Flash PROM Patch

Hello,
What is a good pratice to update the Flash PROM Patch (firmware) on a server ?
I have several SUN Fire V480's , and currently we don't update the firmware on a regular basis.
my question is should this be done on a regular basis or just when experiencing issues.
I am trying to get some experienced advice all you UNIX gurus.
Zak

Hello Zak,
OBP updates are fixing bugs or add support for new hardware.
Certain CPU/memory problems don't arise with later versions or the given log message is more to the point.
Review the patch notes on a regular basis, if one or more of the mentioned fixed problems have appeared on your systems, it's time to update.
Probably not what you expected ...

If that doesn't work, will need motherboard replacement

  • Adobe Flash player patch trouble 10.3.183.5 version

Have baselined the flash patch along with sun java, REader X and shockwave. All is fine for all the patches that I have baselined except for the flash one.
in Patch Mgmt it never shows as patched, even though manual check on the devices shows it has installed flash player - watching the ZPM package progress it seems to fail on action 3 or 4 of 4, but as I see it the flash install works, untill next time the failed ZPM package runs (because it failed) and the first action of a flash install is uninstall - which then on some devices (so far about 10 of 130) leaves the device "flash-less".
So Flash seems to be a problem child even outside ZPM/ZCM/Lumension so currently my fix is this:
    - Remove adobe flash from baseline and remidiation (disabe)
    - get the standalone active x installer.exe (we only run IE) (from fpadobe site)
    - get the adobe flash uninstaller.exe
    - create a run once package that does:
copy the 2 exe's to local folder
Promt to close IE and/or "taskkill /F /IM iexplore.exe" (if not installer will fail with error 1025) (succes codes 1,128 to handle normal return and return if process not there)
run the uninstaller with option "-uninstall" (silent)
run the installer with option "-install" (silent)
Also note that if the flash control panel is open during install you'll get an exit code 1040.
Run the 2 exe's as DAU user (if not it will fail on Windows 7, but is OK on XP)
Do a distribute Now/install immediatley/launch after install relationship to devices
(in rare cases you need to get a fp10 reg permission batch file that uses subinacl to clean badly affected devices, but this is very rare)
So I would prefer a ZPM package of flash that actually works - would this be forthcomming ?

  • Problems with flash update patch

We are running into a problem with the flash update and a few others.
Following best practices we have a group policy(Software Restriction
Policies) that prevents executables from running in the temp directory and a
few other typical spyware/Trojan start points such as %LocalAppData%. As an
example patch management extracts the flash update to
C:\Users\DAU*****\AppData\Local\Temp and then tries to run
Patch-Smart.AdobeFlashPlayerPlugin.exe which doesn't happen due to the group
policy. Is there any way I can redirect the patch extractions to a certain
path in ZCM and then I could exclude the path from the policy. I know I can
exclude the exe in group policy but I would have to do that for each patch
    that has a problem.
    Thanks,

I have an Ultra 1 Creator 200 MHz. It is claiming that it needs a PROM update to run in 64bit mode. The problem that I have is that when I run the prtconf -V comand it comes up with OBP 3.3.2 1996/06/28 08:43 Suposably I only need 3.11.1 When I tried to go though sunsolve patches to find an update all I found were Ultra1 (non-E) that were marked for the 140 and 170 models and the Ultra1E version...which do I use??? Thanks a ton for any help you can give me.

For future reference before installing major OS Updates and especially before installing a number of OS, Security or Apple application updates at one time, you should check the hard drive for any directory problems via Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc.
Before installing a major OS Update or a number of available updates, it is also a good idea to disconnect all external peripheral devices except for a keyboard and mouse and don't launch or run any applications during the installation.
As a first step, I suggest the following link for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.

  • Manual installation of Flash CS4 patch fails

Vista Home Premium SP1 (current on all updates)
    CS4 Design Premium
Am attempting to install Windows flash_player_update2_flash10 using the Admin account. Followed these instructions:
    1. Quilt Flash CS4 Professional (NOTE: actually closed all programs)
    2. Right click flash_player_update2_flash10.zip
    3. Select Extract All....
    4. Extract the contents of the file to:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS4\
    5. When asked to replace the existing Players folder, choose Yes
Shortly after giving administrative okay to the install and clicking "yes" to the "copy and replace these files" popup, I get a Windows popup with this message:
"Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to the file. Name: FlashPlayer.exe" OK"
No options on the popup except "OK" which stops the installation. I realize this is a Windows issue, but it's also a CS4 installation issue. (I find it extremely ironic that Windows detects the installation of a security update as a security issue.) Any suggestions?

You're going to get a lot more attention in the Flash forum than you
    will here.

  • OBP Flash-update V880

    Hi,
my V880 OBP is 4.10.14 and CPU speed is 900 mhz, i was puzzle how to select and confirm which patch to download and upgrade ?cos at the Sun System Handbook, there are 3 patches listed as below, i worried i upgrade with a wrong file and cause problem to server later.
Flash PROM Patch (at the front page of V880 System Handbook)
    119241 (4.18.2)
    119244 (4.18.11)
    121688 (4.22.x)
    tks & rdgs.

those are all versions that you can select. you can read up what fixes are associated with each and determine which one you might want. in most cases, you can apply the latest, however read the doc.

  • Sun Fire v440 - which OBP Patch to use?

    Hello,
    According to this page: http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_private/Systems/SunFireV440/SunFireV440.html
There are several Flash PROM Patches to choose from:
    118319 OBP 4.17.2
    119240 OBP 4.16.6
    119245 OBP 4.18.10
    121685 OBP 4.22.x
The page does not really say which one I should use. Also, when I go to each patch page, it says "RELEASED" ....obviously not "OBSOLETED".
    My OBP version is:
    $ /usr/sbin/prtconf -V
    OBP 4.17.2 2005/07/21 12:29
Do I want the highest numbered patch? Why are multiple OBP patches listed as "current" with no direction on which one to install?

  • OpenBoot Prom Update for Enterpeise 420R

    Hello all,
I would like to look into updating my Boot Prom to whatever version is now current for the Enterprise 420R system. Currently, my system reports the following in response to the .version command:
    Release 3.31 Version 0 created 2001/07/25 20:35
    OBP 3.31.0 2001/07/25 20:35
    POST 1.2.8 2000/08/22 19:50
I read in the "Sun Flash PROM Guide for Workstations and Workgroup ServersStandalone Version" document about this, but cannot find exactly how or where to obtain the program ( Standalone Flash PROM Utility ) or any of the updates for this purpose.
I am sure that I am lost or not searching correctly for this info. Could someone point me to this utility and the place to obtain these updates/patches?
Any assistance would be most appreciated....

Once again, the Sun System Handbook comes to the rescue.
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/E420R/E420R.html
The OBP patch is linked right up front on the system's resource page in the Handbook.
    ... whisper after me ...
"the SSH is your friend ..."
"the SSH is your friend ..."
"the SSH is your friend ..."

Patch 109082 is downloaded as a zipfile.
The README inside that zipfile tells you how to flash-update the firmware.
Your system is already at the latest version, by the way.

  • An error occurred opening file. Flash can not parse this document".

I working on a keyframe animation for a client.  It was working until the recent flash player patch. Now the file is corrupt and not working.  I have four back up files on two different hard drives, still no luck.  I can't afford to keep recreating files when it should be probably saving in the first place. Is there way to recover the files properly? This devastating I really need some help.  Thanks

Do the experiment, take a FLA file, change the extention to zip and open it, you'll see the content.
When a file is damaged, what happens, is missing information that makes up or this information was altered. In an image file, we can see the damage with incorrect color pixels.
A damaged word file has unknown characters and missing characters.
In both cases the files can be opened, the big problem is when the files are compressed, since a small lack of information is reflected in many small gaps.
The repair of compressed files, look for "holes", the lid infrmacion may or may not be correct, but allows them to be open.
Fla files are not encrypted, are compressed files with a certain structure and xml, with construction information.
In my experience, any FLA file will not open, open it worth trying this method

  • Patch management schedule

Just gone to do some testing with ZPM prior to rolling it out on our student Windows 7 PCs and realised there seems to be a gaping hole in the scheduling options for deployment
For example I want to install Flash \ Java patches as soon as the system starts or as soon as the user logs on to ensure they're done before a browser is opened, how comes I can do this with Bundle schedule options but not for Patches?

Just found an interesting workaround that might solve my problems...
After remembering that ZPM basically creates Bundles for each Remediation activity I went to the Bundles\ZPM folder and found the directive Bundle for the activity I'd set up (I named mine Flash 11.8). At that point I could see the standard Relationship \ Assignment Details options and changed the schedule to "At User Login"
Tried it and Flash updated perfectly as expected, are there any side-effects to modifying the schedule in this way? If not it'll do the trick nicely as I can patch Flash and Java either at machine boot or login so they're ready to use straight away then have the larger Windows patches go through at night.

  • Solaris 8 on an Ultra 2 needs OPB Upgrade.

While installing 8 on an Ultra 2 the installation tells me it is defaulting to the 32 bit install and that I need OPB 3.11.2 firmware as a minimum? Where in the wide, wide world of sports can I get the OPB firmware upgrade for an Ultra 2 workstation?
    TIA

    http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/retrieve.pl?doc=fpatches%2F104169&zone_32=firmware%20sun%20ultra%202
) As root, copy the "flash-update" files from the directory containing the
patch to the root directory as follows:
    # cp flash*latest /
    # chmod 755 /flash-update*
In order to boot the binary, it must be located within the root
partition. If it is not already located within the root partition
then move it to /. If the binary is already located elsewhere
within the root partition then note the exact filepath so that the
    binary can be booted later.
    b) As root, exit the OS such that the system returns to the PROM''s "ok"
    prompt:
    # halt
    ok
    c) Power off the system.
** CAUTION ** Do not attempt to access any part of the system hardware
with the system power still on!
    d) Remove the system top cover. (If you are unsure how to do this then
consult your system "Installation Guide" or "Service Manual".)
    e) Set J2003 to write enable at 2+3. Default is write protect at 1+2
Locate jumper J2003. NOTE that a plug-in card may be installed in
the system which covers J2003 - if this is the case then you will
have to remove the plug-in card in order to access J2003.
Jumper J2003 provides a write enable/disable mechanism for the
Flash PROM. J2003 normally connects pins 1+2, which causes the
Flash PROM to be write protected. To enable patch installation,
write enable the Flash PROM by MOVING the J2003 jumper from pins 1+2
    to pins 2+3.
**IMPORTANT NOTE**: If this jumper is NOT set to WRITE ENABLE, the
    Flash update will fail.
(If you have difficulty locating J2003 then consult Figure 1-2 in the
"Sun Flash PROM Guide for Workstations and Workgroup Servers -
    Standalone Version").
If a plug-in card was removed to access J2003 in the step above
    then reinstall the card now.
    f) Replace the system top cover.
    5) Running the Flash Update Utility
    a) Power on the system
Wait for the PROM''s banner to appear, and then
    b) use the Stop-A keys (or Break key, if running from a serial line) to
    abort the auto-boot sequence.
** NOTE ** If the flash update completes normally then the values
contained within the system''s Non-Volatile RAM (NVRAM) configuration
variables will be retained. However, if the update process is some-
how interrrupted then it is possible that any non-default values
contained in NVRAM will be lost. For this reason it is recommended
that you note down on paper the contents of any NVRAM configuration
variable which has been customized so that they may be manually
restored at a later time, if necessary. (Use the PROM''s "printenv"
command to list the variables and their values.)
    c) The system should now display the PROM monitor''s "ok" prompt.
Now boot the Flash update utility as given below:
CAUTION: Do not boot/run revisions lower than the latest unless you
are absolutely sure that that is what you want to do!
    ok boot disk /flash-update-Ultra2-latest
NOTE: If your system''s boot device is not "disk" then you will
have to specify the appropriate devalias (e.g. disk2).
If the binary is located in a location other than / then
provide the entire filepath after the boot device.
Answer the questions as prompted by the utility.

  • Ultra 1E & OBP 3.33: solaris cd not booting.

    Hi,
I got an Ultra 1E 167. It came loaded with Solaris 8 booting the 32bits kernel.I didn't know details about the way the previous owner installed and configured it.
I tried to boot the 64bit kernel and got the message: "needs OBP 3.11.1 at least to boot and run Solaris 8".
Well the OBP was at version 3.7.1
So I went to the patch portal, downloaded the PROM update 104288 for ultra 1E (not ultra 1), burned it on a cdrom, switched the jumper on the board to writable, booted and flashed the PROM successfully. The box rebooted with OBP 3.33.0.
(detail: the new banner shows now: "Sun Ultra 1UPA/SBUS (UltraSPARC???? 167 mhz") : the cpu version is gone).
From now trying to boot failed:
    Boot device: /sbus/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@0,0
krtld: load_exec: fail to expand cpu/$CPU
krtld: error during initial load/link phase
panic - boot: exitto64 returned from client program
I took an OpenBSD 3.4 sparc64 iso. It booted and installed, and the box runs it like a charm.
I took a NetBSD 1.6.1 sparc64 iso.It booted and installed, and runs just fine.
I took a Linux-sparc iso. It booted and installed and it turns the box into a nice desktop.
I took a Solaris 8 iso, then a Solaris 9, then the last Solaris 10 Express, setting OBP:
    set-default boot-file
    set-default boot-device
I use the CD#1, not the "Installer" one.
and I boot giving the kernel path: /platform/sun4u/kernel/sparcv9/unix
    then the modules path /platform/sun4u/kernel.
    Fails allways:
(trying to boot the 32bit sparcv8 solaris 8 kernel fails too).
"Alloc of 0x400000 bytes at 0x1000000 refused" (memory alignment issue ?) in case of solaris 9 or 10, and fail to expand cpu/$CPU in case of solaris 8.
It seems solaris doesn't support ultra 1e with the last PROM.I will not try to downgrade the OBP, as they warn on sunsolve to not do that at all.
So I keep running OpenBSD and Linux on the box.
But maybe I miss something about solaris ??

    Hello,
this is a problem that is not acknowledged by Sun !
Please review the following thread on the Sun Support Forum (posted Thu, 12 February 2004 03:47)
Either go to http://supportforum.sun.com and select the Forum (last is the topic)
    Hardware ? Ultra/SunBlade ? Upgraded OBP on Ultra 1 - now can't boot
    or use the link
    http://supportforum.sun.com/hardware/index.php?t=msg&th=1267&start=0&rid=23&S=a533bb4719fbfe75ac9083e444cf19d1
You have to downgrade the OBP. Unfortunately the previous patch is no longer available (from Sun) for download.
You can either take one of the 'SUN4U SYSTEM FLASH PROM UPDATE' cd's (e.g. 2.3) or download it from the alternate location given in the thread.
It's very interesting that the error does only appear when Solaris is involved. I will post this as an update to the original thread.

  • Solaris 10 install on Intel Centrino laptop

    Greetings all:
Can someone tell me if it's possible to install Solaris 10 to a Intel Pentium M 730 processor with i915PM/GM/GMS chipset? Sorry, assumed you needed an even amount of equal dimm's, but this is not the case.
C-14 Sun Blade 100 Service Manual October 2000:
The system has four DIMM slots on the motherboard. Because the memory data bus width is equal to the

    Hello all,
I am having issue in accessing OK prompt from LOM menu. When I do the poweron, it sits on LOM event: power on. When I do, console it shows stand by. Please help me out here as I am working on making this server to respond. Thanks.

Hi. Could you tell me if patches 108620-04 or higher & 108673-02 or higher are already installed on the Netra t1 105?
*How to determine if the Netra[TM]T1 model 105 server PROM patches are current [ID 1010561.1]*
    Description
How to determine if patches 108620-04 or higher & 108673-02 or higher are already installed on the Netra t1 105.
    Steps to Follow
These two patches have to do with OBP(OpenBoot PROM) and the user prom.
108620-04 Hardware/PROM: Netra t1 Standalone User PROM Update
    108673-02 Hardware/PROM: Netra t1 System PROM Update
    108673-02 delivers OBP 3.10.27.
This can be checked via the OBP with the .version command.
    OBP Example:
    ok .version
    Release 3.10.27 ME created 2000/06/22 16:45
    OBP 3.10.27 2000/06/22 16:45
    POST 1.17.0 2000/03/06 12:18
This can be checked via Solaris[TM] with: prtconf -V
    Solaris[TM] Example:
    # prtconf -V
    OBP 3.10.27 2000/06/22 16:45
If you see Release 3.10.27 you do not need to install this patch.
    108620-04 delivers the dropins
These can be checked at the ok prompt with the show-dropins command.
    Example:
    ok show-dropins

    ok
The part that is of interest is about two thirds of the way down to do
    with ebus-14.400000, probe+, banner- and tty-control.
If the Checksum matches you you don't need to install this patch.
On the other hand it won't cause any problems to reinstall both patches.
