Flash malware

My macbook pro seems to have a flash malware infection. I restored using a time machine version prior to when I think I got the infection, but didn't work. The primary symptom is everything involving downloads or uploads is very very slow and there seems to be a lot of traffic when I look at the modem lights.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Is this malware, OR just a poorly completed application?
It updates to a version that is not the absolute latest on the Adobe website downloads page which is what first got my attention. Yesterday I had to delete the updater executable to get Flash to update to the latest. Yet today here goes the updater again with the properties: "Adober Flashr Player Update Service 13.0 r0".

Can you post a screenshot of what you see: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1070933

  • I keep getting "Attention! Your current version of Adobe Flash player is outdated! Your computer is vulnerable to malware now. Update your Adobe Flash player now" but I already have an updated version of adobe

It pops up randomly and won't let me click out of it. I'm certain it's malware or something like that, but I can't seem to stop it from happening. Below is a page that I'm directed to each time. I think all this started from me clicking on someone's tumblr page.
Here's another image from a different tumblr page. I'm afraid to download it because I don't know what it will do.

    You should ignore it.
You should updeate only either from System > Flash Player > Check Now
    or direct from Adobe site.
         Install Adobe Flash Player.
        http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Chrome has built in Flash Player. This is bogus warning.

  • MALWARE or Flash?

    hello.
when i try to download the flashplayer for internet explorer,or firefox.i get these links:
    http://aihdownload.adobe.com/bin/live/install_flashplayer11x32ax_gtbd_chrd_dn_aih.exe
    http://fphdownload.adobe.com/bin/live/install_flashplayer11x32_gtbd_chrd_dn_aih.exe
those files are the wrong size(976/977kb.it should be about 4MBs),& will not install.
i think those are malware/virus files.
look what it says in their description:
    version:3.3.3.0(it should be:11.4.402.287)
    company:Solid State Networks(it should be:Adobe Systems Incorporated)
    Internal Name/Original File Name:host.exe
i had even reported this to:https://bugbase.adobe.com ,but i never got a reply.
    what is this mess???
these seem like the wright files:
    http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/11.4.402.287/install_flash_player_ax.exe
    http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/11.4.402.287/install_flash_player.exe
but they are way too big.(both are 9+ MBs.)
which means, they are bundled with mcafee,or something from google?
WHERE/HOW CAN I DOWNLOAD JUST THE FLASH PLAYER WITHOUT THE EXTRA SOFTWARE?
    my os:win. X.P.

    hello Chris.
thank you for that official reply, but let us clarify a few things:
    1.)no,there was no mistake!
when i clicked on the download link,i got:fphdownload.adobe.com,& not aihdownload.adobe.com.
i'm not sure what to tell you.i got that link from my browser's history.
different versions, different links,or maybe it was one of the billion adobe glitches/bugs.
anyway, now that i think about it,it's irrelevant!(since the direct links change every once in a while.)
2a.)nowhere is it clearly specified that those 976/977kb files are:initialization/online versions of the Flash Player installers.
2b.)the older 3.3.3.0 versions "DID NOT HAVE THE DIGITAL ADOBE SIGNATURES."
again,"i don't know what to tell you."
also, they would get to 50-57%,& stop installing.
i had seen this a million times on different computers,& operating systems.
you can see why those people/me would think,"something is strange about that!"
    2c.)the new 976/975kb (3.3.4.0) versions do have the adobe's digital signatures,but still show:Solid State Networks,& host.exe in their descriptions.
funny how they had been versions 3.3.3.0 for 6 months(maybe more),but the day after i had posted this.they are versions 3.3.4.0.
    what an interesting "coincidence!?"
    skipping ahead a little...
3.)yes,the "early" 11.2 versions did have the 32,& 64 bit versions.(i can not speak for the later 11.2 versions,or 11.3s.)
if they were combined into 1 "universal" version.that would explain why they went from about 4MBs to 9+MBs.
however,if you were to go here:http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ ,& try to download the plugin version.you would see:Your system: Windows 32-bit , English, Firefox.
whether it's ff,or ie you get the "32 bit install_flashplayer11x32_BLAH_BLAH.exe versions."
while adobe's website detects your settings, this is just more versions,& more confusion!
4.Chris,must i really point this out!?
how about if you/someone permanently pins a thread with the name:"Flash Player Installer/Uninstaller Direct Download Links" on top of others here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/flashplayer/installing_flashplayer
    or here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/flashplayer/installing_flashplayer?view=discussions&star t=0&numResults=30
it should look something like this:
Flash Player Uninstallers VERSIONS 10,& LOWER:
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player_32bit.exe
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player_64bit.exe
Flash Player Uninstallers VERSIONS 10,& HIGHER:
    http://download.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash_player.exe
    Flash Player Installers:
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer):
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/support/install_flash_player_ax.exe
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers):
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/support/install_flash_player.exe
    Other Devices:
    BLAH,BLAH BLAH...
    Older FULL Versions:
    (LIKE HERE,BUT NOT DEBUGGERS)
    EXAMPLE:http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
the same links are needed here:http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ ,but i'm not going to hold my breath.
people had been complaining about unnecessary software bundling there, default yes check,or moving the checkbox.
so,why would direct links be there.that would make the adobe's website easy,& convenient to use.we wouldn't want that.now would we!?
    OR
would you Chris/Pat/a million other helpers prefer to post this link gazillion times in every thread!?
    http://helpx.adobe.com/content/help/en/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player- windows.html#main-pars_header
5.)Chris,siiiggghhhh...how i wish you hadn't told me about that DRM GARBAGE!
    let me get this straight:
IF THE DRM FILE(S) IS/ARE MISSING,EMPTY,OR CORRUPTED.THEN,NOTHING WILL WORK/PLAY.ESPECIALLY,IF YOU ARE TRYING TO WATCH A MOVIE,OR PLAY A GAME OFFLINE.(YOU NEED INTERNET CONNECTION TO AUTHENTICATE,& GET VOUCHERS IN ORDER TO PLAY GAMES/WATCH VIDEO.)
NO CONTENT CREATED THROUGH ADOBE'S CHANNELS NEEDS DRM!
SO,THIS MUST BE THE WORK OF NOGOODLE/YOUTUBE.THAT WAY,NO ONE CAN WATCH YOUTUBE VIDEOS OFFLINE.(FLV/MP4)
    AND
NVIDIA IS TRYING TO DESTROY 3D ENVIRONMENT(relatively speaking) GAMES,& MINI GAMES DONE IN FLASH.(SWF.)
THIS WAY PEOPLE WILL BE FORCED TO BUY NVIDIA'S OVERPRICED VIDEO CARDS.
ADOBE,WHO THE HELL GAVE YOU PERMISSION TO STICK DRM INTO FLASH???
ANY OFFICIAL STATEMENTS?NO!REALLY!?WHY AM I NOT SURPRISED!?
ADOBE CONGRATULATIONS.YOU HAD JUST DESTROYED FLASH!!!
GIVE YOURSELVES A ROUND OF APPLAUSE.CLAP,CLAP,CLAP...
note to self,"NEVER USE ANY FLASH VERSIONS ABOVE 11.4."
IF NO VERSIONS BELOW 11.5 ARE AVAILABLE.
    NEVER,EVER,EVER,EVER USE FLASH AGAIN!!!!!
    TIME TO BOYCOTT ADOBE!!!
not that any of you care.

  • Adobe flash player bundled with MALWARE?

When I was prompted to download an update to my flash player recently I did so and from that point on was plagued by the rogue search engine Delta. I also found Web Cake, BrowserProtect. It appears that the malware came from the same source as the adobe flash update. I'm still not sure I have got rid of the effects and may have to re-build my system. Was this not really Flash but as the tag below suggest, but malware_masquerades_as_flash_install?
    Any comments?

There were dozens of reports recently about fake update notifications, trying to trick users into downloading malware.
Make sure that the download only comes from the adobe.com domain.

  • Flash Player won't work following malware removal - help!

I removed some malware using malwarebytes, which I thought was the end of my problem, but in fact it has opened up a bigger one, in that Flash Player has stopped working.  I've tried uninstalling and re-installing - now have version 10.2.153.1 - but no success.  Kids didn't mind when they couldn't access their online homework; not so happy now they can't play their games either.  I've looked at other discussions for a solution, but nothing quite fits this problem.  Any help gratefully accepted.
I can follow instructions but I'm not techie, so any replies need to be idiot-friendly, thanks.

Have just spotted your post about the "kill-bit" http://forums.adobe.com/message/3432049#3432049 - sounds remakably like my problem so will check it out when I get home this evening.  Just one question though - is there any point in first trying to do a system restore to a point prior to the malware removal, or would I be wasting my time?

  • Suspicious flash player installer, anybody seen this? Malware or legit?

    Hello,
Today I have encountered a hack/malware-like thing on my website - transcosmic.com - this flash window just pops up on every page after (but not always) a what seems to be legit IE error notification - "Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site... Operation aborted."
The flash window looks like this:
It appears and immediately opens a download window, downloading a file named install-flash-player.exe from a website called install-adobe-flash.com, it happens in IE and Safari, but never in FF - it's really weird, I don't think it's a hack since my wp-admin is fine without this download appearing and without any hacking evidence there.
Is that legit? Any suggestions, anybody seen this before? I tried googling these file and domain, but almost nothing came up...
Thank you in advance for any info!

Well, Even know i just signed up like 3 minutes ago and not very good in knowing much about adobe myself but i have a suggestion. Now that doesn't seem normal or something adobe would do. Try scanning with a program named malwarebytes, It's a really good scanning program to remove malware and such. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ I'll almost guarantee it'll find something on your computer.
    Hope it helps.

  • Virus/Malware Solution Recommended For Flash Zero Day Breach

Can anyone recommend a virus/malware protection solution.  I attempted to download adobe flash this morning and now malware has control of my browser and is sending a page with an 866 number to call.  My IT tech called the number and it is an India call center and they want remote access to your machine.  I have installed several different malware packages and none of them can find the files that are causing this problem.  I am using a MAC with OSX 10.10.

Aaaahhhh yes... remember when an entire day could by without news of a breach or hack or targeted attack? Yeah... neither do I.It will probably shock you all to hear that the Symantec Security Response team dropped a new blog over the weekend outlining a Zero-Day vulnerability in Adobe Flash player. Dig it:Second PoC Exploit for Adobe Flash Player Discovered After the Hackers-for-Hire Company Breach
Yet another Adobe Flash Player zero-day discovered from the Hacking Team breach.Symantec is aware of a second vulnerability (CVE-2015-5122) in Adobe Flash Player that’s associated withHacking Team, the Italian company which recently suffered a major data breach. The existence of the unpatched vulnerability has been confirmed by Adobein itssecurity bulletin.Symantec’s analysis has confirmed that the vulnerability can be successfully exploited...

  • New malware disguised as flash installer

I'm a dummy....fell for the ruse, any ideas on how to get rid of this new malware?  thanks

I have had some pop ups saying Flash seems to have crashed.Mainly on Youtube videos.
That's just an error message, not an attempt to get you to download and install software.
    Is my MBP infected?
If you've downloaded and installed Flash only from Adobe's web site, then no. Ignore any other site's attempt to convince you to install any software they are not the distributors of.
What signs do I look for. I am 99% certain I have not downloaded anything but 1% of me says maybe!
Not sure. From what's published on it so far, you wouldn't see any obvious activity, which is the point. Everything they want the Trojan to do happens in the background.
I just ran software update and nothing new was found.
Software Update is only for updating Apple software, such as OS X, Final Cut Studio, iLife, etc. It doesn't check for any updates from third party vendors.
so is the update a remote piece of software?
Yes, Flash is supplied by Adobe. You can get the real thing here.
Sorry I am not used to this on my MAC, been a 'user' since 2002 and never worried before.
There's always something to worry about, no matter what OS you're using. You just have to be vigilant, more than anything else. For now, viruses are still non existent. What few OS X exploits there are, are Trojans. Software that requires you to fall for some supposed value it has and installing it yourself.

  • Hi, i'm a new member of this community. I've recently learn about flashback malware and other threats to Mac devices. I've installed the new Mac OS X update for Lion 10.7, and the flashback removal tool. what about the update for Flash Player?

    Hi,
i'm a new member of this community. I've recently learn about flashback malware and other threats to Mac devices. I've installed the new Mac OS X update for Lion 10.7, and the flashback removal tool. What about the update for Flash Player? Should i install it? Otherwise, should i permanently remove this app?
    I realy need some advice.
    Thank's to all.

Be sure to install the latest version of Safari (version 5.1.7) which is available via Software Update (in the Apple menu) if you have not already installed it. This update will automatically disable older versions of Flash when new versions are available, and will instruct you on how to install the latest version on your system. This should help keep your system safe from any vulnerabilities in Flash.
Note that this is only useful if you use Safari, though other browsers have their own update mechanisms you should research and enable or configure to your liking.

    Hello there,
Have you attempted to restart your network by unplugging your router for a full minute, then plugging it back in? This can help with intermittent issues such as what you're seeing with sluggish websites.
Additionally, clearing your browsers cookies and cache can help remove excess data that could be causing some loading issues. For each browser follow the links below:
    Safari: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4448839?tstart=0
    Chrome: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95582?hl=en-GB
Give those steps a try and see if the issue still persists.
