Flash or Fusion Storage!?

Really cannot decide if to get Fusion or Flash Storage when I ordering a new iMac.
I like the idea of fusion but I realise that Flash is the way forward, and In the near future everything will be flash storage, but not so pricey as it is at the moment.
Can anyone let me know the advantages/disadvantages between flash vs fusion? Or if anyone has experianced both, which do you prefer and why?
Any feedback would be hugely appreciated.

  • Adobe Flash FAIL:  Adobe Flash Player local storage settings incorrect.  Module 'Resume' feature may not work on this computer.

Using a Windows 2012 RDS Environment, we have users connecting to a CPD website, and as part of the CPD they need to run a systems checker.  When they run the systems checker they get the following error message: "Adobe Flash FAIL:  Adobe Flash Player local storage settings incorrect.  Module 'Resume' feature may not work on this computer". All users are connecting to this environment with Windows CE Clients,I have checked the setting on Adobe Flash and they seem correct but as each user has its own profile on the RDS session, is there something that I should be setting for each user. I have added the website to the trusted sites and it has made no difference.   Any ideas

It sounds like what's happening is that Flash Player can't write or read from the local shared objects in the user's redirected home directory because we disallow traversing junctions in the broker process.  This behavior was disabled to address a vulnerability identified in some of John Forshaw's research into the IE broker last year.
You can enable this behavior by adding the following setting to mms.cfg:
    EnableInsecureJunctionBehavior=1
That said, you can probably gather from the name of the flag that we don't really recommend this approach, and disable this attack surface by default.  There's some risk that a network attacker could craft content that abuses fundamental issues with how Windows handles Junctions to write to arbitrary locations.
Unfortunately, there's not a simple or easy workaround that I'm aware of (but it's been ages since I've administered a Windows domain) for this kind of NAS/SAN-backed terminal server environment where Flash is not able to access \Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\ without traversing a junction.

  • Can some companies can go around the flash global/website storage settings?

    Hi,
I've experienced this a few times: I've been visiting a website and a Lysol or Spray and Wash ad appears in a flash window and starts to play. I've noticed that it really slows down my older computer, and check (each time) the global and website storage settings on the Adobe site.
What I've see is that it's:
    - from "TV2N"; when I click on it it goes to the website http://www.jdproject.com/
    - when I click on settings I see that the flash settings allow 10K to be stored locally on my computer by "m1.2mdn.net"
I've attached two *.jpegs as evidence of what I'm talking about.
I find this very strange since I've adjusted both my global/website settings to not allow any information to be stored on my computer. So my question is: are some companies going around a users global/website storage settings for the flash player?
Thanks for your time and help.
    Kevin

Does anyone know? Additionally, any insight into how I can get companies to NOT ignore my personal settings would be good.

  • Purchase 2013 iMac, choose Flash or Fusion, have a good backup routine.

I'm debating replacing a 2011 iMac with a BTO 2013 iMac, primarily to get the speed of Flash.
My 2011 does not have SSD and I'm not enthusiastic about the various external Thunderbolt SSD devices available.
I don't process video files and I don't play games. The iMac is used for moderate stuff such as Filemaker, EazyDraw, Safari, Word, Excel, iPhoto, iTunes and Amadeus.
I have a good backup routine: Filemaker, SuperDuper and Time Machine all scheduled to three different external drives.
I currently use about 90 gigs (home folder) out of 1TB on the internal drive and 180 gig of photos and music on an external drive.
I figure I can afford either the 3TB fusion drive or 510meg of SSD.
Thus if price doesn't matter and I have a good backup routine, my choice is probably about device long term reliability.
I have a fair understanding how the Fusion works.
Given the above, which would you choose, 3TB fusion or 512GB Flash ?

A bit more to this. In Energy Saver Settings I've unticked the option "Put hard disks to sleep where possible"
This has stopped the problem, but I am surprised that a system setting that was apparently on by default manage to shutdown my iMac so completely it needed an SMC reset every time.

  • I am buying a new IMac. which is better, the 1TB Flash Drive or the 3TB fusion drive

I am looking to purchase a new IMac. Trying to figure out the best solution for storage. Considering the 1TB falsh drive plus using an external hard drive for additional storage. Alternatively I can get the fusion drive with 3tb hard drive and 128mg flash. Anyone have an opinion which is better

Go with the flash and use usb3 or thunderbolt for storage. Google flash vs fusion and you'll get plenty of articles to help with your decision.

  • Flash audio not working in Firefox 31.0

Flash audio works in Chromium. Have tried the following with no success:
    - Resetting Firefox
    - Reinstalling Flash plugin
Thanks for taking your time to help me out.
    EDIT:
I noticed in about:plugins a listing for "FutureSplash Player". Perhaps that has something to do with the problem?

On Linux Adobe has stopped supporting Flash for Firefox.
There are only security updates of Flash 11.2 available.
If web pages require a more recent Flash version then they won't work with Firefox and you would have to use Google Chrome.
Does this happen with all pages that use the Flash plugin?
Did you check if the player has a volume slider?

  • Flash player do not work correctly on IDN URLs

When FF should show a Flash Player element *.swf from a site with IDN URL something goes wrong and halts. (Things go ok in IE and Opera).
The problem is related to the IDN URL or FF translation of the URL.
An IDN URL in local text may look like this "[http://www.stålberg.se/test/index.html]" (You may not see this correct if this post is not in UNI code and I do not know if it is, sorry) this is translated into "http://www.xn--stlberg-fxa.se/test/index.html"
I can see in the settings for Flash Player, "local storage" that IE is showing the right translated URL, but in FF Flash Player settings for "local storage" shows something at translation with % notation.

It works if I enable punycode by setting the pref network.IDN_show_punycode to true on the about:config page.
Maybe worth filing a bug report about this issue.

  • Flash drive recognized by computer but not opening.

My friend has a HP v240 flash drive with storage capacity 4 GB.
Yesterday I plugged it in my laptop and copied some movies in it. I removed it from the laptop after I was done and then I plugged it in the desktop. There was some message saying the flash drive needs to be formatted before use which i ignored and closed. After that the flash drive wouldn't open. i tried unplugging it and plugged it again but it didn't work. i tried using it in a different port. the computer recognized the pen drive but when i tried opening the removable drive from MY COMPUTER there was a msg saying 'No disc found'. It shows the same message in all the ports and also in my laptop when I tried plugging it there too. I tried all recovery options to make it work including the HP recovery tool but it wouldn't work. I tired all other methods for formatting but i am unable to format it because it shows a message that 'the device has no media'.
    Please Help.

I get to answer my own question. The MacBook Pro did finally recognize the flash drive when I changed the filename of the file I copied to it on the iMac to the fat32 format. (only 8 characters --> 12345678.ext )
Makes no sense to me but I am not an Apple code writer.

  • Flash Cache is not Flash Disk. Right ?

In our Non-Exadata RAC DBs we use LUNs from Hitachi VSP frame. For very busy DBs like Siebel , we wanted to place our Online Redo logs on high speed disks.
So, our Hitachi SAN admins have allocated LUNs exclusively from Flash Disks within Hitachi VSP frame and we have created Redo Log diskgroup based on these 'Thick provisioned' disks.
This has increased the performance of our RAC DBs significantly.
As I understand, In exadata, you don't have the normal flash disk. Instead, the flash modules are mounted in a PCIexpress card.
In CellCLI> list physicaldisk detail you can see multiple entries like below belonging to the 'flash disk'
              name:                   FLASH_1_0
             diskType:               FlashDisk
             luns:                   1_0
makeModel:              "Sun Flash Accelerator F40 PCIe Card"
             physicalFirmware:       UI39
             physicalInsertTime:     2013-09-13T17:56:10+08:00
             physicalSerial:         5L0066Y5
             physicalSize:           93.13225793838501G
slotNumber:             "PCI Slot: 1; FDOM: 0"
             status:                 normal
Although these flash cards can store persistent data because it has battery in it in server goes down, is it actually used to store persistent data.
Smart flash cache is just a caching mechanism for frequently accessed data. Right ? We cannot create diskgroups based on disks from these 'Flash Disks' . Right ?

    Hi GaryB,
The short answer to your question is:  yes, it's possible to use configure flash as permanent storage using "flash griddisks".  But in the case of redo logs, it would actually make them perform slower.
The longer explanation:  foreground redo writes (the "log file sync" wait event) are very latency sensitive, so it's important for write to be acknowledged as fast as possible.  Flash is considerably faster than disk, but not nearly as fast as battery-backed RAM.  And Exadata storage servers do have a RAM write cache on their disk controllers.  So you will get the best foreground redo write performance from RAM cache write, except when the write cache is full, at which point redo writes need to wait on disk.
Since 11.2.2.4.0 was released in 2012, Exadata has the capability to write redo to _both_ RAM-cached disk and flash memory, and use whichever returns first.  So you get the lightning-fast latency of RAM cache unless the cache is full, and worst-case latency is the speed of flash.  This capability, smart flash logging, is enabled by default on new Exadata builds;  you can check its status by running "view flashlog detail" in CellCLI.
More details in the official whitepaper: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/exadata/exadata-smart-flash-cache-366203.pdf
    Hope this helps!

  • 4305g Internal Storage not being recognized

I have a dozen or so DMP 4305g devices and one of them stopped recognizing the internal storage, this is the second or third one I have had do this. Has anyone ran into this problem, do they have a solution? I did a factory reset and nothing. Im up-to-date on all my patches. I dont know what else to do besides get the device and send it back.

    Sorry for the Delay....
    ======================
    DMP Models affected:  DMP-4305G
    Symptom:
DMP flash shows internal storage capacity 0/0 on the DMP-DM and
    the DMM-DSM.
On the DMP-DM, The Internal Storage values will
    show:
    Present     = No
    Access Mode = Read Only
    Capacity    = 0
    Free Space  = 0
    Possible Causes:
    1. The DMP kernel is not detecting the SD flash card after soft reboot.
    2. If the SD card coming up Ready Only(RO) - this could be a timing issue
because the DMP is running fsck on the SD flash card while it's trying
       to mount it, causing RO.
    3. Manufacturing is creating the DMPs with SD flash cards of VFAT formatting
       instead of EXT2
    4. There has been shipping related problems, as the SD flash card might be
coming loose and dislodging. As a result, the SD flash card NOT mounting.
    5. SD flash card hardware failure itself.
    Workaround\Fix:
    For Cause #1
"Hard" reboot would always fixed this.
This is mostly solved in 5.2, with the latest kernel patch.
    For Cause #2
This can be resolved via MIB variables.
TAC or Support engineer can SSH to the DMP and run the "mount"
command to see if the SD flash card mounts.
    For Cause #3
Please Open a Cisco TAC Case to have the DMP RMA'd.
    For Cause #4
Please Open a Cisco TAC Case to have the DMP RMA'd.
** NOT supported but a support engineer could open the DMP
to see & verify that the SD flash card has NOT dislodged.
    Reseat SD flash card.
    For Cause #5
Please Open a Cisco TAC Case to have the DMP RMA'd.
    IMPORTANT NOTE TO REMEMBER:
Open a Cisco TAC Case to have the DMP RMA'd seems to be the
official/legal/contractual way for recovering this issue, since opening
    a DMP voids its warranty.
We will need to capture this data so we can determine root cause and trace back to source.
Especially with the rate you are outlining here this is something we need to investigate.
However if the adhesive holding the SD cards is broken the investigators may question that.
Please do not tamper with any DMP's so they can be investigated properly.
    Cheers
    T.

  • Mavericks Indexing USB flash: Does by buying a new drive help?

I see many people have the slow indexing of USB flash drives issue with Mavericks.  Are any brands of flash drives better than others at playing with Mavericks, or will replacing my flash not make a difference?

The 4GB iPod nano will have 3.7GB of usable capacity, and an 8GB iPod nano will have about 7.5GB. If you choose a 2GB iPod nano, you will be able to store roughly 1.9GB of data on it.
The iPod nano uses a flash drive for storage.

I use 32Gb flash drives for storage. One recently has started running very slowly - is this a functiuon of flash drives or is there something I can do you re-invigorate it?

If possible you could try formatting it. Firstly head to disk utility (you can search for it in spotlight search). Secondly click on the disk you want to format and click format, make sure Mac OS journaled (or extended) is selected as the option. Good luck!
