Flash Player Server?

This is just a thought and I like to know if this would be feasible.
It seems everyone believes HTML 5 is the future and I do understand there are some cross compiling efforts being researched. I do not believe anyone wants to lose the investment they have in their current applications nor do they want to rewrite them. So I was wondering if it would be possible to serve the necessary portions of a flex app as HTML. Does this make sense? I guess my idea being that rather than loading an entire 4 MB SWF the server would send to the client only what was necessary for the current screen as HTML. I do not know if this would be possible but I do know I do not like JavaScript I would love to continue far into the future using action script.
I find it interesting that the writing appears to be on the wall for the future of flash and all the bad talk of plug-ins that Google has their own little project that speaks of using a virtual machine which in my estimation is still additional software to get past HTML limitations and cross browser issues.

• Installing Flash Player 12 on Windows Server 2008 R2 X64 with IE 8

I have an app that runs on Windows Server 2008 R2 X64 that requires Flash Player 12. When I try to install Flash Player 12 it says that Windows Server R2 X64 is not supported by way of eliminating it from the list of supported operating systems. When I do a search I can find many people who indicate they have it running or explain "hacks" to get it running. Since the app requires it there is an implimcation that it should be running on this OS. What is the offical word on this? This is a production server and I really don't want an "unsupported hack" running in this environment. Is there a supported means of having Flash Player 12 run on Windows Server 2008 R2 X64 with IE8 even if it is within the 32 bit version of the browser?

Server 2008 (x86) is supported, and I had an x64 machine set up last month that had FP12 installed and running in IE and Firefox. 64 bit IE wouldn't run it for some reason, but the 32 bit did. It installed in C/Windows/System32/Macromed/Flash and C/Windows/SysWOW64/Macromed/Flash, but I was unable to get the ActiveX plug-in to enable outside of 32 bit IE.
I also set up a Server 2012 machine that DID support the x64 ActiveX, but that's probably not an option for you.
Like you, I'd be leery of "hacks" to get it to run as an x64 pkug-in, as it may have unintended and undesired consequences in other areas.

• Flash Player 11_8_800_94 on Terminal Server

Hi
I have a problem with the newest Version of Flash Player on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server.
I have installed Flash as Administrator with "change user /install". Everything works fine as Administrator but as a normal User with User Rights I can not see Flash in the Plugins.
I found thousands of articels with older Versions but nothing helped me.
Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit
IE 9
Flash Player 11_8_800_94
Has someone a Idea?
Thanks
Werrner

If you open Internet Explorer - In the menue "Extras" - "Manage Plugins"
Normally her are all installed Plugins listed. As Administrator I can see the "Shockwave Flash Object" and "Shockwave ActiveX Control". If I log on with a account which has only User rights this Plugins are not listed.
If I open "www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/" in the IE it works as Administrator. As User it likes to install the Flash player again.
I think that some Security settings in the Registry are wrong but I don't know which one.
Thanks

• SCORM (flash Player Content) not working on Windows Server 2012 R2 which has IE11 integrated installed on it.

Hi Everyone,
I have website which contains SCORM package, installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 which has IE11 installed on it.
Flash Player is also embedded with IE.
IE Version: 11.0.9600.17278.
Updated Version: 11.0.12 (KB2977629)
When I launch SCORM (flash Player Content) from my application, it is not working. It just displays a blank page however the Title of IE is set to the text from the SCORM content.
However if I access the same URL from any other machine which has previous version of Windows OS (i.e. previous to Windows 8 OS), it is working as expected on IE9, IE10 and IE11.
While trying to find out the cause, I came across some forum which says we have to install the “Desktop Experience” on the server to enable the inbuilt flash player. After doing that also, My SCORM contents are not getting displayed.
To find out more details, I have uploaded the SCORM Package on SCORM Cloud to check if it is working there. Here again the same problem, it doesn’t work and displays
error message saying that “Member is not found” and when I tried to find out the location of the error then it is coming at
Windows.document.myFlash.setVariable(…) method on the Windows Server 2012 R2 with IE11.
When I performed “Addwatch”, it is saying that Windows.document.myFlash doesn’t have setVariable(…) method.
However if access the same cloud URL from other machine (Having OS previous to Windows 8 OS), it is working as expected.
I have attached the screenshot of the error.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello,
I'd ask the SCORM package provider or in Microsoft's ASP.Net forums:
http://forums.asp.net/
As Microsoft's ASP.Net forums are on a different platform, we cannot move the question for you.

• "Server Not Found" Message when downloading Flash Player

Hello,
I am trying to download Macromedia Flash Player using my
Firefox browser, but when I click on "Download Now" an error
message appears:
"Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at fpdownload.macromedia.com.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or
proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."
There is no such problem when I use Internet Explorer, but my
preferred browser is Firefox. Is there any reason why Firefox can't
access the server? Or is there another site I can download Flash
from?
I downloaded the latest Firefox version a couple of days ago,

I use Windows ME.

• Flash player crash accessing Adobe Media Server website

Hi,
Accessing Adobe Flash Media server family website http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/
today on Internet Explorer 6, Mozilla Firefox 3.5, 3.6 (I tried both)
I am using Windows XP version 2002 service pack2 and Flash Player 9 r 124
I upgraded to Flash Player 10.0.32.18 but still the problem persists.
One more information, I installed Microsoft Silverlight 3 today on my machine before.
I am not sure this might be a cause, so I uninstalled Silverlight, but the 'media server website' still crashes the browser.
Quick reply appreciated.
Thanks,
Ram Manoj Kongara.

An important update.
I logged a bug FP-4185 under flash player.
Here are the concise steps to reproduce the issue.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Access the website http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/
2. When the page is getting loaded and video streaming load animation starts
3. After 2 seconds the Browser crashes.
Few things that I did prior to the error occured.
Updated Mozilla Firefox to 3.6 version.
Installed Microsoft Silverlight 3.0
If firefox could be a reason, then browser crashed in IE6 too.
If installing Silverlight affected the Flash player crash when streaming, I uninstalled Microsoft Silverlight, but the flash player persisted with crashing accessing the website.
I tried installing Microsoft Silverlight on few machines in a Net Cafe and tried to access the website with flash video streaming, the browser did not crash.
So there is no reproducible scenario apart from my own Computer.
The browser crash is reproducible every time on my machine.

• Server-side flash player version detection

Does anyone know of a method to pull the users flash-player
version number (the entire thing, not just
">6" or "9" but
"9,0,115,0") that does not use browserhawk. We
are building a troubleshooting page for our LMS built on ASP.net,
and do not want to use javascript, or vbscript to pull the version
number. We can use a javascript method if absolutely necessary, but
want to explore any server-side methods we can use first. We don't
want to use browserhawk as it is wholly too expensive for our
purposes.

I have done that temporarily, but we were hoping to do this
without placing a Flash SWF on the page. We are building a
troubleshooting page, and want to keep as many variables out of the
calculations as we can. IE, if Javascript is the issue, then a
Javascript to tell us the Flash version would be a bad idea. If
Flash is the issue, then a flash element would be a bad idea. If we
keep all of the calculations on the server-side, and not on the
client-side, then we know that nothing of the clients is messing
with the information displayed.

• Issues in running flash player activeX on 64 bit windows 2008 R2 server

When the activeX acts up, users can not type anything into search boxes or use the keyboards in online game sites. From time to time, we have to re-install flash player again.
We noticed that the FlashUtil64 activeX dll is somehow saved in c:\windows\system32\Macromed\Flash folder while the FlashUtil32 activeX dll is in c:\windows\syswow64\Macromed\Flash folder, is this normal? And when running 32 IE, the flashutil64 shown in the windows running process.
We installed flash player with 32 bit IE 10 on a 64 bit windows 2008 R2 server.
Thanks.

It seems you have used 32bit installers on 64bit machine. Please refer -

Hi,
I have installed the latest version of the Flash Player for Windows Server 2012, but I get the error message: "An error has been encountered. Close the window and downloading again".
I closed the window and downloaded again however I am still getting the same error message. I followed all the steps described on this link: Problemas de instalación | Flash Player | Windows but still getting the same error.
Any help?
Thanks in advance,

Hi Andres,
Are you using the online shim installer (about 1 MB in size) downloaded from get.adobe.com/flashplayer, or the offline installer (about 17 MB in size)?

• Internal update server and flash player 12

We've been using an internal update server and a deployed mms.cfg to point internal client machines to a local webserver hosting Flash Player updates extracted from the background update .cab file, as detailed in the Administration Guide.
This has been working well for Windows & OS X clients.
For Flash Player 12, I've created a "12" folder at the same level as the 11 folder:
https://servername.domain/pub/flashplayer/update/current/sau/12/xml/version.xml
However, clients (that are currently running 11) are looking for:
https://servername.domain/pub/flashplayer/update/current/sau/11/xml/version.xml
So I copied the "12" folder to the "11" folder and manually triggered the scheduled task on a couple of clients and they've grabbed the newer version (except for the plugin-based browser, which haven't updated and are still using 11.9.*).
My flashinstall.log shows the following:

My questions:
1) Is this the expected method for getting version 11 to upgrade to 12 without much intervention?
2) What's triggering the error codes - the hack-ish way I've forced the update, or something else?
3) What knock-on effects will the Flash Player version renumbering have on the local webserver deployment method? And is it documented anywhere?
Thanks

Hi Maria,
The rest of the install log is below and it does install the plugin later and the log is clean of errors thereafter.
I created "12" because the previous install guide noted that the folder should be named for the major version and I assumed that guidance still held (though thinking about it you've abandoned that distinction with the recent re-numbering).
Thanks

• Serving tutorial videos in flash player

so encore has the 'export to flash" feature. it seems like it might be a good way to go for me becasue it prodcces a flash player with all my chapter markers in place.
i have a couple questions though
1. it is limited to 1280X720 - i would have to do custom flash development to overcome that?
2. how is the resulting videos that are called by the flashdvd.swf served? i mean if i have 1-2GB of video clips are they served one at a time when called by the player?
3. is there any way to get the flashdvd.swf to fallback on iOS and maintain all the funtionality ?

I have a few questions/observations:
1. it is limited to 1280X720 - i would have to do custom flash development to overcome that?
Way would you want to "overcome" those dimensions? are you aware of how video bitrate must increase exponentially to maintain same quality as smaller display size?
2. how is the resulting videos that are called by the flashdvd.swf served? i mean if i have 1-2GB of video clips are they served one at a time when called by the player?
Typical Web videos are progressively downloaded from a regular Web server. Of course you will need a Web hosting account. You might also want to look into pseudostreaming if you would like the viewer to be able to "seek" to any chapter without waiting for the entire video file to download.
http://flowplayer.org/plugins/streaming/pseudostreaming.html
1 to GB of tutorials... certainly can be done, but I'd recommend that you understand how video bitrate relates to viewer experience as well as the viewers Internet download speed. This bitrate will determine how large each video file will be.
3. is there any way to get the flashdvd.swf to fallback on iOS and maintain all the funtionality ?
Yes, you can use swfobject for Flash detection and then provide an alternate video format:
http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/
Or, you might just want to use the mp4 video format and skip the Flash altogether. There are a number good players available, that will play the mp4... no Flash needed, like:
http://www.longtailvideo.com/players
For your review:
Video bit rate
Video bitrate is the minimum amount of data that must continually flow into the video player in order for the player to display that particular video uninterrupted. If that supply of data is not high enough, the video player will stop…. Wait for more data to download, then resume. The video bitrate is set as a parameter when the video is encoded.
One of the principle of goal setting is to "Begin with the end in mind". In this case it'll be very hard to give good recommendations because the end is not defined. So I'll just make a few assumptions and you can correct me as needed.
First, I'll assume that since you are converting to Flash, you want to deliver this video over the Internet. If that's true, then we'll have to make some assumptions on the Internet connection download speeds of your potential viewers. Let's just say that most have at least a 1.5Mb connection or faster.
OK, that would mean that a video bitrate of half that should usually provide a video download that is not interupped by buffering (most of the time anyway). So assuming a video bitrate of 750kbps, what would the optimum display dimensions be?
Before we decide, here's a little info about bitrate. For highest quality playback, the video bitrate is tied directly to the display dimensions. That is, the larger the display, the more incoming data is required to properly display the video. Think of bitrate in terms of a can of paint. If you have 1 quart of paint, you might be able to do a very nice job on a 32 X 24 foot area. But if you try to stretch that same amount of paint out over a 64 X 48 foot area, the coverage will not be nearly as good and you get poor results.
In the same way, a video displayed at 640 X 480 pixels will require 4 times the bitrate as a video displayed at 320 X 240 pixels to produce the same quality. So for example a video with a bitrate of 100kbps, displayed at 160 X 120 will produce the same quality results as a video with a bitrate of 1600kbps if displayed at 640 X 480.
So to boil it all down, video bitrates of 750kbps, even up to 1000kbps can usually get delivered of the Internet on most high speed connections. Higher bit rates may work for really fast connections but will cause problems for viewers with slower connections. Video display size has a direct bearing on the final quality. In the 750 to 1000kbps range, display size should be kept around 450 or 500 width max (and whatever height the aspect ratio calls for). Yes it can be displayed larger, but the quality will suffer.
Sound like your audio settings are fine, especially for Internet delivery.
As for framerate, maintain the original raw video framerate for best results. So if the video was shot at 24fps, leave it.
As for video converters, do you have the Flash 8 Video Converter? It works just fine for video to be delivered over the Internet. Remember, you are taking a Cadillac version of video (h.264 HD) and stuffing it into a Chevy body to get it to work over the Internet.
Best wishes,
Adninjastrator
