Flash unmounting on halt

When there's a Flash-drive mounted to system with data that is still in cache (after data was moved from HDD to Flash), is it 100% safe to "# halt" Arch system? I always unmount Flash before shutting Arch down so it won't turn off before all the data transfered from cache to Flash-drive. Is there any possibility that Arch won't move all the cached data to Flash in time before shutting PC down? Or it waits strictly untill the cache is empty?

Arch won't shutdown until the filesystems are properly unmounted, so your data should be safe.

  • Flashing unmounted partitions on Time Machine drive

Using Lion 10.7.2 and an external 1TB WD My Book (firewire port).
This drive has 5 partitions, 4 of them Super Duper BUs which are not mounted,
and the rest of the drive is for Time Machine (500GB) and it is mounted.
When TM is doing its backup I sometimes see the unmounted volumes flashing
in the Finder under the DEVICES heading.
    Why is this?
Curiously if I mount them and then unmount them during the backup they
no longer show up in the finder.
    Why is this?

    Amy,
Find out why that annoying light is flashing.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the amber dot for details and suggested actions
If everything seems to be OK otherwise, it might be a notice that an update is available for the Time Capsule.

  • Adobe actively killing off Freehand with Flash CS5

    Hi,
We have just upgraded to Flash CS5, wanted CS4 and were told there is now CS5 and it will be that.
We come to open our Freehand maps from our vast database of such and CS5 wont open them. Flash 8 would.
CS5 we are told has dropped support for Freehand. This brings the new map work of a Government body in Flash to a halt.
Freehand is the tool for maps, superior to Illustrator. I have tried out Illustrator and hate it, other Cartographers also stick with Freehand. Its about time Adobe stopped shunning that side of the graphics industry. We have a job to do.
If Adobe host Freehand they should ensure two vector apps work together. No reason why suddenly Flash will not work with the vector file, somebody has simply tweaked it to deny Freehand users the ability to use Flash anymore.
As I type I now learn that Adobe have dropped selling Freehand,  long rude word !!!!!!!!!!!!
How dare they deny cartographers a better tool. We have tried to convert maps in the past, the clipping paths are one aspect that fall over. Line caps another. There is no time to both do a job and mess around battling with Illustrator, no money to employ a second person to be tasked with this. Gov't helped the banks out and now find the money by cutting down on us !
Does anyone know how to work with Freehand and Flash, CS3 I gather will open fh9 files (I still use FH9 as I prefer its interface 3 doesnt look like an 8 etc, data entry windows a decent size. )
    Will CS4 open fh9, ...will it open .fh11 ?
    Envirographics

Sad to hear that. I just began working with CS4 and found that copy paste from FreeHand to Flash CS4 works fine. Hope I never need to badgrade to CS5.
You may be interested to hear that there is a community actively fighting for FreeHand, in case you do not know about it, and tell your friends:

  • Is there any way to mimic a Fatal Error in Actionscript?

One thing I've noticed about Flash is that there doesn't
appear to be any way to throw a fatal error in Actionscript. If I
want my flash application to halt completely in a given situation,
there's not really anything I can do to stop all code execution is
there? Also, is there any sort of modal dialog (like an Alert()
message in Javascript) in Flash? At the very least, it would be
nice to stop everything and send the user a message they can't
    ignore when my code fails.
This is made more difficult by the fact that I'm trying to
write some Actionscript class files -- they don't have any library
items associated with them that I can depend on for user interface
    elements.
Any suggestions about how to STOP ALL CODE EXECUTION and send
a MODAL DIALOG MESSAGE to the user would be *much*
    appreciated.

    Hi greenbush,
I'm afraid there isn't. It's a file that you uploaded from your desktop, the original should remain there.
I wish that I had better news for you.

  • Stalled Streaming transfers & iChat disconnects

I have been having a problem for about the last two-three months with my wireless network. It started more intermittent at first, figured it was just some random network ghost, maybe on my ISP's end, but it's grown in frequency and now I seem to have traced its origins to my Time Capsule.
The problems first manifested in iChat. I get random disconnects. I can reconnect fine, but since iChat tends to lag a certain time from when the network goes down to when it actually shows a disconnect message… hard to track the whens.
THEN, I noticed that streaming flash content would halt in the middle. Youtube for example, or other flash video stuffs (jon stewart clips, etc). Just stop. if I reloaded the page it would finish, but it doesn't play nicely all the way through. Same with Apple Movie trailers via their website.
However, 'regular' downloads, such as Apple updates or iTunes downloads, will finish fine even if they're close to a gig in size, it seems to only affect 'streaming' content via Safari & iChat as well. I looked at the logs in Airport Admin and see a reference to UDP being terminated, not sure if it's related or how, not a techie.
    Troubleshooting I did:
I first started by turning wireless off. I plugged in via ethernet to the modem itself. This solved all connection issues, so I knew it wasn't my ISP or my modem playing funky and dropping the connection. I moved downstream and plugged into the Time Capsule via ethernet, with wireless still off. My connection still behaved the same way. So it's not the wireless portion only, it's something in how the Time Capsule is getting and passing my internet connection; simply, it's not doing it right anymore.
Any suggestions? I can't really pinpoint exactly when it started or what might have been the catalyst, the ONLY thing I can think of was, wasn't there a random Bonjour update around that time? Not sure if THAT might have something to do with it. Either way, I don't know what I can do, it's rather frustrating. Hoping someone can help point me in the right direction.

I have the same problem - when I first bought my TC everything worked fine and it was fast. But now if I'm watching anything that streams, like YouTube videos, the TC drops the connection, green light starts flashing amber, then it will start up again after a few moments.
This problem will happen 4 or 5 times to try and get through a 3 minute YouTube video.
I have yet to find a fix, but this is the first product of Apple's that I've been so frustrated with.

  • Z68A GD-65 Bios Not Updating

    Hi,
I downloaded the latest BIOS update here from the forums (7681vP8) and have my USB prepared using method 1. When it runs the flash it says halting for about 5 seconds and says the bios is being flashed. Then there is a short animation and it says that it's complete and asks to restart. But when I restart the BIOS hasn't changed. According to MSI Control Center I still have V23.2 and when booting up it's still the same version.
I tried looking for solutions and there was something about making sure Boot Sector Protection" is Disabled... but I can't find that option anywhere in the BIOS.
Now i'm stuck and don't know what to do. I did find another thread with the same problem but Svet solved the problem via PM!
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Ah that worked. I don't think I was clearing the CMOS correctly. I flashed it again using that BIOS update, then removed the battery etc... and it's now updated.
Thanks for all the help and thanks to PirateDog for the help in the other thread!

  • Ntfs external hard drives and fat32 4gb flash drive not able to unmount

    Hi everyone,
I have a bit of a headache here. I have two external hard drives, one is 1TB and the other is 500GB, both are NTFS format. I am using them on my macbook pro at this point because my windows 7 desktop appears to have crashed (still looking into the problem, just haven't had the time). I also have a 4GB flash drive that is fat32 format from that same windows desktop but I only use it for loading music on and putting it in the usb port of my stereo in my car. My problem at this point is that I am no longer able to unmount any of these by using disk utility. I was also having problems with both my external drives being read only until I came across Paragon ntfs for mac. That still messes up every now and then somehow and my drives go back to read only until I disable it and reboot, re-enable it and reboot again. Is there something that I am missing? I have been scouring the internet for last day or so trying anything and everthing to be able to get my ability to unmount disks back and nothing seems to work... Can anyone help?

    Hi,
Following is the System Requirements from Western digital’s website.

Yes, generally speaking, if an external drive or flash drive can be recognized by Windows XP, it should work in Windows Server 2003. However, there is no guarantee.
If possible, I recommend that you plug the “unrecognized” drive to some other Windows Server 2003 computers to test whether it works. If the issue continues, I suggest that you contact the vendor or the drive for more details.
By the way, what’s the version of Windows Server 2003 you used? Please update it to the latest service pack to check whether they works.
    Best Regards,

  • Problem unmounting filesystems when rebooting/halting after upgrade

I just installed mkinitcpio 0.6.8-2 and util-linux 2.19-3 from testing repo and when i reboot/halt my system either with my custom kernel26-ck or kernel26 from core i get an error when unmounting filesystems saying:
    "/dev/sda3 busy remounting read-only"
/dev/sda3 is my /home. After several reboots i noticed that 2 weird files(strange unreadable names) appeared in my home, so afraiding that something is wrong with the filesystem i rolled back the packages (mkinitcpio, util-linux-ng and my old kernel26-ck). Now everything is fine again with both kernels,
I'm writing my experience here because i do not know which of mkinitcpio and util-linux may be responsible for that problem. If anyone has an idea it would be nice to inform me so that i open a bug report.

I opened a bug report but it was closed because of being duplicate to that:
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/23014?s … name=&type
so it seems that the developers team is already informed about the problem.

  • Unmounting USB flash drive from cRIO

    Hi all,
I am using the USB port of a cRIO 9012 to save datafiles (using File I/O) to a USB flash drive.
After having run the program, I want to unmount the USB drive. Can anyone please tell me if there is a better/nicer way than just taking it out? Since this might result into losing my data if the USB drive gets corrupt (just like under Windows).
I have searched the forums, but I was not able to find anything on dismounting a USB drive on a cRIO...
Hopefully you can help me solving this (little) problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    Joep

    Joep,
under Windows there are two scenarios that could cause data corruption on a USB-Flash-Drive:
The Flash-Drive is removed during a write operation. This potentially destroys the FAT which results in data loss. There is not much that you can do against this behavior, neither on Windows, nor under VxWorks.
With caching enabled for the Flash-Drive there is a chance that files are not written to the drive completely because some parts of it are still sitting in the PC's memory. When the drive gets removed the data is corrupt.
I don't think that VxWorks uses cache for mass storage devices at all so this issue shouldn't be relevant for a cRIO-9012, but I will double check if this is true.

Firefox keeps halting when what seems to be a Flash video runs.

P.S. "scoobidiver" in the contributors forum just posted the following:
Since Firefox 9, all issues with slow Flash content or hangs in the French support forum have been caused by the Ask toolbar although users have uninstalled it with the Windows Removing Program feature. Sometimes, they don't even know it was installed.

'''EDIT:''' If the Ask Toolbar is installed, try these removal instructions, which link to a ToolbarUtilityTool.exe removal tool: <br>

  • Problem unmounting USB flash devices

I have a Western Digital external USB hard drive that works just fine on my iMac, but when using USB flash drives the system will hang when attempting to unmount them. When I say hang, I mean I get the spinning color wheel mouse cursor and I can't do anything. However, when I pull the flash drive out of the port, the system suddenly frees up.
Anyone experience this? The flash devices I'm using are a SanDisk Cruzer Titanium (2gig) and a SanDisk 6 in 1 reader that I use for various flash cards.
    Dana

Thanks for the reply. No I don't use any of the software that came with the drives. And while I usually delete from one of the devices (my camera flash card), the other device I simply was reading and writing to.
The only thing in common is that they are all SanDisk devices. I doubt that could be the problem, but I'm going to try another mfgr just for kicks.

  • Flash grinding to a halt because is not unloading media

    hi guys,
i've a got a huge (relatively) problem ni that i've created a Flash app with a dynamic data structure which ends in 150 different nodes.
each node (if visited) loads in between 5-10 images and a couple of movies.
The data for each node and its consequent external media are all displayed in the same visual class that is only instantiated once.
The display object that contains the jpgs and movies is cleared of all child objects before the next node loaded.
Yet the size of the flash file (according to windows task manager) never shrinks and very soon reaches 1mb in size at which point it starts to chuc badly.
It's my understanding - even though i'm using 'removeChild' on each object and resetting any references to the said child objects - that they are not being removed from teh cached memory and for whatever reason not being picked up/emptied by the garbage collector?
    Does this sound about right?
If so, can anyone suggest HOW i can make it so that the loaded media is removed from memory when it is element is removed (removeChild etc)
All help greatly recieved as this project is due to be delivered later this week!
    regards, Rich
Ps.  running on Windows XP SP3, Firefox, FlashPlayer 10, Flash CS4 published for Flash player 9, written in AS3, all external meia is *.jpg and *.flv

hmm, good article which makes sense.
i'm using removing the container from the stage using removeChildAt()
and then reseting the array that stored the references to the items that were within the container.
there don't seem to be any other references, the loaded objects are not referenced or passed around outside of the container
if you can't force garbage collection can you adjust the threshhold or what triggers it.
I am, at this stage, unsure whether the items are marked for collection but it isn't firing or it it's firing but they're somehow (as you say - likely through being referenced) not being marked.
is there any way to track an objects reference count?

  • Flash update not acknowledged - browsing halted - AGAIN - why? AGAIN

Once again, I am stopped and forced to perform the weekly Flash plugin update, I do so, then the new Flash plugin is not seen by websites and I am told to Install Flash, again. Then I notice that there is a new Firefox upgrade since last week. Guys, after YEARS of this, it's just gotten really, really OLD. You guys are causing more updates than Microsoft, it's a weekly deal now, and the updates keep having the same problems.
I'M SO SICK OF DEALING WITH THE SAME FLASH PROBLEMS WEEK AFTER WEEK I COULD SCREAM. But Google Chrome sees the new Flash and works fine... I really like your products but you are running me off with this pitiful QA situation and NEVER BEING ABLE TO *USE* THE BROWSER.

What is pokki? What is your operating system?
