Flash in Safari results in extreme CPU overload

For some time now I've had the sense that my Macbook Pro has become increasingly slower with everything from word to browsing in safari to working on simple PSDs in Photoshop. I recently brought it in to repair but came back with an "everything is okay" hardware diagnostic.
Ever since I've been trying to figure out what might be the issue and doing a complete reinstall of Snow Leopard and all my Applications didn't seem to help one bit besides ruling out both as the culprits.
Recently it's become a real pain (laggy video, slow load, rainbow wheel...) watching just a single video on youtube / vimeo and after checking Activity Monitor revealing a ~120% CPU Usage for flash plugin I seem to have found the reason why my system bugs out! I did a bit of googling and saw that the recent Flash Player 10.2 should help alot on CPU usage so I installed that but little did it help.
Is anyone else out there having serious trouble with flash slowing down their Macbooks and even more important have a solution??

I think Flash is not working well with snow leopard. The flash development is really slow for mac os.
Here is my advice.
Uninstall Flash
Download and install the 64BITS beta version of Flash called Flash Square
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10_square.html
Disable Hardware Acceleration option in flash, you will save 20% CPU use. Check in activity monitor, and you will see the difference as soon as you disable Hardware acceleration option from Flash settings.
Personnally, i use Safari to watch Youtube through Flash Square. Since it is a 64 bits application. The application is asking less power from the CPU. The fan is also working less. It is great for a macbook. By the way i also disabled the Hardware acceleration option in Flash
Then, i know tihs application is not stable. So i use Google chrome for other FLash application as the Flash application is embedded in Chrome and it is stable 32bits application.
You will see the Youtube experience is INCREDIBLE with the new 64 BITS flash Square.
Good Luck.

  • Adobe Flash Player 11.5 r502 causes CPU overload

Every time I start my MacBook Air, the fans go to high speed and Adobe Flash Player causes the CPU to run at 300% until I quit that process. Version is 11.5 r502 which has a date 12/11/2012. Problem is that without Adobe Flash Player none of the videos on CNN will play. Is anyone else having this problem? Any fix? Thanks!

I'd recommend trying the troubleshooting steps outlined in this FAQ:
How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

  • CPU Overload (-10010) with Logic 9.0.2 and SL 10.6.2 after clean install

Whether using the demo song (Numbers Game), or a new song even with just a couple of instruments (EXS) and a single audio track I get a CPU overload -10010 or -1009 message sometimes every few seconds, sometimes every 30 minutes.
I thought perhaps a conflict with drivers or other software, so I have tried a clean install of SL10.6, updated to 10.6.2, loaded Logic Pro, updated to 9.0.2, and added NO OTHER SOFTWARE AT ALL, and used internal audio, still same problem.
This seems to be a bug in Logic or SL. What can I do?

This is no bug, your system is telling you that it cannot handle the full load of this song. Try Freezing tracks with heavy CPU-using plugins on them.

  • Flash Player (Safari Internet Plug-in) quit unexpectedly - yes, another one

I know there are a dozen posts similar to this - please trust I've read them all but can't get to a resolution. I am getting a "Flash Player (Safari Internet Plug-In) quit unexpectedly" message on every page with Flash content. This all started trying to download new audio for my kids' Tag reader books. It said I needed to update my Flash, so I did. It still didn't work, apparently the new version was too "new". But now, it's not working anywhere.
    I've tried the following suggestions:
Uninstalled Flash using uninstaller provided at adobe.com, and removed all Flash folders
Reinstalled very latest Flash & Safari (via the respective websites and not with "Software Update") with reboots & repair permissions between steps
Clear Safari Cache and delete Flash Cache folders
Installed an earlier version of Flash
Removed all contents of Internet Plug-Ins folder except the FlashPlayer.plugin
    Created a new user account
Tried using Firefox (didn't work there, and have now uninstalled it)
Using ClicktoFlash is not an option - my kids use Flash based websites all the time on this computer. I don't have the "flashing plug-in icon" issue a previous poster put up, so that resolution won't work.
I'm losing my mind, and am at hour 10 or so of this process. I would like to avoid reinstalling the OS if possible, and not quite sure when I'm at that point. Any further suggestions would be most appreciated!!
    Current situtation:
    Safari Version 5.0.3 (6533.19.4) - downloaded today
The only thing appearing in "Installed plug-ins" is Shockwave Flash 10.1 r102 — from file “Flash Player.plugin”. - downloaded today
Symptom: When I go to any page with Flash content, such as http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about I get the following error message:
Flash Player (Safari Internet Plug-In) quit unexpectedly

    Hi,
That could mean a problem with the startup disk.
    Launch Disk Utility /Applications/Utilities
Select MacintoshHD on the left then select the FirstAid tab. Click: Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, you will need to boot from your install disc to make repairs.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your startup disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free space.

  • What setting should I use for Abbey Road drums?  Getting a cpu overload issue

What setting should I use for Abbey Road drums (i.e. multi-output, stereo, etc)?  Getting a cpu overload issue.  I have a macbook pro, 4 gb ram, running Logic Pro 9.  Just 3 tracks of drums and a few real instrument tracks.  Can't find a guide in the manual for either Kontakt or Logic.  Thanks in advance!

    Hi
AR drums are complete resource (CPU) hogs. They work better if you turn off as many of the AR internal plugins as you can.
See section 4 (?) of the AR manual, which you can find within Kontakt (In the library area of Kontakt click hold the small "i" on the right of the "AR drummer" Library).
Alternatively, your only solution is to increase the I/O buffer in Preferences:Audio, with the associated increase in latency

  • Cannot open adobe flash in safari

I have tried uninstalling flash, deleting safari.plist in library, re-installing flash v9 and still cannot
open adobe flash in safari. Anyone have other ideas to help resolve this issue?

These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5)
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. This: http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?email&NewsID=19845 may also interest you.)
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
See also the very informative post from QuickTimeKirk dated Dec 3, 2007 in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1268489&tstart=0
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them).
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • Flash Player (Safari Internet plug-in) (not responding)

"Flash Player (Safari Internet plug-in) (not responding)"
I've been getting this message about every 10-15 minutes for the last week. I've taken to just leaving my "Force Quit Applications" window open so I can kill Flash Player as quickly and efficiently as possible. (It turns out that just doing that also force-quits the accompanying "Safari Web Content (not responding)" message.) Then I'm good for another 10-15 minutes until another opportunity rolls around for Flash Player to freeze my browser screen.
This problem started shortly after I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.10.3 (+ supplement) and Safari 8.0.5. I've downloaded Flash Player 3 times in the last week (most recently Version 17.0.0.169 earlier today), but to no avail. The only thing that seemed to help was trashing the Flash Player plug-in from my "Internet Plug-Ins" folder. But then, of course, I was SOL the next time I fired up a website that required it.
How can I make this problem go away?

Please try disabling hardware acceleration.  See the instructions in the video troubleshooting guide for details:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html
If you're still stuck, please let me know.

Go to Adobe's site and download the current Flash plug-in: Adobe Flash Player 11.6.602.155

  • Help with Mainstage 3.1 CPU overload issue

I was using Kontakt 5, UVI Workstation and Pianoteq 5 in MainStage 3 without any issues.
Since I updated to MS 3.1, The CPU is always above 100% !!! I am facing audio dropouts and it is absolutely impossible to play a show
Is anyone else facing the same issue? Any tips to help reduce CPU overload will be helpful.
I have Contact and UVI workstation running from an external hard disk. I thought that might be the issue but i tried with a keyboard template set in MS 3.1 and still while playing CPU usage shoots to 100% plus!
    I am on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Try to get the Mainstage 3.0.4 from a timemachine backup.
Try to update all your programs like pianotec.
For me, 3.1 feels better concerning timing/ latency. This might cause more stress for the processors.
My system i7 2,2 GHz is always getting hot, fans go crazy. There's a limit: Better than 64 Samples buffer is not possible.
To be serious: A real Piano needs  0,25ms to produce a sound. We have to deal with 4ms. That's bad. So you could increase buffersize to 128 and try playing? It makes no big difference if you play the poor 4ms ore poor 6ms for example. In every case we are far away from the real thing.
Check, if you activated the "savety buffer" checkbox in audiodriver window.
If you can't find 3.0.4., you could try to reduce the installed channelstrips in your patches. Effects in concert level should be reduced. Evt. you have Efx in busses that are not needed in most patches. So cancel them in concertlevel and install them in selected patches.
I replaced a spacedesigner reverb with an reverb outside the system, it's processed from the interface. Same with a chorus.
I tested a newer MacbookPro retina, that was not better than mine. The difference was, it produced little dropouts every 10 seconds.
Hopefuly there will be a update for 3.1 soon.
And be serious: Before 3.1 you could play a show without dropouts, but was it fun? Mainstage urgently needs better latency capabilities, generally.

  • CPU Overloads: What to try?

I know this is a tired subject but considering that it doesn't seem the CPU overload and application instability can be solved in the current version of Logic, just wondering if anyone has a good work around.
Basically, I find that while using 3rd party plugins (i.e. Kontakt 2, Omnisphere), I can get about 8 or 9 tracks before I begin to have routine application crashes, overload message, etc. Freezing does not change this (and the activity monitor shows a massive jump in real memory from 2.0 gigs to 16TB with the addition of a 9th track depending on the size of the instruments i'm using). This also has nothing to do with buffer size.
I realize that Logic has limitations in the collective size of the plugins that can be loaded (up to 2.7 gigs of 3rd party plugins) so I'm wondering if I wanted to at least double the number of soft synth instruments I can load up what could I do? I've heard some people add more hardware like another Mac or something like Muse receptor which can load your plugins through logic but doesn't tap into Logic resources. Not sure how this works though, or if there's a better idea out there.
Any heavy soft synth users out there?

and the activity monitor shows a massive jump in real memory from 2.0 gigs to 16TB
It's a known issue with Kontakt that it can only handle 2 Gigs, adjust the DFD settings and reduce the number of voices to 128 (12MB) that will free up quite a lot of RAM. Also you can open a standalone version of Kontakt and wire it via the IAC Bus giving you another 2 Gigs if you have enough RAM installed. With Kontakt update 3.5 the 2 Giga limit will be gone but that doesn't help so much as Logic will still be a 32 Bit application in which the limit still is about 2,7 Gigs of physical and 3,5 Gigs of virtual RAM.
Besides that enter the word "overload" in the search field of this Forum and you will get thousands of posts about that tiring topic...

Loading webpages on Safari has become extremely slow.  I have Mavericks.  Anything I need to be doing?

Power off the router. Wait awhile. Power it back on. Wait until all the lights are lit up  properly.
      It will take a while.
      Restart the computer.
    Reset Safari.
Click Safari in the menu bar.
From the drop down select "Reset Safari".
Uncheck the boxes beside  all items.
Just check the box beside “Remove all website data”.
    Click "Reset".
    Empty Caches
    Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
Turn off Extensions if any, and launch Safari.
    Safari > Preferences > Extensions

  • Disable Flash in Safari

I understand that Safari will run faster with Flash disabled, but how do you do that?

a FAR easier method of disabling Flash in Safari is below:  (and by the way,  the flash extension does slow your safari app and your machine down considerably,  if you do not notice the slow down,  you are just used to how slow flash has made your safari browser)
hint about flash on safari,  if you do download flash from adobe and install it,   keep your "acitivty monitor" application in your desktop tool bar,   when you launch safari, and go to a webpage with a bunch of crappy flash adds,  click on activity monitor,  find the flash process that is running and kill it...   suddenly your safari application is about 10 times more responsive for every website  (that has flash adds of any sort)   if you need to watch a video in flash,   just relaunch Safari.. and there you have it running with flash again,  and then when done immediately kill the flash process again...
"activity monitor'  can be found in your applications folder then under the utilities folder...   (click on big stop icon after highlighting a process that is running)
apple is interested in improving the whole experience and that means removing old tech that is slowing things down,  like flash and RSS, and replacing them with new tech,    if you want the old tech, Apple is just allowing those companies to write extensions,  so you can get that function back.    but you would be wise to try to not do that, and find the new tech...
this hint is the one that has saved the most frustrating minutes of the entire computing experience by far...... (or for that matter any browser that is using flash,  if you can't kill it,  then Safari is the better browser choice by far since you can kill flash at will)

  • Artsd giving me 'CPU overload' problem.

    Hello everybody,
I've just installed Arch Linux, along with X, KDE, and the like. Now, when I boot into KDE, I get this error message saying "Sound server fatal error: cpu overload, aborting".
The error message appears in an artsmessage window.
My computer becomes very slow before I get this error as artsd uses 99% of cpu before it crashes. I found this out using the `top` command.
I have alsa and all of it's modules compiled. The alsa module is also inserted into DAEMONS array.
So.. what does one do in this situation? Thanks.

I just tried that. The utility tells me everything is good.
So I decide to try something new. I log in as root and start KDE. Artsd doesn't crash anymore, and it only eats up half of my CPU.

I get a new window that pops up now, as soon as I log into KDE as root.
It's another artsmessage window, but this one says:
    " Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Device or resource busy)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device."
So, i'm stumped. I was going to get rid of the arch installation of alsa, and reinstall from the files i find at the alsa website, but I can't remove alsa using Pacman because other programs need it.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Aside from this minor wrinkle, i'm thoroughly impressed with Arch Linux. Having used Gentoo before this, it's embodies everything I liked about Gentoo without any of the bloody compiling. Good show.
