7, 64-bit. ANY help would be appreciated! This is a RUSH scenario on a time-sensitive job. Thx!

Hi Cratig84383,
Can you verify if any of your library assets is corrupted?
Thanks,

  • Flash CS4 crashes when publishing big SWF that previously were working fine

    Hi all,
This is driving me crazy, I tried looking into Adobe FAQs and other places inside this site but cant find a good solution to this, in fact I found people asking the same issue. The fact is Im making a game that after being published is 7Mb SWF, this was working great and in fact I havent made any critical change there, only updated a text field with a typo (no code), then when I tried to publish it crashed (other big games I made are making Flash crash too), and crashes the same when hitting CTRL+ENTER or just selecting File>>Publish or File>>Publish settings>>Publish, I reinstalled the whole CS4 6 or 7 times and even got a tool from here to uninstall the player (I thought it uninstalled the player used from IDE but its apparently the browser plugin) asuming the issue could be there but still keeps crashing after I re-install it, oddly small FLA files can be published, I looked into CS5 faqs and I have seen they can set the cache size there but I cant find in CS4, and Im unsure if is due to that but just my guess after all I read about this, could someone help me please? Thanks a lot beforehand, I have been fighting this for 4 days almost sleepless
Im only using as2 code in these projects I meantioned, and I have Windows Vista on this machine, just if this helps to solve it, again, thanks for any clue
Edit: Im unsure if this is the right section or not, please receive my apologies if its wrong place as maybe this is intended for only code doubts but I couldnt find the right section to ask it so please move it to the appropiate place when you can and Im sorry for the trouble

Well my friend, you saved me here =), that final advice you gave was the solution, I followed the steps, deleted the registry keys and deleted the folders with the preferences, then I reinstalled over the damaged Flash Pro version and it worked again!!, I even managed to recover my workspace with the folder I saved before, dont know why I never got a dialog to reset preferences in the middle of this process as you mentioned and as is said in the article, but the important is that it worked, and finally the Flash Pro is able to publish the mentioned as2 projects, takes a bit of time to publish but it was never too fast with bigger projects.
I owe you one, I would like to include a link to your site in the game as a way to thank you for this, but if you feel its wrong or you prefer any other way to show how much I thank you for this please let me know
The link I would like to add can be seen here in the game tittle screen and "About" section

  • Flash CS4 crash when scrolling

    Hi,
Today one of our artists started experiencing a crash in Flash CS4 Professional when scrolling the workspace around in one of his .fla files.  All he has to do is hold down the spacebar and scroll around with the mouse; or use the scrollbars to scroll around.  It has crashed about 10 times in the last hour, and we copied the file over to another machine and saw the crash there as well.  We've only seen it occur with one particular file.
The machines are both Intel Core i7 machines with 8GB of RAM and two different video cards, one running Windows 7 and the other running Vista; and the crashes cause the Adobe "let me report this crash to the mothership" dialog box, so I don't think it's video card driver related; I think it's just a bug in Flash Professional.  We're running version 10.0.2 with no updates available to Flash Professional when choosing "Updates..." from the Help menu.
Anybody else seen this?  Any workarounds?  Any way to get Adobe to fix it?
    Thanks - BD

  • Flash CS6 crashes when publishing fla`s with big libraries

    Hi guys,
I am currently working with Flash CS6 and i noted that the bigger the libraries in my fla`s get the more likely flash will crash when i try to publish these fla`s. It already has gotten to a point where all the crashes, and then trying again to publish, has taken up a considerable amount of my time. But the thing is the publishing does not alway result in a crash, its more like 80% of the time it crashes. Also what i do once a file has crashed, i open it again and then just open and close some folders in the library, then safe and then try to publish again. After doing this 4 - 5 times publishing suddenly works again, but also just 4 - 5 times until it crashes again and i have to do it all over again.
So again, this only seems to happen with fla`s with big libraries. Is ther something i can do about this?

It's been my experience that Flash doesn't much like a few things in particular. One is large vector files with a lot of points; in other words stuff brought in from Illustrator or trace bitmapped from within the program so you might try reducing the amount of points in your art if you'r working with imported art. Flash seems to work best when all art has been created within the program. If you've converted it to vector via the Trace Bitmap or Illustrator's Live Trace it doesn't like that either. It also tends to bog down with high resolution bitmaps, especially with many layers (which greatly add to the file size) so you might try to flatten some of the art to make it more managable. In general, maybe see if you can reduce whatever file sizes you can in your project before you import them. I typically have some pretty big libraries and Flash doesn't crash so much for me so changing your workflow a bit might be useful. IF it's code that's crashing the render, that I can't help you with, but there's some pretty knowledgable people on this board who might be able to help in that regard.

  • Flash CS4 crashing when scrubbing playhead or using certain tools

I am currently having the unfortunate experience of learning Flash Pro as part of my degree program at school. I have been having a problem with the program crashing repeatedly. I have CS4 Web Premium, an educational discount edition, and am using it on an HP pc with an AMD Athlon and Nvidia v-card. I have had problems with it crashing on this computer when using tools such as the deco-tool and sometimes when transforming something. The real problem is when I try to use one of the Dell pc's at school to work on a file I have created at home on the HP. On 4 different machines at school Flash will crash when working on one of these files, especially when scrubbing the playhead on the timeline. The program will crash over and over, to the point where I can't really work on these files at school, which is a huge waste of time. I have heard of problems with corrupt fonts, and restoring preference files but also wanted to see if these problems sound familiar to anyone.

Thanks for your reply. I have the 10.0.2 Flash update on my pc, I'm not sure about the machines at school but I'm guessing they do as well. I also have 6gb of ram, and am running 64bit windows7. The pc's at school are new Dell's running widows7 and I would think they have at least 4gb of ram. I've attached a file that crashed when I scrubbed the playhead on the pc's at school. I don't have that problem at home. Thanks again for your help.

  • Problem with text when publishing as an animated .Gif

I am using Flash CS4 to create a simple 300px250x animated web banner.
Everything works fine when I am in flash and when I export my file as a .swf,
but when I export my movie as an animated .gif, the text becomes a solid box of color...
    any ideas why?
I created the text in flash, then converted it to a symbol...
the animation is a simple scroll and fade in.
Could it be because the text is too small or is there something else?
Really hoping someone can give me some insite into this, thanks!

    Hi,
Try exporting your file with the following settings to get a high quality GIF
    Dimensions   : Match movie
    Playback       : Animated
                        : Loop continuously
    Options         : Optimize colors
                        : Smooth
    Transparent   : Opaque

  • Flash CS4 crashes when exporting to animated .GIF!!!!

I am running Snow Leopard and Flash CS4 10.0.2.  Everytime I try to export to an animated GIF flash will crash.  I can export to .swf, html, and a static .gif just fine.  As soon as I check that animated box and hit publish, it crashes.  This is annoying and ridiculous.  Is this an issue with Flash?
At first I thought it was due to the fact that I was using actionscript for my animation.  I figured the .gif didn't support that so I got rid of it, still crashed.  Even just made a very simple text animation and it still would crash.  This is unacceptable.
Anyone know a good SWF - animated GIF converter in the meantime?

Honestly, I am really astonished that CS4 runs under Windows 8 at all. You should get your hands on a trial version of flash cc and test if you are encountering the same problems:
if yes: then it must be related to your soundsystem (audio drivers/soundcard) or the files you try to import are non-standard/demolished
if no (flas cc imports your files but not CS4) then I would advise moving on to a specialized Windows 8.1 forum

  • Flash 8 crashes when publishing (Mac 10.3.9)

I've searched the forums and haven't found an instance that
is relevant enough to my situation.
Pretty basic, really. I have a registered version of Flash
and I go to publish. Not doing anything crazy with the publish
settings. The document I'm working on isn't immense or overly
    complex, either.
It gets about 1/3 or 1/2 through publishing it, then crashes
(i.e., "The application Flash has unexpectedly quit.").
This is part of the message that my OS sends to Apple...
    "Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0x0e8e8d9e"
    What's all that about?
From what I've read, Flash is a bit buggy (hit & miss)
    with this whole crashing thing.
Anybody have any links or idears on how to get this fixed (or
    at least working better/more reliably)?
I've repaired permissions, run Onyx (i.e., deleted system
cache, etc. etc.), restarted, updated, repaired permissions,
    restarted. . .
    In a pickle...
Can some kind soul help me out? I hate pickles...
    Thanks,
    -j

Well, I talked to Adobe support last night for about an hour
and this is the scoop. Evidently, I was only having problems with
one of my documents. I was able to successfully publish a different
document. I was also able to save it, too. This document, however,
was much simpler than the one I was having problems with.
In my troublesome document, I had imported some .swf
animations that I had exported from ImageReady. I didn't realize
that Flash creates a .swf library symbol,
    and two library instances of
each frame (a bitmap and a movieclip symbol).
I realized that I had many, many duplicates and duplicates of
duplicates. My document had become ridiculously huge (~227MB). I
deleted all those instances, re-imported the .swf file and got my
file size down to about 77MB. I was now able to save my document,
but I still couldn't publish it.
So, the support guy told me to go into "Publish Settings",
click on the "Formats" tab and deselect "HTML". Click the publish
button at the bottom of the dialogue window and presto! It
published (albeit without the HTML file).
That's about where it ended. The support guy couldn't figure
out why this document was crashing Flash when trying to publish
    both the .swf
and .html files. He recommended a work-around of creating
the HTML file in Dreamweaver. I had already been hand-coding the
html file as a work-around, so that's where we left it.
So, this is what I learned:
    1. Repair permissions, run Onyx & clear your system cache
(don't have Onyx for 10.3.x? You can download the
    zip
file. You need admin access. Be careful with it, you can screw
up your computer. Be conservative with the settings. Use at your
    own risk).
if this doesn't solve it, then:
    2. Make sure you're up-to-date on your system software, Flash
software, and Flash player. Repair permissions again after updating
    any software.
if this doesn't solve it, then:
    3. Go to Users > username > Library > Application
Support > Macromedia and rename the Flash 8 folder as "Flash 8
old". Flash will create a new folder when you load it (it's an app
preference folder). You may delete "Flash 8 old" if this solution
doesn't end up really screwing things up (or you can delete it if
it fixes your problem). If this solution does end up creating
problems (or if you had certain settings you just can't lose),
delete the new "Flash 8" folder and rename "Flash 8 old" to "Flash
    8".
If it still doesn't work, re-evaluate your .fla:
    4. Limit the size and complexity of your .fla (delete
    superfuous library instances)
    5. Library instances can become corrupt, leading to a crash
    (delete suspect ones, re-create them)
    6. Fonts can become corrupt, leading to a crash (validate
    your fonts)
    7. Importing .swf files into your .fla file is iffy, due to
different compression(?) settings. This could be the culprit in my
circumstance. I may try doing a loadmovie deal on it at some
point... when I figure out where/when it could be loaded in the
    background.
    7. Publish your .fla without the .html document.
If all else fails and your Flash app just ain't workin', here
are instructions for uninstalling the studio (and it appears,
    individual applications):
    Studio TechNote
    8f101099
    Hope this helps!

  • Flash CS4 Crashing When Compiling AS2

Since I purchased flash CS4 (upgrading from flash 8), I have gradually shifted from writing code in AS2 to AS3. Now all of my projects are in AS3 except 1, it's an old legacy project written in such a way that conversion would be almost impossible.
Earlier today I started to work on it and then tried to compile it causing flash to crash. After about an hour I realised that whenever I compile an AS2 project flash crashed. After trying to download patches, restarting countless times and searching the internet for similar bugs, I uninstalled and reinstalled flash. But to no avail, the bug persisted. So I decided to create an acount and post about the bug I encountered on this form, hoping that somone might know about it.
OS: Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 3 64
    Processor: AMD Athlon 64 bit

By following the suggestions of this url.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/520/cpsid_52048.html
And deleting my preferences located here.
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Flash CS4\
I managed to fix this problem, flash now once again, compiles AS2 files without crashing.

  • Flash CS4 crashes when I select font.

Ok, so this is a new one. Every time I go to choose a font Flash either crashes or stalls.
I haven't added any fonts recently. One thing I did notice is that FontBook suddenly enabled ALL of my fonts.
I went through disabled all but the essentials. Still happens though.
I basically can't use Flash right now if it has anything to do with fonts... which is 90% of the time.
    Any ideas?
I'm on a 2009 Mac Pro with 8 cores, 16gig of ram and am using Snow Leopard.

Make sure you update to Flash 10.0.2 - it may be a performance/memory usage issue on publish of the older files.

  • Flash CS4 crashes when dragging image from library to stage

Everytime I'm trying to drag an image from the library to the stage, the program crashes.
I've been sending the crash logs to Adobe many times, but never got any solution from them.
In the log there a line that says:
    <crash exception="EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" instruction="0x0c4feb66>
I'm working with 10.0.2, I thought the latest update will fix that, but it doesn't.
Changing the UI from Essential to Classic doesn't help (read somewhere it can help).
Anyone knows what to do to stop these crashes?

Yes, did all the updates, both XP and Java.
It looks like it's a library issue. Almost every action I'm doing in the library (drag, copy etc.) causes the Flash to crash.
    What can be the problem?

    Troubleshooting
is often like a detective story: the more clues one has to
    work with, the
more confidently one can begin the chase.
Well, my problem is that the cs3 starting to crash doesn't
really have an explanation for me. but I will put details here.
    > I run vista business 32 bit
    > I didn't have problems until today,using flash cs3 for

    I don't have CS3 installed on Vista, so I'm afraid I can't
    provide any
offhand suggestions. Since you haven't seen problems until
    today, the first
thing that strikes me is: what happened with today's FLA that
    was different
from your previous efforts? Did you import an unusual
    external asset (even
if only unsual for you)? Maybe you imported a corrupted JPG
    or PNG. Maybe
    a bad font?
I did nothing with the fla that started the crash, I imported
some bitmaps and when trying to publish it, it crashed. Also, I
created another fla, imported some random jpgs 2 I believe, tried
to export it to the same folder, and cs3 crashed, saved the fla
with another name garbage.fla No fonts were used
    > Hint:
    > If I save the same .fla in another folder, flash cs3
    doesn't crash

    the root
    > of the folder
Believe me, I'd be asking these "why" questions myself in
    your shoes.
What you're describing doesn't sound like a well known issue,
    so my hunch is
that something is awry with this particular FLA file --
    something not likely
to be easily reproduced. Since you can publish when saving to
    another
folder, I would run with that workaround for the time being.
    After saving
to a different folder, try using File > Save and Compact,
    then move the FLA
back to your original folder and try again. Or ... try File
    > Save As from
the new folder, and save the copy into your original folder.
In your duplicate post, you mentioned starting a thread of
    your own
(this one) but not hearing any responses. Obviously, I can
    only speak for
myself in this reply, but it may be that you didn't get
    responses because
your question is on the vague side. It doesn't describe a
    common issue
(like, for example, "Why can't I mask dynamic text?" [answer,
    "Make sure to
    embed your font outlines"]).
When I read these forums, I tend to skim the subject lines
    looking for
descriptive summaries. Many people post questions like "How
    did they do
this?" or "Help!" or "Flash question" ... none of which
    describe meaningful
topics. In my opinion, your subject line is useful, because
    it briefly
summarizes your question. That's a good thing. When I read
    the actual body
of your post, though, I quickly realized there wasn't enough
    (for me, at
least) to give you a solid answer. In this case, I've tried
    to give you a
few pointers anyway, but I'm only hazarding a few "try this"
    type
    suggestions.
It may be that others who read your post felt equally unable
    to answer
your questions with confidence -- at least, as stated.
Well, I did some research on the internet and there is a
quite more few people having the same problem, here is the other
    forum I found:
    cs3
    flash crash when publishing
I am sorry that I didn't post any more specifications of what
I was doing, but what I was doing was not something different or
unusual of what I have been doing for the last week at least. I was
just working with dw and flash together importing the .swf into an
html and launching the html from dw.

I recently bought the 160gig ipod classic. had ipod 5th gen before. no problem syncing. as soon as I put the new ipod classic in the dock it started playing something I hadn't selected. This happens every time. This never happened with earlier ipod.
