Flash, Hulu, Youtube on an old Titanium powerbook

Hi - I have a friend who has an old Powerbook Ti from 2002 that has OS X 10.3.9 (I believe it's Panther) on it. It has all of the updates from apple software update.
She wants to be able to view videos from Hulu, Youtube, etc. but finds that the viewing is choppy. I looked into downloading the most recent version of Flash, but it says that it is not supported with this older software. Is there a way to find an older version of flash that will work.
What is my best course of action here? to update to Leopard OS X 10.5.6? Will this older hardware suppport the most recent version of the OS? Would any hardware components...i.e. the older graphics card, etc. be the problem?
Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated,.
Regards,
M.

I don't remember the specs for that laptop, but I think a video card upgrade would be necessary. The latest version of the flash player works best with a minimum 64mb video card. Also ram upgrade and an update to at least 10.4.11 would probably help, but it won't be playing video like the newer macs. I have a powermac that runs a 500mhz G4, ATI radeon 64mb, w. 1GB of ram and it depends on the quality of video. The HD videos will be still be choppy, but lower quality ones run fine.

We have an old titanium PowerBook that will easily connect to any WiFi cafe or hotel network, but will not connect to our AirPort Extreme network. What gives.
When the Apple Tec. installed our network for our 3 iMAXs, he couldn't it to connect either. Of course our two iPads have no trouble connecting.
We are also having trouble getting it to upgrade from OS 10.5.8 to 10.6, even though I have a Snow Leopard up date family pack.

What is your Wireless Security setting on the network?  Since you are running Leopard, I may not have the desired answer, but some of the Airport-equipped laptops, like the TiBooks, are said not to support all of the settings.  I have an AE network which supports b and g, with "WPA2 Personal" settings and the TiBooks connect with that one OK with 811.b Airport.
Oh, and no way to upgrade beyond 10.5.8 Leopard for PPC machines like the Titanium G4 Powerbooks, as 10.6 and above require Intel processors.
EDIT: I didn't notice this, but the TiBooks may be connecting with WPA encryption on my network, as I have the following display on my settings:

  • Possible to switch RAM out of old Titanium PB into a G4 iMac (2003-ish)?

I have two computers. I want to know if it's possible to take the RAM chip out of one and put it into the other.
The "donor" computer is an old Titanium Powerbook G4. It has a 128mb SDRAM chip built in, and a 256 SDRAM that was added later.
The "recipient" computer is a 2003-ish era iMac G4 (the kind with the white hemispheric base and the flexible flat-panel screen attached).
Will it be possible to take that 256mb chip out of the Titanium PB and put it into the iMac G4? Or is it the wrong kind/size/whatever kind of chip? Needless to say, I would follow all the proper instructions and procedures for doing so, if I were to do it.
The reason for this, not that it's important, is that the Titanium PB is just about shot, and it ready to be parted out -- it has a plethora of serious defects and problems that just aren't worth it to fix. The iMac is nice and working fine, but only has 128 RAM at the moment. Thought I might as well cannibalize the Titanium while I can before selling it.
    Thanks.

Ooops, sorry, I posted this in the wrong iMac forum. I thought I was in the older iMac forum -- this is the new iMac forum.

  • Webcam for Titanium Powerbook

My mother is using my old Titanium Powerbook. I would like to use Skype with her. She was told at an Apple Store that there are no webcams for this computer. Is this true? Is it a USB problem? Any ideas for a camera.
    Thanks
    Dean

I checked them out today at my Apple Store. The tech there said you could use ANY webcam with a Mac. Obviously delusional, at which point I stopped listening to him. The Logitech box says minimum 10.4.1 and G4 800Mhz processor. The Ti book may be just 400Mhz. What processor speed does your Ti book have? That may be why it won't work on the older books?
    Thanks again

I suggested adding a 512MB RAM module to whatever is presently in one of the slots, for a total of either 640MB or 784MB. This would make Tiger run noticeably better than it will with the bare minimum of 256MB, for a minimal investment. Tiger itself will cost just as much as Leopard (if not more), so in the interest of economy, I didn't recommend buying two 512MB modules to max out the machine's RAM.
There's no way to upgrade either the CPU or the GPU to anything faster, so if boosting the RAM and upgrading the OS, web browser, and browser plug-ins doesn't improve the video performance noticeably, at least the experiment won't have cost more than a couple of hundred dollars. I think the machine may be OK for your friend's purposes with those upgrades in place, but I can't guarantee that it will be.

  • Titanium PowerBook G4 info / demo QuickTime movie

    Weird Request:
I'm trying to find the old skool QuickTime movie about the Titanium PowerBook G4 when it first came out. The video featured Jonathan Ive talking about designing it, Phil Schiller was in it, some Genetics nerd was bragging about it, and some D.J. was talking about how great it was. It featured the Rain Dance song by Karl Jenkins. Anyone remember this thing or happen to have a copy of it in their QuickTime stash? I'd like the original QuickTime version, not a lame YouTube flash video file if possible. MANY thanks if you can help me out.

I used the Internet Archive to pull up the G4 TiBook page, and googled the file name for the movie. It's still on Apple's server, just buried. Mission accomplished!

  • Crackling/substandard sound in flash videos (YouTube etc) regardless of video quality setting.

    Hi all,
I hope you can help! Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, I'm struggling to find the best place to put this.
    1. a summary of your issue
Crackling/substandard sound in flash videos (YouTube etc) regardless of video quality setting.
    2. the type of computer you use—Mac or PC?
    Desktop PC.
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, all updates installed.
    3. steps you've already taken to troubleshoot
The problem occurs after installing Adobe Flash Player 15 Plugin to any browser (I mainly use FireFox). It's listed as Adobe Flash Player 15 ActiveX when I installed it for Internet Explorer.
Before installing it, I can hear the videos fine but I am limited to a maximum of 720p quality on YouTube.
I removed my sound and graphics drivers, after restart Windows 7 decides it will install them again but as the generic/universal ones. No change.
I've heard that because I have the Windows Aero theme activated, I need to disable hardware acceleration - tried this in various ways:
    a) Generic PnP monitor Troubleshoot tab - Change Settings button is greyed out (whether or not I have the real/generic/universal graphics drivers installed). Can't find a way through nVidia control panel to do this either.
    b) Disabled hardware acceleration in FireFox - no change.
    c) Found on your forum here that I can go to a page which will check my Flash version, in theory I could right-click it, hit Settings and disable hardware acceleration there - no "Settings" option in right-click menu. Seems the page has changed.
I can't seem to find a way to interface with Flash directly to disable hardware accelerattion - if this is indeed the solution.
Regardless of Windows Aero theme, I've got it on basic theme now and still the same problem.
I recently reformatted and re-installed my PC, it was working fine before I did this (maybe I had an old Flash release installed?).
I'm at my wit's end... please help!

Sorry, it's all sorted now. After re-installing the sound drivers, decided to tinker with the settings one by one. I had my Creative sound card in Game Mode, thus it was assuming 2.1 speakers aka headphones. Put it in Entertainment Mode and it recognised all the 5.1 speakers for flash videos. Doh!

  • G4 Titanium Powerbook being offered

    Hello,
I was looking to purchase a 15 inch G4 Titanium Powerbook from a classmate of mine. I do know that it is an older model, being that there are technology advances made every year. The specs are below. He is offering to sell it for $500.00 Is this a good deal? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Currently it has Mac OS X Version 10.3.9 Panther 1Ghz processor, 512mb Ram, ( can be 2G,) 60 GB Hard Drive.....
Included in the sale are 2 power adapters and two batteries.

    Hi ciscokidbj21,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion Forums!
That models specs and an est. current value can be found at EveryMac.com's page Apple PowerBook G4 1.0 (Ti) Specs (M8859LL/A). They est. the current value of it at $700-850. Personally, I agree with eww's response above and think you could do better with a little shopping around if there is any problems with the PowerBook at all.
EveryMac's site certainly is a good general reference for prices but tends to be on the high side in my opinion. It will suffice though to help compare value from model to model though.
    hope that helps some,

edit: You said "the 1Ghz processor is slow isn't it?
Well, it is fast enough to run the latest OS, Leopard 10.5 though at the low end of its performance most likely. Todays desktop Macs are pushing 3Ghz so I would have to say in the near future even a 1Ghz machine will be considered quite slow. Of course this comes from one who uses an old iMac G3 350 10.3.9 (though I'm still happy but not as happy as if I had a iMac 3Ghz machine...lol!
Also, that model you are looking to purchase was the first PowerBook to come standard with a superdrive capable of burning dvd's which is a big plus if it is in good working order.

  • 500Mhz Titanium PowerBook power issue (won't start up)

My 500Mhz Titanium PowerBook is having power issues, and I can't tell what's causing the problem.
We usually default to using the adapter because the old battery only holds a charge for about 30-45 minutes or so...This isn't really a problem because we only use it around the house.
Earlier today, my wife said it didn't recognize AC power, but when moved to a different outlet, it did. I came along later and moved it to the previous outlet, and again, it didn't recognize AC. I then moved it to a third outlet, and it still didn't begin charging.
After a few minutes of battery power, it went to reserve. I still tried a fourth outlet to no avail, then just shut it down at about 12% reserve. Now I can't get it to start up at all.
I've disconnected everything, tried the "60-second rest," and resetting the PMU, but the PB still won't start up.
    Any suggestions?
On an semi-related note, I read this article regarding identification of power adapters:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75448#922-4323
...and I'm puzzled as to why Apple doesnt refer to the adapter model number but instead uses some other ID which I can find no mention of on my adapter. This "yo-yo" adapter has "Model No. M7332" imprinted on it and according to the article, as far as I can tell, Apple refers to it as a 922-4323 with a 922-4529 cord--numbers I can find no reference to on the adapter or cord. Am I missing something?
    500Mhz PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Hi, Sluggo. Remove the main battery, plug the AC adapter into an outlet that causes the adapter's ring light to come on, and leave the powerbook that way to charge the internal backup battery for at least four hours (overnight is easy). Then put the main battery back in, give that some time to charge up at least partially, and then try starting the PB (still on AC power). Post back with results.
A weak or dead backup battery can prevent a Tibook from starting at all. A weak or dead main battery may, in some cases, divert all charging energy away from the backup battery until the main battery is fully charged — or indefinitely, if the main battery is no longer capable of taking a charge. The main battery charge-level indicator on the menu bar is usually wildly inaccurate by the time the battery is only able to deliver ~30 minutes of ordinary working time. Whatever percentage it reports is probably untrustworthy and may be pure moonshine.
With respect to different outlets producing different results in the adapter, that isn't related to the backup battery. Try a different, known-good AC adapter, if possible, and see whether it behaves the same way yours does when connected to your various electrical outlets. If its behavior is identical (not likely but possible), read the two articles linked below and consider getting an uninterruptible power supply unit to condition your AC power, which may be noisy.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302461
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=32155
If a known-good adapter behaves normally and as expected when connected to all your outlets, replace your adapter.

  • Is it still possible to upgrade CPU on a G4 400MHz Titanium Powerbook?

I have a Titanium PowerBook G4 model (M7952) with a 17 inch screen, originally purchased in 2001. Over recent years I have successfully upgraded the hard drive to 128GB and the memory to 1GB SDRAM.
However, I have recently purchased Leopard and attempted to upgrade the system without first checking -and subsequently discovering - that my CPU speed is inadequate (currently only 400MHz, wheras required minimum for Leopard is 867MHz).
If anyone can advise me whether it is still possible to upgrade the processor on this particular model to the required specification for running Leopard - my initial searches have appeared to indicate this may not be possible - I would be very grateful.
    Thanks, Steve

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Even if it is possible, you won't be improving the system bus of the machine, so there will always be a bottleneck. Also software updates may not perform right, as the system is really only designed for built-in processor 867 Mhz or higher G4s, and not upgraded CPUs. Upgrade CPU support has to come entirely from the CPU vendor that supplies the upgrade for firmware updates, and compatibility. Essentially you will be creating yourself a jalopy. 10.4.11 is the max that will ron a 400 Mhz G4 reliably.

  • Upgrade to usb 2.0 with my titanium powerbook?

If I add a USB 2.0 card to the pci slot in my titanium powerbook, is it bad to often disconnect it and reconnect it? I say this because I want my new ipod touch to work, and it wont right now...but I dont want a big thing sticking out of the side of my computer when I am carrying it around. So could I just connect the card whenever I wanted to sync the ipod? thanks.

Hi, bsgroup. Yes, you can remove a USB 2.0 adapter from your PCMCIA slot whenever you aren't using it. There will be no ill effects at all. Just don't remove it while a USB device is connected to it.
However, you should make sure your iPod Touch, about which I know nothing, does not require a built-in USB 2.0 port. The ports on a USB 2.0 adapter card can't supply as much power to connected, bus-powered USB devices as your Powerbook's built-in ports can. I'm not an iPod owner, but it's my understanding that when an iPod is connected to a computer's USB port, it draws its power from the computer rather than from its own battery, and the computer simultaneously charges the iPod's battery. If too little power is available from the port, the iPod won't function properly or its battery won't charge, or both. I don't know enough to tell you what will happen when you connect your iPod to an adapter card. You should post in the appropriate iPod forum and ask others who are more familiar with your iPod model whether any of them have used one with a USB adapter card in a Powerbook that doesn't have built-in USB 2.
I recently bought a USB 2 portable hard drive enclosure and a USB 2 adapter card of the kind you're considering. I was careful to buy a drive enclosure that came with two cables: a USB data cable and a usb power cable, so the drive is able to connect to two USB ports: one for both power and data, and the second for additional power only. When I connect both cables to the two USB 2 ports on my adapter card, my drive (the original 60GB drive mechanism from my Tibook, which I recently replaced with a 120GB internal drive) doesn't get enough power to spin up and can't be used. If I connect the drive's data cable to one of the ports on the card, and the auxiliary power cable to one of my built-in USB 1.1 ports, the drive works perfectly. An iPod can't draw power from two ports, so it has to get whatever it requires from just one. That may or may not be possible using an adapter card. Go into the experiment with your eyes open, and please let us know how it works out for you.
I might mention that the card I bought cost me about $12-13 at a nearby CompUSA store, and bore the store's brand name. CompUSA is about to go out of business nationwide, and if there's a store near you, you might find some very attractive prices there.

I put my old acrobat back onto my machine (from a backup made before reformatting) but it wants the box serial number.  when I did that however, the replacement CS2 photoshop, etc, wouldn't work, so I had to install it again, but then, you guessed it - acrobat won't work again.

    Hello Alan,
Acrobat 7 is older version. Refer below link for more information and how to download.

I have been having this problem for the last couple of days now and it is really annoying. Whenever I watch a flash video like on youtube or espn my computer freezes up and the audio will make a loud buzzing sound. I have attached a video with the post so you can see what happens. I don't have problems with anything else except this. I also get this error no matter what browser I use. I have system restored my PC as far as I can go, and I've ran a ton of scans and driver update checks and nothing seems to work.

merci a tous pour les nombreuses réponse. j'ai dû mal a les lire vue que je ne lit que le français. je vous remercié encore une fois amicalement. Blanchette 2.
