Flash Memory Vesus Micro Drive

I can't tell whether the difference is due to the manufacturer, the type of memory, or the fact that one unit is made by apple and the other is made by a company geared more toward PCs.
There is a decernible difference in the sound that I get from the same songs on my Nano, and my Creative Zen Touch 20GB micro drive type unit.
Neither actually sounds better, but the Nano seems more crisp, and well defined. The Creative is more bass heavy, and wall-of-sound; good for Springsteen, not so much for Neil Young. I'm wondering if that's a conceptual thing or due to the type of memory being used.
If this is too stupid, you needn't respond.

manufacturer. The only difference a flash vs micro drive plays in terms of how it works is a micro drive may pause a little while operating its normal tasks. It wont effect sound quality.
I'v also personally found the headsets/headphones to cause any differences you may have or dislike, so i wonder if you're using 2 different ones for either or the same for both. Other then that all you can do is play with options to adjust sound and try to use the same headphones.

  • Flash Memory vs Hard Drive

Ok, I am trying to purchase a camcorder for a gift.  It's primary purpose will to be recording children's activities.  I went to Best Buy today looking at the panasonic sdr h80k which has a hard drive.  The sales associate suggested that I may want to consider a flash drive model instead, maybe the CanonFS200.  He suggested this because he said if you drop your HDD then your videos are stuck in the camcorder.
Opinions??  Also, I would love opinions on camcorders - no expensive HDs.  We have no HD units.
    Thanks

BTW, it can get confusing in the arena of camcorders when you say "HD", since some manufacturers use it to mean "hard drive" and others mean "high definition".
It sounds like you are talking about a high definition flash memory camcorder?
I don't know much about Sony high def camcorders, I tend to avoid Sony due to their NIH (Not Invented Here) syndrome - they're notorious for starting format wars and using proprietary memory only usable in Sony devices (like Memory Stick), while nearly everyone else uses standard memory types like Compact Flash or SD/SDHC.
The Canon HF100 is an incredibly well regarded high definition flash camcorder.  The Panasonic SD9 is also well regarded, for me the choice between the two was tough (I can't remember what made me go with the HF100 over the SD9 in the end.)
Define "not newer" as far as your computer?  What processor does it have and how much memory?
It will most likely not be able to play the video from the camcorder directly, that requires a relatively new PC or at least a new video card (GeForce 8000 series or higher for NVidia, ??? for ATi).  Of the 5-6 machines in my house, only my newest one can play back 1080p AVCHD video (the format the camcorders save in) smoothly.
That said, what you can do (and what I do) is archive the original source footage (the 1080p HD stuff), and convert each clip to a lower resolution (easier to play back and edit) and work with the low resolution clips.
As an example, I took about 10 3-5 minute clips of a friend's rock concert last Friday.  I made a backup of the original clips, then used Handbrake (http://www.handbrake.fr/ I think, if that doesn't work Google it) to convert each clip to a 480p clip and worked with those for editing and such.  On my machine the conversion process tool 1.5-2 minutes per minute of video, on an older machine it will take longer, but keep in mind that once you've gotten the conversion settings you want, conversion is a "fire and forget" process - batch up the clips for conversion, start the conversion, and go to bed.  Wake up the next morning and it's done.
*disclaimer* I am not now, nor have I ever been, an employee of Best Buy, Geek Squad, nor of any of their affiliate, parent, or subsidiary companies.

  • USB flash memory stick - 2 drives mount!

    Hi,
When i insert my new "integral" ice flash drive, 2 drives mount on my desktop. Even disk utility sees them as different disks rather than partitions.
I only want one! Any clues?

    Aha, a proper Eureka moment.
Thanks for the tip, and it does exactly what I hoped it would.Thank you, I knew it had to be a simple solution ( too simple for me to work out though ! )

  • Flash Memory / Hard Drive failure

    HP 311-1000 NR
Bought this computer new in 04/2010.  Have used it for nothing but internet and itunes.  Have used it maybe a total of 40 times in 18 months.  Hard drive storage being used was maybe 30GB out of 250GB.
Turned on today, and got a black screen with error message "Flash Memory Error  Hard Drive Failure"
Have not installed any new software in months. Had only been using the computer to visit Nike.com website the night before.
Computer has run it's antivirus and tune-ups without any errors every time I turn it on.  No previous errors or freeze ups prior to this.
Any advice? Is this simply a matter of having the flash memory replaced? Thanks for any time and help.

we need to make sure that the HDD on the com works fine

  • Can I install Windows ON a flash drive or on flash memory?

All over the internet I see questions from people wanting to install Windows from a USB flash drive with varying results, but my question is different.  I want to install Windows ON removable flash memory.  I would like to purchase a MacBook Air, but would like to also continue making use of Boot Camp without taking up too much of my limited hard drive space.  I've found fast 3.0 USB sticks and flash cards that would be nice, but can they be treated as a partition in order to install and run Windows?

Ignoring the fact that Windows doesn't really support booting from removable media (you might be able to force it if you are willing to build a custom installer), I can think of another reason you wouldn'r want to consider this.  Windows is notorious for heavy usage of the swap file, and I believe I recall reading one report where someone had managed to install Windows to a flash drive, and within 30-60 minutes, the OS had written to the swap file so much that the flash memory was beginning to fail.  Remember that each time you write to flash memory, it cases a small amount of damage to the memory, and after a significant number of writed, it will fail.  Regretfully, the Woindows swap file will cause this threshhold to be reached very quickly, and then you start getting write errors...

  • Macbook Pro SATA drive vs Macbook Pro Retina with flash memory?

How fast does the macbook pro with Retina Display and Flash memory work than the macbook pro with SATA hard drive with same configuration?

    kent.229,
given those uses — PowerPoint, Word, Safari, photo storage — you could probably keep your existing MacBook Pro, replace its internal disk with a SSD, and purchase an external drive to store your photos, at a fraction of the price of a replacement MacBook Pro. (You should also purchase an additional external drive for use as a Time Machine backup destination, if you’re not already doing so — you wouldn’t want to lose 10,000 photos due to a filesystem glitch.)

  • Best format for a USB flash memory drive?

I got this flash memory drive - one of those little stick things. It is 1GB. When I plugged it into my Mac it didn't mount, so I reformatted it at Mac Extended Journaled.
I put some photos on it and took it to one of those photo printing machines, but it couldn't mount the drive.
I reformatted it again as Mac Extended (without the journaled), but that didn't help.
What is the recommended format for these drives so they are the most widely compatible with other machines, particular Windows.
    Thanks!

i want my usb drive to be formatted to fat32 system, but disk utility always format it as fat16. i'm having problems copying multiple files onto it under fat16.
i've tried selecting "ms-dos file system" under volume format, but no avail.
    help.

  • IPods for file backup:  hard drives v. flash memory

Is a ‘flash memory’ iPod just as good (i.e., reliable, etc.) as a ‘hard drive’ iPod for backing up files?
    Thanks.

It's actually my understanding that flash memory is slower, but i agree with you that its nice that there are no moving parts, no noise etc. The other thing to be aware of with flash is that the estimated erase/writes over it's lifetime is estimated to be around 100,000. I don't know how long that means it will last, but it does tell us that it has a finite life.

  • Does the iPod Touch use Flash memory, or a hard drive?

I thought that both the Touch and Nano used flash memory, but people on another board are telling me that the Touch uses a hard drive.
    Which is correct?

Should have said Flash memory not Flash drive.

  • Does X-Fi have built in Flash Memory or internal Hard Driv

I can't find any specs on whether the X-Fi's internal storage is flash memory or if it uses a hard dri've.
I know about the SD card slot and I am not referring to that which of course is flash memory. I mean the 8/6/32 gig storage depending on the model.
    Anyone know?

    Hi Merkaba777,
The ZEN X-Fi is flash memory based.

  • Hard Drive Neeon vs. Flash Memory Nee

My new 6GB Zen Neeon with a hard dri've has the annoying 6 to 8 second pauses between each track and quite laggy performance while going through the menus with the scroll button. It takes several seconds to load music and to power down the player too. Would the flash memory version of the Zen Neeon be better in those reguards?
Why are there so few posts concerning the Neeon? Am I one of the only few here who owns one?

I've not got a Neeon, but all the hard disk players are similar to this. Particularly when first playing a song.
Why are there so few posts concerning the Neeon? Am I one of the only few here who owns one?
The Neeon was mostly only for sale in Asia Pacific, although it has come to the USA in small numbers. Hence not many owners, not a lot of posts.

  • Unable to boot from my USB Flash Memory Device

    Hi there,
I recently purchased a macbook pro with the lion 10.7.2 firmware.
I am experiencing problems with my USB Flash memory as when i plug it in it comes up fine on the desktop and i can browse it. The problem is that when i open up an application such as Adobe Fireworks or Netbeans (Java programming) and try and access files from my USB flash drive, my drive does not appear on the list/menu, it only comes up with my macbook pro documents etc.
I have asked friends with Mac's and they tell me they do not experience this problem. Please can you help me whether it is a problem with my settings or any other issues.
    Thank you.

Nope, I dont recieve any massages at all. It just doesnt appear.
Also usually you can drag a file into an application, for example drag an image into photoshop in order to open that image up but this does not work either.

  • I've bought a new USB flash memory. I plugged it in the USB port then a message come out: Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled.... Please help...

I don't know what to do. I plugged that USB in both ports but the same message came out. I charged my laptop and the same thing happened again. The surprising thing is that I tried plugging the USB in my cousins laptop (Macbook Pro) and it worked!!! but not with mine. The USB flash memory made by PNY. Please help...

There are two types of USB 2 devices - low power which consume 100 milliamperes or less from the USB bus and high power which consume up to 500 milliamperes. Your flash drive is probably a high power device and is overloading the USB bus of your computer. (Some notebooks can support only low power USB devices.)
I know that my MBP's USB ports support high power devices but I've come across reports that not all high power devices will work on the MBA and that might be the case for your flash drive. My guess is it has a large capacity? 32GB or more?
