Flash for Dial-Up connections
I have a site which contains a flash video on each page. The
video is central to the whole concept of the site, so it's
important to maintain its size and clarity. My client insists the
site (meaning the video) must be capable of running on a dial-up
connection. At the moment it stutters too badly on dial-up. Is this
something that is do-able whilst still maintaining reasonable
quality? Or perhaps it is accepted in the industry that such a site
simply will not work on dial-up?
The current flv's run at 8 fps with a 200kps data rate. Size
320x240 video, not incuding controller. I could probably reduce it
to 6fps (at 150kps data rate) which would be a bit choppy and lower
quality, but mostly it's talking heads, so perhaps I can get away
with it. Question is whether that would be enough to make it
workable on dial-up. Is there any other option? (I don't want to
reduce the size of 320x240)

I wouldn't make my site based on the 56k user unless that is
your target audience, and if it is then kill the flv files. Not too
many 56k users want to sit for 5 minutes to see a crappy 30 second
video (quality not content).
You should re-encode those videos to play at a better rate
for broadband users, and maybe add extra buttons for dial-up users.
This way you have 2 flv's of the same movie, encoded at different
rates. If someone clicks on the 56k version, they get the choppy
low res junk file. Buffer it longer to make it play smoother. If
they click on the broadband video link they get the nice, smooth,
clean and clear video that doesn't distract from the design.

I just purchased a MacBook, which I love already, but I'm a bit disappointed that they decided to drop the internal modem. Regardless, I'm trying to figure out the best way for me to connect to the internet now (I use dial-up). The $50 external modem seems okay, but the reviews/comments have been lukewarm at best.
Does anyone here use the Airport for dial-up connections? I've never tried doing the wireless thing with my dial-up ISP (which is ISPWest, btw), so I'm curious to see if it's worth doing, given that the connection is already slow to begin with.

The internet speed (56Kbps) was just as fast as if I was directly connected to the phone line.
I did in fact share the phone connection wirelessly with three computers which was useful.

Flash accessing the Dial Up connection
I'm new to the forums, so hello to everybody.
I've got a project on my hands, an interactive kiosk. I've created the interface in Flash, but I have some issues I can't get past. First of all, I want to create an emergency call feature, where the user presses a button and the kiosk dials the emergency number (112 for Europe). Now, how can I make the Flash movie call upon Windows' dial up connection, dial a number, establish a connection then disconnect? I know that Flash can't use Windows services directly, so how can I accomplish this?
My second issue is that I also would like to create a photo-shoot system, where the Flash movie takes a snapshot from the webcam, saves it as a file, then the user needs to input his email address and the file is sent by email as an attachment.

I have a dial up connection. When I get a program update that
may be 100M in size it can take a lot of time. I'm looking for a
download accelerator program that will automatically start in
this kind of situation. I know there are programs that if you
know the site and the name of the download you want, you put
this info in and the accelerator program works. But there is
no way that I can figure to put this info in when a program
tells me an update is available and then starts a 7hr download.That's the size of Firefox Setup 6.0.2.exe, which I started to download but figured there had to be more.
So, you're saying that once that downloads and you run it, there's nothing else to get online? I could run Firefox Setup 6.0.2.exe successfully while not connected to the Internet? -
E71x Dial-up connection for internet access on ph...
When I lived in Africa I would use either google talk or skype to speak with my family back in the States. Wifi was extremely rare especially in my area so I had to connect via a dial-up connection. When I bought my E71x, I installed "Fring" on it (an amazing app) and I am able to call and speak to someone on google talk or skype over my phone. My question is, how do I setup a dialup access point for my cell phone so that I can access the internet and google talk/skype by that connection? Thanks, Joshua
I don't use either Fring or Skype in my handset, I use a program called truphone from www.truphone.com and the network settings enable you to use it via 3G GPRS or WiFi.
You should check with your network operator that this is permitted, as most see VoIP services as revenue loss and will disable the ports or charge extra for the service.

Firefox can usually resume from interrupted downloads as long as Firefox is not closed or exited. If you are already using Firefox to download the latest version full installer, then most likely there wouldn't be a problem between the dial-up interruptions. Also you can make sure by going to '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Downloads''' (or '''Ctrl''' + '''J''') and right-click the entry and try to resume if it's not automatically picked up.
If this is not working as expected, then you may have to look for alternate ways. -

But it sounds like the router in the wife's office is now in the wrong mode..
If you have an existing main router replace the second router for a switch .. that is the easy way.
Otherwise you need to bridge the router if it has that option.. most do not. Or use wan bypass.. where you turn off the dhcp server in the router and fix its ip to match the range of the main router.. this is the hassle of using router as a switch.
BUT I am making a huge number of assumptions.
What I need is the full network layout.. a quick picture would help.
I need main modem.. main router.. (maybe same box or different).. make model and current IP address and how dhcp is setup.
I need secondary router.. if that is what it is, IP and settings.
I want the printer type and model. How it is connected.
BTW I much prefer to see a network printer plugged into the network rather than usb.. it is only a matter of sorting the IP settings and driver pointing to the network rather than local.
Or you should think of it as a broken washing machine and call the technician.. who could fix the whole lot in an hour. -

Presuming that you are connected to your modem via a serial connection:

Basically, what you need to do is to find out what are the AT commands used for your modem and send the command over using VISA related functions (e.g. VISA Read VI). You can send the command in a sequantial method. You can do this by using the method found in the first link. The best would be that you can create a state machine where by each case/state will consists of commands that you need to run in a sequence (let's say a sequence of AT commands for sending a message via TCP/IP communication).
You can also use a sequence structure but I would not suggest that since you cannot stop the sequence half way and if your command is very long, this may look pretty messy for your code.
The main question is:
What is the version of your LabVIEW?
What is the modem that you are using and how is your hardware setup is going to be (e.g. how did you communicate with your modem)?

Slow ARP response for dial-in clients
I’ve been experiencing an intermittent issue with remote PC’s connecting to a Cisco AS5350 Universal Gateway - basically, a RAS server.
The issue as far as I’ve been able to pinpoint seems to be related to the amount of time it takes the dial-in client to register an ARP entry on the local network where the RAS server and other servers are connected. If I start an extend ping to one of the servers on the local network (not to the RAS server) once my dial-up connection has been established, I typically see anywhere between 3 and 18 ICMP request timeouts before I start receiving replies. And if at the same time I start an extended ping to the IP address of the RAS server, ICMP replies are received immediately with no request timeouts.

The switch that the AS5350 and the servers are connected to is a WS-C2960G-8TC-L layer-2 switch with a very basic config. For troubleshooting, I enabled “debug arp” on the switch and attempted a dial-up connection to the AS5350. Once the call was established and I received a DHCP lease (192.168.240.131), I started an extended ping to a server (192.168.240.21) on the network… see below:

The first line of the debug shows the switch creating an “incomplete entry” for the dial-in client (192.168.240.131).
For all subsequent ICMP requests, you can see that the dial-in client has a MAC address of 0000.0000.0000 – I guess you would call this an incomplete entry.
On the last line of the debug output, you can see that the dial-in client (192.168.240.131) finally gets the MAC address of the AS5350 (000d.280c.fe1b) assigned to it – this is when we start getting ICMP replies.
So during this capture, there were 12 ICMP request timeouts before the dial-in client started receiving replies.

Is anyone aware of an IOS bug or an error in my configurations that could be causing the delay in creating an ARP entry for the dial-in client?
I am open to any suggestions.
BTW, if I add static arp entries on the server, ICMP replies are typically received after one or two request timeouts.
However, I feel this is not a solution to the problem, only a band-aid fix.

IPhone is at a grey screen after flashing for a few minutes
My iPhone is at a grey screen after flashing at the same screen for a couple of minutes.
I can turn my screen on and off, phone functions and siri both work. The screen is just grey, no error messages or anything.
This happened after I was trying to connect to a wifi hotspot and I was typing something into a field when it froze, flashed for a few minutes, and stayed on a grey screen. This has been going on for about an hour and a half.

If your iPhone is flashing with a grey screen, I would suggest resetting the device and resetting the network settings. If that does not resolve the issue, then you may need to back up to iCloud and restore it.

Hi, I'm looking to "grey out" a dial-up connection for some users in workplace, so that they are forced to use our VPN client in order to access the web. Does anyone know if this is possible?
I know you can disable all settings on that tab using local group policy, (e.g. Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer) but I only want to disable a specific dial-up connection (for usb 3G modems).
I've read of various IE settings being locked down in the registry here, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions, but havent seen the settings I want.

Dial Up Connection or lack of !
I have been trying for several days now to establish a dial up connection at my mothers home without success. Both the BT Dial Up department and BT Fault reporting have been exceedingly helpful in trying to give assistance but the end result remains "No Dial Tone" when the modem tries to connect. BT have increased the gain on the line as much as possible without success.
They tell me the property is 6km from the exchange and this could be the problem. I thought every phone line should be able to get dial up regardless of distance from the exchange.
I have tried disabling the modem option to listen for a diial tone and also plugged directly into the inside of the master socket with no joy.
BT have offered to send a field engineer but have stated if he finds he can get a dial up signal with his equipment there will be a charge and I can't take that chance.
Does anyone have any ideas. I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and an external US Robotics USB modem. When I connect using the same sign in and configuration at my own property everything is just fine so it would not seem to be anything to do with settings or computer hardware.
I originally intended to use a mobile broadband doingle but the address is in a total blackspot on all networks. Broadband is too expensive for the minimul use needed at my mums address and I guess that could even struggle being 6km from the exchange.
