Flash drive only "pretends" to eject - help!

I am trying to transfer data from a Power Mac G5 running OS 10.3.9 to a 4 GB USB flash drive. After finishing the copying procedures, I attempt to eject the drive by dragging it to the trash bin, clicking the eject button within a finder window, or using the "eject" option from a pull-down menu, etc. The drive icon disappears from my desktop, but somehow it has not "finished" ejecting, for when I pull out the drive, I get the error message about not having ejected properly. I've tried this multiple times, even waiting for several hours for the ejection process to "finish," and each time have ended up with at least 1/2 my files on the flash drive being corrupted and useless.
I have a large amount of data to transfer, since I'm trying to get it transferred from an old work/school computer to a personal computer at my new workplace. Thus, for efficiency's sake I cannot spend days/weeks transferring these data in smaller bits and it's not worth trying to go through the hundreds of different files to check each and every one to see if it's been corrupted!
Any suggestions? Thank you!!

Thanks for your help so far, BDAqua, Squirrel2 and Japamac.
The only Mac I'm working with is actually this one here at school - the other computers at home and my new workplace are PCs running Windows XP and 7, so I guess reformatting the flash drive in HFS+ is out. The ultimate place I'd like to get the data stored is an external hard drive, but it of course has an NTFS filesystem, which a Mac can't write to... and the work-around I found (NTFS-3G for Mac OS X plus MacFuse) only works with 10.4 and up.
When copying using the flash drive, I've always been connecting it to the direct ports on the towers (whether the G5 or my PC)
We can't upgrade the OS due to software incompatibility/price issues, so I'm kind of stuck with it - argh! To add to that, I'm wary of running troubleshooting or drive maintenance on the G5 right now since it contains data and programs belonging to a number of other people, and it's not feasible just now to run the risk of letting it go out of commission, even for a day (it's thesis-writing season!). That said, I'd be willing to bet a good bit of money that the G5's hard drive is not in "good health," so I'm just going to try burning my data to a DVD so I can be done with this machine once and for all! I've had some issues in the past with writing DVDs on this G5, but it appears to be my last chance unless I'm willing to wait a while.
A friend of mine suggested using Dropbox, which I was very gleeful about until finding out that Dropbox only works on 10.4 and up, as well!
Anyway, thanks again for all of your help and suggestions!

  • HT5172 Glad to have USB capability on my new iMac.  Been in Mac world all of 2 days now.  Question - I downloaded photos from a Centron flash drive and am wondering if flash drives have to be ejected the same as on a PC?  Can't find how to do it.  Thanks.

Been in the iMac world now all of 2 days.  I'm glad to have USB capability.  I downloaded photos from a Centron flash drive and now need to remove the flash drive.  Do you eject flash drives on iMacs as we did on PC's?  Can't find an answer in the support area.  Thanks...

Yes. All external drives regardless of how they are connected must be ejected before they can be unplugged.

  • Flash drive only mounts when connected through USB hub

I have a PNY 32gb USB 2.0 flash drive, when trying to connect the drive directly to my Mid 2012 MBP (specs attached) the drive never mounts, doesn't list in diskutil as an unmounted drive either, however when I plug the drive into a Micro Innovations USB Hub (old ~ 2002) the drive mounts (albeit slowly).
On my iMac (Mid 2010 I7) the drive works perfectly in the machine or through Apple USB Keyboard.
    Any help?

Is that the only USB drive that doesn't work with your MBP ?
    Everything else works fine?

  • Using iPod as a flash drive between PC and Mac help!

    Hey guys,
I have no idea how can I make my iPod a flash drive. Well, it was fine when my school used G4 iMacs last week. But now it's all HP pcs. And I cannot transfer my files to those computers anymore. When I plug my iPod via USB to one of them computer, it says that I will need to format the disk drive (iPod) because it cannot read the file system.
I guess it is because of my iPod is always connected to Macs (including mine) so that the file format on the iPod is unreadable to PCs. So I have no idea what to do because I am scared of that PC is going to ruin my iPod hard drive and its OS. I tried plugging it to a PC at my house, same thing happened. I am too scared to try.
Do you guys have any idea?
    Thank you in advance,
    Ton

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.
If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.

  • USB Flash Drive issues, FAT and Windows, Help!

    Here's the deal:
I have a flash drive, I formatted it in FAT because it needs to be used on my Mac (Snow Leopard) and Windows. When I format it, it adds 2 or 3 other partitions like 200MB. BUT does not show it in Disk Manager or in Finder. I can read and write to the drive on my Mac, and it works (Mac thinks it's FAT). When I go to Windows it says it needs to be formatted. So after a leg-breaking experience in XP to reformat it as FAT, I can't just drag and drop folders into it. If I drag a folder to it it gives me an error code -36. HOWEVER, I can make a new folder on the drive (CommandShiftN) and drag files into the new folder. What the heck? Never had these issues in Leopard. What is the issue? Is this just Snow Leopard or is something screwed and I need to reinstall? Help. Thanks in advance.

    1) Open Disk Utility.
    2) Click your flash drive.
    3) Click "Partition" tab.
    4) Change "Volume Scheme" drop down box to 1 partition.
    5) Change format to FAT.
    6) Click "Options" button.
    7) Change partition table from GUID to Master Boot Record.
    8) Click Apply.
    All done.

  • Can I move only my iTunes movies, not my iTunes music, onto a flash drive? And, is there a program (apart from iTunes) that can play movies on MacBook Air?

I have a MacBook Air and I need to free up space...
    1) I have three series of a tv show on my itunes which are taking up loads of memory - see image - I want to move these movie files onto a Flash Drive. However I do not want to move my itunes Music onto the flash drive, only my Movies, and want to keep my music on my hard drive.
    Is this possible?
    2) I have managed to copy the movie files onto the flash drive, however when I tried to play one to check that they were loaded properly it didn't have a program that could run the file (they have copied over in a m4V format). Do the MacBook Air's not have a separate program other than itunes that can play movies? If so, is there a program I can get to solve this problem? I went onto the App Store to see if there was something I could download, but all the apps were for creating DVD's, not simply playing them.
    3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?
Thank you so much for any answers posted.

If you can play the movies in iTunes, you should be able to open the movie files using Quicktime, which should already be on your system.  If you have already transferred the files to your flash drive, open the flash drive in Finder, and hold control when you click on the movie file (or right click if you have the enabled) and select Open With Quicktime Player.  This should play the movie directly from the flash drive.
If you want to set all .m4v files to open with Quicktime by just double clicking on the file, you can follow the steps here: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2573/os_x_how_to_change_default_application_to_op en_file_type/
    3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?
You can move the TV shows to your flash drive by dragging them from the iTunes window to your flash drive in Finder or the flash drive icon on the desktop.  When you are sure everything is transferred over to your external device, you can delete the movie from iTunes.  I recommend playing the videos from the flash drive first before deleting them in iTunes.
To delete the videos from iTunes, you can highlight them and press the delete key on your keyboard.  In the next prompt, you would want to move it to the trash so that it is deleted from your internal hard drive.
    I hope that helps!

  • Flash drive help PLEASE

i have a 1gb godisk flash drive and for some reason it has made two disk images. it use to be where one of the images was the actual flash drive memory and the other for some reason was named "no name" and only had the size of 1.4mb. well yesterday the real memory disappeared and the only one that is left is the 1.4mb. if i try to restore it thats all it sees.
so what do i do. is the flash drive trash now?
    PLEASE HELP.

    Hi Josh
In Disk Utility select the flash drive and instead of Restore click Erase to reformat the volume. I would suggest MS-DOS if you ever wanted to use it on Windows.
    Hope that helps

  • Need help getting playlist into flash drive

Hi friends ... so sorry to bother ... but I need some help ... my iPod Shuffle isn't compatible with my new cars audio system .... so I just bought my first usb flash drive (sandisk 8gig)  ...I inserted the flash drive and it mounted right away on the desktop ...  I just dragged all of the albums I wanted from my iTunes library to the flash drive icon .... I double clicked the flash icon and all the songs and every artist that I dragged into it showed up .... I inserted the flash into my car's usb port- and it played wonderfullyu... until I clicked on the menu and saw that instead of the 900 or so songs I dragged into the flash drive- only about 18 showed up in the audio systems menu ... only about 5 artists instead of the 30 or 40 that I loaded .... the flash drive is 8gig capacity and my entire library is only about 5 gigs .... I emptied all of the mpg's from my flash drive- threw out the trash ... and re-loaded everything again .... once again, when the transfer was finished , everything I dragged into the flash icon was there- every tune played as it shoud when clicked within the desk-mounted flash drive .... but when I inserted again into my cars usb port- once again only a fraction of what was on the flash drive showed up on my screen ...
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong ...The flash drive never appeared in my iTunes window anywhere and under "devices" there was no option highlighted- maybe this is a clue to what I haven't done right?  this was the first time I ever used a usb flash drive..I didn't format or anything else -when the flash icon showed up on my desktop - I just intuitively dragged my playlist into the icon - everything appeared to be in there ... but didn't end up in my car's audio system .... please advise .... please advise as simply as possible .... much thanks in advance ....
    David

    David,
Ther flash drive will not be a recognized Device to iTunes.  It will simply be another drive.  You can add files to it by drag-n-drop, as you correctly did.
Most likely, you have many files in AAC audio format, and your car player is one of the many that can play MP3, but not AAC.
If you need to convert any formats, consult this document:

  • Finder closes everytime I eject a flash drive

    Hi,
I like to leave Finder open on my desktop. Every time I eject a flash drive Finder is closing. I cannot find anything to change in Finder preferences to stop this. Any ideas appreciated.

Is the Finder window displaying the contents of the flash drive? If so, ejecting it will close the window.

  • HT203167 My brother-in-law tried to transfer all of my I Tunes music to a flash drive, as a back-up for me.  It seem that he lost all my music, and now, I'm afraid to plug in my I Pod, for fear I'll lose that too.  Now what?

My brother-in-law tried to back up my music on a flash drive.  It now appears as though I don't have an I Tunes account.  Worse yet, the flash drive only contains all the artists for the alphabet "A"!  Can someone PLEASE help me?

  • Burning cd's or flash drive

How do I download tv series or movies from my itunes to DVD or Flashdrive ??

Open the Finder window for your blank disk or drive. Open the iTunes window next to it. Drag the TV show/movie into the Finder window. For a flash drive, you can just eject it; for a DVD, ejecting will burn it. Note that you're creating a data disk, ie, the movies can only be read on another authorized Mac/PC through iTunes or Quicktime Player. It remains copy-protected. You're not burning a video DVD that you can watch on a regular set-top player.

  • Loading photos from a flash drive into my Catalog

I am a "neophyte" Photoshop Elements 10 user.  I installed over 14,000 original digital photos from CDs and DVDs into my Catalog without any problems.  My wife copied some very old (scanned) family photos (black & white, pre-1930) onto a flash drive and I then downloaded them into the Catalog - seemingly without any problems.  However... The photos are shown in the Catalog and accessible in the Organizer, but all of them are identified by a ! icon (upper left-hand corner of each photo)  as being "offline" and still resident on the flash (E:) drive.  Therefore, they can not be edited.  I've tried 2x to reformat and reload the photos onto several other flash drives and then download them into the Catalog without any success.  They still are identified as being resident on the flash drive, only.  Does anyone know what's going on and/or how to fix it?  Thanks for any help can give.
    Elements "newby"

    Ken,
Thanks for educating me on how the Catalog actually works.  However, I still don't understand how I could seamlessly load all of the other 14,000 photos into my computer from CDs and DVDs, but none from a flash drive.  All of the photos I loaded came from Kodak Easyshare and Windows files located on another computer.  I look at all of these removable media types as a viable means for transferring files from one computer to another.  Why were the photos on the flash drive treated differently that that located on the CDs or DVDs when imported into the computer containing the Photoshop Elements program?
Anyway, thanks for the quick response.

  • MDT Image Deployment Using Flash Drive

    Hi,
In my environment i am using MDT 2010 image deployment process to deploy Windows XP and Windows 7 OS images,
As image deployment is foccussed on multiple remote locations we have planned to move with USB Flash drive (Pen Drive) for image deployment,
The problem occurs here in normal system through diskpart utility i can able to get all the disks including my flash drive but in win pe mode i am unable to get my flash drive listed in diskpart utility.
so the image deployment process hangs on to the microsoft solution accelerator screen i am unable to predict the actual reason but i can predict this can happen because of mass storage driver problems.
I tried the same using USB Hard Disk and succeded with the deployment and i am unable to guess what makes difference between USB Hard disk and USB Flash Drive.
Can you just help me out on this to close the problem ASAP..
So that i can proceed with my roll out activities.
    Thanks in advance,
    Siva

    Hi,
At last the image deployment using flash drive works for me.
    I attempted the following steps,
First i converted the flsh drive to bootable flash drive using diskpart utility,This can be done in Windows 7 Operating system only.
navigate to cmd and type Diskpart, and enter the below commands,
    List disk
    Select Disk no
    create partition primary
    select partition no
    active
    format fs=ntfs
    Assign
    Exit
Upon completition,Insert windows 7 DVD to the system and do the following
Navigate to DVD Drive in my case it is G: and change directory to boot
    G:cd boot
    G:\Boot>Bootsect.exe /nt60 I: where I: is my flash drive
Then copy the contents to the Usb flash drive and change the first boot device of the target system to local hard disk and deploy the image
while in Win pe mode use disk part utility to check whether your disk got detected.
If everything is ok then it will work.
    Thanks for your valuable time.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Siva
