Flash Drives and Network Homes

I have a problem that is driving me nuts. If a kid logs into an OpenDirectory-based network home on an older iMac (white, 2007) and plugs in a flash drive, the drive mounts no problem to their desktop. If the same kid logs into the same account on a newer iMac (aluminum, 2009), the flash drive does not mount. Both iMacs are running 10.5.8. Even better (and consequently why I'm posting here), the flash drive in question mounts under the newer iMac when logged into a local machine account. The flash drive is formatted for FAT-32, I am out of ideas, and the students are getting angry. Help!

Hi Russell
Perhaps there are two computer groups? One for older (white) and one for Newer (alu) iMacs? Managed Preferences for Media Access on the older iMacs is defined to allow USB Memory Stick access and is not allowed on the newer iMacs?

  • Does it make sense to configure an iMac with a 256MB internal flash drive and rely on an external Thunderbolt HD for storage?

I am considering buying a 27" iMac with the i7 processor, 16GB RAM (I can add another 16GB without throwing out any RAM that came with the machine), and the faster graphics card with 4GB video memory. I am wondering whether I should get the 3TB Fusion Drive (of which only 128GB is flash drive), or whether I should get a 256GB internal flash drive and rely on a Thunderbolt external HD for storage.
For reference, my current Applications folder is less than 100GB, my Library folder is less than 15GB, and my Users folder is almost 400GB. However, almost 300GB of my Users folder are two subfolders: Movies and Pictures. It seems that I don't need to store movies and pictures in the Users folder, and I don't, for the most part. Anything else need to be in the iMac's "home HD"?
I know Apple offers 500GB and 1T flash drives as well, but they are too expensive.
Having the HD outside the iMac would have the benefit of not having to send in the entire computer in case the HD went down.
Would I have a performance penalty having the HD external, even with Thunderbolt?

While I generally agree with what Mr. Kaufmann has already said, if you are doing video editing on your Mac, a 256GB system drive is pretty thin and could be a source of future frustration, even trouble.  Your system needs disk space (aka virtual memory) to operate in addition to whatever you have stored on the system HD.   Various applications also require temporary storage on the system HD ... especially resource-intensive apps like video, photo, audio (media) apps.  You already appear have ~115GB between the system, applications & user library.  That's nearly half of a 256GB drive ... not much left for working storage.
While editing video, especially anything highdef, you can easily need 50-100GB or more for operation.  And while Final Cut Pro X allows you to specify a different hard drive for its render & cache files, etc., if you don't specify an alternate location it defaults to your system HD for that storage.  Even so, FCPX and similar apps still need working space on your system HD.  I suggest that 500GB is the bare minimum for a system HD on a Mac used for video editing, 1TB would be better.
'Course, if by movies you only meant viewing movies then this is a totally moot point.

  • HT1751 I have my own ITunes on my laptop. How do I take an ITunes Library from another computer, put it on a flash drive and put that library on multiple other computers?

I will be creating a new ITunes on each computer. Do I then just plug in the flash drive and copy it to the new library? Is this the same process as I created new playlists?

  • HT5172 Glad to have USB capability on my new iMac.  Been in Mac world all of 2 days now.  Question - I downloaded photos from a Centron flash drive and am wondering if flash drives have to be ejected the same as on a PC?  Can't find how to do it.  Thanks.

Been in the iMac world now all of 2 days.  I'm glad to have USB capability.  I downloaded photos from a Centron flash drive and now need to remove the flash drive.  Do you eject flash drives on iMacs as we did on PC's?  Can't find an answer in the support area.  Thanks...

Yes. All external drives regardless of how they are connected must be ejected before they can be unplugged.

Download and intall the Windows Support software. You can start Bootcamp Assistant again and only select the option to download the support software. Then follow the instructions to save and install the support software.
Or, manually download the support software here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/downloads/.

  • My macbook wont sync the music i downloaded onto a flash drive and onto the mac book what do i do?

My macbook wont sync the music i downloaded onto a flash drive and onto the mac book what do i do?

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • I bought a used macbook air,  it didn't come with the flash drive to do a factory reset.  Can I download the info needed and save it to my own flash drive and then do a factory reset?  If not what can I do?

If it originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, click here, phone Apple, and order a replacement.
If it originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart it with the Option, Command, and R keys held down.

  • For a while now my computer has been saying " Start up disk is nearly full", however I don't have a lot of stuff saved on the computer I moved a lot to a flash drive, and all the other stuff are songs and recently saved essays for school. Help.

For a while now my computer has been saying " Start up disk is nearly full", however I don't have a lot of stuff saved on the computer I moved a lot to a flash drive, and all the other stuff are songs and recently saved essays for school. I have and frequently empty my trash can. I have researched this before and i see a lot of things that say get a external hard drive, but before I go and purchase one I want to make sure there is no other, simpler way, to solve this problem. Help Please.

You need an external drive so you can free up disk space. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • I exported my passwords to a flash drive, and have a new computer. How do I get those passwords moved to the NEW machine?

I exported my passwords to a flash drive, and have a new computer. How do I get those passwords moved to the NEW machine?

Firefox doesn't have an "export" feature built into it for password data.
Exactly what did you do to "export" your passwords?
    Did you use this extension?
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/password-exporter/
If so, see the screenshots on that page to see the Import function.
If you copied the two files that are used for storing passwords from the old computer to back them up, just copy those 2 files into the Profile folder on the new computer to restore them.

  • Loading flash drives and CDs

I have mobile users whose use mobile accounts that do not have syncing capabilities, everything is running well apart from loading flash drives, the flash drives cannot open nor can content be saved on the flash drives. But when you restart the machine everything goes to normal, what could be the problem?
    The server runs 10.5.8
Clients are running 10.6.4 on iMacs

Update and answer my own question.
I re-formatted the Imation drive as FAT16 (what is was already) using disk Utility and the strange file has disappeared. Must have been something to do with the factory formatting.
I also read that the only thing to do about Flash drives and post-sleep kernal panic is to make sure you disconnect the drive before sleep. Either that or get a card that will identify a flash drive as being attached and prevent sleep, or to disable sleep mode.

  • How to download pictures fm i-photo  to USB flash drive and/or to a cd

How can a person download pictures from i-photo to a USB flash drive
and/or to a cd with the purpose being to share the photos with another
group using a laptop computer to control and project images to a screen.
I can't find instructions anywhere in apple help. Please keep it simple.
    Thanks.
    LAS (Learning Apple Stuff)

Select the pics in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export them to a Folder on the desktop. Then drag that folder to the USB drive / or burn it to CD with the Finder's Burn command.

  • Flash drives and sleep issues

I'm not sure if this is a Tiger problem or a G4 issue, but I'll start here.
I plug 1Gb flash drives into an Adaptec FW+USB2 card in my Quicksilver running 10.4.11 and the computer will go to sleep fine. Read on.
With a SanDisk drive when I wake up the computer it gives me an error message about the drive not having been properly removed, but the computer does wake up and the drive icon is still present and the drive appears to be okay. Apart from having to click to remove the warning message nothing seems to be the problem. Okay, I can live with that.
I do the same thing with an Imation 1Gb flash drive and the computer will not wake up. I have to use the small reset button to reboot the computer.
Both drives are FAT16 format because I use them to regularly transfer files between the Quicksilver and a Windows machine. The only difference I notice between the drives is that when I use the Imation drive a file or folder or something named "EA" briefly appears in the Finder window where all the regular files are listed. There isn't any icon and there's nothing under date, size, or kind. If I click on the EA it disappears, but reappears each time I attach the drive.

Update and answer my own question.

  • I just downloaded pictures off of a flash drive, and half of the pictures are messed up?

I just downloaded pictures off of my flash drive and half of the picture comes out really oddly.... Example:
Does anyone know what is causing this?

Yes, forgetting the pictures, you desktop background is showing these color issues?
You need to contact Apple for diagnostic / repair.  You have a hardware issue with the logic board or logic feeder cable to monitor (unlikely the monitor itself).
You just bought it and its a Retina macbook Pro correct?    Never dropped or any water spills?
I was hoping that wasnt it until you said that.
while you STILL CAN see everything (even if off color) backup up ALL VITAL DATA to an external mem stick or hard drive.  Documents, pics, working files, etc etc

  • I have a downloaded font file for a school problem on a flash drive and I do not know how to install it into my photoshop application. Need to be walked through this as I am an older user who does not understand any of this stuff.

Fonts are handled by your operating system and installed through the respective System Control panel (Windows) or Fontbook (Mac). On Windows simply type "Fonts" in the search bar in the start menu and when you open the panel/ folder use File --> Add Font. On Mac the procedures are similar, you just need to find the Fontbook app in Applications:Utilities.

  • Server Monitor doesnt't report info, memory, drives and network

Sermer Monitor connects OK to the server but most of the Info page is empty, displaying 2 dashes only in the fields. It only displays the LOM IP address and the Last update field. Even not the serial number! Also, on the Memory page the Slot shows None. The same situation on the Drives and Network pages. Just as if the server has no hard drives or network interfaces at all. Everything else seems to be OK -- Power, Temperature, Blowers and Security - all display meaningful information.
I am sure that the missing things were displayed sometime in the past, but now they have vanished. I can also restart or power off/on the server. But I cannot get the System Profiler Report or maybe I am stupid and don't know how to see it, because the log says - Apple System Profiler report received from server.
Maybe this is of no relevance but it is also not possible to get any Reports from the server using the ARD program. It just sits there waiting for the report but it never comes
    Any ideas?

I found a solution that worked for me.
I shut down the server and did a warm and cold reset of the LOM with the Console and IPMITool command from my Administration Client.
    ipmitool -H <ip of LOM-Port> -U <username> -P <password> mc reset (warm|cold)
For a description see 'man IPMITool'
After restarting the server all information was shown.
