Flash update appears to have bricked my laptop; please don't laugh

I'm at a loss here.
So last night I was watching Netflix and YouTube, and the next thing I knew, Norton NIS started popping up multiple "Rootkit blocked" warnings, and then YouTube stopped working. It seemed like the Flash player malfunctioned. It would show an empty black box where the video is, and when I would right-click on it, it would just say "movie not loaded" in the context menu.
After a few minutes of YouTube not working at all, I got a dialogue box to install a Flash update, which usually happens at boot. Made sense, so I clicked on it, but it didn't fix anything. Norton popped up a few more identical "Rootkit blocked" messages, and then popped up a message that "Restart is required to continue fixing your computer."
I did backup my most important info, so I'm not completely stupid, but just as I suspected, once I hit the reboot, the computer bricked itself. It refuses to boot into Windows. I get an error message, then a black dialogue screen at BIOS or POST or whatever you call it that asks "Start Windows normally" or "repair mode." Starting normally just loops back to the same error dialogue, and repair mode just asks for boot disks, which I cannot find at the moment.
Now, if that were the only problem, that's one thing, but here's the real problem:
That whole process with Flash broken on YouTube and then Flash trying to update and Norton NIS mistaking the Flash update for a rootkit...it's happening on my second computer now. I'm not going to run a Flash update, and I'm not anxious to even reboot the computer anymore, until I can figure out what just happened here.
So can anyone help me? What might be going on?

Well, thank you for all the responses; it's all turned out well enough. It seems that it was indeed a virus masquerading as a Flash update, and I'm inclined to think it happened because I skipped months and months of Windows Updates.
I'd been using a cloned SSD, so I dropped my old hard drive back in and went from there, installing all the Windows Updates and antivirus updates. I used a separate computer to scan the infected SSD over a USB adapter, and it turned up a single "trogan.gen" virus. Once it was cleaned up, I pulled off all my new files onto a separate hard drive and wiped the SSD, and then used it to clone the hard drive again. Back in business.
I suppose I could have tried to rescue the SSD without having to pull everything, but it was so much easier just to clone the hard drive again, since I didn't have any new paid software.

  • Adobe flash updater appears to lock user profile files in Windows 7

    Hello All,
    I don't own any Adobe products, but I wanted to put this up so that others who run into this issue can find it, and hopefully Adobe will look into it if it's common.
    This evening, I had just restarted my computer (Windows 7 RC), and after an usually long load time, I found myself loading into a profile other than my own.  Windows informed me that it has been unable to access my user profile and so had booted me into a temporary profile.  I noticed that the reason for being unable to access the profile was that it was being accessed (locked) by another program.  I rebooted.
    This time when I logged in, I was taken to my own profile, but before it loaded, I received a message from windows stating that it has been unable to open the user profile, and at the same time I saw a prompt from the Adobe Updater asking me if I wanted to upgrade to the next version of Adobe Flash.  After closing the dialogs, my profile contained everything for my desktop, but my windows settings appeared to have all been disabled (meaning Windows Aero was turned off and everything looked...odd--like an older version of windows squeezed into the updated Windows 7 interface).
    Taking a guess that the prompt from the Adobe updater may have been responsible for locking the profile while it was awaiting a response (somehow I guess it was running BEFORE windows loaded the user profile), I uninstalled all my adobe products and rebooted.
    Issue solved. Presumably, installing the update when you first see the prompt and not waiting for another time after a reboot would also bypass this issue.
    So it appears that the Update prompt locks the Windows user profile in Windows 7, which causes a problem because (maybe only on machines that don't auto login?) it appears to run before the profile loads: so it has a user profile file locked waiting for a response from the user, which can't come because the profile hasn't been loaded by Windows (so the user can't see the prompt), but Windows can't load the profile because the file is locked...sort of a soft dead lock (since I was sort of able to get in eventually).
    Wanted to get this out, and was also wondering if anyone else has seen this issue.

    Has anyone else seen this and know what broke? Cursory investigation looks like a Perl version mismatch and somebody in build land at Apple didn't catch it?

    The issue is that amavisd-new got updated to 2.6.4, whereas a stock install of 10.6 server had an older version of amavisd, amavisd-new 2.5.1

    and see the information about introduction of DKIM signing and verification.
    So what's happening now is that amavisd is attempting to load DKIM features.
    So - since you haven't demonstrated any information about attempting to pursue this matter on your own, it's probably best to just disable it for now. Because it's something you weren't using previously, and so you probably aren't going to miss it for now.
    Edit amavisd.conf (please don't use a GUI editor, go with nano or vi) and add:
    $enabledkimverification = 0;
    $enabledkimsigning = 0;
    save the change and ensure the permissions are still good on your amavisd.conf file.
    Stop mail services wait 30 seconds and start mail services again.

  • Software update says i have applications open when i don't

    Software updater tells me I have applications open when I don't.  Now I can't even shut down the installer. HELP!

    Didn't  the installer give you an opportunity to quit it when it gave you that message?
    What were you updating?
    You should be able to force quit the installer just like any other app but depending on what you were installing when it failed, and depending on where in the installation process it failed, you could leave your system in an inseminate state.  That may mean you mght not be able to reboot.

    I recently (last Thursday) updated my BB at the request of the device manager. I was preparing to back-up and was prompted to make updates. I did and now my contacts, calendar and pictures appear to be gone. However, when someone calls me their name shows up, so I'm wondering is my data someplace where it can be retrieved or restored.     You know that is the strangest part. Many people that I talk to say the same thing. It is intermittent and started out of nowhere. I realize that a moving target is the most difficult to analyze and deal with but I know that many Apple users are starting to feel left out in the cold. I am not an expert and would not pretend to be. I am a musician that was convinced that Mac was the way to go because of it's rock solid performance and ease of use or so I had been led to believe. I am very frustrated and just want to get on with the creation. This is not what I had thought it would be... I had added new RAM and the timing was terrible because a bunch of updates went through at the same time including a plug-in Manager update. Once I recognized that there was issues with the sound, (when I was demoing for a potential client) I switched the RAM back to my original which never had an issue but the problem persisted. Is it possible that I may have to zap something to reset the CPU or something? My computer tests show that both the Kingston RAM 2x2ghz and the Samsung RAM 2x1ghz (original) work fine so I do not think that that these are the issue. I am going to take it to an Apple store which is a couple of hours away but this is an inconvenience that I was hoping to avoid not to mention any associated costs that I may incur. I may have to sell the Macbook Pro to afford the gas to get there.

  • Update appears to have erased my ipod's contents! Can I retrieve?

    While using iTunes to add songs to my ipod, I was told there was an update ready to install and I chose to update it. I followed the steps which included connecting it to the mains to finish the update. However, afterwards my contents (all music files) were gone. It had said contents would only be erased if you chose restore. I am certain I chose update and therefore according to ipod support, my contents shouldn't have been affected. What has happened and how do I get all my much loved music back?

    Go to settings/about on the iPod. Does it show used space, or is the iPod empty? If it shows used space, you may have some success with retrieving the songs with a 3rd party program such as Yamipod.
    If it's empty, then you have a possibility of again retrieving the songs using data recovery software, as mentioned in this post.

    It's not always successful and the software is rarely free, but other than that, you're out of luck.
    I strongly recommend a back up of your music for just such an eventuality as this in the future.

  • Recent Software Updates appear to have crashed OS X.4.11

    Last night everyhting working fine, I opened iTunes and got the New Software is Available message. So I opened Software Update and did the iTunes, Quicktime and Security Updates listed. After the download the "Must restart Your Computer" message came up and I did a restart. No restart. It hung on the blue screen after the gray screen. Multiple times. Tried Safe Mode. Tried PRAM. Booted off the 10.4 retail CD. Repaired Permissions. Reparied Disc. Both twice. Same thing. Did an Archive and Install. Came back to life partly. However now many aps (Apple and 3rd party) will not open at all or crash immediately upon opening. System Preferences crashes when I try to tell the Screen Saver not to put the screen to sleep, as it crashes upon waking! Tried the Combo Update to get the computer back to 10.4.11 both via Software Update and as a stand alone download. The install of the upgrade crashes every time I try. I really want my steady, functional computer back, but I'm not sure if I should do a full install off of the 10.4 retail disc or continue to try piecemeal efforts. Everything's backed up, so that's not a problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

    If everything is backed up for sure, and you Verified/Repaired the HD before and after every step, then perhaps try this, it's possibly a bad spot on the HD...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

    There may be a possibility of having conversion exit for that field. If yes, you can convert and then use in update statement.
    Check if the where clause field is case sensitive.
    For testing purpose, can you write a select query on that table with the same WHERE condition just before the update statement and see if you have the data. I am sure that your select should also fail.
    By the way, you didn't tell the sy-subrc value after the update statement.

  • Applescript Image Events appears to have memory leak (or I don't know what I am doing)

    Using Image Events to create images and thumbnails for a website. The following code results in very large memory leaks in Image Event process. I have documented results of test runs in the comments.
    The leak (or poor coding on my part) results in a total system halt if I attempt to process more than about 400 images at a time. Basically, I run out ot physical memory. I am running a new model 13" MBP with 8GM RAM.  I have to manually stop Image Events to reclaim the memory (or reboot of course).
    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

    From what you describe, this is normal (ie. correct) behaviour...
    In a dark environment, you don't need the lighting to be as bright, because youre eyes are adjusted to the darkness, and there's less ambient light. In a lighter environment, you need more light from the keys and the screen to get the same effect.
    The important thing isn't "how many bars of brightness is it set to" but "can I read the key caps and see the screen". If the answer to that question is "yes" than the automatic light adjustment is doing it's job - if it's too bright or too dim them just adjust it accordingly and then leave it on automatic.

    In what classification are these updates (I deploy critical and Security updates)?

    Until now I have only deployed updates (security etc) with Bulletin ID.
    I noticed that these IE/Flash updates does not have any Bulletin ID.
    I also saw that there where about 400 other updates without bulletin ID, but I haven't deployed any of them.
    I have a monthly deployment rule "Patch Tuesday" and monthly packages for older updates.
    Should I also include all updates without Bulletin ID in the rule or should I try to filter out only the flash updates in this case and deploy separately?(I don't want to deploy "unneccessary" updates.
