Flash Videos and accessibility
I am working with a company who has a number of flash videos
on their site.
At present they are considering converting them to Real
Player to use the SMIL standard to add sub-titles for people with
hearing difficulties, and Audio Descriptions for visually impaired
people.
With Flash becoming a generalised means of diffusing video, I
was wondering if there was an equivalent technique to synchronise
sub-titles and audio descriptions.
Can anyone help with this ?

Yes, why not? There are some tools like this one:

This is ready to use solutions, so you don't need to know how
Flash
works inside itself.

Built Flash Video and will NOT show in Hosted Environment
Built Flash Video and will NOT show in Hosted Environment.
The files generated work on development machine. I posted the same
files in hosted environment and flash will not show. I first
thought it was Vista 64 IE 7 so I switched to XP IE7 and same
results. Still it is strange the falsh works locally. I am sure it
is something simple that I am missing. Any help would be
appreciated. Thank you.
StanNickels55, I appreciate the response. Here are the
interesting facts. I had my hosting provider apply the mime type
and restart IIS. No flash video. I have Vista x64 Ultimate with I
think IIS 7 (the default IIS that comes with the OS.) The flash
video would not show in that environment until I applied the MIME
and then it WORKED. Yeah! But I still don’t have it working
on my web hosting provider with server Win2003. I thought it was
the hosting provider but I posted on my work server Win 2003 and
changed the MIME with a reset and could not get the video to work
there either.
I would like to try another angle here. Again I am using the
wizard to encode and publish the flash video. Maybe I don’t
have a settings correct. I can approach this a few ways.
1.) I can send my video to someone to post on their Win2003
server and see if they can get it going.
2.) Someone send me a short 3 second video that they produced
that they know it works on Win2003.
3.) Any other ideas? Surely someone in this universe has used
the flash wizard to encode a video and published to a Win2003
server. :)
I guess the other thing to note is when creating the flash
video I chose no controls (play, stop, pause). I want the video to
start when someone accesses the page for the first time.
Thank you for the help everyone.

How do you play a Flash video and then close the player?
I have a splash page that plays a .swf. At the end of the
video the home.html page is opened. As/after the home page launches
I want to play a Flash video and then have the player close.
I am willing to trade wife, children or beagles for the info. Are these two separate browser windows? One for the Flash
.swf and a different window for the home.html document? Is this
correct:
1. show .swf in one window,
2. open new, second, window with home.html
3. show second .swf in first window
4. close first window when second .swf finishes
If this is the scenario, then no, you can't reliably close
the first window. You can use Javascript to close a browser window,
but, if that window wasn't opened using Javascript, then it may not
close gracefully, or in the case of IE, may display a prominent
error message. -
Flash videos and menu boxes jump up and down, what would cause this?
After installing Firefox 4, all flash videos and menu boxes jump up and down. I have removed and reinstalled the flash plug in to no avail. This does not affect the playback, just the border of the video or menu box. Other browsers do not do this. Just wondering why this happens?
OK, solved the problem...
I '''''DELETED''''' the file LOCALSTORE.RDF with FF closed. Restarted and everything was back to normal.

I have a Flash video FLV file embedded in my site and
published.
Curiously when I look at it in Fire Fox browser everything
works fine but when I look at it in Internet Explorer, after a few
times go back to look at the video again many of the links stop
working.
What is the difference between FireFox and Internet Explorer?
Both have Flash player 9 installed of course.
And in the Internet Explorer I am able to see the video as
well. Just links stop work after for a while.
I have changed the amount of disk space to use for temporary
files from 50 Mb to 200 Mb in Internet explorer.
It does not make any difference.
Can anybody give me some idea please.
I have sent out question before but my site is
http://1000arts.co.uk/theartoftaichi
The video page is under the top menu call Classes.
Thank you very much.Thank you very much for your message.
Is your computer Window Vista and do you have the latest
version of Internet Explorer of which mine is.
The links stop working only after more than 2 or 3 times
visited the video page.
If it is still working with you, I may have to a go to
library to use several computer to look at my site.
Thank you very much anyway.
I am very much appreciated. -
Inserting a Flash video and the Bandwidth Monitor
I am new to Captivate, and I want to be sure I'm following
some practical guidelines for inserting Flash video in my Captivate
slides.
I know there are quite a few variables relating to practical
bandwidth usage--basically, we are creating elearning presenations
that will have "talking head" videos embedded within. These
presentations will be available for download via our LMS site, both
within the US and overseas.
I have utilized Captivate's Bandwidth Monitor to gauge the
bandwidth hit each video slide is responsible for. However, I don't
believe the numbers I'm getting back: because I've set each
embedded video to "Pause slide till end of video", all the slides
are reporting the same length in seconds, KB per sec and Video KB
numbers.
Can someone suggest a practical method for setting up the
videos such that the Bandwidth Monitor can interpret them
correctly? Can you also suggest a rule of thumb for maximum length
for each slide with an embedded video (320 X 240) in it?
Thanks in advance,

Flash Video and 8.0.2 problems
Hi. I recently installed 8.0.2 but now when I hit OK in the
completed prompt box - Insert>Media>Flash Video - dreamweaver
either crashes or it does insert the flash player but it doesn't
work when previewing in IE 6.
Has anybody else experienced this? In 8.0.1 everything worked
fine - I am doing nothing different. I've checked the active
content scripts are in the right location but still 8.0.2 is
displaying nothing (the flash content) when viewed in a browser.
Any help much appreciated,
MikeThat's incorrect. Do you see the video here in either of
those browsers?

Hi Guys,
Just like to know, if anyone has done any project with flash
video with subtitling.
I have around 20 videos of 5 mins each, I have to put the
subtitling on the videos, the text for the sub titling is available
in Excel sheets, I also have the time point for the subtitling.
Is that possible to load the text dynamically from the excel
sheet or any other format at the given time point in the flash
video.
Any tutorial available for the above topic? please provide me
the link.
Thanks in advance
regardsb_pandey,

I haven't, but I've done projects in which video had to be
synchronized
with other events.

Excellent; you're all set!
> Is that possible to load the text dynamically from the
> excel sheet or any other format at the given time point
> in the flash video.
Not from an Excel sheet, no. But Flash can load text files
and Flash
can interact with databases via PHP, ASP, Cold Fusion, and
the like. Given
the time-sensitive nature of your project, however, I would
put the
subtitles right into the SWF itself.
> Any tutorial available for the above topic? please
> provide me the link.
You'll want to read about "cue points" in the documentation
and online.
Here are two tutorials I found by Googling the terms "Flash
video cue
points" ...
http://www.mediacollege.com/flash/video/cuepoints.html
http://www.actionscript4designers.com/wmg3/cuepoints_briefly.html
The second one involves screens, which you probably don't
need, but the
*concept* is, of course, the more important part. The first
tutorial is
more likely to help you.
I would put all the subtitles into an array and use the
cuePoint event,
as described in tutorial #1, to populate the same dynamic
text field over
and over again based on strings in the array.
What this means is that you'll want to familiarize yourself
with the
Array class. Start small, at first. Start a new FLA
altogether and create
nothing in it but an array.
var subtitles:Array = new Array();
Then push items into the array.
subtitles.push("Hello, Ginger.");
subtitles.push("Why, hello, Fred.");
subtitles.push("Care to dance, Ginger?");
subtitles.push("Oh, yes! Let's do!");
Then use trace() to test your understanding of how to pull
information
again from the array.
trace(subtitles[0]); // zero is the first element
trace(subtitles[1]);
trace(subtitles[2]);
// etc.
A for() loop can retrieve them all. Just substitute the
numbers for a
variable that represents numbers.
for (n=0; n<subtitles.length; n++) {
trace(subtitles[n]);
And so on. Looking up the "Array class" entry of the
ActionScript
Language Reference will teach you about the Array.length
property used in
the above sample. All class entries show the properties,
methods, and
events available to a given class. Properties are
characteristics of the
object, methods are things the object can do, and events are
things the
object can react to.
Once you understand arrays, look up the FLVPlayback in the
documentation
and/or follow along in the above tutorials. Just realize that
you'll use
the concepts described to meet your own needs. If you prefer
not to use the
FLVPlayback Component -- and you may not -- look up the Video
class, and
also the NetStream and NetConnection classes to learn how to
load FLVs
without a Component (the NetStream class features an
onCuePoint event). See

Flash Videos and pictures in the same slideshow?
Is it possible to create a slideshow with videos and photos? I have a wedding decoration website which presents in the first page decoration venues, in http://www.drhousse.com i want to alternate flash photos with videos in the same slideshow, is it possible?
In Settings somewhere there's a Playlist option to show All Playlists - if it's only set for music playlists it may be ignoring any other media.
Will test later. -
How to embed Flash video and control skin using HTML?
I am trying to use HTML to embed a flash video, however I encounter the following errors:

</OBJECT>
Whenever I open the page I'll get a popup window with the above errors and once I click "continue" it will go ahead and play the video, but without the control skin. Can anyone tell me how to get the skin to show up?I found a solution at this thread. Basically, you just have to move your skin file (ie. SkinOverPlayStopSeekMuteVol.swf) to the same directory as your index.html file.
doghouseJim, thanks for the link. Although I didn't have to use swfobject in this case it is still good to know. Also, I didn't know that Flash can generate the HTML. This is a quick and easy way to see the video in a web browser and if you're using Firefox you can go to View > Page Source to see the code. If you just want to see the HTML, then all you have to do is go to File > Publish Preview > HTML and it will open a web browser where you can view the page source. -
Hi Guys
I'm trying to insert a flash video file (FLV) that has the
controls as a separate swf using SWFObject. The flash was created
in Flash 8.
I'm not sure of the actual code I need to get this to work
though.
The html file that should contain the flash is
/Careers/index.html.
These files are in the /Careers/flash/ folder:
ClearOverPlaySeekMute.swf
complete_david_w_headshot_small_controls_over.swf
complete_david_w_headshot.flv
I have also tried inserting the Flash Video using Dreamweaver
8 (Insert -> Media), however, there were two problems in IE.
1. You still needed to activate the flash and
2. When playing the video, it wouldn't play the last 2
seconds. However, pausing and the playing again from that position
does play the remainder.
I also preferred the DW 8 Clear Controls Skin over the Flash
8 one, so is it possible that I could attach this somehow to the
FLV?
I'd really appreciate some help.
Thanks

Flash videos and buttons are disappearing...?
I start my home with a site that has an editable reigon, and
a few flash buttons which are layered above a "transparent" flash
video, the video plays perfectly the first time. I proceed to click
on one of the links which leads me to another page with one of
these flash videos nestled behind yet more flash linking buttons
and a table, this also is working perfectly the first time. Then I
click yet another link from that page and am now at a simple page
that consists of only a background and 2 flash link buttons which
each lead back to the two previous pages described. If i click on
the link that leads to the first page the Flash buttons reman in
full working order on the 1st page but the video fails to start
playing again, even if I refresh. The same goes for if I click the
link to the second page described, except the buttons do not appear
as well as the flash video failing to start. I am fairly new to
dreamweaver, but have been using flash for quite some time. I
cannot paste the codes here since they are way too long. please
tell me if you have any ideas on what I should do, your help is
greatly appreciated. Sorry about this post is confusingly worded.

Both IE and FF flash videos and games slow down/lag???
Starting a half a year to a year ago, flash videos/video players and flash games on firefox and IE would run
fine for a little while and then lag/slow down ridiculously. For the videos it would lag and skip for the rest of the video, but for the flash games it goes through a cycle of running fine and then running slow/very slow for a period of time. How can I fix this? It is so annoying and can make playing flash games and watching videos with flash almost impossible some times.
I unchecked the the box for hardware acceleration already.Do you have any suggestions in terms of the slowing down/lagging issue? Also, is there an issue with flash player itself that is causing everyone to have all these problems with it ruining videos and stuff? Is adobe working on it/is there any hope that future version of flash player will get rid of the lag or has adobe gone down a path that is just going to cause problems for some people, permenantly, no matter what?

Flash videos and High CPU usage
Hey guys,
I have a macbook, and whenever I watch flash videos the fans and CPU usage shoot up. Is this normal?Ya got me. I don't run boot camp. But this appears to be normal behavior under OS X. Search the forums, and everybody seems to notice this. So that is normal for this condition. Now, you may not like it that way, and perhaps Windows does it differently, for example, is able to address more memory with the video card, which is a known issue, but for the Mac running its native OS, it is normal. Normal means that this person's computer is not doing anything any different than anybody else's MacBook.
