Flash or Micro Dr
Hi,
I'd really like to pick up one of Creative's micro-dri've audio players as a Christmas present, but have a question related to type of storage system and usage.
I would assume zero movement of a micro-dri've based player is better than even a little movement, but from a practical perspecti've, what are anyone's experiences / recommendations with using a micro-dri've player while doing light housekeeping or perhaps while on an elliptical machine?
Thanks,
David
The thing Creative recommend you don't do with it is jogging, that is jogging where the player is attached to you in some way therefore receiving transferred shock. If you are using a running machine, or a machine where you can put the player at rest on some part of the machine you won't transfer any shock to it.

Microdrive vs Internal Flash vs Micro SD
http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/template.MAXIMIZE/menuitem.f085a4ec7dad63efc0baade1eac4f0a0...
mentions the possibility of 20GB microdrives (1 inch - I've seen 1.8 inch providing up to 60GB, but they won't fit in phones without making them a fair bit bigger), but Hitachi still seem to only offer 8GB models, but it seems that internal flash memory might be overtaking that (the iPod touch can already be shipped with 16GB), and O2 are now shipping 8GB micro SD cards with their N95s.
So, which technologies are going to win the capacity battle in mobile phones? Will it be flash, or will the 1 inch microdrives finally get the capacity of their 1.8 inch brethren and march ahead?Yeah. Flash memory based on NAND technology needs to increase it's durability before it can be considered to replace HDD.
Flash memory either on board or in the form of a Memory card has a very limited lifespan. They work for storing data that's static. Meaning you read it but you seldom write to it.
Laptops use the HDD to read/write many many times per day!. A flash memory will die in a few weeks at the latest.
Solid state memory is not very solid
Magnetic media is more prone to physical damage (corrosion, impact, etc) but in normal operation lasts very long.
Flash memories is very resilient to impact and other physical types of damage but in mormal operation doesn't last very long. (Number of Write cycles per block).
uSD and other memory cards it's just a NAND flash memory chip with a controller interface. So in a nutshell it's the same as onboard flash. Same actual memory type. It's just that on board you can access the memory differently as you don't have to go through the card interface chip.
640K Should be enough for everybody

Flash Memory Vesus Micro Drive
I can't tell whether the difference is due to the manufacturer, the type of memory, or the fact that one unit is made by apple and the other is made by a company geared more toward PCs.
There is a decernible difference in the sound that I get from the same songs on my Nano, and my Creative Zen Touch 20GB micro drive type unit.
Neither actually sounds better, but the Nano seems more crisp, and well defined. The Creative is more bass heavy, and wall-of-sound; good for Springsteen, not so much for Neil Young. I'm wondering if that's a conceptual thing or due to the type of memory being used.
If this is too stupid, you needn't respond.manufacturer. The only difference a flash vs micro drive plays in terms of how it works is a micro drive may pause a little while operating its normal tasks. It wont effect sound quality.
I'v also personally found the headsets/headphones to cause any differences you may have or dislike, so i wonder if you're using 2 different ones for either or the same for both. Other then that all you can do is play with options to adjust sound and try to use the same headphones. -
Is Flashing Dangerous (Mic
How dangerous is it to flash a micro ... I just got mine today and am thinking of going . ... but i li've in a far of region of asia and if the flash goes bad it will cost me like 50$ just to ship it to creative . Is there a safe method of flashing or just the standard one ...
Also when is the next micro firmware due ... Hopefully the one that merges playforsure and battery bug fixes ...
Txking_huzi wrote:
My firmware is .0.03 and i want to go . .. but acc to the faq v dosnt support WM0 but mine seems to support it ... so im kinda confused whether .0 is v or v2 ...
It does support it, but it doesn't support it to the extent that MTP does i.e. without drivers.
Also please can u briefly outline the safe flashing pointers ...
I have downloaded the . executable from nomadness ... Do i just connect the micro and run the exe ...
Yep, just connect and run. That's all I did, and that's what the instructions are on the download page.
Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question .. but i have to be sure ... The adapter i got with my micro says 00-220 (bought in canada) ... I li've in asia .. 220v 50Hz ... Is this a true uni'versal adapter and can be used safely at 220v ...
Yes, it's multi-voltage and can safely be used. It will work from 50-60Hz I believe. -
Strange problem with zen micro (I'm going mad!!
merry xmas!! I've bought a zen micro in seprember, flashed with .xx firmware; I always used it with windows 2000 with no problem, but... problems began when I've installed a pci card usb 2.0 on my pc; the card worked finely with everything but not with zen micro, that's to say that everytime I tried to import songs by media explorer, the program often wasn't able to import songs; so I've installed windows xp and flashed zen micro with 2.xx firmware (I've installed also service pack 2 and wmp0), but things have gone wrong!!! now everytime I connect zen micro to pc, xp asks the drivers, and it doesn't want neither the driver I've found on creative's cd, nor drivers downloaded from creative's site!! And it's not finished: now zen micro is without firmware and everytime I'm trying to flsh it, a dialogue box says that the player is not connect!!!
can anybody help me? otherwise I'll have to write to creative support for a substitution...
please help me!!!!!Strange. Unfortunately MTP connection problems are very tricky to solve. It's hard to know whether the firmware upgrade was partially successful, and whether you are on v or v2 firmware. It sounds like v2 firmware, due to the connection problems with MTP.
The drivers for the v2 firmware are provided by Windows Media Player 0, and are located in the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory. You could try pointing there.
As the player has no firmware though you have to go into recovery mode, choose "reload firmware", then connect to the PC (see if it's detected) and run the firmware update again.
If this doesn't work try and find another PC, say a friend's, that meets the requirements of Win XP + SP/2 + WMP0, and see if you can update.
In terms of resolving the connection problem if it continues, have a look at this thread, particularly the reply by DM, which goes through some of the troubleshooting to solve MTP connection problems. Also look for the link "problems with connecting using MTP firmware" in the FAQ post. -

How do you restore a depleted batte
I was going through the trouble shooting on the site and it seems like the problem with my player falls in that category as it doesnt want to recharge no matter what?i do. The site says "Restoring the power to depleted battery" but only gives the symptoms without any "how to". How do you do that? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Oh and btw, a few weeks before that I already upgraded to the latest firmware. Also I am not really sure i can do that anymore because when i connect via USB port to the computer, the computer doesnt really let me install the creative software as it seems like it doesnt recognize the player (even tho i get a new hardware pop up).

Use WMI to Associate win32_SerialPort device with win32_LogicalDrive mapping
Hi,
My c# application requires to flash a micro-controller, which has been configured as a removable device and is connectable by means of a Virtual Com Port.
So, I need to recognise the volume label of the mapped drive and perform the flash using a simple file copy.
The problem is that some of the micro-controllers produce slightly different volume labels making it difficult to identify all possible cases via string comparison.
I know how to retrieve drive info for removable devices using DriveInfo.GetDrives(). This gives me the drive letter and the volume label
removableDriveList = (List<RemovableDrive>)DriveInfo.GetDrives()
.Where(d => d.DriveType == DriveType.Removable)
.Select(s => new RemovableDrive
Drive = s.Name,
Label = s.VolumeLabel
}).ToList();
I know how to detect the com port and recognisable description of the development boards using WMI to query Win32_SerialPorts.
ManagementObjectCollection collection;
using (var searcher = new ManagementObjectSearcher(@"Select * From Win32_SerialPort"))
collection = searcher.Get();
var removableDevices = from ManagementObject x in collection
where x.Properties["Name"].Value.ToString().Contains("MyManufacturer")
select x;
portName = (String)(removableDevices.First().GetPropertyValue("DeviceID"));
However, I can't associate the virtual com port with the drive mapping. I want to be able to say, this device with ID COM7, manufacturer "MyManufacturer", matches drive mapping "I:\My_Microcontroller".
I noticed (from device manager properties) that they both have the same container ID and are derived from the same usb controller, however I don't know how to access the this information from each child using WMI. Is this possible?
ThanksHello Marcpolo,
I move it to the desktop forum since it is more related with Windows Management Instrumentation development.

E1200 - the Partial Reponse Mystery
Hi all, I have a perplexing problem I've never seen. Ideas? Solutions? I'd love to hear them all.
The bug:
HTTP(S) responses hang indefinitely partially through the response, but only over wireless.
The setup:
Linksys E1200v2, purchased 3 weeks ago, has the latest firmware (2.0.06)
WPA2 Personal
Details:
I've been debugging this via Fiddler and Charles. Here is exactly what happens. For certain URLs, (only a few), the HTTP request sends find, the HTTP response begins correctly, but then somewhere in the first 50 KB of response, the request hangs. It never timeouts. It never terminates. It just hangs.
I've noticed at least twice.
1- YouTube requests. When attempting to transfer video/mp4 from *.googlevideo.com, the request dies at 13140 bytes. If I plug in an Ethernet, it works. This is true for two different laptops. It's always 13140 bytes.
2- SpeedTest.net When attempting to download jQuery.js from c.speedtest.net, the request dies at 37922 bytes. As before, this is only over WiFi.
Other URLs work just fine, and websites load correctly 90% of the time.
I've updated firmware, done factory resets, tried 30/30/30 resets, changed WiFi encryption and MTU, turned off UPnP and WMM, but nothing chnages. WiFi chokes and hangs.
So, any ideas?Hi,
I was able to observe this before but with mediafire's servers using Dolphin Browser on Linux. It won't actually kill the connection, it will just stay on 'waiting..' status on Dolphin and it will resume if I'll switch from wireless to wired connection. I guess this has nothing to do with E1200 as I've observed this using an ASUS RT-N10U configured as an access point with Shibby's version of Tomato Firmware.
I believe this is something within the WLAN standards and it's present on 802.11n. I can try to check this on my WRT54G v5 flashed with micro version of DD-WRT firmware - if it's also happening with 802.11g, but the question is - why?
If everyone needs to believe in something, I believe I'll have another beer.. -
Zen Sleek Photo Transfer Probl
For the past 2 weeks or so my Zen will not upload music files. The software does not recognize that it is connected at all. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and also following the suggestions provided on the site. Is there anything else I can do?
Also, another minor problem is that it does not display the name of the songs that are playing.. instead it says select music to playI hope you know that there is more than one Zen?

Creative Zen wont start up - or shutdown prope
Hi!
3 weeks ago I bought a Creative Zen, which I ve been glad for so far, but today my player suddenly stopped playing, and the display showed that there werent a lot of battery on it. So I tried to shut it down and recharge it, but somehow I cant shut it down, the screen is all black and shows the battery "situation", but nothing happens when I shut it down, I ve also tried to plug it into my PC but the pc cant recognise the player as long as it wont start.
So now my very big question for you out there is, what to do next

Flash videos suffering from intermittent "micro-freezes" in animation
Hello, I have been having issues lately with the latest version 12.0070 flash plugin causing flash based videos to have what I call "mirco freezes" or mircostutter, where a frame in the video freezes for a like a few milliseconds every so often. I ran DTC latency checker and got in the low 100's of microseconds of latency which is normal, even with no video playback. CPU usage is at 10% or less during video playback. I have done complete uninstall of flash, including the registery entry removal and folder removal, but even with fresh install, whether it be ActiveX version for IE or the plugin version for other browsers, still has the microstutter issues during video playback. I also upated all drivers and disabled hardware acceleration. For a final test, I disabled startup items with Msconfig, but I still get the microstutters in flash videos................So here is all I know to do is post my PC info and process monitor log file in the hopes that some bright computer programmer on here can see what is going on.......

I cannot add a site to the list of allow micro sites on Flash Player settings manager
I cannot add a site to the list of allow micro sites on Flash Player settings manager.
as Adobe says at his help document (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlayer/LSM/WS6aa5ec234ff3f285139dc56112e3786b68c-7ff8.htm l):
Displays a list of previously visited websites that have asked to use the camera or microphone on your computer. You can allow or block the use of your camera and microphone by sites on the list. You can also ask to be prompted for permission to use them. Finally, you can choose to remove sites from the list. Removing a site deletes all settings and data stored for that site in Flash Player.
The list initially contains only the sites you have already visited. If you want to specify camera and microphone settings for sites you have not yet visited, you can choose to add sites to the list. Once a site is on the list, you can specify whether to always allow camera and microphone use, ask permission, or never allow camera and microphone use by that site.
I cannot find any button to add a website. Can you help me please.
Thanks in advanced
