Flash thinks that my isight is in use by another program -- when its not.
When a flash page calls my webcam for use (like Yahoo Live), I get the following error: "Camera is unavailable, may be in use by another application." I've checked, and nothing else is using the camera.
I went into the system and found out that the webcam is controlled by the following component.
System > Library > Quicktime > QuickTimeComponents.component
When I remove the component from the above location, Flash says that there is no webcam. When I put it back, I get the error message stated above.
Now, I didnt always have this problem... Yahoo Live used to work great, but then I installed Skype, and now it wont work... I then uninstalled Skype, removed it from my login items and everything, but still, Yahoo Live wont work. I then tried the something on my Macbook, and the same thing.
Does anyone know whats going on here?
Both my iMac and Macbook running Leopard have this same issue.
Im thinking that the above quicktime component is messed up and needs to be replaced with the original one.. What do you all think?
Thanks,
Brandon
Hello Brandon
You can use the suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight to help find the source of your problem and perhaps eliminate iSight as a contributor.
Unless your problem is with iSight itself, your troubleshooting may lead you to the root cause.
Try some other Flash-based video website to determine whether your problem is only with Yahoo or some system component.
Have you tried to configure your "Flash" settings as described here?
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4761707
If you cannot even get to the Flash settings window, you may have damaged software. Try the following:
• Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
• Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
• Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.
• Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
Try a different browser (Firefox, Camino, etc.) to see if your problem might be in Safari.
Have you tried reinstalling QuickTime? Repair permissions before installing QT and again after the restart that finishes the QT update.
If you still believe that the problem is QuickTime related, you might get better help by searching or posting in QuickTime Discussions.
Beyond that, I would suggest that you reinstall all of your Mac's software and see if everything works before you add any third-party apps or peripherals.
Please let us know what you find.
Cheers,
EZ Jim

Ichat says camera is being used by another application when its not!
Evry time i go to hook up my cam, (sony handycam), the stupid computer tells me that my camera is being used already by another application...even when every app is closed and off.. it still says this
Hi,
This message can also show up when iChat is having trouble recognizing the video format coming from the camera. I'm not sure if it will help, but you may want to try installing the iChatUSBCam demo to see if it help iChat to recognize the camera.

the Apple store is an hour away and i dont want to drive, i want to fix this myselfAre you opening all the programs at the same time. The camera will fight between applications for its use and may get stuck. It's better to open and then close each. When all else fails trash the preference file for the application or applications. There are specific directions for this on the apple site.(or someone may likely follow my post on an easy how to) I can't go through at the moment but keep in mind preference file or .plist as they are shown are all located in one specific area of your mac. By trashing them is like resetting the program to it default setting without your changes to color background, font choice etc. Minor stuff really. The plist file is rebuilt automatically on relaunch of that application. Trashing a plist is a common fix recommendation and about the extent of ever having to go near the system area.

Built-in iSight problems-"camera in use by another application" but its NOT
I am having an issue with my iMac G5 2.1GHz with iSight built in.
I tried to iChat AV tonight after months of not using it. When I opened my own video window it says "Your camera is in use by another application."
There are no other applications open in the dock other than Finder.
Same results with Photobooth. The message reads -- Photo Booth cannot open because the camera is in use by another applicaton. Close the application using the camera, then try opening Photo Booth again. < OK >
I searched this forum and tried the following:
• zap PRAM
• reset SMU
• reset NVRAM
I looked for iSight prefs, but couldn't find anything. Deleting prefs is the only thing I have not tried, but I do not know what to delete.
Also, the camera shows up under USB under system profiler. The IR remote also shows up on the same bus, and the remote works just fine.
The green light next to the iSight is never on.
I switched to another user and experience the same problems, so it does not seem to be user settings.
Any help to get my computer to recognize my iSight would be appreciated! Thanks for the note. I saw that Apple KB article #93216 that basically tells you not to have any other applications running that use the camera, which I do not. Also, I have Classic installed, but it is not running as I hardly ever use it.
Since my original post last night I have tried several more things, with absolutely zero success.
One unique thing that I thought would work (and it sort of did) was to add Photobooth to my Startup Items under the Accounts tab of System Preferences. Unlike iChat AV, Photobooth will not even open if the built-in iSight is not available. So, I thought, let's see if Photobooth will open at Startup and perhaps take over the camera before whatever is taking it over has a chance to do that.
Sure enough, this trick worked, although the video screen was blank. On a second time the video screen showed erratic thick lines like it was starting to pass the video data through and then was stopped. Again, my iSight is recognized by Apple System Profiler, so the computer knows it is there and is getting power, etc. As soon as I quit Photobooth and tried to reopen it, I received the message again that the camera was in use by another application.
My next steps, when I am able, are to try to boot off an external firewire hard drive that should have an older saved backup of my system, from when the camera was working. I will also download the combo updater as you suggest, MGW, and apply that as I understand that to be a sort of remedy for any number of problems.
To me it appears to be a software issue. I would imagine with the OS and not related to any application in particular. (iPhoto cannot access the iSight, can it? For some reason my iPhoto opens automatically on my G5 iMac every time I boot it up, and I cannot figure out why. I will look into this issue and see if it is related.) -
Updated iTunes to 11.0.3 and now when I try to use Airport Express I get a message in iTunes that states, "an unknown error has occured (-15000.) I gave the Airport a hard re-start, so I don't think that is the issue. Using Windows 7 Ultimate
Looks like I fixed it., thanks to another post I read. I went into my Norton Security. Under Settings. Chose Firewall. Program rules. changed the itunes setting from "auto" to "allow" This also fixed my error (-3212) which would not allow me to connect to the iTunes store.

I am unable to use my external CD player. I have a fairly new mac mini 10.8. I am told that the player is being used by another application, but it's not true. I've forced everything to quit and restarted. I've even unplugged the unit and let it rest. I've turned off and unplugged the mac too. I cannot make a CD. Why?
I misread your message. I thought it said I did not have burn support with the Samsung hardware.
When the CD goes in it says You inserted a bland CD. choose an action from the popup menu or click ignore
open finder
open itunes
open disk utility
make this action the default
eject ignore ok
However, when I am making CDs. I am in itunes. That is where my recordings areI haven't tried to do it from this vantage point.
I don't know how to make a screen shot on a mac.
I go to my playlist and click on the little gear icon at the bottom left and I leave things as they are - preferred speed - maximum. I leave it on audio CD - and then I select BURN.
When I tried this the other day, I could not get it to burn, no matter how hard I tried - everything I could think of, using a different CD, force quitting everything I was not using, restarting the computer, unplugging the CD hardware and plugging it back in after a little while, nothing worked. I got that message that said my player was being used by another application every time I tried to make the CD. This took over an hour. I don't know of another way to make a CD on the mac; I was not using another program or application. Now it seems to be working fine. I am burning another copy of something I gave away.
I wish I knew what caused this. It was a real problem Saturday morning. -
I am having a problem with the new iTunes store. I can connect my ipod, and it will show that it is syncing. Once the sync is complete on iTunes, my ipod still shows that it is connected, do not eject. I have not had a problem with this until the new verision of iTunes. When I go to eject my ipod, it tells me that it can't eject due to application being used in another program. I did receive an ipad 2 for Christmas, that I also sync with iTunes, but only the ipad shows up in my devices on the site, what happened to my ipod device and how to add it back to devices? Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

Dear Adobe.
Yesterday I installed the latest version of Flash Player that auto appeared on my screen. Ever since I can not play video, and my system has become painfully slow. I have Mac OS Lion 10.7.5 and software is up to date. Before this everything was running beautifully. Can you please provide a link so I can uninstall the latest version only. Thank you. Stephen Kress. Melbourne. AustraliaWhen you run the uninstaller, it will uninstall all Flash Player versions.

how to organise(and save) Lightroom catalogue, in such a way that the catalogue can be used on another computer? / so you can see what has been edited etc. /
Yes, but external disks will always be slower than internal drives.
Look into file synchronization software. As long as folder structure is identical inside the two master folders, and drive letters the same, you can keep the two machines fully synchronized very easily, going both ways. The one I use cost about $50 or so.
Use a large capacity 2,5" portable (goes in your pocket) for transport. You need the entire master folder there, but once set up only new or modified files are copied.
The Lightroom catalog can be synchronized with the rest, so that you are working with the same catalog on both machines. This overwrites the catalog with a new copy every time, so a regular backup schedule in addition is a must. OTOH you will have three copies of every file, one always off-site. That's sound backup practice.
Tip: exclude the Lr Previews folder from the synchronization. They are written to disk in such a way that they take an insanely long time to copy. New previews will be built on the receiving machine. -

Isight camera- Camera is being used by another program
I use my MBP with an external keybpard, & mouse, and monitor so I run it witht he lid closed. Everytime I go to click on the ichat icon- I get a message saying camera is being use by another program.
I am also trying to use an external camera. THis message happens with out without the external camera being connected.
Any thoughts on this?Try this... shut down ur machine, then hold the power
button for almost 10seconds or until u hear a beep,
then once ur machine is fully booted up the camera
should start working again. Good luck!
I don't have any issues, but I'm interested... What does this actually do? And what is it typically referred to as?
Is it similar to resetting the PRAM? -
Camera Used By Another Program
Hello, I just upgraded to Tiger, and I started to use Ichat AV 3.0.1 and I get the message Camera used by another program. I have tried Repairing the permission, restarting, and may other things. Does anyone know how to get this working? or if Apple will fix this problem?
Also, Do you guys think a fresh install would fix my problem?
Thanks.Hello Vincent,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Does anyone know how to get this working?Apple's own iChat, iChat AV frequently asked questions (FAQ) contain a link to this article titled iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message. Have you tried the suggestions there?
or if Apple will fix this problem?I think it unlikely that it is Apple's problem. If the above does not help, try all applicable suggestion in Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.
Do you guys think a fresh install would fix my problem?
Possibly -- if you mean a fresh install of QuickTime and / or the 10.4.2 Combo Updater.
I will be surprised if a fresh install of Tiger would be required. Do not do a complete Tiger reinstall unless you have first tried all the other suggestions above.
