Flash Drive locked folder

Hi all ,
I recently bought a 4Gig flash drive to use as a very large spare HD on my Mac . I'm an image collector/history buff and all the images I have collected are starting to slow my comp down a bit so I started transferring them into my new Flash drive to get them off my HD . When I bought this particular drive it had advertised a few built in cheese apps meant for windows that I had no interest in , but the price was right . At the time i didn't care because I knew my mac wouldn't read them anyway , and they did not even show up at all . I then happily started my transfers , I got a few of the usual file char errors but thought nothing of it . When all was said and done , all my images were gone from the folder I created ! Not only that , the folder is now locked and I cant unlock it and trash it ! any Ideas?

Are you talking about the original folder on your computer or the folder that was created on the flash drive? I will assume the latter.
Flash drives usually come formatted for PC machines, in FAT format. If you are using this drive exclusively with your Mac you might want to partition and format it for Mac use. I haven't had any real problems using a PC format drive with Macs but there are some file limitations and it makes life easier just to use Mac format (HFS extended) if that's all you need.

Why is my external hd & flash drive locking up when transfering .m4a?
I recently upgraded my software to 10.6.3 on my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. When I transfer movie files specifically to my USB flash drive and external hard drives, they now cause my imac to freeze. If the file size is larger than 500K I experience this problem.
    What is the issue?

They are formated as MS-DOS Fat

  • File transfer via flash drive locks MacBook

Switched from a PC laptop recently to a MacBook. After the usual growing pains, still have a problem occasionally in transferring large files (folders of IT documentation and some are 300-500MB) via my Cruzer 1GB flash drive. Some transfer fine, while others lock up the machine before the transfer is complete. After recovering, can transfer the file again and it may work OK. Any ideas would be appreciated.

My friend, I believe you're right on. I may be speaking too soon but I tried my Verbatim flash drive and transferred three rather large files with no problems whatsoever. Hopefully the problem is solved. I was glad to see someone else was having the same problem. I was about to dump this MacBook. The transferring of files is important to my work and I haven't got time to fool with the problem. Thanks again.

  • Help!  Flash drive worries...

While on my macbook I dragged several files from a flash drive folder to the trash can.  I then ejected the flash drive and gave it to a coworker.  I am very concerned they will be able to see my "deleted" files if they plug the drive into a PC because I did not manually empty the trash while the flash drive was inserted.

I'm afraid that is a possibility.  The files may still be in the flash drives trash folder.

  • Can you "lock" a flash drive so that it can't be written to - on XP too?

    Hello!
I've got a 2 GB flash drive full of music, numbered and in playlist order, which I like to use with the school lab computers when I don't have my Powerbook or iPod with me. The lab computers run both Windows XP (mostly) and Mac OS X 10.4.X Tiger. I'd like to be able to lock this flash drive, so that it can't be written to when attached to another computer (without a password, at least). iTunes (on the lab machines) will play music from this flash drive, but if I should accidentally delete a song, or have it "keep the iTunes folder organized" - it will rename all of the playlists or delete the song files. This is annoying.
My first thought was to make a .dmg image/volume on the drive via Disk Utility, but that won't work with windows machines. Is there any way to lock this flash drive? It does not have a hardware lock feature. If possible, i'd also like it to work with OS 9.2.2 - but this is most definately not required.
    Thanks,
    -Daniel

Without a hardware lock I dont think there is a way to lock the drive cross-platform. You can lock all the files on the drive, which will prevent them from being modified, but that's only a superficial lock, as the "lock" checkbox can be edited in both windows and OS X.

  • Flash drive unlocked, contents locked

    Hi Apple people,
I have a 16GB Rugged key from LaCie is acting up, first everything on it was corrupted and i get getting an error code 1407, so i had to reformate the drive.  Now that the drive has been reformated, i've put some files on the drive as a test and then dragged the files to trash. I get a Message that i don't have permission to access the Items. The Drive is unlocked but yet the contents are lock. So what should i do?? reformate or something else??

  • How do I download photos onto a flash drive in the order they appear in my iPhoto folder?

How do I burn/copy photos onto a flash drive and keep the photos in the same order they appear in iPhoto folder?  I have iphoto'11  9.1.3

There are two ways. First put them in the order you want in an album.
    Method 1:
1 - rename the album the photos are in to something that will work as a file name for the photos.
2 - export photos to a folder on the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export
menu option with File Name = Album Name with number.
    Method 2:
1 - select the photos in the album and use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to Text
menu option to rename the photos and add a sequential number to the end of the file name.
2 - export photos to a folder on the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export
menu option with the option File Name use Title

  • Boots to flashing question mark folder and disc utility cannot locate internal hard drive

Bottling my MacBook Pro I end up with a flashing question mark folder. I reboot holding the option key to select discs and there were no options at all. I plug in an Ethernet cable and it shows a internet recovery option. I click and it downloaded a temporary recovery mode. From there I open disc utility but it doesn't find any internal hard drives. I reset the pram and I still get the flashing question mark folder. Thinking it was my internal hard drive that failed I bought and replaced the internal hd with a new one and repeated all the processes and still no internal hard drive was found. I'm stuck with the flashing question mark folder. Therefore I've concluded that it was my MacBook pros internal hard drive CABLE that had failed. Does anyone know of any other possible problems that is causing this for my MacBook Pro or know of any solutions? Or is replacing my internal hd cable the only solution? Please help!

It was the internal HD cable. I replaced it and now my MacBook Pro works

  • Macbook pro flashing question mark folder, won't recognize hard drive

My 2010 macbook pro froze and after restarting I was greeted with a flashing question mark folder. I then restarted again and held down "option" key and went into Mac OS X utilities then into disk utilities. In disk utilities, my only drive options are "superdrive" "disk0" and a subfolder of "disk0" labeled "Mac OS x Base system". My hard drive is no where to be seen. I also tried to install a new hard drive but the same thing happened, the computer could not recognize that there was a hard drive present. What can I do to fix this??

    Hi bigdubee,
The exact same thing happened to my 2010 MacBook Pro today.  Restarting with the "option" key held down, I get only 2 of the 3 options you listed in disk utilities ("disk0" and a subfolder of "disk0" labeled "Mac OS x Base system".
Did you take your Macbook Pro to the Apple store?  And were they able to fix it?

  • Flashing question mark folder at start, broken CD drive, warranty Q's.

    Hello! Thanks for reading.
Okay, so here's the background: I was just chilling around the house yesterday with my macbook, and it freezes, with no response from the touchpad or keyboard. I figure no problem, and just turn it off and on again. And then thats when I got the flashing question mark folder.
So I hopped on my family's PC to do some research, hoping to be able to fix it myself. Turns out the best way to fix it is to pop in the disk that came with the computer during start up... which I can't do because my disk drive is broken. I also tried other things, like pressing various keys (ctrl + option + p + r, or something like that)... and that didn't work.
The disk drive broke when I was at school, and as it was finals week, I had no time to get my computer to a genius bar. Then I moved quite a distance (see below), a process which has taken up most of my summer and made me quite busy to the point it has taken my macbook pretty much dying on me to get it to a genius bar. Gah.
So I guess I have a lot of questions now.
My computer is JUST a year old, by give or take a week or two.
I bought my computer from an authorized U.S. reseller in Japan while I was living there (I live in the US now, which I definitely wasn't expecting a year ago)... and no contact from apple came to buy apple care. Is it possible that because of the circumstance under which I bought my computer, that apple may still cover any repair or replacement fees under the warranty?
Also, I made an appointment at the local genius bar. Will that be free?
Also, does anybody have any other suggestions about how to get my computer up and running away from the **** that is the question mark folder?
Much thanks! I appreciate your time.

You made 2 big mistakes. 1) Apple may or may not contact you about AppleCare (sometimes I've gotten a postcard or email and other times I've not) but it is up to you to buy it before the 1 year mark. 2) whether it was convenient to get the computer repaired at the time or not, you should have contacted Apple to get the issue in the computer. If you didn't, Apple has no reason to believe it happened after the warranty ended.
You are going to foot the bill for the repairs

  • Toshiba 32GB Flash Drive and lock software for Ubuntu

Got myself a 32GB Toshiba Usb Flash Drive which comes with lock software. Works fine in Vista but if I stick it in my Ubuntu driven desktop, the files on the drive can be accessed or copied or deleted, so the software what comes with the drive is pretty useless as security.
    Any suggestions please?

    Hi Gumnut,
What Toshiba flash drive you have exactly because there are different models on the market? Im not owner of such flash drive but as far as I know Toshiba doesnt support Linux so this software will not run on Linux so the drive isnt locked.
You can also contact Toshiba directly. I found an e-mail address on Toshiba memory product page:

Just write an email and you can get an official answer! :)

  • I want to move pic's in a folder from iPhoto to a flash drive. Everything I've tried allows me to "copy" the contents of the folder, but when I access the flash drive it does not allow me to "paste".  What do I do??

I want to move pic's in a folder from iPhoto to a flash drive. Everything I've tried allows me to "copy" the folder but no "paste" to the flash drive.  What do I do?  What am I doing wrong??

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your USB drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write on disks with NTFS. To fix this:
    1. Use an app like Paragon NTFS.
    2. Format the USB drive in another filesystem like "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", "MS-DOS (FAT)" or "exFAT" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make a backup of your files on the external disk.
After doing that, you will be able to copy your photos to the external disk. Note that you can also use the Export feature in iPhoto to get more export options

  • My turn to post a question, USB Flash drive hard lock issues

So not sure if anyone here will be able to help me. Maybe someone from GS has run into this issue, or someone with tech experience can help. The following is from my post on another forum:
This issue has really been bugging me. For the last year I've been having an issue with every version of Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7). When I insert a flash drive the system will work just fine. When I move a single large file to a flash drive it'll work fine, when I move small files or read small files from a flash drive my entire system hard locks.
Everything freezes, I hit reset, it asks if I want safe mode, then back to the desktop. There are no errors in the error logs. Reliability monitor doesn't show any related issues.
Being of a technological nature I booted into Ubuntu. Everything works perfectly. Put the drive on my hackbook, and everything worked perfectly. OS X, worked perfectly. Tried it on my girlfriend's Vista laptop, worked perfectly.
This issue happens with anything that is detected as a portable storage. It happens with my memory card reader, my flash drives (sandisk, pny, kingston and sony) as well as with my sandisk sansa and iriver mp3 players, but when I set those up as MTP devices they work perfectly.
I have enabled and disabled legacy USB support, re-installed with slipstreamed SP1, xp sp3, vista ultimate without sp1, and the most recent beta of windows 7. Every time I figured it was related to some other USB device, but it's not. Last night I reloaded Vista (without a service pack) and before I installed anything I put a flash drive in and tried transferring some files to it. Hard lock, no other USB devices plugged in, let alone installed.
    Specs:
    AMD Athlon 6400+
    MSI K9A Platinum
    2GB Corsair XMS2
    9600 GSO 512MB
This is a major inconvience. Putting files on a flash drive should be the easiest thing in the world, not something that should force me into a different OS. Please help!

    You're welcome.
According to MSI's website, there are multiple ways to flash the BIOS.  Here are the links to their documents on the alternatives.
How to flash the BIOS CD
How to flash the BIOS Flash Drive
How to upgrade BIOS using MSI LiveUpdate Utility
This page shows all of the BIOS updates available for download for the K9A Platinum.  Probably best to go with the latest release.
I don't have any MSI products but it looks like LiveUpdate might be the easiest since it works from inside the operating system.  If that will not work for you then I would use CD.  They're easy to make bootable following the guide above.
    Hope this helps you.
