Flash froze and crashed computer

I was playing a flash-based game when the game completely locked up my computer, and the only possible solution was to do a hard reboot (pressing and holding the power key). I waited and then restarted, but the screen had vertical and horizontal pixelated lines running through it all, and it froze several times during the startup process. The computer restarted itself several times, but it kept freezing while still in the grey screen.
I tried starting it in safe mode, but I got the same results. An attempt to run from the Lion restore drive didn't work, either. I reset the SMC and PRAM, and while resetting the PRAM changed the nature of the lines on the screen (narrowed them down), it didn't help, either.
I finally got it to boot up, only to have it crash again when I attempted to watch a game on MLB.tv, which uses a Flash player. I have uninstalled and re-installed Flash, to no effect.
All of this started after the latest software update from Apple. My data is backed up, but not through Time Machine.
I have a 2008 16" MBP running the most updated version of Lion.

You have a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the Lion recovery partition, if present.

  • Catalyst/Chromium causes screen to flash wildly then crashes computer.

I'm using catalyst-test-pxp 14.3-1 and chromium 35.0.1916.153-1. I am using 2 monitors. The main one being my laptop's screen (LVDS) to the right and my secondary screen (CRT1) to my left. Previously I had used a single screen configuration, however after reconfiguring xorg.conf with aticonfig, spawning chromium will cause the screen to flash wildly and crash the computer, forcing me to hit the power button and wait for the system to power off. Here are some pictures that show what's happening: http://imgur.com/GidiC8p,0pna75I. Sorry for the poor formatting but I'm using elinks until xorg is fixed.
I understand that using a pastebin is discouraged over using the "code" tags, but I can't paste anything in the environment I'm in right now.

For clarification. I have 2 dedicated radeon cards. This is not a mistake.
I'd really appreciate any help given.

I'm going to jump on this dogpile with a "me too" post.
About my setup:  2 year old workstation, Intel Core2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, ATI Radeon 2600PRO graphics card, all up to date on Windows patches, latest device drivers, etc.
Until now the system was totally stable.  For the past 1-2 weeks, anytime I try to play videos on CNN's website (which uses Flash), my system freezes-- no response from mouse, keyboard, anything.  Only way out is a hard reset.
I've opened the case and checked all connections.  Pulled and re-seated memory, even switched the slots each stick is in.  Pulled and re-seated graphics card.  Cleaned CPU and graphics heatsinks with compressed air.  Verified all fans are working.  Replaced the power supply with a new Corsair 650w.  Ran utilities to verify CPU and GPU temps, and found all to be very good (it's a well cooled case).
I've completely uninstalled all traces of Flash using the Adobe Flash Uninstaller, after killing all but essential processes (to make sure nothing had Flash open).  Then I reinstalled the latest version available today (10 Feb 2011).  Both the ActiveX component for IE8, and the Firefox version, still bring about a system lockup.
The only, and I mean ONLY thing that ever crashes this computer is playing Flash videos, usually from CNN.
It does not matter if I am viewing in IE8 or the latest version of Firefox.  Result is exactly the same, on exactly the same videos, regardless of browser.
If this is truly a device driver issue, then it is ONLY triggered by Flash.  I'm a very busy telecommuter who spends as much as 10-12 hours a day on this machine for both work and recreation.  No other software of any kind causes this PC to lock up, so this is clearly a Flash-triggered problem.

i downloaded an adobe flash update and my computer after next logon got a blue screen.  I could only start in safe mode and until uninstalling the flash player could i start in safe mode with networking.  i cannot open any microsoft products now. I get a message saying adobe acrobat 10 is not designed to run on windows or uninstall and reinstall it ....but it will not let me uninstall it.  What do i do?  is this all an adobe issue or a windows problem??  thanks   Tim

Hate to suggest this, but you need to ask in the Flash forum. This forum is for Acrobat.

  • In disk utility, below Macintosh HD I have 4 trojan "decryptedFile.dmg (flash player)" and my computer is super slow, does erasing Macintosh HD will also erase these files?  If not how can I erase? (bear in mind computer so slow a click takes forever)

in disk utility, below Macintosh HD I have 4 trojan "decryptedFile.dmg (flash player)" and my computer is super slow, does erasing Macintosh HD will also erase these files?  If not how can I erase? (bear in mind computer so slow a click takes forever)

Thank you Thomas in fact I have seen your guide before  and had gone thru the steps including repair disk which didn´t work. I am erasing disk before checking hardware. I have posted a photo of the 4 decrypted files in the disk utility and also of the adobe icons in the dock and question marks. Some people say if the adobe appears in the dock is because it is the trojan flash player and they keep jumping in the dock.  If this is not malware it seems to be an incredible coincidence that when I start seeing these things in my dock and the decrypted files in my disk utility is when my computer goes so slow (I am typing this in my macbook air because to write this message in my imac would be about 6 hours, I am not kidding, it is completely useless at this point it took me 2 and half days too instal mac os x after disk repair, it took me 3 days to transfer just 100 gigabites and now is taking the whole day (and it says another day more) just to erase the disk. Despite all this the icon of adobe keeps jumping in the dock so, although I am no computer and mac expert, just an user, I am inclined to think that it is malware and it is a shame that mac doesnt´recognize it or have anything here to help me get rid of this.  I am not even sure if erasing the disk will work since repairing didn´t work... all advice is welcomed.

  • Flash content hard crashes computer, no matter what I do

I have gone to the end of the earth to find a solution to this problem and I cannot figure it out.
    I've tried older video drivers(nvidia, gtx460), I've tried newest, a little older.
I've tried as many different versions of Flash player I could find
Both combinations of flash player and video driver have been interchanged with more combinations than a Yahtzee dice game.
Computer build is less than a year old.
This crash was happening for a couple weeks very intermittently, then it got worse, then one of the lockups CAUSED BY FLASH to caused my operating system to become corrupt. THEN, even after a full format and reinstall, FLASH STILL CRASHED MY COMPUTER.
Every single piece of computer hardware has been stress tested and temperature monitored.
New PSU was installed (corsair hx750)
    Tried a different Graphics card.
Nothing. And I mean NOTHING. Stops my computer from hard crashing from flash content(videos mostly).
It causes either a complete powerdown INSTANTLY, then my computer restarts. OR the other crash it does is complete LOCKUP with a horrible sounding static sound loop.
    Please help!

All I can really say about that is that you're the only person I'm seeing complaining of these systems.  With 1.2 billion users, we'd be hearing about it if Flash was somehow magically able to cause this through normal operation (it's not).  The fact that your machine is powering off points to a hardware problem.
If you feel that you've exhausted your troubleshooting efforts there and are able to use the computer successfully without Flash Player installed, I'd recommend uninstalling:
    Uninstall Flash Player | Windows
Alternatively, if you have a sound card that isn't built onto the motherboard chipsets, you might yank it and see if your system stability improves, since it sounds like you've done that with the video card already.

  • CS4 no longer opens and crashes computer.

    Hi guys,
Got a major problem, the other day I started my computer to find windows checking my drives for inconsistancies, everything fine. I then came to start up photoshop and my computer crashes before it even reaches the splash screen. Everytime I click photoshop now requires a restart of the computer via the power/reset button as I loose all functionality (mouse/keyboard). I've attempted to uninstall and reinstall to no avail and i've scanned my drive and defragged in the hope that might sort it out. I've now run out of ideas about how I can get it running again.

There are two reasons, generally, for this:
    1.  You have a progressively failing hard drive.  This seems consistent with the other problems you describe.  In this case, you will likely find hard drive errors in your Windows System Event Log.  The solution is to do a good backup right away, and replace the drive.
    2.  You have Windows 7 and the Indexing process has triggered an "atomic oplock" bug.  In this case, the system will report possible corruption and CHKDSK will run at startup without having found any problems.  The solution is to disable indexing.
Do you see disk errors in your log?
If something has corrupted the data on your disk, the solution (after correcting the root problem) will likely be reinstalling Photoshop.

  • Flash Player keeps crashing computer

Hello, I am new at this forums. Basically in the last few weeks my computer started crashing when I access some web sites that uses flash player, could be and add or video, it has been happening randomly!!
I get the blue screen, and I am afraid if it keeps happening it might damage my system
I am using Windows XP SP3, I use IE8, I always install the latest flash player (now I have 11.7.700.169)
Updated my video driver...I tried disabling and enabling the accelerator, but no change.
After the computer recover from the blue screen I get a message that windows recovered from a serious problem with those lines:
    BCCode : 1000008e     BCP1 : E0000001     BCP2 : B8390925     BCP3 : A025D740

Please help me as this problem is affecting my work and slowing me down not mentioning the anxiety.
I heard it's a problem from Flash Player, but I was hoping the latest update will fix, well it didn't

Am I the only one with this problem?? I know that FP was causing this crashes and their latest release was supposed to fix it.
At least somebody let me know that I am not the only one!!

  • Computer will not recognise ipod and crashes computer

Working on windows xp, I have reset the ipod but it will not come up on the side bar, therefore I cannot download music, instead it just turns off the computer.
I am lost somebody please help!!!!!!!

Sorry I haven't a clue re the computer it was made to my spec.
Fair enough. Okay, we'll try analysing minidumps of the crash with Windows Debugging Tools to see if that can tell us which component or driver is causing the issue.
Open "My Computer", and see if you can find a directory called C:\Windows\Minidump. (That's where minidumps usually go on a PC, so long as the Systemroot hasn't been set to some other folder.)
If it's been collecting minidumps, there should be files in there with names like "Mini(number-numbers).dmp"
(If you have "Hide filename extensions for known file types" enabled in Windows, the ".dmp" extension may not appear on the dump files. The numbers in the file name will be different for each minidump, if minidumps are present.)
Once we've tracked down some minidumps, we can have a go at analysing them.
    1. Download and install the Windows debugging tools from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx
    2. Go to Start, All Programs, Debugging Tools For Windows, Windbg
Once you open Windbg, you will presented with a blank screen.
    3. Click on "File > Symbol File Path". Here you will enter the symbols
path. Symbols are needed to effectively debug.
    The path will be:
    SRVc:symbolshttp://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
    4. Enter in this path and click OK. Now, go to "File > Save Workspace"
so that your symbols path is saved for future use.
    5. Go to "File > Open Crash Dump" and load the file.
(An "Open Crash Dump" screen will appear ... doubleclick "My Computer", doubleclick "Local Disk", doubleclick "Windows", doubleclick "Minidump", and doubleclick on one of the minidumps in there.)
You will/should get a message to save base workspace information. Choose no.
Now you will get a debugging screen. It takes a little bit to run it,
as the symbols have to be downloaded as they are needed.
After the "bugcheck analysis" part of the screen comes up, look for the component that seems to be causing the crash. (It'll say "Probably caused by" ...)
Let us know the precise name of the component. (Include any file name extensions like .dll or .sys.)
If you can, have a look at several of your crash dumps. Are all the crashes being caused by the same component? If not, could you let us know the names of the various components being cited in the various crash dumps?

  • Ipod 30gb Video not recognised and crashes computer while connected

    Hi
Got my ipod 30gb for xmas. installed the software, then when it came to connect the ipod via usb, it recognises as far as there being a new disk but nothing else. Also i cannt open any other programs or icons on windows until i reset the ipod and disconnect.
any ideas please would be gratfeully received
    matt

I too have a 30GB 5G iPod that crashes my computer. It is not recognized by XP and is not recognized by iTunes either. I changed USB ports, tried the Updater (Updater never worked since the computer did not recognize the iPod), uninstalled/reinstalled iTtunes, rolled back the registry to several days earlier, disabled antivirus software, etc. I have so much practice resetting the iPod I can now do it blindfolded. I have also tried the iPod on another computer with exactly the same results, but an iPod Nano works flawlessly. There seems to be no other remedy except to send the thing back but the Apple phones are jammed and I can't get through.
A quick search of this forum shows many other similar problems with 5th genertion iPods. What a disappointing purchase!!

  • Time machine fails to back up and crashes computer

Hi I've been using time machine since April on my first external hard-drive (Partitioned so that it had time machine and room for music and photos) now I am trying to make time machine back up to a new external drive and every time it gets so far it crashes my mac please help me with any pointers I tried erasing it and formatting the new drive and making time machine back up to no drive then start backing up to this new drive but it keeps on failing.

First, make sure the new drive is set up properly. See #C1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If it's ok, do a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 there.
If that doesn't help, verify your internal HD, per #A5 there.
If it still crashes your Mac, try running this: [Apple Hardware Test: iMac (Mid 2007) and later models|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1883].

  • Front Row 2.1.6 freezes and crashes computer

I am pretty disappointed that for the entire time I have owned this computer (Fall 07), I still can't use Front Row. The latest upgrade gave me hope but I still can't play music.
When playing music, I can't get through one song before the screen saver goes blank leaving only the progress bar. This hard lock can only be resolved by holding the power button down until the unit shuts down. Anyone else experiencing this? If so, anyone found a solution?
I am running a MacBook Pro, 10.5.4, but again, the problem has persisted through all versions of Leopard and now, a Front Row upgrade too!
    Shawn

I have the same problem. It seems to be caused by the graphic card update following 10.5.2 and incorporated in every update since. Something in the driver cannot handle long song titles when playing in Front Row.
The only solution thus far, which works for me after a reinstall is never to update past 10.5.2 and not to install the graphics card update 1.0
Alternatively, enjoy editing your iTunes library to weed out long song titles. I have given up any hope that Apple will address this or release a graphics card restorer to remove the update. It is even more annoying when you release that the drive update was only released to fix problems a minority had with their Macbook Pros. It did not introduce any improvements or added functions. Mine worked perfectly well before. Now everyone's is screwed up.
