Flash in AW sound plays but no picture

I've googled for this but haven't found any definitive
answer.
I have a subroutine which plays flash files through the flash
xtra. It works fine but for the 3 files in which there has been an
mp3 embedded (to time the animation to the sound) - the sound plays
fine but i get one line of the picture only near the bottom and it
doesn't play the anim.
I have tried the same procedure with a fresh file - just
having the flash xtra and loading the anim into it directly with
"browse..." but with the same result. The anims play fine from the
media folder tey are located in, playing in Firefox or IE.
Any suggestions? Using Flash MX, AW 6.5 and Mp3s.
Thanks in advance
Helen

Once it goes out on NNTP there's no updating it .... I'll
only ever see your
original post. That web interface is too slow for my sanity!

When you view the Flash file as standalone ... outside a
browser, then
right-click and Show All, what do you see?
Wild guess ... maybe you have something off at the top of the
Flash movie
that's pushing it down the screen???

• Published for iOS, sound plays but no screen.

Hi,
I have completed a new game that runs great on Android - created using Flash Builder 4.5 and Flash Professional. I got all our Apple stuff out of the way and then also compiled for iOS. Then I deployed to my son's iPod Touch 5 via TestFlightApp.com. He installed and ran and we get the sound but no screen. I'd really like to finish debugging and then deploy this app for both droid and iOS at the same time (in the next few days). Can someone tell me why the SWF's that are the UI of the app are playing sound but not showing up on screen? How can I fix this problem?
BTW, please forgive the fact that the site is under dev (will be completed and polished before go live), but you can get some idea of what the game is about at our web site: headshotgame.com.
Best,
Al

Ooops, spoke too soon...
After we recompiled all our FLA's to SWF's and added them as assets to our Flash Builder project, it did not work again (SWF sound plays but no graphics display). So, we went back to the earlier test solution and it did not work either?!?
Finally, we compiled using the quick compile selection of Flash Builder. The intro screen showed up all the sudden! But, none of the buttons work and you can't navigate to any other of the screens. Sadly, this is not answered and I don't know whether this belongs in the Flash Builder or the Flex forum as I don't know what is causing the problem.
All of this works perfectly on Android. Same code on iOS does not work. Perhaps it's the fact that I'm testing on an iPod touch with iOS5?
I have people waiting to test this app and help me get it live but I can't seem to get it to run on iOS. Please let me know if I can provide any other info to help you help me.
Thanks!
A summary of our problem:
We have multiple SWF's that are compiled in Flash Pro that make up a larger mobile app that we built in Flash Builder.
We add the Flash Pro SWF's to Flash Builder as assets of the project and use the Navigator to move between them with event listeners bubbling up from the buttons that are in the SWF's.
There are many SWF's - most screens have multiple SWF's on them.
All of this works very well on Android.
The same project compiled for iOS creates an IPA file but when the IPA file is deployed to the device, none of the screens show up but the sound plays.
There is only one way to get a (the first) screen to show on the device which is to set Flash Builder packaging method to "fast". Yet, getting the screen to show is useless as it won't allow you to navigate (and the SWF behaves differently in other ways compared to Android).
I am testing on iPod and will recruit other iOS device users to test as well. The iPod I am testing on is an iPod touch with iOS 5.

• Itunes video appears to be playing, but no picture no sound

Help...new to Mac. Just purchased this from a friend who didn't use it for anything but business. Macbook Air. Loaded iTunes, Authorized the computer on my account. Then tried to watch videos in itunes. It launhes to a widescreen view which is grey where the picture should be....no video or sounds. But when you move the cursor to the area to press play of pause or other actions...it shows it as playing. When I click on the chapter area, it shows the pictures of the chapters as it should. Though clicking on them does not bring video to the main screeen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have the same problem. I have a 30gb Video Ipod. Was lying in bed listening, started changing songs, next thing I know it is no longer playing. Everything appears normal, makes clicking sound, you can change the volume and the white noise gets louder but no sound. Hooked up to many earphones as well as a fm transmitter, same thing. Tried resetting didn't work. I let the battery run out, than I hooked it up to my computer and fully charged it. Music played through itunes. Disconnected from my computer and it actually played. The next day I tried playing it again, and no longer worked. Haven't been able to get it to work since. Tried erasing all the music and resetting to normal factory settings, didn't work. Any help would be great!.

• Quicktime email attachment, sound plays but no video.

I sent a 4.2 MB Quicktime Video as a attachment to my email address.
I received it in my iPad inbox. When playing the video I heard the sound but there was no picture.
Also, can I save a video sent by email in my iPad.

I did some research and the paid and free version are exactly the same except the free version puts a advertisement.
Thanks for the extra info about File Sharing in iTunes to Add movies from computer to iPad.
Although I like my iPad (which is really just a toy) there is nothing on the market that compares to my Dell Latitude Tablet.
I will not put itunes on my PC untill Apple makes their Pro Versions (especially QuickTime) for free and make them work just as well on a PC as a Mac.
I had to put Quicktime on my PC to run Toon Boom which I paid $1,000.00 for because Toon Boom would not run without Quicktime.
I regret very much buying Toon Boom for that reason although it is a excellent program which is used by the Disney Group to make their movies.
The QuickTime video I wanted to play on my iPad was made with Toon Boom.
In the past ten years I never had a version of iTunes or QuickTime that did not have at least one unfixable issue.
Thanks again!

• Black screen while sound plays - but works in VLC

I got some .h.264 QuickTime .mov files, they open up and usually show the first frame, then it is black, but the sound continues.
I've tried converting them to mp4 or other files from QuickTime player and that doesn't help.
I'm on QuickTime X, Snow Leopard here.

I got some .h.264 QuickTime .mov files, they open up and usually show the first frame, then it is black, but the sound continues... I've tried converting them to mp4 or other files from QuickTime player and that doesn't help.
Generally speaking, if the QT player cannot play the content, then QT apps or third party apps that rely on the embedded QT structure/components are usually unlikely to be able to convert them properly unless the issue is simply one of trying to play too much data on an old and underpowered system. Since you say they play correctly in VLC, try using VLC to convert or re-pack the data or try HandBrake for the conversion.
As to the original source of the problem, there is insufficient information to make any guesses at this time. For instance, QT applications do not normally like proprietary or "enhanced" versions of MPEG-4/AVC content which hybridize features/capabilities of higher profiles/levels in lower profile/level combinations.

• On startup, start up sound plays but has blank dark (however lit) screen

hey apple community, this is my first question here.
i have an issue regarding my macbook pro 13" retina display that id purchased only a few months ago. after putting it to sleep the night before, my macbook had a blank screen when i'd opened it the next morning. i forced shut down the pro, and performed many things that id been told to do after a quick search, such as doing an SMC reset, and also resetting the PRAM. a random time afterwards, i booted up the macbook to see if it it'd randomly fix - and surprisingly, it booted up normally and then i used it for about an hour, putting it asleep once more to use it at a later time. however, again, my macbook does the same thing - playing the startup tune when i turn it on and leaving a blank screen. there is a backlight, however, where the screen (although remaining dark and black) does have a backlight to it, and also the apple logo on the back of my mac is lit. also, the keyboard works to some degree while my macbook is "on", and turning on/off the caps lock toggles the green dot.
if anyone has any knowledge on how to fix this matter, i would greatly appreciate it. unfortunately, the closest apple store to me does not have any genius bar appointments til next week and i need this working by tomorrow.
thank you.

• Flash 9 button sound bug? Sound in Over frame plays again when clicked

I've been using Flash for years and I've only just noticed this problem, I guess because I haven't had much call for noisy buttons for a while. In the olden days (FlashMX and earlier) I swear that I could make a button, put a keyframe on the Over frame and attach an Event sound to it, put a keyframe on the Down frame and attach a different Event sound to it and the first sound would ONLY play when the button was rolled over and the second sound would ONLY play when the button was clicked. I just tried doing the same in Flash 9 and when I click on the button, not only does the Down sound play, but the Over sound also plays simultaneously. They're both in the same layer, but the "Over" sound only has its keyframe and the very next keyframe under "Down" is the Down sound.
Switching the sync to Start makes no difference. Synching with Stop on the "Down" frame for the "Over" sound sort of works if there is no Down sound, but there's still a brief snippet of the sound. If I add the Down sound back on new layer, the original problem returns. Of course Streaming doesn't work at all.
This is incredibly maddening, especially since I found this old tutorial on Kirupa that shows exactly what I want, and what I can no longer get in Flash 9, apparently:
http://www.kirupa.com/developer/flash5/buttonsound.htm
I've attached a demo .swf.
Thanks in advance

maijakg,
You've stumbled onto a good one! If memory serves me right, the Kirupa article indeed shows how this used to work (Kirupa is always top notch), but this behavior changed in one of the recent versions of Flash Flayer. Not sure now if it was 8, 9, or what. It should be easy enough to pinpoint with one of the legacy Flash Players at http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14266.
This issue is easy enough to address with ActionScript, which may not be what you want to hear. Still, it's an option. I'll go into that in just a minute. If you want to stick with the button timeline ... well, I'm finding that this proves to be a challenge (and it really shouldn't be). I notice, for example, that I can create an empty movie clip symbol, put my Over sound in frame 1 of that symbol (Event sound), and then drag that symbol into the Over frame of the button.
That does keep the audio from repeating when I actually click the button -- that is, when I enter the Down frame -- so that does work. You can put your Down audio directly into the button's Down frame, but ... using this approach, you'll hear the Over sound when you release the mouse, even if the mouse hasn't left the button. That's because the movie-clip–with-audio in the Over frame is summoned again when the mouse lifts, and that naturally causes the movie clip in that frame to play its audio again.
Here's how you can do exactly what you want using ActionScript.
// ActionScript 2.0
var overSound:Sound = new Sound();
overSound.attachSound("sndOver");
var downSound:Sound = new Sound();
downSound.attachSound("sndDown");
btn.onRollOver = overHandler;
btn.onPress = pressHandler;
function overHandler():Void {
overSound.start();
function pressHandler():Void {
downSound.start();
Here's what's going on. In the first two lines, I've declared a variable -- arbitrarily named overSound -- and set it to an instance of the Sound class. At this point, the variable overSound contains all the rights and priviledges of a sound object, because that's exactly what it is. If you look in the Sound class entry of the ActionScript 2.0 Language Reference, you'll see that it has an attachSound() method (methods are things an object can do; they're basically verbs). So in the second line, you'll see that I'm attaching an audio file from the library. In ActionScript 2.0, this happens by way of a linkage identifier, which you can get to by right-clicking a sound and selecting Properties. In the dialog box that opens, you'll see an "Export for ActionScript" checkbox. Select that, and you can type in your identifier, which is just a unique label. In this case, I used the same name as the variable (sndDown) -- only, the linkage identifier is referenced with quotes.
In the second pair of lines, the same thing happens, but with a different sound.
In the third pair of lines, I'm referencing the button symbol by way of an instance name. To give a button an instance name, select it in the timeline and then look at the Property inspector. You'll see an "instance name" input field. Here, my instance name is btn, but you could choose whatever makes sense for that button's purpose. In these two lines, I'm simply associating the Button.onRollOver event with one custom function (overHandler) and the Button.onPress event with another custom function (pressHandler). Events are something an object can react to, and you'll see events listed in class entries too. Because we're dealing with a button simple, the class in question is the Button class. When a rollover or press occurs ... I want these custom fuctions to be triggered.
Finally, the last few lines are the definitions for the custom functions. One, overHandler(), invokes the Sound.start() method on the overSound instance of the Sound class. The other, downHandler(), does the same for the downSound instance.
The mechanics of the AS3 version are slightly different, but the principles are the same. Instead of linkage identifers, AS3 has linkage classes. When you select that "Export for ActionScript" checkbox in an AS3 document, the identifier input field will be disabled. You'll enter an identifier-like value into the Class field, and the Base Class field will be filled in for you automatically with flash.media.Sound (just go with the default). After that, the code goes like this:
// AS3
var overSound:sndOver = new sndOver();
var downSound:Sound = new sndDown();
btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, overHandler);
btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, pressHandler);
function overHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
overSound.play();
function pressHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
downSound.play();
In this case, you don't need the attachSound() method anymore, because you're invoking the constructor function of each library sound itself (these are linkage classes, remember, and classes create objects directly). The events are managed the same in princple. Once again, each mouse event is associated with its corresponding custom function. In AS3, this happens via the addEventListener() method.
Finally, the custom functions invoke the Sound.play() method on each Sound instance. Remember, these are instances of the Sound class, even though their linkage classes are actually sndOver and sndDown: each of those inherits its functionality from the base class, which is Sound in both cases. Note that in AS3, the method that starts audio is play(), instead of start(). Just minor differences in syntax.
Granted, that's a lot to do -- in either version of the language -- just to associate a couple sounds with a button, but off the top of my head, it looks like scripting is the way it has to be done. If I'm wrong, I'd love to hear about it. Maybe there's a simpler workaround!

• VideoDisplay playing flv with sound but no picture...

Hi Everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help with an annoying problem that
isn't making much sense to me.... I have an mxml component that is
based on an HBox, which houses a single Video Display control. In
the main application file I add this component which houses the
Video Display control to a canvas using addChild. What I then do is
I play different flv files by containing each flv file name in an
array, and then bind the next flv name to the source of the Video
Display control in order to play the correct video... so in other
words...
<!---------------------------------------------------------------------->
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
[Bindable] private var _arrFLVs:Array = new Array("vid1.flv",
"vid2.flv", "vid3.flv");
[Bindable] private var _currentFLV:String;
[Bindable] private var _i:int;
public function init():void
_currentFLV = _arrFLVs[_i];
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:VideoDisplay width="398" height="282"
id="videoDisplay" autoPlay="true" source="flvs/{_currentFLV}" />
<!----------------------------------------------------------------------->
I have other functions which increment the _i variable. So
basically what happens is when the video has finished playing, an
event handler executes which is listening for the end of the video,
the event handler then executes another function which removes the
component with the video player from the canvas and adds a
different component to display a series of images, once the images
has finished cycling through what it needs to cycle through I
remove that image component and add the video component back onto
the canvas to display the next flv. This process repeats itself
once all videos has been shown and then starts over again. The
problem I'm experiencing is that every now and then when the video
is supposed to be played, it gets added successfully to the canvas
using addChild, the correct source gets assigned to the video
player, but i see no image when it starts playing. I hear sound,
but no picture. I know the correct source is being assigned to the
video player because I trace it before and while its playing the
video, aside from tracing the source, i hear the audio of the flv
currently playing so i know its the correct flv - only problem is
that there is no picture. The picture not displaying happens
randomly, so for example if the first 4 flv's have finished playing
the 5th won't show a picture although i hear the sound, then the
6th will work fine. When the entire process begins again, the 5th
will work fine, but the 6th and 7th flv won't. This is what totally
confuses me.
What I don't understand is if the correct source has been
assigned to the video display control and the correct flv starts
playing, why do i hear sound but no picture?
Could this be some sort of bug in the flash player? I'm using
Adobe Flash Player 9,0,28,0.
If anyone can provide me with some advice/opinions/idea to
give me some sort of clue that would be grand :).
Thanks for your time,
- Tony

I had this problem before. I found that if the VideoDisplay
component had not finished all inititialization functions before I
assigned the new flv, then I got sound with no video. Try listening
for creationComplete for your VideoDisplay component before you
assign the video source to see if that solves your problem.

I've just transferred all of my .mkv files onto my store TV + but most of them have sound but no picture?They play fine on my PC...
Also,anyway of changing the icon on the folder to the actual dvd cover on the store TV +?Sick of looking at yellow folders!!
Thanks..

Hi
Found the StorE TV+ specifications on this Toshiba page:
http://www.toshiba-multimedia.com/eu/store-external-hard-drives/tv-plus/
The Store TV+ supports the video formats:: MPEG1 (DAT, MPG), MPEG2 (VOB, MPG, TS/M2TS/TP TRP), MPEG4 (AVI, MP4, MKV), VC-1 (WMV), H.264 (AVI, MKV,MOV, MP4), RM/RMVB (RM/RMVB)
The MKV files are supported by MPEG4 and H.264 video format.
Are the files recorded in this formats?
How about playing other files i.e MPG or AVI?
Furthermore I would recommend checking the connection to the TV.
Here is a user manual which I found on the Toshiba page:
http://www.toshiba-multimedia.com/Global/Manuals/Store/Manuals/STORE_TVplus_User_Manual.pdf
It shows you how to connect the Store TV+ correctly.

Do your videos play in QuickTime Playerwhen you reveal one of them in the Finder with "File > Reveal > Original"? Try to open the revealed movie in QuickTime and see if it plays.
Check the format of the movie. You can see it in the Inspector in QuickTime Player from the "WIndow" menu: Window > Show Inspector.
iPhoto does not support all movie formats and codecs that QuickTime player can play, and not all frame rates.
See: Using AVCHD video with iPhoto '11
If the movie does not play in QuickTime Player either, install QuickTime 7 for more codecs.
