Flash Media Server - Easy Upload Tool?

Hi,
My company currently uses FMS 3.5 and use it quite reguraly to stream video to clients over the web. I am currently the only user with access to the root FTP for placing the video files onto the FMS. What we would like to know; Is there any easy way to for other colleagues to upload videos onto the FMS without giving them direct access. IE an upload tool that places a video onto the server.
I have found a tutorial here:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/adobe-media-server/articles/video_sharing_web_app.html
which seemed to solve an issue, however it seems to require Flash Media Encoding Server, which no longer exists and we do not have.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Martin

  • JMF or flash media server? Why JMF

    Hi all,
    I was studing about jmf since 2 months in order to make a live video and audio broadcast. But recently I found out about flash media server.
    It seems that is verygood for those kind of web applications.
    I am so confused about which one I shoud use. I have no idea about FMS.
    There are some I want to learn.
    Whe we develop an JMF application how all clients of this web site use JMF? For developing purposes I setup JMF.
    Do all the clients have to install JMF in order to use my site or others which done using JMF?
    After all, probably everyone has a flash installed and no problem if a site developed by flash.
    Can you enlight me please?
    and I have no Idea about NAT, PROXY for developing RTP live video web application.

    regerybets wrote:
    ..Whe we develop an JMF application how all clients of this web site use JMF? .. The first thing you need to understand is that JMF is effectively an abandoned API. It works fine for some older formats of media, but does not support the later (more compressive) formats.
    I am guessing by 'in web site' you mean you want the media embedded in a web page (and by the way - yuck!). That means using applets.
    1) Embedded applets cannot use natives unless the end user has either
    a) Also installed JMF, which is usually impractical for the purposes of just 'showing some media in a web page', or
    b) The applet is using a plugin-2 JRE and hooks into the JNLP API to install the natives.
    2) If the cross-platform version of JMF is used, you just need to add the JMF Jars to the archive attribute of the applet element. The x-plat version of JMF supports (even) less formats than the one using natives, but at least it should also work on the Mac.
    ..For developing purposes I setup JMF.
    Do all the clients have to install JMF in order to use my site or others which done using JMF?Yes. In one form or another, as detailed above.
    After all, probably everyone has a flash installed and no problem if a site developed by flash.That is a rash assumption for either Flash or Java. I did not have Flash installed for a long time since I could not spare the bandwidth to be watching media in web pages. I only installed it recently when a friend convinced me to upload some of [my time-lapse animations|http://www.youtube.com/user/DrewTubeish] (3) to YouTube.
    There are other reasons people either do not have, cannot install, or refuse to install, either plug-in. The best you can do for them, is to give them accurate and easy to understand information on why the page failed. Both Flash and Java have ways to do that - usually with the help of JacvaScript.
    3) Shameless plug. ;)

  • Flash Media Server - Stream AVI

    Hello, I would like to know if it is possible to stream video
    files to the adobe flash media server. I have been able to setup
    the server and client, and been able to stream my webcam to the
    server, and from the server to clients.
    Is it possible to stream an AVI (or other video format) file
    directly to the server? (avi--->server--->client) ?
    Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

    a friend tell me Flash Video Server is a cool tool,it is a
    powerful video streaming platform which provides services of
    streaming Flash videos and audios between the server side and
    client side. Flash Video Server offers you easy solution to enable
    your clients to play, record, and publish local Flash videos, live
    videos and audios to the server and share with other users.

  • Flash Media Server 3 / FlashPioneer Video Chat

    Just recently, I purchased and installed
    'FlashPioneerVideoChat'...
    I decided to use Flash Media Server 3 (developer addition)
    for the local server. The problem is you can't login to the FMS
    Server from the client end although all other communication aspects
    work fine. When a connection is made the login starts but doesn't
    open the application, it just keeps running. The Client side has
    been debugged and tested so that points to the Flash Server and
    whatever settings have to be made and/or code added to what file?
    Could someone please point me in the right direction, Thank
    you much ...

    Hi, but doesn't the linux version work on a mac?
    I'm a bit confused here.
    I currently shoot video on a Canon mini dv camera and edit in Apple imovie.
    Convert to Apple Quicktime and then import into Flash 8 video encoder.
    I ftp the clips upto a flash server, from my mac and upload the playlist to my website host
    using Flash 8.
    Don't tell me i've now got to get one of those dreadful PC thingies to complete the loop,
    surely Adobe didn't invent this wonderful piece of software so it could run from a PC?
    Or did they?

  • Audio not streaming correctly from Flash Media Server

    Our company has a Flex application (3.0.2) that is having a problem with audio dropping out in Windows 7.  The problem appears worse with a wireless connection, but it can’t be consistently reproduced there, either.  The only thing known for sure is that the problem has not been seen on any other version of Windows.
    The application thinks the audio is playing, because it is calling the appropriate event listeners triggered when the audio completes and when any audio cue points are hit.  The majority of our audio is streaming via Flash Media Server (3,0,2,201), but the problem was also seen using embedded sound effects.  In one instance, several clicks of a button triggered an error saying the sound effect could not be loaded, and then about a minute later, all the sound effects played at once and the user could then continue with the application.
    The problem has been repeated in IE 8, Firefox 3 and Chrome.

    Thanks for your details. But i need more info.
    Server:
    FMS      3.0.2 ?
    FMS installed in which platform Linux/windows? more details about it.
    Client:
    IE          7
    Flash Player version     ?
    WIndows 7
    Wireless connection - Was the client placed in poor bandwidth.
    Can you get the NetStream status info when u play the audio file.? We can check for the rebuffering happening at the client side.
    Can you run your audio file through flvCheck Tool to check if the media file is in good form. It is available at "\$Root|Flash Media Server\tools\flvcheck.exe"
    Now our intention should be to check the same media file with simpler application (since your production app is complicated) to ensure that the media streaming over 'client to server' is working fine.

  • Linux issue with Flash Media Server 2

    Greetings all,
    We have just upgraded from Flash Communication Server 1.5 to
    Flash Media Server 2, running on a server with Redhat Enterprise
    Linux 4.
    For some reason, a Flash movie that uses the old
    MediaPlayBack component does not stream video of a FLV. It does
    stream audio. On my testing server using Windows 2000 it functioned
    fine.
    On the other hand, the FLVPlayback component works nicely.
    But I will have to go back and rewrite literally dozens of
    applications that I wrote for Flash Comm 1.5 which used the
    MediaPlaybackComponent, unless there is an easy fix for this.
    I have documented this anomaly with a Captivate movie which
    you can see at
    http://breeze.stfrancis.edu:8900/mediaplayerwoes/.
    It runs 2 minutes 13 seconds.
    I BADLY need help with this. If you can help I would greatly
    appreciate it.

    I'm more or less in the same boat. I've got the admin console
    up. I am able to run the vodtest application locally pointing the
    video file to rtmp://localhost/vod/sample.flv or using the server
    name instead of localhost as in rtmp://mclmedia/vod/sample.flv
    I can also load the html and swf file to my xp machine that

  • Flash Media Server Online

    Hi,
    I am creating an application that involves using flash media
    server. I have downloaded the version that lets me test things
    locally but I need to show these tests online. Is there a service
    where I could have a limited amount of upload etc. I am a student
    and can't afford the complete server, I just need to show that my
    application can record from a webcam and then play it back online.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

    I have written some code which should help you do this. You
    can find it here:

    It is still in its early stages but is improving.

  • Flash Media Server Licensing Question

    This may seem like a simple NO, but I'm interested in
    building a pre-built image which will contain Linux installation
    and Adobe Flash Media Server pre-configured. This setup would be in
    a single image file used to run inside of VMware Server as a
    Virtual Machine. By building the image, anyone who wants to test
    FMS could download the image and load it into the Virtual Machine,
    and not have to dedicated a full server to the installation.
    If anyone can provide me a factual answer, either yes, no, or
    someone to contact at Adobe I would be very appreciative.
    Similar images of other programs can be found here:

    No. FMS is not an "out of the box" solution. You'll need some
    experience with Flash (client side flash), but how much you'll need
    to know depends on the application you plan to build.
    Adobe provides a set of communication components and sample
    applications, and it's fairly easy to drag and drop your way to a
    simple webcam application. It won't be very flexible, and it
    certainly won't be secure, but it will get you started.
    You'll also need to understand how to install and configure
    server software, or hire someone to do that part for you. Just so
    it's said, you can't install FMS on a shared hosting account, so
    you'll need your own server.
    As far as learning curve goes, I suppose it depends on your
    background. If you already have an understanding of actionscript
    and client/server communication, then the learning curve isn't
    horribly steep. If you don't have a background in Flash (client
    side flash), you might want to cover some of those basics before
    diving into FMS. Unlike other streaming servers, there is no
    default player that just pops open on the client side when a stream
    is requested (like Windows Media or Real)... you need to build the
    client application (.swf) yourself.

  • Very basic question: Flash Media Server vs. embedding flash video

    I'm hoping this is a quick easy question to answer:
    What is the difference between Flash Media Server and simply
    using a freeware Flash media player (like Flowplayer
    http://flowplayer.org/) that
    uses XML playlists to embed your Flash videos on a website?
    What are the advantages to Flash Media Server and how does
    something like Flowplayer not address issues that FMS can?
    Thanks in advance!
    Erik

    In a nutshell flowplayer delivers the video through your web
    browser. It does this via http protocol (port 80) and progressive
    download on any web server
    Progressive download finds the video on the server and plays
    it back through the player as it is being downloaded. 2 important
    things to take from this are 1, the video is being downloaded to
    the clients hard drive, at the end of the playback they will have a
    copy of your video that they can do whatever they like to and
    repost it somewhere else. 2, It plays back as it downloads, meaning
    if I'm viewing a 10 minute video from your site and want to skip
    ahead to the middle or end I have to wait for the whole video to
    download before viewing those segments. Your web host by the way
    will love you for progressive download because it will appear as
    though your transfer rate has gone through the roof. Once the
    request for the video is made there is no turning back, the client
    gets the whole thing whether they watch it or not.
    Flash media server uses the rtmp protocol. This protocol is
    an open socket protocol through port 1935. This is a two way street
    essentially. When the user views a video using FMS they basically
    get only enough of the video to keep the connection open and
    satisfy the required buffer to assure clean playback. The bytes of
    info that carry the video only go to the users memory, not the hard
    drive. This allows the user to jump back and forth around in the
    movie without having to wait for the whole thing to download.
    Hope that helps.

  • Is Flash Media server being used commercially--TV? etc.

    Would much appreciate some concrete (live time) examples of Flash Media server being used in a commercial enterprise.  Prefer domestic (US) but any will be great.  Any closed network systems such as a multi-campus university?
    Is it being used only as a one-to-many distriution tool?  Or, is it being used as a many-to-many remote classroom environment?
    Thanks,
    Greg. Eckrich, aka
    chicagohotdog

    On your requirement of having your web app manage access, your developers will need to program some supporting classes on the FMS side. If the web app is to maintain access control, the flow will work like this:
    1. User credentials will be provided to the client side application (the .swf) either by manual entry via a form, or by runtime variables provided in the flash object embed code.
    2. When the client connects to the FMS application, the credentials will be passed in the connection request
    3. The FMS application will make an HTTP request of the web application server to validate the credentials.
    4. The web app server will reply with a pass/fail result
    5. The FMS application will accept/reject the connection accordingly.
    Server side programming for FMIS (server side actionscript) is Javascript, so if your developers are already experienced with Javascript, they should have no problem getting comfortable with the FMS API.

  • Why Flash Media Server

    Hi All,
    As it stands currently, I'm developing online teaching applications that faculty can use in their classes, as well as encoding and uploading videos to our Windows Servers.  For database management, I'm coding server side scripts in PHP, and dumping everything into MySQL.  Then embedding all the content into Moodle (which is hosted by a 3rd party).
    I'm looking at a Flash Server Solution for a couple of reasons:
    1) Delivering Streaming video instead of Progressive Download
    2) Allowing instructors to encode and upload their own videos (similar to YouTube) without having to go through my office
    3) Providing extra copyright security - in order to use some copyright videos, we have to ensure that only the students who are enrolled in specific classes can access the data.  As it stands now, a smart student with the right URL can download anything we have up on our Windows servers.
    Some Questions and concerns:
    1) I don't know Cold Fusion.  Will I have to rewrite all my scripts for that?  Can Flash Media Server run PHP?
    2) This is probably a really stupid one, but... Is Flash Server it's own platform, or does it have to run on a Windows or Linux box?
    3) Does it need its own dedicated machine?  Can you run a virtual server with Flash Server?
    4) Which of the different flavors of Flash Server are best?
    5) What kind of hardware specs are we looking at?  We have 20,000 students and maybe a few thousand at any one time would have to access
    Sorry about all the dumb questions.  I'm mostly an app developer, but am in the position of having to make this decision, and then defend the decision if I decide to puruse a Flash server solution.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi riquigley,
    Following are quick answers on a few of your questions.  Hopefully other folks will add their thoughts and also answer the questions I have skipped over.
    4) Which of the different flavors of Flash Server are best?
    -- FOR STRAIGHT VIDEO STREAMING USE Flash Media Streaming Server.  THE PRICE POINT IS LOWER THAN Flash Media Interactive Server (aka FMIS. FMIS IS ONLY NEEDED FOR INTERACTIVE APPLICATIONS, E.G. MULTIUSER, CHAT, ETC.)
    -- COMPARE EDITIONS PAGE HERE:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/compare/
    2) ... does it have to run on a Windows or Linux box?
    -- YES.  FMS IS A SERVICE THAT RUNS ON AN OS.  WINDOWS AND RED HAT LINUX ARE SUPPORT. FULL REQUIREMENTS HERE:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediastreaming/systemreqs/
    3) Does it need its own dedicated machine?  Can you run a virtual server with Flash Server?
    -- DEDICATED MACHINE *NOT* REQUIRED.
    -- HOSTED SOLUTIONS ARE AVAILABLE TOO.  HOSTED SOLUTIONS MAY OFFER: A) BETTER QUALITY; B) LOWER TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP; C) QUICKER START TO LAUNCH.
    -- SEE LIST OF HOSTING PARTNERS, AKA CDNs (Content Delivery Networks) HERE:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/fvss/
    1) I don't know Cold Fusion.  Will I have to rewrite all my scripts for that?  Can Flash Media Server run PHP?
    -- COLDFUSION NOT REQUIRED.  EITHER PHP OR COLDFUSION CAN BE USED TO MANAGE METADATA (INCLUDING SQL DATABASE INTERACTION).
    -- PHP AND COLDFUSION HANDLE ALL HTTP REQUESTS AND RETURN DYNAMICALLY GENERATED PAGES TO THE USERS' BROWSERS.
    -- FLASH MEDIA SERVER HANDLES ALL RTMP REQUESTS.  DYNAMICALLY GENERATED PAGES FROM PHP WILL INCLUDE THE RTMP URLs THAT THE FLASH/FLEX SWFs USE IN THE BROWSER TO REQUEST THE RTMP STREAMS FROM THE FLASH MEDIA SERVERS.

  • Trying to buffer on Flash Media Server

    Hi all, I am very embasarred about this as I should really have studied more but I am having massive difficulty in getting my videos to buffer from Flash Media Server 3.5. The videos are on the web and streaming fine so really I just need to put some actionscript in to make them work... sounds easy. Also, I come across an article by Fabio Sonatti which seems to offer the solution I need. He states the following script.
    function initConnection() {
       // Create a NetConnection
       nc = new NetConnection();
       // Define onStatus event handler
       nc.onStatus = function(info) {
       trace("Level: "+info.level+" Code: "+info.code);
       // Initialize the stream after the connection is successful
       if (info.code == "NetConnection.Connect.Success") {
          trace("--- connected to: " + this.uri);
          startStream(); //Inizialize the stream
       // try to connect, to be changed with your app path
       nc.connect("rtmp://127.0.0.1/dualBuffering/demo");
    function startStream() {
       //Define stream and buffers parameters
        stream_name="test_stream";  //your stream
        startBufferLength=2; //keep this in the range 2-4+
        expandedBufferLength=15;  //arbitrarily high
       // create a netstream
       ns = new NetStream(nc);
       // Define onStatus event handler
       ns.onStatus = function(infoObject:Object) {
          if (infoObject["code"]=="NetStream.Buffer.Full"){
          ns.setBufferTime(expandedBufferLength);
          trace("set expanded buffer");
          if (infoObject["code"]=="NetStream.Buffer.Empty"){
          ns.setBufferTime(startBufferLength);
          trace("set start buffer");
       // attach the NetStream to a video object
       // change from videoObj to your istance name if needed
       videoObj.attachVideo(ns);
       ns.setBufferTime(startBufferLength);
       ns.play(stream_name, 0);
    initConnection();
    stop();
    Now, please appreciate that I know very lkittle about ActionScript but I do know to change the path "rtmp etc etc" to the location of my video on the FMS, so thats fine. However this is where I have a problem I am afraid. I am 100% sure that I need to replace some other items within the code to make it work (as I get errors when I test the video in Flash) but I am afraid and embarassed that I have no idea which items to change. I know the code is perfect but I dont know what a NetStream is and this I think is letting me down.
    I apologise in advance for being an idiot but I am just desperate to get these videos buffering, I know this is the codfe to do it but I need someone to just talk to me in dead simpl;e terms to put me in the right direction. Can anyone help ? : Many thanks : Dom

    MediaPlayer.stop() will only stop playback of the stream, but not close the connection.
    If you set MediaPlayer.media to null, then it will close the connection.

  • Flash Media Server v3.5 - fmscheck question.

    Hi,
    I'm running some tests on an existing application that is configured with 12 "instances." When I run fmscheck with the "--allapps" flag set, only one of the 12 instances returns "NetConnection.Connect.Success." All other instances return "NetConnection.Connect.Rejected". Is this normal operation?

    One of the workarounds that I have found is ... i.e try making all three FMS Windows Services (Flash Media Administration Server, Flash Media Server (FMS) and FMSHttpd) in the some domain controller account or atleast the same Administrator.
    After doing so first manually stop the Flash Media Administration Server. After the Administration Server Stops Now run the Flash Media Server (FMS) which should also automatically launch the FMSHttpd Service (Apache). Once both are started then try starting the Flash media Administration Server.
    To make sure that Flash Media Administration Service Always Starts LAST you can either use Manual Batch file in sequence of starting or can set up the option of 'Delayed Start' in Services Settings.

  • Please somebody help  Flash Media Server 4

    I've installed Flash Media Server 4 (I tried on i686 and x86 with CentOS)
    also have uploaded applications to /opt/adove/fms/applications/test
    here what I see in log files:
    Connection rejected by server. Reason : [ Server.Reject ] : (_defaultRoot_, _defaultVHost_) : Application (test/_definst_) is not a valid signed application; loading access denied.
    please somebody help

    Are you sure that you are using adminconsole from location which mamata specified and not using some old adminconsole from you previous installation or something. I suspect you might be using older adminconsole.swf
    You can also get same information using getLicenseInfo Admin command.
    Please change your Users.xml to all getLicenseInfo or All. Open Users.xml under conf directory and you should find below text:
    <AdminServer>
    <HTTPCommands>
    <!-- Enable or disable using HTTP requests to execute admin commands.     -->
    <!-- Set to "true" to enable, otherwise it will be disabled.  The           -->
    <!-- actual commands permitted for server admin and virtual host admin    -->
    <!-- users can be set in the Allow and Deny elements.                                       -->
    <Enable>${USERS.HTTPCOMMAND_ALLOW}</Enable>
    <!-- List of server admin commands that can be accessed via HTTP.         -->
    <!-- Add multiple commands separated by commas.  "All" indicates          -->
    <!-- every command (it's not recommended to allow all commands).          -->
    <!-- Seperate multiple commands with commas.                              -->
    <Allow>ping</Allow>
    <!-- List of server admin commands denied access via HTTP.                -->
    <!-- Add multiple commands seperated by commas.  "All" indicates          -->
    <!-- every command.                                                       -->
    <Deny>All</Deny>
    <!-- Processing order for deny and allow command lists.  "Deny,Allow"     -->
    <!-- means the command will be allowed if the command is in the allow     -->
    <!-- list or not in the deny list.   "Allow,Deny" means the command       -->
    <!-- will be allowed if it is in the allow list and not in the            -->
    <!-- deny list.                                                           -->
    <Order>Deny,Allow</Order>
    </HTTPCommands>
    </AdminServer>
    </Root>
    Now change above content to below content:
    <AdminServer>
    <HTTPCommands>
    <Allow>All</Allow>
    <!-- List of server admin commands denied access via HTTP.                -->
    <!-- Add multiple commands seperated by commas.  "All" indicates          -->
    <!-- every command.                                                       -->
    <Deny></Deny>
    <!-- Processing order for deny and allow command lists.  "Deny,Allow"     -->
    <!-- means the command will be allowed if the command is in the allow     -->
    <!-- list or not in the deny list.   "Allow,Deny" means the command       -->
    <!-- will be allowed if it is in the allow list and not in the            -->
    <!-- deny list.                                                           -->
    <Order>Deny,Allow</Order>
    </HTTPCommands>
    </AdminServer>
    </Root>
    Once you made the change , restart FMS and FMS Admin Server.
    Once both services are restarted, open a browser and put following text in address bar and hit enter (replace necessary stuff like server-ip,AdminUserId and AdminUserPassword to your FMS ip, FMS Admin User and FMS Admin Password respectively)
    http://<serverip>:1111/admin/getLicenseInfo?auser=<AdminUserId>&apswd=<AdminUserPassword>
    Result displayed should have which edition you are using.
