Flash Installer opens Internet Explorer instead of default browser

Every time I have installed Flash or installed an update, the installer concludes by opening my Internet browser to display its "Thank you and enjoy Adobe Flash Player. Here is another product that might interest you..." advert. The trouble is that it always opens it in Internet Explorer rather than my default browser. I never, ever use Internet Explorer since I consider it a major security risk and indeed the only time I ever see it is when I update Flash....
I've always wondered why the Flash Installer does this - every other program that opens a browser manages to open the default one, so how come Adobe's coders can't seem to manage it?

It typically opens the default browser regardless of which browser you're actually using.  I'm wondering if there's a funky registry key or something that confuses things for your system.
Either way, we usually launch the default system browse, which is not necessarily the browser you started the installation with.  This is a long-standing bad experience, and something that I complain to the team that makes the installer about on a regular basis.  Everyone involved recognizes that the behavior is less than ideal, but it's a fundamental design problem and it's not something that can be addressed with a simple fix.  It *is* very much on the radar as something that we want changed, and I'm pretty sure that it will get resolved in the installer over the long-term.
In the meantime, if you would like to avoid the Flash Player upgrade process entirely, Google Chrome includes Flash Player as a built-in component.  There's nothing separate to download from Adobe, and all the updates are made available directly through Chrome's update mechanism.

Click the Firefox button, go to Add-ons, then Plugins and disable "'''My Web Search'''". This is adware which runs in the background and spends its time trawling the web searching for ads to feed you.
Also, something shows in your system details with the number '''2,5,3,1 '''. Can you tell me what that is please? It's located in the same Plugins menu.
Similarly, I see three versions of Veetle. Disable the older ones if you don't need them.
On the security side, your Flash player is out of date and exposes your system to exploits. See: http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb11-12.html (Update link near the foot of the page).
If the problem persists, try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

  • Can I download Firefox and keep Internet Explorer as my default browser?

I am being prompted to install Firefox to use the MobileMe site with my IPAD. Before I download, I'd like to know if I can KEEP Internet Explorer as my Default Browser. I am NOT great with my computer and therefore would have difficulty fixing any technical challenges.

Yes you can keep IE as your default browser when installing Firefox, just answer NO when Firefox asks if you want to set it as the default browser.
What's that about the iPad? You can't install either IE or Firefox in the iPad, neither has a version for iOS.

When I reply to a add, instead of opening FireFox my default brouser, it opens IE and I have to login to my hotmail account again.

  • Clicking on a link does not open firefox and take me to the page when firefox is my default browser but does when Internet Explorer is my default browser, what is wrong?

All of a sudden (I think after the last firefox update) links in other web pages won't open firefox to access the page when firefox is my default browser but works when I change my default browser to Internet Explorer and I can't figure out why. Help!!!

This problem just arose for me today. Very frustrating. Tried all of the suggestions here without success. Then a very simple solution came to me:
UNINSTALL CHROME. I haven't used Chrome for a long while anyway since it seems to have chronic problems of one sort or another. Firefox does 95% of what I need, and Internet Explorer can handle the other 5%.
After uninstalling Chrome I clicked a mailto link. It asked me what program to use and did not list Firefox as an option for some reason. In the Tools menu, I chose "Options" and went to the "Applications" tab. Searched for "mailto". There was a single entry - when Chrome was installed it gave me no options to switch. After uninstalling Chrome I was able to change that. It still did not list Firefox, but it did list "Gmail". Selecting that causes my Gmail to open in Firefox.
I have no idea whether Google or Microsoft is responsible for this, but I'm inclined to give the hairy eyeball to Google for this one. It's the sort of stunt they'd pull on Microsoft, then pretend it was just a mistake. Just one guy's opinion, of course.

  • Numerous websites linked to desktop icons won't open with Firefox as my default browser, but will when I subsequently designate Internet Explorer as the default browser. However, when I select IE, I cannot open Firefox. How do I fix this? CharlieA

When I designate Firefox as my default browser, I cannot open any destop link to any website, except Mozilla. When I change that designation to Internet Explorer, I can open all destop linked websites, except for Firefox. What do I do?

Sometimes Windows gives you weird error messages when you click a link in another program or double-click a desktop shortcut. These messages usually occur only when Firefox was closed and has to be launched before the link can be loaded. Is that what you're getting? This occurs when Firefox's registry settings get crossed up, as described in this article: [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_error_opening_Internet_shortcut_or_local_HTML_file_-_Firefox Windows error opening Internet shortcut or local HTML file - Firefox - MozillaZine Knowledge Base].
If that isn't it, what happens exactly?

  • Internet Explorer is my default browser when I open iCal, how can I change it since it is always crashing?

I have ical pinned to my task bar, but when it opens, it opens in internet explorer.  This is really annoying since it is always crashing and never loads properly.  I use Chrome mostly, but also Firefox as a backup.  If there is any way to change this, please let me know.

  • Google desktop and Picasa open Internet Explorer even though Firefox is my default browser

I am using Firefox 6, and no matter what I do clicking on Google Desktop opens Internet Explorer instead of Firefox. I have set Firefox as the default browser in at least 3 places: In Firefox itself; on the Internet Options section of the Control Panel; In the add/remove programs Set Default Programs screen. This is all in Windows XP professional. The same problem happens with Picasa online albums (when I go from my computer's Picasa to Web Albums). I don't know when this started, but now I cannot get my Web timeline. I have uninstalled Google Desktop.

Hello nanemy1854, set also firefox as default browser in Add or Remove Programs list in win xp, see for more information : [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/setting-firefox-default-browser-does-not-work#w_windows-xp Firefox as default browser in win xp].
    thank you

  • I have internet explorer 9 as my browser and i need to also download firefox to access my yahoo business page. will they conflict?

internet explorer 9 is not supported by yahoo. what will happen when I download firefox? and then how do i remove it?

When you install Firefox (you can get the version for your operating system and language [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ here]), watch out for the option to make Firefox your default browser. If you want links in external programs to start in IE, keep IE as your default browser and start Firefox when you want to use it.
If Firefox takes over as default browser and you want to switch it back to IE, check out this article from Microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/make-ie-default-browser
    P.S. I can't understand why Yahoo wouldn't support IE9. I think that's still a popular version of IE.

  • .pdf hyperlinks in word open in Internet Explorer instead of Firefox

I have website addresses copied and pasted into a word document, which automatically makes them a hyperlink. Normal website addresses open fine in firefox (which is my default browser) when I Ctrl+click on them. Web links to a .pdf, however, open Internet Explorer and then open in Adobe Acrobat inside Internet Explorer. How can I get .pdf links to open in Firefox when I Ctrl+click on them?

I have the same problem (roughly) - I have PDF hyperlinks in an Excel spreadsheet and, when clicked, instead of them opening directly in Acrobat (or via Firefox, my default browser), they open via IE. Regular HTML links in the Excel spreadsheet open in Firefox.
I have enabled the '''Block PDF files' access to all web sites''' option under ''Trust Manager'' category in the Adobe Reader ''Preferences'' tab.
I have also disabled the '''Adobe PDF Link Helper''' Extension in the ''Manage Add-ons'' tab in IE.
Obviously, neither of these settings made any difference.

  • Update opens Windows Explorer instead of download iOS 5...

When I connect my iPad 2 (4.3.3) to iTunes (10.5), then select Update, it opens Windows Explorer instead of looking for the update from Apple.  How can I get it to download iOS 5?  I am using 32-bit Windows 7 Enterprise.

It typically opens the default browser regardless of which browser you're actually using.  I'm wondering if there's a funky registry key or something that confuses things for your system.

  • Why is my Firefox Add-ons (Crowdstar Gamebar - Ask Toolbar) installed on Internet Explorer instead? Some of my game friends can see and use it on Firefox.

Why is Firefox add-on (Crowdstar Gamebar) installed on Internet Explorer instead? Some of my game friends can see and use it on Firefox after installing it on Firefox.
    My Firefox is version 3.6.9.

That is not a Firefox addon, it is an installer package that can install anything it wants on your PC. As far as why it installed on IE and not Firefox, that would be a question for technical support for that product.
