Flash Drive Audio Loss
I suddenly lost audio when viewing a video. I have Flash version 11.3.300.257 & tried their simple suggestions to no avail. Any ideas? Would be appreciated. My video is fine, just the audio quit unexpectedly.
Silent Salesman
That's about right.
The way memory is reported is one reason.

Finder crashes in 10.7.5 with sandisk ultra 16GB flash drive
I have tried using 3 different 16GB SanDisk Ultra flash drives, and all 3 lead to a finder crash. When the drive is first put into a USB slot it will appear to mount and the contents are visible. I then eject the drive and put it back in. At that point I may get the message that the drive was not propoerly ejected, or I may not. Sometimes I have received the same message when I try to eject the drive. Under any circumstance, the finder seems to crash (and is listed as not responding in the force quit application) and it will not restart appropriately.
I do not believe this is a hardware issue because if I boot into BootCamp with Windows 7 running the flash drive can be mounted and unmounted without any difficulty. Further, it can be mounted and unmounted on several PC's that I have tested. I also don't believe this is a formatting issue because the flash drive can be mounted and unmounted successfully in another iMac that is running OS 10.6.8.
I have wondered if this is related to some program running in the background, so I have booted in Safe Mode, but when in Safe MOde the flash drive won't even mount. Lastly, I have reset the PRAM and this hasn't helped.I appreciate your help. Here is the full report:

How do I browse & play .mp3 files from a USB flash drive using Labview 8.0?
I'm a tester & want to test USB flash drives connected to PC.
I want to browse the file system & playback the audio files, .jpeg files etc in the USB drive. I've Labview 8.0. When I searched for some examples or VIs which can detect the USB flash drive, couldn't find any. So if you could point me in the right direction, I can find a solution to my problem.
Thanks.
Solved!
Go to Solution. You probably won't find specific examples for this. A USB flash drive is mounted by the OS and appears as a new memory storage device to all software on the PC, including LabVIEW. You can certainly write a LabVIEW program to open files on the stick and play/run them but I would create a VI that wrote files to the stick and then read them back and checked them for bit-level errors. Keep in mind that your OS might be doing parity checking under the hood which would make your test rather meaningless.
BTW, testing memory by looking at pics or listening to MP3s would be useless of course. A human can't see or hear bit-level errors in a high bandwidth data stream.

How do I put my iTunes library on to a flash drive?
I am about to get a laptop (Dell, not sure which kind, Windows 7) and want to transfer my iTunes library from my old piece of **** desktop (XP) to said laptop. I don't feel like doing it with 10 or 11 cd's (my library takes up about 7.41 GB) and want to know how I can get my library (actual audio files AND song info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) on to a, say 8 GB flash drive to transfer it to the laptop. Thanks.
Right-click any song, locate it, navigate up until you come to the iTunes folder, and move that. This will not transfer iTunes Store authorization or rented movies.

Quicktime .mov is Out of Sync on My Flash Drive
I have a 8GB HD Quicktime .mov file on my desktop that plays perfectly fine. However, every time I transfer that file to my 16GB flash drive and play it back on the flash drive, the movie is about one second OUT OF SYNC. I have tried this three times with the same results. Would appreciate any help anyone could offer. Thanks.
what is in an audio layer? if there's a sound attached, then its sync property must be set to stream if you want the display and sound to sync.
have you changed all your sound's to stream and, if so, has that solved the sync problem. -
I have a strange problem with a USB flash drive which refuses to mount on the desktop of my MDD FW800. It registers in System Profiler but not in Disk Utility. I can't get it to mount using Terminal either. The Terminal screen says it has mounted but it doesn't appear on the desktop and I can't access it. However, if I do a restart with the the drive plugged in, it does mount. If I eject it and then try to plug it in again, it won't mount! Very frustrating.
It works fine on my Powerbook and my Digital Audio so it can't be the drive itself that's the problem. Not quite sure when this started but it may have been after I installed a PCI USB2.0 card (a Ratoc Rex-PCIU3). The card itself works fine with other USB products and I don't have any deep sleep problems with it either. I'm stumped.
Any suggestions anyone?

Click on the desktop then go up to the menu bar and select Finder / Finder Preferences / General and make sure the box's are checked for Hard disk, External disks, etc.. then reconnect the drive. If you still don't see it on the desktop it may have been improperly disconnected from the iMac while mounted, look to see if it show's up in Disk Utilities and the System Profiler on the USB bus. If you are plugging it into the keyboard, try one of the USB ports on the back of the iMac or a powered hub. There also could be a conflict with other USB devices, try ejecting and disconnect things like an iPod, a printer/scanner or camera, then restarting the iMac and connect only the Flash drive.

Itunes to run on flash drive, can it be done?
I would like to load my Itunes and library on a flash drive, is it possible?
You can, but you shouldn't. Flash drives aren't meant for the kind of constant access that having your iTunes library on one would produce. It will make the drive fail more quickly and conclude with possible data loss.
If you really need to run your library from an external location, buy an inexpensive hard drive (and back it up!). For me, the peace of mind would be worth the money. -
Keynote and exporting to/from a USB flash drive
I just made an interesting realization -
I have a keynote presentation that I needed to export as a Quicktime movie. The keynote presentation was saved on my USB flash drive, so I plugged in the drive, opened the file, and attempted to export the quicktime file to the hard drive of my macbook pro - it told me "the disk is full or there is a problem with the file"
So, I copied the presentation file onto the Macbook Pro, ejected the USB drive, and tried again - this time it all worked fine.
Does keynote HAVE to write temporary files to the same root directory as the presentation file or something? The hard drive on the Macbook Pro is not even close to full - but the USB drive wouldn't have had room for the movie. What's going on here? Anyone else have this problem? You may think that's what you saw, but you're almost certainly mistaken. An analagous impossibility: even if your audio speakers had a USB port, and you had an mp3 file on a USB stick, no music would play if you simply plugged the stick into the speaker.
A Keynote presentation in native Keynote format is only presentable by a Mac. If the KN has been converted to a QuickTime film and burned to a CD, it would be playable by pretty much any computer, and also by a CD player (I may be mistaken on this; someone will correct me if I'm wrong). In any case, though, there's got to be something more - a lot more - between the KN file and the projector besides a USB plug before a presentation is presented. -
Fix for iPhone 5 Bluetooth audio loss / disconnect?
I recently upgraded from an iPhone 4s to an iPhone 5. I have a Motorola HX550 Bluetooth Headset which worked flawlessly with the iPhone 4s. However, since upgrading to the iPhone 5, I frequently lose audio when in the middle of a call. I am not certain whether it is a full disconnect or just an audio loss. The person on the other end reports still being able to hear me, however, I suppose they could hear me speaking over another source even if bluetooth disconnected. The loss of audio is always preceded by a quick shrill noise, so I can easily tell when it happens. All I have to do to fix the problem is to select Audio Source on the call screen, temporarily switch audio back to the iPhone, and then switch back to the headset, and then it starts working again.
Is is important to note that I am not the only one experiencing this issue:
This is a link to someone using the Motorola H19txt headset experiencing the same issue
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/94ac15ad7c
If you go to the Plantronics website and look at the "Ratings and Reviews" on the Voyager Legend you will see the same issue reported:
http://www.plantronics.com/us/product/voyager-legend (next paragraph is taken from the review since there is no direct link to the review.
Really nice Headset unless you own an Iphone 5. I own several Plantronics headsets and have always loved the quality/ performance. This headset seems not to be compatible with the new Iphone 5. In the middle of a conversation it will lose all incoming audio. This leaves you trying to switch audio sources really fast in order not to lose your phone call. Ive tried 3 legend headsets and they all do the same thing. Hopefully this gets fixed soon because the headset is really nice
Since this issue appears to affect multiple headsets from multiple vendors, I think it is fair to conclude that it is an issue with the iPhone5 bluetooth itself.
I am posting this as a new discussion as I don't see any other posts specific to this iPhone 5 Bluetooth issue. I would have reported this as a problem to Apple, but don't seem to be able to find a way to do this on the web. Hopefully they are already aware, but if not, maybe they will see i here.
If anyone else has experienced this issue, or has recommendations on how to prevent this from happening, I would appreciate your feedback / additions to this post.I upgraded to an iPhone 5 last year, and since that time I have had the audio drop out problem at intermittent but bothersome rates. Interestingly, the audio drop occurs only with some Bluetooth headsets, and never with others. The headsets that have the problem are all over the head devices with strong noise suppression and very long battery life. The problem started with the Parrott XT250+, 20 hours talk time and fantastic noise suppression.
I then purchased the RK400 RoadKing, it has 30 hours talk time, and is a little lighter and less geeky looking.
Also superb, but it cuts out more often than the BlueParrot.
However, I have a Bose in ear Bluetooth which never loses audio.
These heavy duty Bluetooth headsets are popular with truckers. They indicate greater distance to/from the device, about double. 60 feet vs. 30 feet, as I recall.
There must be a Bluetooth standard they adhere to that causes the audio loss problem in the iPhone. Just clicking to iPhone and back to the bluetooth will clear it. I also sometimes have a funny noise that indicates the audio is out, but usually it's noticing the other person not speaking. It has caused some serious problems on important business calls. I bought these headsets, and the iPhone5, to handle these calls.
Apple's Genius bar folks do not appear to have heard of this problem. I was asked to demonstrate it, which i did, eventually I was given a brand new iPhone5 to address the problem. The results of that were interesting, the rate of drop about doubled on the new phone over the old.
I was told when the phone was replaced, and again when I went back, that I would probably have to erase everything on the iPhone, set it up as a new phone on iTunes on my computer, and reload whatever apps I wanted (Apple knows which you paid for). I went through this procedure. I didn't suspect it would work, but I tried it. It didn't work. And again, the frequency of the drop out varied. This leads me to believe it may be some odd memory or cache overload since different phone utilization of space seems to be an affecting variable.
That is, I had all but 8 gigs utilized on my 32 gig iPhone 5 when the problem began. When I had the phone replaced and backed up, I trimmed back some of the apps. When I wiped the phone's drive and reinstalled, I wouud up with more memory available, as I deleted 1000 photographs during the reinstall.
It's frustrating, but I have encountered such weird anomalies in the past. I am glad this forum exists to document the problem and hope Apple will notice, acquire a few of the problem headsets, and resolve the bug. -
Need help getting playlist into flash drive
Hi friends ... so sorry to bother ... but I need some help ... my iPod Shuffle isn't compatible with my new cars audio system .... so I just bought my first usb flash drive (sandisk 8gig) ...I inserted the flash drive and it mounted right away on the desktop ... I just dragged all of the albums I wanted from my iTunes library to the flash drive icon .... I double clicked the flash icon and all the songs and every artist that I dragged into it showed up .... I inserted the flash into my car's usb port- and it played wonderfullyu... until I clicked on the menu and saw that instead of the 900 or so songs I dragged into the flash drive- only about 18 showed up in the audio systems menu ... only about 5 artists instead of the 30 or 40 that I loaded .... the flash drive is 8gig capacity and my entire library is only about 5 gigs .... I emptied all of the mpg's from my flash drive- threw out the trash ... and re-loaded everything again .... once again, when the transfer was finished , everything I dragged into the flash icon was there- every tune played as it shoud when clicked within the desk-mounted flash drive .... but when I inserted again into my cars usb port- once again only a fraction of what was on the flash drive showed up on my screen ...
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong ...The flash drive never appeared in my iTunes window anywhere and under "devices" there was no option highlighted- maybe this is a clue to what I haven't done right? this was the first time I ever used a usb flash drive..I didn't format or anything else -when the flash icon showed up on my desktop - I just intuitively dragged my playlist into the icon - everything appeared to be in there ... but didn't end up in my car's audio system .... please advise .... please advise as simply as possible .... much thanks in advance ....
DavidDavid,
Ther flash drive will not be a recognized Device to iTunes. It will simply be another drive. You can add files to it by drag-n-drop, as you correctly did.
Most likely, you have many files in AAC audio format, and your car player is one of the many that can play MP3, but not AAC.
If you need to convert any formats, consult this document:

Using a flash drive for data storage - questions
I take video clips whenever I travel and when creating DVD videos, want to intermix the clips with still images. Over a long trip, so many videl clips are created that it is required to download these to free up space in the camcorder. For me, a flash drive (or pen drive) is an ideal medium. However, I have found that even with a "fast" drive having a spec of 20MB/sec read and 18MB/sec write, the data transfer slows significantly when the transfer is of either video (.AVI) or music (.mp3).
For example, I have a Sony flash drive with the above specs. Transferring straight data files such as word or spreadsheet documents, I measure the speed at approximately 12MB/sec. But, when I transfer video or audio, this drops to about 4MB/sec.
When I look up transfer rates on the net, it gives one figure specifying this as "data transfer". I could find nothing to indicate the change, if any, in this rate if video or audio files are transferred.
Does anyone have experience with this? Basically, I am trying to find the fastest 2 GB minimum flash drive at a reasonable price, but will I lose all of the speed as a function of the type of file.
ThanksYes, if these are normal data files and the flash drive is formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32.

Need opinions: Flash Drive Vs. Diskettes.
I can't backup on CD's because I have to erase the entire CD-RW to rewrite on it. That means when to backup a few files: I have to put an entire CD contents on my desktop, replace the new files, erase the CD, store the desktop files back to the CD, trash the desktop files.
I needed a system where I can just "drag and drop" a new file to the backup device and it will copy over one file at a time. So I've been using flash drives because it's just too clumsy using the external diskette drive. And it works nicely EXCEPT:
Filing those little flashdrive bugs is just way harder than marking and filing the flat diskettes.
I STILL think Apple should have continued putting diskette drives in Mac for a few years more. You?
j.Hi, j.
it was easier to label and file those nice flat little square diskettes than these tiny plastic spaceships. Am I right?
Yes.
But newer media takes up so much less space... even a single Zip100 = 70 floppies; that's a half-drawer of floppies on one disk. A handful of Zip250 disks can replace an entire cabinet of floppies.
We don't get something for nothing. Today's files, with the current capabilities of color depth, text styling, embedded graphics and (if needed) fonts, plus the machines' capabilities of handling large files with ease, have routinely become so large that often a floppy is not large enough to hold more than a single file, if that.
And, with the advent of affordable software to create audio and video compositions as well as complex graphics files, file storage needs have mushroomed well past the limitations of floppies.
It would not surprise me if CD and DVD file storage has surpassed the use of other media. DVD-RAM disks in particular can be useful in that they behave like a large floppy - individual files can be copied to them or removed from them.
I like firewire hard drives - easy, simple, highly transportable, and safe for the data. -
Really Need To Eject Flash Drive Before Taking Out?
Hi,
On a PC, you can just pull a USB Flash Drive out of a USB port, without any problems. If you do this on a Mac, it warns you of data corruption, and suggests you eject it first. But, do you REALLY need to eject via software on a Mac? Isn't it just a precaution?I'm sorry we keep going back and forth on this. I don't know where you are getting this erroneous information from that "without a full eject first the drive may still be vulnerable."
It's really very simple. By default, the OS tries to optimize performance by delaying any requests to write data to slow devices by pooling together multiple write operations into a cache and then performing all the write operations at once (flushing the cache) when the OS determines that it has some idle time to do so. When you eject or "Safely Remove..." the device, the OS forces a cache flush command, thus immediately performing any write operations it may have not done yet. When it is done emptying the cache it displays a message that it is now safe to disconnect the device.
If you select the Fast Removal feature in the device manager, the write cache is disabled, so all data is written to the drive immediately and no cache flush is necessary. If you issue a "Safely Remove..." for a drive that has the Fast Removal option enabled, Windows simply ignores your request because there is no cache to flush. It simply skips the flush operation and immediately displays the message saying that it is now safe to disconnect the device.
There is always the possibility for data loss (especially if you do something silly like yanking the drive out while it's being written to), but if you have the Fast Removal feature enabled, ejecting or doing a "Safely Remove..." does absolutely nothing magical that will make the drive less vulnerable. Of course, there is no harm done in ejecting a Fast Removal device because your request is ignored; but if the placebo effect makes you feel you are somehow less likely to have data loss, by all means go ahead and do it.
Again, this is only for Windows. OS X does not have a Fast Removal option available from its GUI. -
Unmounting USB flash drive from cRIO
Hi all,
I am using the USB port of a cRIO 9012 to save datafiles (using File I/O) to a USB flash drive.
After having run the program, I want to unmount the USB drive. Can anyone please tell me if there is a better/nicer way than just taking it out? Since this might result into losing my data if the USB drive gets corrupt (just like under Windows).
I have searched the forums, but I was not able to find anything on dismounting a USB drive on a cRIO...
Hopefully you can help me solving this (little) problem.
Thanks in advance,
JoepJoep,
under Windows there are two scenarios that could cause data corruption on a USB-Flash-Drive:
The Flash-Drive is removed during a write operation. This potentially destroys the FAT which results in data loss. There is not much that you can do against this behavior, neither on Windows, nor under VxWorks.
With caching enabled for the Flash-Drive there is a chance that files are not written to the drive completely because some parts of it are still sitting in the PC's memory. When the drive gets removed the data is corrupt.
I don't think that VxWorks uses cache for mass storage devices at all so this issue shouldn't be relevant for a cRIO-9012, but I will double check if this is true.
Best regards,
Jochen Klier
