Flash Help and Publishing / IIS

My supervisor is responsible for publishing my projects to
our intranet server. He published a project of mine and found that
he ran into issues with IIS. I don't have all the details so this
may not be enough to get a good answer, but he told me that he had
to use an * (wildcard) in IIS to allow all the Flash Help
functionality to show on a web page. He wants to know what can be
done so the * does not have to be used, if anything, to have all
the functionality present. Thanks for any help if this is enough to
give a direction, and if not I will try and get more details from
him for later.

Hi jacobremprex
Are you using Flashhelp Pro output and the RH Server
software? If not, I don't think you need IIS to publish to the
intranet. You just need to publish to the intranet URL.
Can you tell us where the wildcard has been placed and also
what pieces of Flashhelp functionality aren't working.

We have developed a desktop application using Flash software and published the same for MAC environment. When we double click on the index.app file, the application is working perfectly in Mac 10.6.7 at our office. But if the same index.app file is double clicked in Mac 10.6.7 at out clients location, its not opening. For your information the client is able to open this same application by double clicking on index.swf file. The main problem is that client is not able to open the application using index.app file at their office whereas we are able to do so at our office. Can anyone give some suggestions to sort this problem?

The most common reason is different versions of Flash, or different versions of web browsers used. Some users may elect to not have Flash installed at all because of the processor overhead of Flash. If you are going to make an application for a client, check what operating system and browser versions they are using first. Then determine if a stand alone application is required, or if they have the necessary plugins to run specific browser enhanced code.
P.S. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control. Mac is the shorthand for Macintosh, the operating system and computers made by Apple Inc.

• Flash FLV and Microsoft IIS Bug?

I have run into a problem that may be a real problem for
anyone relying on SWF files playing FLV files from Microsoft IIS
servers. I have used this method of playing videos on a few of my
clients sites and as of the last week or so these videos stopped
playing! I know nothing changed with the videos so I was not sure
what happend. As a spent countless hours trouble shooting this
problem, I found that if I took the .SWF and FLV files off the
server they were on and moved them to another server (non
microsoft) they magically work again. At first I thought my hosting
company had a problem with their IIS server but I checked three
other servers (IIS) and they all have the same problem (all
patched). Now I know these files played on all these servers in the
last week or so. I even went as far as to check these file against
a computer running XP with IIS turned on and running and the SWF
file loads but will not play the FLV video. I even downloaded
"flvplayer" to check this theory to make sure I didnt do something
stupid with my SWF file. It appears that all my computers that have
been patched using microsoft's update program over the last week or
so are now broken. Is there anyone out there that can check my
theory?

Maybe the settings got deleted during the patch. Follow these
directions and see if they work again:

• Using "Flash Help" to help make flash game?

Hello,
I've noticed the other day that in Flash, the "Flash Help (F1)" found under "Help" is licensed under "Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License". The resources found on adobe.com in the Flash Development Center is also licensed with this.
The license state:
" You are free:

* to Remix — to adapt the work

I'm trying to learn flash so I can make flash games. I plan to get them sponsored by game portals and attach them to MochiAds--so technically this would be commercial, yes?
So does this mean I CAN'T use "Flash Help" or any of the resources found in adobe's Flash Development Center to learn how to use actionscripts?
Of course I don't plan to bluntly copy-paste codes, but it would be nice if I could adapt and learn how things work. Sometimes I get stuck and I need a reference... The last thing I'd want is to get into some copyright trouble =/
Sorry if this post is out of place. I tried to ask in Customer Support days ago but I get the feeling that they've ignored me.
Any extra advices are welcome.
Thank you,
Jane

What is with all the folks asking "copyright" questions lately? Are you all in some class or something? I am not a copyright lawyer so don't take anything I say as the absolute truth, but I have had a long standing interest in these issues...
Anyways copyright is not an absolute right, there is an important part of copyright law called "fair use" and it is important. Of course it is also the source of a lot of disagreements and law suits...
A clear case of infringement would be if you tried to just take the Flash help and publish your own "learn actionscript" help book or website.
But given that the help documentation is meant to teach you how to use the product it seems that it would be clearly within fair use to use it to learn how to use the product.
And while the US courts have not been particularly intelligent about technical innovation -- often granting patents and copyright to very basic code, while not protecting truly innovative and clever invention -- the argument that the basic instantiation of a class and invocation of its methods, properties, and events, is pretty clearly the only way to do these things. Adobe would have no reason -- in fact they would have quite the opposite -- to pursue a claim against somebody who used actionscript.
Given the absurdity of the US courts (if here is where you be) just change the names of the variables from the samples and you are most likely fine since it would confuse them.

• Flash CS3 and Filter problem

Ok. So I have a file that was originally created with Flash
8. The file was opened in Flash 9 and published. The problem is
that the text that I have in there is being cut off when published
(publish preview only, The full publish works fine so far). I've
narrowed it down to being a problem with the filters that are used.
I'm using a basic drop shadow on the static text.
More specifically, when I publish using Flash 7, filters are
not supported and they are dropped out and the entire word shows.
When I publish in Flash 8 or 9 with filters turned on, the words
are cut off. For example the word "connection", when a filter is
applied, all that publishes is "connecti". The o and n are gone.
And if I change the settings on that drop shadow filter, the word
is cut off in a different place than before, sometimes cutting a
letter in half. When I delete the filter and publish in 8 or 9, the
entire word shows again. Also, I can edit the blurX or Y, or the
strength or distance and it will sometimes show the entire word.
But when I do this to other words, it creates a problem on those
words. If I then go and edit the settings back or to different
numbers, cutoff happens once again.
This is very inconsistent and makes working with filters
difficult since I can't preview what I've done without doing a full
publish. I've converted the words to movie clips and so far have
not had the same problem, however, I don't want to add movie clips.
So this basically looks like a glitch with this new version of
Flash. I sure hope that someone at Adobe sees this post and might
look into the problem.
I'm on an Intel based MacBook Pro. If anyone has run into
this problem, please let me know if you have found there to be a
solution rather than a work around. Thanks to Anyone who can help.
And once again, this only appears to be a problem when I do a
publish preview, not a full publish.
Tobin

Thanks; thats helpful.
What's going on is that the filter is being reused for your
text instances.
Flash does automatic associations between frames to see where
some objects
should be instances of or related to the objects in the frame
before it. In
your case, since each of your frames have a single static
text field in the
same depth (one spot above the jump in button), and since
they all use the
same drop shadow filter with the same settings, Flash will
reuse that exact
same filter for each of the objects in consecutive frames at
those depths
assuming they are the same object. What this amounts to is
the bounding box
for the first text+filter combination being used for all
others. You can
see this more clearly if you move the "Love" text to be at
the beginning of
the sequence and then test your movie.
What can you do? Here are a few options (though only a few
may work in your
situation):
- include one frame between each text field
- on every other text field, modify a property of the filter,
either
adjusting the strength by a value of 1, changing the quality,
or something
not visible but enough to make Flash recognize it as a
different filter
- in a layer under every other textfield place an invisible
object. This
should force every other text field to be at a higher depth
thereby
preventing Flash from assuming they are the same object as
the one before
it.
- place each text field in a movie clip thereby separating
the filters from
the same timeline (or, technically, just every other text
field would be
necessary)
- change your text to dynamic text. These will be treated as
separate
instances (or at least Flash will be wise enough not to be so
static in its
application of the filter). You may need to be sure to embed
your fonts for
anti-aliasing
In the mean time I will officially log a bug. Though Flash is
"technically"
doing what it thinks is best, its not working out very well
for this case.

• Flash Drag and Drop Template in Captivate. *HELP*

Good morning.
I am attempting to use the drag and drop learning interaction
that comes pre-packaged with Flash CS3 and import it into Captivate
for use in a Captivate based e-learning exercise.
I create the drag and drop just fine in Flash, and it looks
perfect when I publish it in Flash, etc.
When I attempt to use the EXACT same SWF in Captivate,
however, it does not work. I can move the drags around the screen,
but they will not "drop" where they are supposed to.
Thinking maybe I broke the template, I went ahead and just
imported it 100% unchanged from Flash into Captivate (without me
messing around with it changing things around) and it does the
exact same thing.
I have successfully used my own homemade flash "widgets" in
Captivate, to include like click and reveal type interactions...for
whatever reason, though, I can't get this one to work, even though
I know it works perfectly in Flash.
The .swf file was developed using ActionScript 2.0 in Flash
and I tried publishing it with Flash 9 and Flash 8 as the setting,
both do the same thing.
Help!!!?
Thanks.
Rob

Hi R
Note that the Border simply adds space to the project so the
playback controls aren't covering part of your movie. Assuming you
want that to continue AND have a playback control, you might resize
the project so the playback control is included in the main movie
as well as being placed in an area that doesn't possibly obscure
any screen activity.
Cheers... Rick

• Newbie problems installing Flash 11 and windows 7/SWF issues-PLEASE HELP!

I am VERY new at Dreamweaver (llike four days in) - my church has a website & they need someone to take it over so I'm trying to help out while teaching myself something new.
I was doing okay til now. I downloaded a free template to play with so as not to mess up their real site just yet. I was able to get the majority of the site up except for the top part with flash. Error message says: "this page contains some SWF objects that may not work properly in the most recent versions of IE. Dreamweaver cannot convert them to SWF markups. Please delete each of them and insert again" This mesage comes up on the index.html, index-1.html, and index-2.html pages.
I deleted & re-typed everything that had an SWF in it (then realized maybe I only needed to do the ones with the .swf extension, duh on me!) but I'm still getting a gray box with the "f" inside.
Additionally, I keep having to re-install Flash because it says I have to use version 10 or higher - the browserlab worked during the online lessons offered by Adobe, but now it won't work at all! I installed Flash 11 more times than I can count but it still won't work, yet when I go to my Programs flash it's installed twice - once as a 64 bit and once without. I'm assuming one of those can go.
I'm familiar with HTML and have created smaller websites using templates on sites like Yahoo Business, Wix and Office Live and thought I could handle this, but it's really stumping me, thought there'd be a learning curve and trial/error but WOW! Much respect to all you web designers out there, this stuff is no joke!
If anyone could please help me fix this problem and dumb your answer down as much as possible cuz I'm admittedly very lost! I'm worried that I'll have the same problem with the church site because they want some flash aspects. Did several internet searches & couldn't decipher the programmer jargon, nor could figure out if I was doing the suggested fixes correctly.
Thanks in advance for the help from anyone! I have a brand new computer, dell xps15 only 3 weeks old, so it's not the computer!

FYI: Dreamweaver questions are better answered in DW's General Discussion Forum.
http://forums.adobe.com/community/dreamweaver/dreamweaver_general?view=discussions
Older versions of DW used an Active-X JavaScript to initialize Flash in IE browsers. Adobe later switched to a different script in CS4 and again in CS5 and CS5.5 which uses SWF Object Replacement. I suspect your Template was made with an older version of Flash & DW which is why you're getting the nag screens.
Option 1: Preview the original template pages in browsers. If it works, ignore the DW error messages.
Option 2: Rebuild the Template by stripping all Flash object and embed code and removing links to any Flash supporting scripts. Then re-insert your media. Insert > Media > Flash...

• Help on rollOver and publishing work

hi
it's hwa-jun again.
This topic needs help on rollOver problem and about
publishing work.
Everytime I check mouse interaction with certain sprite using
rollOver, director checks by the sprite's bounding box. How
do I make it checks
by pixels, to make the sprite react when my mouse is over
the sprite's pixel, not around it's bounding box?
I've done a simple game, now I want to publish it into
a stand alone application with protected casts. It didn't
turn out good the first time I tried. I'm gonna read more help and
retry. Is there any technical issue related to this problem? Oh
yah, I also had a problem with the
fullscreen setting. The application is not "fully
fullscreen" and I can see my project's title bar. How am I supposed
to do with that?
Please anyone post a helping reply. Thank you.

Nope. Still not working.
Sorry for being stupid.. But it really is not working.
I read about the alpha threshold.. It seems that it is the
answer. But.. I still can't figure it out why it isn't working.

clikmouse = false;
I use javascript because I'm more familiar with it than
lingo. I've been coding ActionScript all this time and just a few
weeks ago I started learning director.
Back to my game project..
Usually I don't directly use score to put sprite. I use the
method "makeScriptedSprite". Is there a problem with that?
about my bitmap.. It is a png file with transparent
background. I export the files from Flash. Because its background
is already transparent, I leave the ink setting to Copy. I got a
nice result with the image on the score.. except the part with the
rollOver. I was thinking.. maybe it's the problem with my
bitmap?

• Urgent: Flash design in published html and swf damaged after few more steps

hi everyone, i really need your help and really appreciate your quick reply! my flash design crashes! i published everytime i finished few steps. first few publications in html/ swf were okay, but after a few new steps the things all went wrong: the button went missing, the whole did not stop at frame1 as in my action script, some of the images went missing... i then deleted new steps hoping to get the thing back to normal, but it remained. after every futile effort i did (restarted pc, republished, saved as...), i suspected that there are BUGS whether in flash or in my pc, i did an experiment by simply creating a new layer and inserting an image in the layer, i published, and this time all the images has gone! Can i send you the corrupted flash design for better explanation? I wish to hear from you soonest as i'm very urgent rushing for a project to pass up today! Thanks in advance!

Perhaps the best lesson you can learn from this is to save often and give the saved file a new name, fla_version1, fla_version2, etc.
You want to be able to go back to a previous version so you don't lose it all.
Best wishes,

There is nothing wrong with your Dell, it will work fine with any MacbookPro. I have been using Dell displays for over 12 years with many different Mac models. I have two 21" Ultra Sharp displays working side by side to design a Keynote presentation right now.
The issue your having is with the way Keynote takes control of the video output to both displays, it sends the presentation signal to one and the presenter display to the other, this is set up in;
Keynote preferences > Presenter display.
If you want to show a wesite or another app on either display, use application switcher:
press the the command key on the keyboard, then the tab key; a row of applications will show what applications are running, choose which one you want to show. Use command > tab to return to Keynote.

• Windows 8.1 not recognizing Adobe Flash Player and Adobe help not helpful

I have a new laptop with Windows 8.1 64 bit. I tried to view a video and it said I did not have flash player. I went to download adobe flash player and your website said I had it intergrated into 8.1 and that it was either disabled, not the right version or that active X filters needed to be clear. I followed all instructions. Flash was installed with the 8.1 64 bit version. Flash was enabled for all websites and I cleared the active X filter and I still get told that I don't have install flash because it is intergrated and but it does not work. Please help I am in a cycle where Adobe is not helping just sending me in a circle. Thank you

Your problems aren't with Adobe or Flash Player. They're with Internet explorer 11 and Microsoft.
IE11 (Windows 7, 8 & 8.1) has been an abomination since its release October 18, 2013. Yahoo, Facebook, BBC, ESPN and dozens of other sites and domains have had trouble recognizing the Browser. If the site doesn't recognize the browser, it won't recognize any plugins in the browser, including Flash Player. Microsoft was made aware of the problems by millions of users within hours of the release, and so far they've shown no sign that they intend to fix it anytime soon. Their recommendation is to enable Compatibility View for affected pages. Two problems with that are that it's had only limited success, and you must enable it manually for each affected page. Basically, they're telling you to "pretend" you're not using IE11.
I'm not big on "pretending", and I recommend actually using something different. Something that works where IE11 won't.
Firefox (from Mozilla)
Chrome (from Google)
Safari (from Apple)
Opera (from Opera)
ANY of those will work where IE isn't recognized, and they use the Flash Player Plug-in (for other browsers), except for Chrome, which has its own plugin embedded in by Google.

• Help!! Flash CS3 and CS4 "Test Movie" very slow on OS X

This is a problem that, having read many forums, affects a
very large amount of people, though Adobe doesn't care at all. It
only affects OS X users. I know that it has been addressed many
times in different forums, but I never actually stumbled across
anyone having found a solution.
When I use Flash CS3, and I make any animation, even the
simplest tween, and I preview it with Test Movie, the result I get
is an extremely slow playback. Something like half the FPS it
should be.
However, when I export the SWF and preview it in the external
Flash Player or in a browser, it's just fine and fast.
Another interesting thing is that in CS3, when I open the
Help panel, the problem with Test Movie only happens like 20% of
the time. In that case, it only gets solved if I restart or Log Out
at least. I have no idea why the Help panel being open solves the
problem, this only shows that this is probably a little graphic
user interface bug, or something similar, that could be solved very
very easily.
In Flash CS4, there is no Help panel, so there is no solution
to the problem.
It would be nice to be able to press Cmd + Enter to see the
movie, and not have to do File > Export > bla bla bla, open
Finder, Find the SWF, double click it, wait for the browser to
open... etc...
I have a brand new 2.5 GHz MacBook Pro, and Test Movie runs
faster on my 900MHz Pentium III PC!! Funny...
Here are some links I found about this problem:
http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-878
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb407896
http://www.kirupa.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-258991.html
This is quite ridiculous, and on Adobe's Support page, the
solution is "Do not use Test Movie."
And the funny thing is that they didn't even bother to fix
this in CS4...
So basically if something doesn't work, Adobe's solution is
"Don't use it."
I guess they're right!
Please, tell me if anyone has or does not have this problem
or knows anything about it!
Thanks,
Mate

Thanks,
Mate
