Flash Player 10.1 hardware acceleration problems

Just to join the chorus of people having problems with this, we have a custom Flash based video player which is showing behaviour that resembles packet loss when playing back streaming media, ie blocks of empty green content on the frame.
The thing is there is no packet loss. This happens in any browser running Flash 10.1, however in those same browsers if we turn hardware accelleration off in the Flash settings menu the problem goes away. All machines this is occuring on are running OS and GPU chipset combinations which are listed as being compatible with Flash 10.1 h/w accelleration.
What I'd like to know from Adobe is, will someone be identifying why this is happening? e.g. is this simply a mis-match between GPU and Flash?
Its difficult to imagine users with 10.1 installed being able or willing to either disable accelleration or even worse have to upgrade their video drivers?
thanx in advance,
Dean Stringer

You have correctly identified the cause of the display problems; video drivers that do not fully support hardware acceleration, and must therefore either be updated, or hardware accleration turned off.

  • Flash player hanging with hardware acceleration enabled

I'm having the following problem: The Flash player is working fine for some apparently random period of time, then it hangs when it is starting up in order to display a video.  This appears to happen only when hardware acceleration is enabled.  (I have not noticed any problems with hardware acceleration disabled, but I only discovered 24 hours ago that this helped.).  The hang happens under all web browsers (Firefox reports that the Flash player crashed, but it is actually hung on start up, not crashed).  After a hang occurs, trying to view any other Flash video also hangs, and all other programs that attempt to access the video card like Windows Media Player also hang.  The only way to reset things and get video working again is to reboot the machine.
I suspect the problem is either the Flash player or the machine's graphics driver.  I'm running Flash Player WIN 10,1,53,64 under Windows 7 64 on an Intel Core i5 machine with Intel GMA HD graphics, driver version 8.15.10.2025.
BTW, is there anyway to permanently disable Flash's use of hardware acceleration? (if I disable, the setting doesn't seem to want to stay)

Thanks.  The computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad T510.  Intel's utility reports:

A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your  computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the  driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized  computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.

  • Linux Flash Player woes with hardware acceleration

I am trying to get hardware accelerated Youtube video on my Ubuntu 10.04 box. There is nothing unusual about the hardware: Intel C2D, 945G chipset, and nVidia GT210 graphics. (also tried 9600GT and GT440 without success). The OS, nVidia driver, and libvdpau have been kept up-to-date thru Update Manager and Synaptic . But among Flash Player 10.3, 11.0, 11.1, and 11.2 beta that I have tried, none can work consistently with video rendering and video decoding enabled by having "EnableLinuxHWVideodecode=1" to /etc/adobe/mms.cfg. It doesn't matter which version of Firefox I use, or whether the libflashplayer.so is placed in local plugins directory or global.
    - Flash Player 10.3 is perfect until it reaches the end of the clip. Click on Replay at that time, the player rewinds and starts to play. But there is only audio. The video window becomes solid black.
    - Flash Player 11.0 and 11.1 have no accelerated video rendering until I go full screen. Once with accelerated rendering, they have the same problem with replay as 10.3.
    - Flash Player 11.2 beta crashes frequently when I switch video size from the default 360p to something else, or change player mode from default small player to full screen.
11.2 beta seems to be free from the replay issue. But I cannot try enough videos to be certain because usualy it crashes before reaching the end of clips. As 10.3, 11.0, and maybe even 11.1 are already legacy, my only hope is Adobe can make the 11.2 stable for Linux before it is locked down for release. Am I alone on this or there are other Linux users out there having similar problems?
    Thanks

    Hi Alex1113,
Thanks for your reply and filing of bug 3077372. I searched the BugBase and found another recent report (https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3075575) on 11.2_p3 crash. It happens when switching to "Larger Player" video size. Since I have seen both types of problems, I voted for both ID 3077372 and 3075575 with comments instead of filing duplicated reports.
    To others,
The crash seems to be rather gneric. So far it has been reported for Fedora 14, Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 11.10, 32-bit, and 64-bit. I believe it should happen to other configurations with both hardware render and decoding enabled. Please add your votes to raise the priorities of those bugs. Hopefully we will draw enough attention to have them fixed in the next beta.
    Thanks,
    Franklin

  • Flash Player 10.3.181.34 Problems

    Hello Peeps
there is a problem in latest update of flash player, i m using Chrome as my browser, version older than this was not having this issue i.e: i can't see video in full screen until i uncheck option: Enable Hardware Acceleration from settings option, after it i can view video in full screen, before this release it was going fine idk what happened in this version? i've tried Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, all have same issue
i thought its problem of my graphics card but i've changed that too, still the problem is same, it needs to be rechecked
    thank you!

Dell notoriously offers old drivers.  If I remember correctly, the GX 270 has an Intel display adapter; go to http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect to check for driver updates.

  • Flash player 10.1 video quality problem

Ever since I installed this version of flash player, the quality of streamed video has been absolutely horrible (Mostly on youtube and hulu).  Many of the videos should be in HD quality but are pixelated and fuzzy (especially when there is a lot of movement in the video) and it's appearance is similar to 240p or even worse. Shortly after having this issue, I unistalled the new update and reinstalled the previous version, which was more trouble than I expected, and the videos for the most part were fine. I eventually tried installed the latest update again and the problem is still there.  It's the same both in firefox and chrome and it makes videos almost unwatchable.
    So what is the problem?

Hi, many users have found improvement by turning off the hardware acceleration which is turned on by default with the FP 10.1. Just right click on a youtube video and change the Setting, Display Settings Panel.
Also it is recommended to update graphic and video drivers to the latest versions. Whether you need to do this you would know.
    Thanks,

  • New Flash Plugin update with hardware acceleration freezes Youtube videos

Hello, two days ago i got a prompt for a new flash plugin update, saying that now it was able to use hardware acceleration on MAC too. I did the update but i noticed that with hardware acceleration enabled, any youtube video i see, safari freezes. Seems like it's loading continuously (even if the progress bar of the video is already red). But as soon as i disable hardware acceleration, all goes back as normal, no freeze. What's the problem? Using the last safari version.

  • Immidiate crash of Flash, unable to disable hardware acceleration. Solved!

Flash video/content crashes instantly, so it makes it impossible to right-click it and enter the settings to disable hardware acceleration. This issue wasn't solved for over 2 years in other forum posts, but I finally did it. You have to temporarily DISABLE all your recording and playback devices in the windows' sound menu. this will let you play flash content (it did help me), just enough to disable hardware accelertion. I am suprized Mozilla survived despite being unable to debug their own software - no respect to customers ad their time.

Flash is developed by Adobe, not Mozilla. Though the good news is that Firefox is creating their own flash player that should be in a near-future version of Firefox.

  • Flash Player 9 - OS X install problem

I downloaded the latest version and am trying to install on
my MacBook. OS is 10.5.2. After quitting Firefox and Safari I
launched the installer, and it went fine until I reached "Items
remaining to be installed: 4". It hung there with the
    blue-and-white barber-pole progress meter spinning endlessly. I
left it for 20 minutes, came back, no change. Figuring it may have
had something to do with my external drives and VPN shared folders,
I disconnected them and rebooted so that no storage was attached
    (other than the internal HD).
Same problem - hangs at "items remaining to be installed: 4".
It's using 100% of the CPU cycles according to Activity Monitor.
Has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions on what to do
    to complete the installation?
    Thanks,
    Dan

Don't give up so quickly. You need to tell the agent
-specifically- what you've done for testing. Have you run
permission repair? If so please tell them that. Try to be as
    detailed and systematic as possible.
Also, they're asking you to create a new Admin account and
see if you can install FP9 to that account. That is an important
step because it helps us isolate OS issues from player issues. So
please do that and reply back to the case..

  • Flash Player 11.6.180 youtube problem

Hi, I have trouble using the arrow key to scroll up and down on youtube, This problem happened after I upgrade my flash player from 11.2 to 11.6. When I pause or click anything on the flash pane, I cannot control the page using arrow key. The only way is to switch tab. I have reinstall version 11.2 and everytime I want to view any video, the message vulnerable flash player version occured. Please help

Thanks for adding the bug report.  I tried this out on Chrome, Firefox, and IE on Windows and in all cases I can confirm that the arrow keys do not allow the page to be scrolled while the flash content has the focus (ie. it was clicked last.)
However, I believe this is a feature of the YouTube player and not a Flash bug.  Pressing up and down on the arrow keys increases or decreases the YouTube player's volume.  Pressing left or right changes the playback position.  I found that I could use scroll the page again by simply clicking off the video and into the html content.
I would suggest posting this over on the YouTube forums and asking them to reconsider their current approach.

  • Adobe Flash with R9 290 Hardware Acceleration Black Videos

I am not sure what causes this bug. I can restart the computer and it fixes the issue but randomly after a while it goes back to black. I can disable hardware acceleration and sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. There are 2 other people I know that had this issue. This happens to me both in Firefox and Chrome.
    http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2179088/290-black-screen-issue-possibly-due-adobe-f lash.html#14303459
I would report it to the bug site but it seems to be broken.
    Images:
    R9 290 Black Video Bug - Imgur

With hardware acceleration, we basically just hand everything off to the video card driver.  It's pretty much an on/off proposition.  My recommendation would be to install the latest AMD drivers that match that chipset to see if there are bugfixes that the OEM hasn't picked up.  Ongoing driver updates on these OEM cards typically aren't as good as what you'd get from an AMD-branded card, but the AMD drivers will typically work (but are unsupported) for the cards made by third-party integrators.  Just set a system restore point or keep a copy of the OEM drivers handy in the odd case you need to roll back.
If you're experiencing this with hardware acceleration disabled, make sure that you're looking at Flash video.  YouTube serves a lot of HTML5 video these days.  If you right click on it and it says About HTML5, disabling hardware acceleration in Flash isn't going to help you.
Anyway, if you're for sure looking at Flash videos that aren't rendering and hardware acceleration is disabled, please send me an exact link to the video that reproduces it.
In addition, detailed information about your OS and the browser version would be helpful in attempting to reproduce it on our end.
    Thanks!

  • ADOBE FLASH PLAYER 10.2.159.1 PROBLEM

I'VE BEEN TRYING ALL DAY TO INSTALL AN ADOBE FLASH PLAYER (THE ADOBE FLASH PLAYER I'VE USED FOR MONTHS JUST DISAPPEARED).  I HAVE AN ACER ASPIRE, USE WINDOWS 7, 32 BIT AND, WHILE NOT A TECH OF ANY SORT, I CAN CERTAINLY FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.
AS A STARTING POINT, HOW WOULD A PERSON INSTALL ADOBE FLASH PLAYER ON A LAPTOP WHICH HAS NO SUCH PLAYER?
NOTE: I'VE TRIED EVERYTHING PROMISING ONLINE, AND COME TO A TOTAL STOP AFTER PRESSING THE "DOWNLOAD" BUTTON IN WHICHEVER PROGRAM. AT THAT POINT, AN "ADOBE FLASH" SCREEN APPEARS, INFORMING ME I MIGHT ENCOUNTER 4 PROBLEMS (AND PRESUMABLY WHAT TO DO IF I GET ONE). HOWEVER, THIS PAGE IS A TOTAL DEAD END, AS THERE IS NO WAY TO PROCEED WITH THE DOWNLOAD. THE ONLY THING I CAN DO WITH THIS PAGE IS TO READ IT.
SO, PLEASE, CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME A SHORT STEP-BY-STEP THROUGH DOWNLOADING THE FLASH PLAYER, ESPECIALLY WHEN GETTING TO THE DEAD END PAGE, ABOVE. IT SHOULD BE SIMPLE.
ALSO, CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN WHY ADOBE REMAINS OUT OF THE LOOP ON THIS ONE (EXCEPT FOR THE OPPOPRTUNITY TO SPEND AN (APPARENTLY UNLIMITED) AMOUNT OF MONEY ON THE BLIND HOPE I CAN GET AN ANSWER FROM SOME TECH STRANGER.
ALSO, I SHOULD ADD, I'M NOT ASKING FOR A THESIS ON THE SUBJECT AS IT SHOULDN'T TAKE MORE THAN A FEW STEPS.  FOR EXAMPLE, STEP 1. MIGHT BE 'GO TO WWW.ADOBE.COM/FLASH PLAYER.COM".  SOMETHING LIKE THAT IS ALL I REALLY NEED FOR EACH STEP; YOU DON'T HAVE TO START WITH BENJAMIN FRANKLIN'S DISCOVERIES IN ELECTRICITY; OR PRATE ON ABOUT ACTIVE-X FILES, SECURITY PROBLEMS, 32 BIT VS. 64 BIT STUFF, .ETC.
THANKS, IN ADVANCE TO ANYONE WHO CAN HELP ME GET A FLASH PLAYER DOWNLOADED.
    CUBAN PETE 1941

Sorry, I could read only the first paragraph you wrote, then my eyes grew very tired and I couldn't continue.  It is very hard to read ALL-CAPS postings!
But I understand that you need instructions to reinstall Flash Player; try this
    download the FP uninstaller from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html and save it to disk;
    download the FP installer(s) from http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html and save it/them to disk - note that there are two different installers, the ActieX for Internet Explorer, and the plugin for all other browsers;
close all browser instances, then run the downloaded uninstaller, followed by the installer(s).
Now go to http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ - if you can see the Flash animation (rotating red 'F'), then Flash Player is correctly installed and working.
