Flash causes us all immense confusion, and Firefox is adding to the problem.
My Firefox Add-ons page lists (under Plugins -- isn't there a difference?) that I have:
Shockwave Flash 12.0.0.70 which is set to "Always Activate".
Adobe websites list:
Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.70
Adobe Shockwave Player 12.0.9.149
-- so what on earth is the Firefox-listed "Shockwave Flash"?
This simply adds to the utter confusion already surrounding Flash Player -- which I cannot find anywhere amongst my Programs -- but which I can find under "Uninstall or change a Program" where it is listed as "Adobe Flash Player 12 Plugin".
There is also the thorny issue of FlashPlayer vs. FlashPlayerDownloader......
I need a flash of inspiration to get me out of shock -- I'm not waving, I'm drowning! In the internals of the plugin it is still referenced as Shockwave Flash. That hasn't changed as it would break websites that check for a specific plugin name. You can see that on the about:plugins page and in the properties of the Flash plugins file.
You can open the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) and paste this JavaScript code in the command line to see how the Adobe Flash Player plugin identifies itself:
<pre><nowiki>console.log(navigator.plugins["Shockwave Flash"].name);
console.log(navigator.plugins["Shockwave Flash"].description);
</nowiki></pre>
*https://developer.mozilla.org/Tools/Web_Console
On disk you will also see Macromedia for folder names used by the plugin.

*64 bit Windows: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\

Shockwave and Flash Player installed works fine but it says damaged in the dependency tab.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. When I go to
downloaded programs in windows where your active x programs are.
The icons on the leftt of shockwave player are white. I right click
on the shockwave player and click on properties and in the
dependency tab has nothing in the file name. Over to the right size
bites says damaged. On the download programs itself where the
shockwave player is the status says installed and the bite size
says 4 KB it did not it did not say damage only in the dependency
tab. My shockwave programs and games work fine. On the dependency
it has this message,This page lists the 1 file (s) amd 0 java
packages upon which shockwave active x controls depends on. I tried
uninstalling and reinstalling about 5 times and the samething came
up. If it has to run on the main package java the samething is
there too. There too it is installed and the bites are okay the
only place it says damage is in the dependency tab. I unstalled
that and reinstalled it the same number of times and the samething
appeared. Flash player the same way. How do I fix this problem? In
dowloaded programs I also have another shockwave active x control
with the same version and 2 java of the same version. Also after I
uninstall shockwave player I go to manage add ons and delete the
one that is still there and in the downloaded programs it has
unknown with a bunch of letters. There is no way to delete that
when you right click it you only see properties.Try clearing the Cache in Firefox.

Adobe Flash Player and Shockwave crashing has disabled my computer
I have downloaded a second flash player and it is still the same. Firefox has been crashing daily for a few weeks. I noticed that your adblocker plus was updated 6/4. Since then I have almost no use of firefox, because the Adobe flash player 13.0.r0 and Shockwave crash notices are constantly popping up. Could that update have something to do with why the flash players are not working? Below are an example of the crash details.
Thanks for the help. I prefer your browser, but this has made it non-functioning.
In trying to fix it, a window came up that asked would I like to change it back to a previous working image, which was Windows XP. Although this computer is Windows 7, I clicked the box yes, and said I wanted it to work like Windows XP. I see in your Operating System below, that it reads Windows Xp, but this computer is actually Windows 7. I can't find that menu to change unclick and change it back, so that it is working as Windows 7.

If that doesn't work try Try to disable Protected Mode in Flash 11.3 and above by adding the line ProtectedMode=0 to the Flash "mms.cfg" file located in one of these locations: [46]
(Windows 32bit) C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
(Windows 64bit) C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
For example, on a Windows 7 64-bit system, open the C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash folder, copy the file "mms.cfg" to the desktop, open it in Notepad, add a new line <code>ProtectedMode=0 </code> and then close Notepad, saving your changes. Next, go back to the C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash folder, rename the original file to "mms.cfgBAK" (to save it as a backup) and then drag and drop in the modified "mms.cfg" file from the desktop. [47] [48] [49]
Note: To re-enable Flash Protected Mode, either restore a backup of the original mms.cfg file, if you saved one, or else re-edit the mms.cfg file to remove the <code>ProtectedMode=0 l</code> line you added. Updating Flash Player or installing a newer version does not automatically re-enable Protected Mode
Flash has been a pain since day 1 and Mozilla is currently working to replace Flash with Shumway. Unfortunately it's in the Nightly channel, doesn't come activated automatically and it isn't quite ready for normal usage. I just tested Nightly yesterday with Shumway and it wouldn't play. -
Flash Player dosn't work in IE 11 even shockwave flash object is activated
Hello,
Flash Player dosn't work in IE 11 even shockwave flash object is activated.
I've installed Adobe Flash Player Version 16.0.0.287 (today).
then
I checked on this page:
http://helpx.adobe.com/de/flash-player.html
says Flash Player not installed or not activated
Active X Version 16.0.0.287
Internet Explorer 11
Win 7 SP1 32 Bit
Please help me.
Thank you in advance
PaulFirst, confirm that ActiveX Filtering is configured to allow Flash content:
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/867968
Internet Explorer 11 introduces a number of changes both to how the browser identifies itself to remote web servers, and to how it processes JavaScript intended to target behaviors specific to Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, this means that content on some sites will be broken until the content provider changes their site to conform to the new development approach required by modern versions of IE.
You can try to work around these issues by using Compatibility View:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-11
If that is too inconvenient, using Google Chrome may be a preferable alternative. -
What's the Difference Between Flash Player and Shockwave?
Hi,
I was wondering what's the difference between Flash Player
and Shockwave? And how do you know which one isn't working? I
downloaded and installed Flash Player successfully but it did say
that the plug ins might be in another file and may not work
properly. There is one game that will work, but most everything
else doesn't. I don't get pictures (like adverts, ect.) in my
email. What is the problem?I have found this site helpful. Adobe has a "Test Adobe
Shockwave & Flash Players" site. Here is the address:

Shockwave/Flash Player crashes with every browser...Ugh.
I can't find a solution in this forum although a lot of people seem to be asking this question. Flash crashes constantly and it doesn't matter if I use Chrome, Firefox or IE. It's quite unbearable. I don't have multiple Flash players and if an add-on is causing this, I can't draw a link between it crashing and me disabling them. I've scanned for malware and gotten rid of anything found. No viruses that my virus protection reports. The problem just gets worse. It used to be occasionally, then multiple times a day, now its pretty much anytime I want to use Flash...which seems to be constantly. It freezes my computer then an error message comes up and says Shockwave player has crashed. I have updated shockwave and flash, so I have the most recent versions....any solutions?
Thanks in advance. If your machine had a recent malware infection, you might want to consider backing up your critical files and starting fresh. It takes time for antivirus and anti-malware packages to discover and push signatures for new viruses, and it's standard practice to deploy new malware to ensure that an attacker maintains their foothold on a compromised machine.
If it was my personal machine, I would back up any critical data files, wipe the machine and re-install everything from pristine sources. Not exactly convenient, but you can be reasonably sure that the system is running the software you expect (discounting the possibility of malware that compromises the system BIOS).
That said, there's not a lot of actionable information here. I'd recommend uninstalling Flash Player and re-installing fresh. You actually have three different Flash Players -- there's an ActiveX control for Internet Explorer, the NPAPI plug-in for Firefox and the PPAPI Flash Player for Chrome. The PPAPI Flash Player for Chrome is totally encapsulated -- it doesn't even share settings.
SO... malware aside, the next most likely culprit is graphics drivers. Each of the independent Flash Player installations attempts to use a hardware accelerated feature (like video playback), but the driver crashes. Typically updating the graphics drivers would resolve this, or you can experiment with disabling hardware acceleration. How do I disable or enable hardware acceleration? Windows: how do I update the device driver for my video/display adapter? -
Adobe Flash Player not working--Shockwave Flash Object not installing
Ok...let's try this again. Somehow my previous discussion that I had been working on with eidnolb got marked as "Answered" when it wasn't. If you are reading this and are also having problems with Adobe Flash Player, please START YOUR OWN THREAD! That allows someone to help you individually and will hopefully prevent MY question from being accidentally marked as "Answered" when it's not. THANK YOU!
Now to start the whole process over....
1. When I download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player, my computer says it's succesful. I'm able to verify through Add/Remove Programs that it IS on the computer. However, when I'm on a site that requires AFP--like Hulu or YouTube--I get a message that says I need to download the latest version.
2. When I was working with eidnolb before, we found that for some reason the Shockwave Flash Object wasn't on my computer, even though I uninstalled and installed AFP several times and also restarted my computer.
3. I use Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 3 and Internet Explorer 8. My computer also has AVG 9.0.830 for anti-virus protection and Spyware Blaster. The only firewall I use is the standard Microsoft firewall that came already installed.
4. I am the administrator on my computer. I have also made sure the following are disabled when I download AFP: anti-virus program, anti-spyware program, firewall, all add-ons in Explorer, and any messenger programs.
Thank you to whomever is available and willing to help me. I truly appreciate it!I had this problem too. I'm not an expert with this at all, but Adobe Support at:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html
and http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/000/6b3af6c9.html
said that if you try to use Flashplayer with Internet Explorer 8 (64 bit) it won't work and you'll just keep getting the message to "Install Flashplayer" over and over even if you can see in your files that you already have it installed. They told me to use the 32 bit version of IE 8, or another browser such as Mozilla Foxfire or Google Chrome (both of which are 32 bit). Now I can watch Hulu with any of these three browsers. I didn't have to turn of AVG at all; but I have AVG 2011 Free Version 10.0.1170 downloaded from http://www.download.com . Also, according to the first website shown above, you don't have the latest version of Flashplayer, which is recommended by Adobe. -
What are the distinctions between Adobe Flash Player & Shockwave Player & Shockwave Flash?
I find references to what seem to be three distinct things:
Adobe Flash Player
Shockwave Player
Shockwave Flash
Treatment of these things is interwoven and confusing:.
As an example, the Adobe Shockwave Player page at URL: http://www.adobe.com/products/shockwaveplayer/ provides a link to a page to test whether Shockwave Player is installed. That test, however, is the test to see whether Adobe Flash Player ins installed.
On my Mac running OS X 10.6.4 Firefox 8.0.1 has a Plug-In named Shockwave Flash 11.0.1.152.
Are these things indeed distinct? Is it likely that both (or all three) are needed on the same computer? The Adobe web site should clearly define the relationships at a high level of visibility.Basically, the Flash player is just that: you can watch videos, but you can't interact with them.
To give it its full name, Shockwave For Director is primarily used for things like games, or demos where the user can interact with the animation.
The current version of the Shockwave (For Director) player is 11.6.3.633 while the current Flash player is 11.1.102.55 -

Adobe flash player and adobe shockwave
both of them are not updating for me and im getting irritated about it
Hello again,
From the Shockwave FAQ page:
Flash and Shockwave Players are both free web Players from Macromedia. Together, they bring you the best rich media content on the Internet. Each has a distinct purpose. Flash Player delivers fast loading front-end web applications, high-impact web site user interaction, interactive online advertising, and short to medium form animation.
Shockwave Player displays destination web content such as interactive multimedia product demos and training, e-merchandising applications, and rich-media multi-user games. Through Xtras, Shockwave Player is also extendable to playback custom-built applications. -
Shockwave Player vs. Shockwave Flash (Flash Player)
For historic/legacy reasons there are two free Adobe browser add-ons with somewhat similar names
Shockwave Flash
Shockwave Player
Shockwave Flash is Flash Player
Shockwave Player is Shockwave Player
This is the Shockwave Player forum.
Please post problems regarding Shockwave Flash in the Flash Player forum
installation problems: http://forums.adobe.com/community/flashplayer/installing_flashplayer

Hmmm, your mention of eHelp indicates a bit of time has
elapsed. As a result, I'm going to crawl way out here on this shaky
little limb and say that maybe that was the case at one point in
time, but it probably changed. Or, maybe it was just voodoo all
along. I'm simply not sure. Maybe Catbandit has some good stuff
about all that, as he is another one that also combined RoboDemo
with RoboHelp.
However, I'm another person that now combines RoboHelp with
Captivate. (I never could warm up to RoboDemo, but Captivate rocked
my world) Anyway, I'm happy to report that I've been combining
Captivate movies with both .CHM and WebHelp output for a long time
with no issues. And with my laptop being pretty new, I'm doubtful
Shockwave player is even on the system. But I'll counter that with
the open admittance that I'm not sure how I would even go about
testing to see if it was present.
Hopefully others will happily chime in here and offer other
insights on this.
Cheers... Rick -
Flash Video NOT working of Facebook YouTube etc...
Adobe Flash Player 10.2 (Latest) is the problem..
installing and uninstalling Doesn't resolve the problem.
A Rollback to Earlier Version DOES work...Adobe Flash player, previously known as Shockwave Flash is required for YouTube videos. You can get earlier versions from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html

Adobe; various websites; and now seemingly Firefox seem to continually confuse and obscure things regarding the two different Adobe Players (Adobe Flash Player AFP and Adobe Shockwave Player ASP). According to this security alert web article ASP is far less secure than AFP which itself isn't great. The article http://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/05/why-you-should-ditch-adobe-shockwave/ indicates:
Mozilla Firefox users should note that the presence of the “Shockwave Flash” plugin listed in the Firefox Add-ons section denotes an installation of Adobe Flash Player plugin — not Adobe Shockwave Player.
==========
My Firefox is working, but this confusion of calling things by their proper (or at least a unique name) seems crazy to me. If this is accurate can someone get Firefox to name things correctly, AND if article is accurate let this be a warning to others that they NOT use ASP, but as needed rely on AFP. There are Adobe test pages for each so you want to make sure that AFP succeeds and the other ASP fails to play.hello, "Adobe Flash Player" and "Shockwave Flash" are the same thing - the latter is the technical term of the plugin that adobe kept for compatibility reasons after it acquired the technology from another company (macromedia)...
