FlASH DRIVE RECOGNIZED BY TWO OF THREE COMPUTERS

Have a new Transcend flash drive.  I have three computers: 1 with Windows X and two with Windows 8.  The one with Windows X and one of the ones with Windows 8 (a notebook) recognizes the flash drive.  But the towers desktop with Windows 8
does not.  What to do?  (The computer that will not recognize this flash drive recognized everything else, including other flash drives.)

Answers to the questions by Olaf:  I tried other USB ports.  No different!  No, the SSD does not show up in the Device Manager or the Disk Management Console.  No, Windows does not attempt to install a driver! No, there is no security
suite installed with that configuration!
I have decided that the best answer is to take the damn SSD and either throw it away or use it in other computers only, where it works just fine.   (PS. I bought two more SSD's on sale.  They, work just fine in all three computers.)
Final PS:  Thank you, Olaf.  And greetings to you from the United States.

  • Flash drive recognized by computer but not opening.

My friend has a HP v240 flash drive with storage capacity 4 GB.
Yesterday I plugged it in my laptop and copied some movies in it. I removed it from the laptop after I was done and then I plugged it in the desktop. There was some message saying the flash drive needs to be formatted before use which i ignored and closed. After that the flash drive wouldn't open. i tried unplugging it and plugged it again but it didn't work. i tried using it in a different port. the computer recognized the pen drive but when i tried opening the removable drive from MY COMPUTER there was a msg saying 'No disc found'. It shows the same message in all the ports and also in my laptop when I tried plugging it there too. I tried all recovery options to make it work including the HP recovery tool but it wouldn't work. I tired all other methods for formatting but i am unable to format it because it shows a message that 'the device has no media'.
    Please Help.

I get to answer my own question. The MacBook Pro did finally recognize the flash drive when I changed the filename of the file I copied to it on the iMac to the fat32 format. (only 8 characters --> 12345678.ext )
Makes no sense to me but I am not an Apple code writer.

  • Two iPhones - Three Computers

Sorry for the long post here... but I am stumped.
I have two iPhones... one I just purchased this week and one that I have had for a couple of months. I also have two PC's at home and my company laptop.
I am having problems syncing my wife's iPhone to her PC... I can go back to my PC (BTW this is the iPhone that is a couple of months old) where the iPhone was setup and intialized for service and it syncs and backs up fine. On my wife's PC I can see her phone in iTunes... but go to sync and backup... it just flashes on the phone for a second and nothing happens. I have thought about doing a restore... but there are quiet a few contacts on the phone that I really don't want to chance loosing.
Issue two... I just noticed on my new iPhone that I purchased this week that I am experiencing the same thing on my (home) PC... the only difference is I can reboot the PC and it seems to take the sync... at least it shows in the sync records as being a good backup.
Are there limits to iTunes or the iPhone to the number of devices you can sync or backup.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW... I have also removed and reinstalled iTunes on her PC and still have the same issue.
    Thanks,
    Ronnie

I understand your problem; my wife and I each have an iPhone and I do the syncing for both. I previously used a Windows machine for this, and had many problems, most due I suspect to using that particular flavor of Windows. I could sync under different user names but it was a hassle keeping two copies of iTunes up to date, since I buy and use most of the music and video and had to make choices for her iPhone based on what I thought she might like to listen to or watch. Now that I use a Mac the syncing process is much smoother.
As for the contacts, if you're using Windows, all your contacts...yours and your wifes'...are backed up in the Windows Address Book, whether you use the WAB or not. This can lead to some interesting scenarios if either of you have some contacts you want to keep private. Find the .wab file in your Windows folder and by backing that up, you will be backing up your contacts. By renaming the backup you should be able to do a restore if by chance you overwrite the file with a sloppy sync.

  • We have 3 MacBook Pros in our house, connected by a WiFi network. I am having troubles connecting an external hard drive thru our router, to make back ups of all three computers wirelessly.

I have purchased a 3rd party external hard drive to back up all three computers. I have done the intial back up by connecting each computer separately to the drive via USB. I was told at the Apple store where I purchased the drive, that I could then connect the hard drive to our router via the USB and then use Time Machine to back up the computers wirelessly. But I can't seem to figure out how to do that. I have connected the device to the router, but don't see it on Finder and when I check with Time Machine, it doesn't recognize any device. Help please!

First off your external drive must be formatted Mac Extened (Journaled) for it to work with Time Machine. As that is not a widely used format, the Apple Mac format, most routers do not support it so the router will not see it is even connected to the router. For the router to see the drive is must be formatted either FAT32 or on some routers they can see/read/write to the NTFS format. But if you kformat it like that then Time Machine will not backup to it.
About the only device that can be used for network backups of Mac computers is an Apple Time Capsule.
    So you have 2 options.
    1) Do all the backups by connecting that drive directly to each Mac.
    2) Take it back and get a Refund then buy an Apple Time Capsule. And or some other Network Attached Storage device (a NAS) that cane be formatted Mac Extended (Journaled) and be seen on your LAN and that the Mac's can backup up to.

  • Issues with exporting video from MacBook Pro to flash drive

I cannot sucessfully transfer [export] video taken on my gopro camera, from my MacBook Pro to any flash drive and play them on other computers.  For some reason the files are not playable, even with quicktime.  They will not play with ANY of my video softwares such as divx or any AVCHD software on a windows computer.  I need to make a presentation for a club trip in a few days! Can any one please suggest what is wrong?  They play on the Mac using Flip player but not quicktime!
Oh, and I don't have issues with transfering or exporting Jpegs or other photo formats.  Only video.
    Message was edited by: gmob25

hmmm.. the files from GoPro are already mp4 format.  The Flash is already FAT32, brand new 16gig...
I am new to Macs but have no problems with PC's.  I suspect that because the files are exporting as shadowed files which won't play and are very small kb files, yet they are actually in excess of 140 mb each that it might have something to do with the iphoto software?  That's where the pics and video are, they imported to there by default, not to a folder in the home folder [which is where I would have expected them to be]
By the way, the GoPro is already in mp4 format so it is easy when transferring to computers. No need to convert. I tried converting them to see what the outcome might be, and none worked!  I tried every format I could find using Video converter ultimate software, which is excellent.
And the problems began when quicktime wouldnt play the file, the screen was black.

My assistant and I are using two Lightrooms (i.e. two serial numbers) and need to share between our two computers. I provide originals to her onto a flash drive. She tags them and returns them to me. I then copy the photos from her flash drive onto my computer and load them in my LR. The photos appear but witthout any editing or tagging. We need to be able to have her working on the photos on her computer with her copy of LR and me on my computer with my version of LR being able to access what is already tagged and given back to me. This seems hard. We need advice on if it is at all possible to have two computers simultaneously working on LR . I bought her her own version because I was told at the time of purchasing that that was the only way to share. Please advise urgently! Thanks.

Sounds like your assistant isn't instructing Lightroom to write the tagging and editing to the files themselves, so wehn the files return to you, they don't have editing and tagging information. She need to select the photos in Lightroom and then Ctrl-S (Cmd-S on Mac). Or alternatively turn on the option to autmoatically write this information to the files.
If you are using RAW photos, then this information will be written to a sidecar XMP file, and your assistant must provide you with the sidecar file. If these photos are not RAW photos, then the information is written directly into the photo file itself.
Lightroom wasn't designed to be a multi-user program, and so it is truly not possible to have two people working on the same catalog at once. The way you are doing things, as modified above, is probably the way to go.
As an alternative, you can transfer (portions of) catalogs as well as photos back and forth and then all of these issues disappear, but a catalog might be rather large for a flash drive (or maybe not, it depends)

  • External Hard Drives (and some flash drives) Not Recognized by Server2003

I recently purchased a new computer (Dell T100 server) and old Server2003 disk (OEM disk on eBay). Installed Server2003 and added File Server role only. My data is located on a Western Digital Passport that is recognized no problem on any other computer in the office (all XP). When I connect it to the server (front or rear, same result), it does not give it a drive letter, and says there are 0 bytes used 0 bytes free. Under Computer Management->Storage->Disk Management it shows: Volume: blank, Layout: Partition, Type: Basic, File System: blank, Status: Healthy. It's as if it does not know how to read the file system.
What do I need to do to Server2003 to get this drive with my data on it to be read by my new server?

    Hi,
Following is the System Requirements from Western digital’s website.
    Windows
    Available USB port
    Windows 2000/XP/Vista®
My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 Hard Drives(WDMEB3200)

Yes, generally speaking, if an external drive or flash drive can be recognized by Windows XP, it should work in Windows Server 2003. However, there is no guarantee.
If possible, I recommend that you plug the “unrecognized” drive to some other Windows Server 2003 computers to test whether it works. If the issue continues, I suggest that you contact the vendor or the drive for more details.
By the way, what’s the version of Windows Server 2003 you used? Please update it to the latest service pack to check whether they works.
    Best Regards,

  • Flash drive won't mount on iMac but mounts on all other computers

I have two new PNY 8GB flash drives and both work on a Windows 7 laptop and two different Macbook Pro computers.  One Macbook is running 10.6 and the other is running 10.7.  Two other flash drives work just fine on the iMac but these PNY sticks do not.
I have restarted the iMac with and without the sticks plugged in.
I have tried all USB ports.
I have tried Disk Utility but I do not see anything on the left.
I have look in /Volumes and I don't see the USB stick.
What am I missing?  Why won't it work on the iMac but works on the Macbooks?

My other USB memory sticks, an iPhone, and two iPods work normally plugged into the USB connectors on the iMac.  It is just this one brand of USB sticks that don't work on the iMac BUT the same sticks work on two different MacBook Pro computers and even a Windows 7 computer.

  • Possible 8530 brick, HELP!! Just flashing red LED, Two then Three

I may have bricked my fiancee's phone
I connected it via USB cable to my PC, the PC responded as if it were a new device and started the driver install etc, it said the process was finished. The screen on the 8530 showed the computer hourglass twice on a black screen, and then went completely dark. The only sign of life from it is the LED flashing red, two then three flashes. The computer doesn't detect the device and neither does the BB Desktop Software.
I've pulled the battery, let it RIP, then put it back in and the same. Same with the battery out and the USB cable in. Same on wall charger cord.
I've Googled it to death and nothing has helped. Any and all suggestions are welcome, she's threatening severe bodily harm and more if I can't resolve this.... At the very least can any tell me what the phone is saying through the LED? It flashes red twice quickly, short pause, then three quickly, then repeats after about 3-4 sec.

  • Flash Drive No Longer Recognized

I purchased a new PNY Turbo 3.0 128 GB Flash Drive, formatted it as Mac OSX Journaled, transferred files to it, encrypted it, used it for about 30 minutes on my iMac, then it disappeared while navigating in Finder.
The flash drive does not show in Finder, Disk Utilities, or System Information.  Yes, show external drives is checked in Finder Preferences.
The USB is recognized in an older Macbook using a much older OS, although I can't view the contents and a message on the Macbook says that I need to put the drive into a device with an updated Mac OS.
No other user accounts on my iMac can view the flash drive.
So far I have done numerous restarts, shutdowns, and remounts, reinstalled Mavericks (again), repaired disk permissions, etc.
This is the second issue I've had with an Apple formatted and encryped flash drive disappearing.  I've put an entire Sunday afternoon reading through threads and troublshooting this, and looks like some people just accept it as another thing that doesn't work on their Mac or go try different brands of flash drives until one works.
Suggestions or recommendations anyone?  I would like to keep this flash drive (it does have the Mac symbol on the packaging) if possible.

Did you ever get a satisfactory response to this?
I too have just encountered this issue.  I have a PNY USB 3.0 128MB flash drive.  I used it successfully for several months.
Today, connecting it to a brand new Mac Mini, 10.10, it is not recognized.  It's not just that it isn't recognized... It's not even showing up in Disk Utility.  The only indication I have that the system has detected it is this log message:
    2014-10-26 12:20:55.000 PM kernel[0]: USBMSC Identifier (non-unique): 09031000003796153712 0x154b 0xfa05 0x1075, 2
Also, it shows up in System Information, in the USB Device Tree, but nowhere else.
I then tried it in my Retina MB Pro (2.3GHz i7) running 10.9.5, where I had always successfully used it, with the exact same results.
It appears that the OS is failing to load the driver, or perhaps something in the USB negotiation is failing.
I tried it on a couple of Macs, running 10.9.5, both USB2.0 and USB3.0, with no luck.  My old Snow Leopard 2005 iMac recognized it, but the filesystem was too new for it to read it. (It is an encrypted USB volume).  I was, however, able to copy the raw disk image, even though that mac couldn't read it.  I am hoping to access the files that way.
Now... I just put the USB Key into another of my Macbook Pros, an old 2.33GHz Core2Duo running 10.7.5, and this machine was able to access the encrypted partition with no problems at all.
So, I conclude that this is some problem related to 10.9.x, since both USB2.0 and USB3.0 Mac's running 10.9 were unable to recognize the disk, yet a 10.7.5 machine with USB2.0 reads this disk fine.
I'm hoping to get a suggestion from someone on how to best go about finding the root cause of this issue...
    Thanks,
    Pat

  • USB flash drive not recognized by Macbook Leopard 15.1

    Hi
Until last week my macbook was able to recognize my USB flash drives and my IPOD in Itunes and also as an independant drive.
Last week it started to give trouble. It simply does not recognizes any USB flash drives I plug in as well as my IPOD music into Itunes.
This is very strange since it is recognizing the HP all in one. It scans and prints. I purchased this HP all in one last week and installed the software for it. I am not sure how this could have affected that I cannot mount any USB drives.
    Can you please help? Anyone?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple discussions
Can you see the devices if you use Utilities/Disk Utility? Maybe you need to reformat them. Take care, reformatting will lose the data on the device.

  • My flash drive is not being recognized by Imac

Hi I am new to iMac and I just bought it yesterday. I am trying to move everything from two laptops to my iMac. I have bought a brand new 8g flash drive and when I plug it into the back of the iMac, nothing happens. I took it to Best buy and had someone "format" it but when I brought it back home to try again, my iMac still did not recognize it.
I also have tried connecting an ethernet cable to the iMac and to the toshiba laptop and I cant figure out how to transfer everything.
Last question, when i plug in my iphone nothing happens on my iMac. When I plug it into my PC iTunes automatically pops up, why is this? and what do i need to do?
    Thank  you!

Plug in the flash drive in question. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. In the lefthand sidebar do you see your flash drive listed? It will appear sort of like this:
Select the topmost listing then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Select one partition from the Partition Layout dropdown menu. Click on the Options button and set the partition scheme to MBR and click on the OK button. Set the Format Type to exFAT from the dropdown menu. Click on the Apply button.
You should be able to use the flash drive on both Macs and PCs.

  • ATP Photo Finder GPS not recognized on Mac as USB flash drive

Much like the problem with the Sony GPS-CS1, it appears the ATP Photo Finder device also will not be recognized as a flash drive on a Mac. Tiger worked with the Sony for awhile, but recent updates (as well as Leopard 10.5.x) have made it no longer work. There are other topics on the GPS-CS1 in these forums detailing those problems.
I picked up an ATP Photo Finder from My Discount Digital to try it out. It logs data, then you insert the memory card in to the device and it will GPS stamp the JPGs. It sounds like a great idea, but when it didn't work I was going to have to plug it up to my Mac and use PC software via Parallels to reprocess the images.
It is not recognized -- and under Parallels, a new USB device shows up simply listed as "U" under the pull-down menu. When I try to select it, it claims it is already in use. Methinks Apple Mac OS X is semi-grabbing the device but not being able to use it.
    Odd.
So I post this in case others have the ATP Photo Finder and have problems... Maybe we can figure something out.

Well, here's an odd (and quick) self follow-up... I was reading an Apple Help file and it suggested looking at the System Profiler to see if the device is being recognized. Indeed, it showed the "U" and some garbled characters (so something is not quite right). It also showed it was plugged in through my powered USB hub. I bought this hub after running in to issues with devices that would not work plugged in to the iMac keyboard... On a whim, I plugged the ATP Photo Finder in to the non-powered USB port on the keyboard and ... it worked. It still shows up as U(garbled) but I was able to access it from the Mac Finder.
    Interesting.
