  • I keep having to turn my wireless connection off and on

This has been happening for the past month or two, and only on my home wireless network. There's no set length of time, sometimes it's if I'm downloading a lot at once, sometimes I open a single website, and my wireless connection freezes up on my MacBook Pro. It's "solved" by turning my wireless connection off on my MBP, then turning it back on. No other devices at my home connected to my Linksys router have this problem; iPad, iPhone 3GS, Xbox 360.
I've tried removing the network from my computer, and reconnecting it. I've reset the router a number of times, too, and no luck. Any suggestions?

There are several threads on WiFi issues. It appears there are a multitude of things that can cause wifi problems. I have been following several threads on this site on the issue. I personally have not had this problem but I became fascinated by this topic.
The other poster suggested you check out the channel broadcast of your router and others your computer can see. Someone could have changed their channel to sit at the same frequency as your router, but this would not appear as a change to you. There is software available to scan your environment. AirRadar is one I have used.
    Another thing to try:
Remove plists to reset the wireless system
Go to Macintosh HD -> Library -> Preferences -> SystemConfiguration ->
    Delete the following Plists:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.apple.nat.plist
    come.apple.network.identification.plist
    com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    Networkinterfaces.plist
    This has worked for some.
In some instances people have resorted to pinging their own router to keep the "alive".
This workaround that works for some:
As soon as you connect to your wireless network, Open Terminal and start a ping going. They use their router IP address; but any local address will do: for example with an Airport basestation at IP addres 10.10.10.1
    ping 10.10.10.1 <return>
You'll see a string that looks like:
    64 bytes from 10.10.10.1: icmp_seq=728 ttl=64 time=1.527 ms
    64 bytes from 10.10.10.1: icmp_seq=729 ttl=64 time=1.513 ms
    64 bytes from 10.10.10.1: icmp_seq=730 ttl=64 time=1.203 ms
    64 bytes from 10.10.10.1: icmp_seq=731 ttl=64 time=1.684 ms
    64 bytes from 10.10.10.1: icmp_seq=732 ttl=64 time=1.063 ms
you basically keep this running in Terminal all the time.
From personal experience I have had routers die. So I have two Linksys and one Dlink carcass in my office. Now onto an Airport Base station. Some posters have found success with software upgrades to the routers.
External WiFi adapters that plug into the USB ports to get around any issues with the built in Airport card or router signal strength. My daughter at college got one called the Bear Extender, greatly increased signal strength for her.
Many vehement discussions why this suddenly changes. No conclusions.

  • Turning the wireless on/off on a HH3. Connecting o...

I have been having problems with the broadband dropping out. BT technical say its acceptable that it drops out a couple of times a day, so i decided to try and connect up an ethernet to get better connection speeds. I'd also like to turn the wireless connection off for safety reasons (perhaps a bit paranoid?)
I've now got CAT6 cable to two other PCs in my home. These are connected to the patch plate by the router ready for connection with patch leads.
I'd be grateful for some help as how to a) turn of the wireless and b) talk me through how to activate the ethernet to my other PC's.
One last question, if i turn off the wireless, can i turn it on at will so as visitors can log on to their laptops?
    Many thanks.

  • Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."
For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb.
In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.
Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on optimal base station placement.

  • T60 -- Bad Wireless connection. Help please!

Hi Guys, my T60 has unstable wireless connection problem. I make sure the radio is "ON". It gets connected to the DSL network but it gets disconnected on and off ( the radio turns off by itself sometimes). Something wrong with my Intel PRO Wireless driver 3945abg? Can anyone guide me how to fix the problem??
    Thank you!!
    -meLittlebee

    Hi there,
I'm having the exact same problem - installed the OS (Windows XP Pro) adding SP3 and updating all drivers.
Then I connect to the wireless whitout any problems. I go to sleep, and next day wireless don't work!
The Machine is a T60 2008-WGV. I have made a image of the clean disk with Clonezilla, and therefore I can restore the OS quickly to a working wireless, but I find it quite anoing to have a clean OS every morning, in order to use network.
    anyone please?

  • Wireless connection PLEASE HELP

hello i am trying to use my wireless on my mac book it says it has got a signal and is working fine, but is not letting me use the internet and log onto msn etc anyone know how to set up my mac!!???

When I first got my macbook, I had similar issues. Here are a couple of things you can do that might help you out.
    1. Try turning off all the security features on your wireless router (temporarily)
    2. Try to connect, if this works, then continue on
    3. Turn on the security features that you want (WPA, WEP, etc) and make note of what you used. You may want to reset the router password as well.
    4. Configure the AirPort to use the settings from step 3.
Hopefully all will be well. It took me a couple of tries with my 2WIRE router/modem. If you are using WEP, you might want to make sure that you choose WEP hexidecimal. That solved the issue for me.
    Good luck...

  • Lenovo G560 Not able to turn on wireless connection

I have had my G560 since early 2010, and the wifi has alwaya worked untill now. Suddenly when I got home, it was switched off for whatever reason and I dont know how to fix it.
Before you simply say "press Fn+F5" I have this to say - That is NOT the problem. When I do press that it says "please switch on the wireless device" which I don't know how to do. I troubleshooted and it said that "windows wireless capability is turned off". Now for whatever reason it seems impossible to turn it back on as I have no idea how.
Disenabling and enabling the driver doesn't work, neither does Fn F5.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • I am using BT Broadband home hub and want to use my time machine - Can I turn the wireless router off in TM?

    Hi,
I have BT home hub which is now my main router in the house.  I also have Apple TV which works off the router and a network adapter around the house which is perfect for all my needs.  However, I also have a time machine but haven't used it for a while now as it's internal router overrides my current network which causes problems.
Being that i'm not very 'technical' I was hoping someone could give me a  'guide for dummies' instruction on how to turn off the wireless signal inside my time capsule without messing up the BT router?
    Many thanks in advance
    Alex

    Thanks guys,
Sorry, just to clarify, I need to connect the ethernet cable to my home hub and my TC first before i can do this?
And once i've done this will my stuff be backed up via the cable or wireless?
I know these are probably very stupid questions but like I said, i'm a div when it comes to this stuff!

  • Wireless connections need help on what type to get.....

I have an iMac G5 and need to make it wireless. Due to construction. I believe its a 17 inch 1.8gh( I think). What would I need to make it wireless? Also my iMac is going to be a good 100-150 feet away and up a story from the dsl box. Plus the Floor itself is about 6 inches thick or more in spots. I don't think the airporter express will cover this range. And no there is no way of moving the box closer and I don't want a bunch of wires running all over the 2 story house. Any ideas of what product would be helpful in this case?
    Thanks!

    Have you tried it?
You will probably get more wireless info from the knowledgeable users in one of the AirPort Forums where the wireless users hang out.

  • Suddenly lost wireless connection, bluetooth Help!

Yesterday my iMac stopped connection to my wireless internet. Nothing has been changed and the other laptops are still connected wirelessly. Now today I've even lost my bluetooth connection and now it won't even recognize when I hook it up via ethernet cable. What is going on? I was going to try to reinstall my basic software that came with my mac, but I can't even type in my password because my wireless keyboard isn't working because of the lack of bluetooth and I don't have a keyboard that will hook up to the back. Gosh I'm just about in tears.
    TIA

So I take my iMac to the Apple store. Genuis looks at it and does an archive restore? Anyway...got my bluetooth back and it hooked up to the stores wireless fine and dandy. I'm blissfully happy...until I get home. Bluetooth works great again, but it still won't connect to my wireless network at home. I opened the network up (we live in the middle of nowhere) so there would be nothing hindering it and nothing, nada, zilch.

  • Connection slow/stopping - having to turn Airport connection off and on

Over the past day or two I've had a problem with my internet connection. I was finding it was fine at first but then would slow down and/or stop (even though the bars on my Wifi connection were full) and only turning my Airport connection off and back on would fix it, but only temporarily.
I tried all kinds of solutions, mostly to do with reconfiguring my Time Capsule with different channels, different security settings, different DNS servers, etc.
None worked, and then I was reading a discussion about aluminium iMacs and how they only receive a connection through certain parts of their cases. It occured to me that I had cleaned my desk a couple of days ago and moved my computer further back on the desk. I've pulled it back again and this seems to have fixed the problem.
My room is quite far from the base station so it's clearly quite sensitive with regard to positioning.
Hope that helps anyone having a similar problem.

    Hi
I also get this problem. I have just bought an Intel-based 21'' Mac desktop and the internet worked fine for the first 2 weeks but ever since has been on and off for 20 minutes or less at a time.
Suddenly, the computer either loses the wi-fi signal or simply does not process it. Even if I go to Airport and attempt to connect to my network, the connection just times out. I believe that it may just be a simple connection problem but I don't believe this is satisfactory given that my girlfriend spent more than £1,000 on the machine and I never have any problems with the internet on my £300 Dell laptop, even when in exactly the same location.
Does anyone have any solutions? We have tried tech support but they have been hopeless!
    Thanks
    Chris

  • C4580 All-In-One suddenly lost wireless connection and I can't get it back.

I have a replacement C4580 after HP replaced the old one because of their dmaned regionalisation of printers.
It has been working fine through my wireless router, and I have been able to use it wirelessly on 2 different laptops, one running  XP and the other running Win 7. both have the printer showing as USB and wirless, normally being used wirelessly. THhe USB is there 'just in case' like now apparently.
It seems that my wireless printer has disappeared from my Printers and Faxes in the XP machine, so I try to add it again. Can't detect any printers, so when it asks to be connected via USB it appears to be going through the setup, then I get Error #201 VSA.
Googled for an answer but haven't found anything useful. Seen a couple which suggest that the router is hiding the SSID (it's not) or that MAC filtering is being used. Again, it's not.
I went to the Win7 machine, and it shows the wireless and USB printers (2 versions of the same thing) but when I attempt to print a test page tot the wireless version, it says that it has been sent, and I can see it in the printer queue, but after a while I get Error-Printing which in typical HP software is as usual bloody useless as it doesn't tell you why it failed, or where to even start looking to correct whatever error there was.
I have altered nothing on any of the computers (knowingly, anyway) and both laptops communicate quite happily with the outside world through the wirless router.
I really am getting rather pi**ed off with HP and their latest software. I had a PSC 1210 prior to this and no problems with it at all. The hardware seems fine but the latest software leaves a lot to be desired.
Any ideas anyone, on what has happened here, and how it can be fixed - or do I just cut my losses and buy another printer, this time anything but HP - unless they're all doing the same sort of stuff.
I have tried turning the wireless function off and then on on the printer, but also no difference.
Additional info. As suggested in another post somewhere, I have done both a Network Configuration and a Wireless Network Test printout. The test report shows PASS against both Wireless On and Wireless Working, and FAIL against Network Name (SSID) Found, but then shows the Network Name (SSID) correctly under Configuration Summary!
The configuration page shows Netwok Status as offline, and under 802.11 Wireless it gives a MAc address then Status as Disabled.
I don't really know what it is trying to tell me?
Oh, accidentally I printed 2 Configuration pages. On one it says that the 802.11 Status is Disabled and on the other it says that it is Disconnected. Unfortunately, I don't know which one was done first. The Disconnected one may have been done when I turned the wireless off. Nope, I just did again with Wireless turned on (at least the light is showing) and it still showing as Disconnected.

    Hi there KR,
Sorry to hear the reset is not working for you on your PS C4580. The steps for the reset are all correct and should have worked if the printer is in good functioning order.
I would suggest calling in to HP directly to see what your options are with them.

  • Wireless Connectivity Issues

Hello, I am having internet wifi connection issues with my laptop computer. In the bottom right corner of my taskbar, it says "Network Internet Access"However, I am not getting connection through any of my browsers.I am able to get wifi connection through my Nintento Wii U, but not my laptop. When I turn wifi button on keyboard off and then back on quickly, I only get connection for a single second; then no connection at all. I have tried the following:1.) Tried to connect to friend's wifi, but could not connect to the network 2.) Ran troubleshooting for wifi and it said two errors: broken access point and plug or wireless not plugged in properly 3.) Ran  Wireless Network Troubleshooting for when I tried to connect to my wireless router and results are: couldn't identify the problem..(network connected internet access, but no connection to any browser) 4.) Checking the status of wireless driver and results are this device is working properly 5.) Uninstalling and reinstalling Intel Wireless driver through device manager 6.) Unchecking box that says turn this wireless driver off to save power 7.) Checked Windows Firewall to see what boxes are checked and unchecked...not sure what to look for 8.) Disabled and Inabled wireless network driver I noticed that there is a slight rattling noise coming from inside my laptop not sure what came lose or what has become broken from the inside; I never droped it, but I did hit it slightly once or twice against wall while the laptop was in laptop case strapped to my right shoulder... Is it possible that I may have a broken wireless card that is inside my laptop?I ask this because this is very much my concern.

Welcome to the forums.  You're talking to other customers here.
What model DSL Modem / Router do you have?  Have you tried loging into it to adjust the WiFi Settings?  Do you devices see your WiFi network?
