Flash videos and High CPU usage

Hey guys,
I have a macbook, and whenever I watch flash videos the fans and CPU usage shoot up. Is this normal?

Ya got me. I don't run boot camp. But this appears to be normal behavior under OS X. Search the forums, and everybody seems to notice this. So that is normal for this condition. Now, you may not like it that way, and perhaps Windows does it differently, for example, is able to address more memory with the video card, which is a known issue, but for the Mac running its native OS, it is normal. Normal means that this person's computer is not doing anything any different than anybody else's MacBook.

  • Weak performance and high cpu usage

I've been wondering for sometime now, how can some flash games run so laggy on my pc at the same time where i run DX and OpenGL games without any problem and smooth!
Whenever i play games in FB or any other site, i notice high cpu usage about 70-90% especially when i run them fullscreen (1152x864) and with effects enabled then my system kneals almost!!!!!! This is UNACCEPTABLE of course..
I also found an interesting article which i dought if it has been updated as it was supposed to, which is the following link: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5417983#5417983
I run Flash player on an Intel E5700 - Win XP sp3 - 4GB ram and an Nvidia GTX650.. for those who understand, such a system is in position to run flash games like an adult holds a baby in his arms... so either the hardware acceleration does not work or adobe has let this problem unresolved for years now as i have made an interesting research on this case before i come here.
For the records, i run flash games within Chrome since it's proved to be the most apropriate browser for videos and flash-shockwave games.. firefox comes 2nd to me and IE 8.....leave it unused better!
Even in 2006 up to today, people are facing high cpu usage and weak performance in flash apps no matter what pc they have, so who is to blame here?? Adobe ofc.
Is there anyone who has a solution to propose or has found somethin relevant to this case? Or should we wait a solution in 2020?

Mike M., i didn't give any load or credit on u, but Adobe, as i see you're not responsible for their mistakes or ignorance so i have nothin to ask from u, i have seen that u reply to ppl and good for u.
All i have to say to what u replied, is that, what if win xp reach the end of life? i mention a problem that remains for years now and is unresolved, or didn't they see that the previous years?since 2008 let's say!!!
I have noticed the same exactly behavior on newer OS and specifically tested on Win Vista 32-64 and Win 7 32-64 too..... it's EXACTLY the same behavior, so it's not OS dependant, i won't take any excuse for Adobe cause i have experienced their terrible work on flash-shockwave for too long.
It's their responsibility to solve it but they have chosen to ignore this and many other mistakes that users report weekly for years, their response is 2/10 solved... it's just disgusting. I dont' want to argue with anyone for Adobe's shake, they don't worth it.

  • Firefox very slow and high cpu usage!! (all other browse slow too)

Sorry, I asked it in 'Newbie Corner' , but still no resolved. so I asked here.
    Hi all,
when i open a website just as www.sohu.com,   my firefox (3.0.3) hang on, then display the web page very slow , and slow scroll , firefox cpu usage nearly about 100.
            I tried some sloution,like modify /etc/enviroment to set MOD_DISABLE_PANGO=1,
or disable 'tell me if a web site ...' in firefox security option.
    but still slow.
some people says it's must because flash or some js.
but when  i try it in windows or ubuntu, it very fast, not like in archlinux.
so i think some thing wrong in archlinux.  I need your helps.
    thank you.
    p.s.
    1.  pacman is very fast (the speed of wget about 400k/s)
    2.  gnome web browser like firefox , slow and high cpu.

  • Skype vdeo call and high cpu usage on Mac

    Hello,
I have seen many posts around skype video call causing extremely high CPU usage which in turn causes a lot of heat and fan starts to go crazy. This does not seem to happen on Windows. I have trawled various forums and tried everything but to no avail.
Finally the workaround that worked for me was simple - during a call when CPU usage is going through the roof and the fans going crazy - just share your screen for a few seconds with the caller and then unshare. CPU usage dramatically falls off and stabilises at around 38% to 40%. I have noticed this my Macbook Pro (2013 2.3ghz, 16gb RAM) running Yosemite.
This is definitely a problem with Skype. Guys; please fix....

Did the sharing and unsharing of screen stabilise your CPU usage? I also tried deleting the Library/Caches/com.skype* directory and whilst it helped initially, in the long run it did not work. The only thing that worked for me was sreen share and unshare.
Personally I am just getting more and more disappointed with OS X. The way they have implemented HiDPI support with scaling (downscaling and then upscaling) is just insane and a lot of applications struggle. I am sure this is not the root cause of the high CPU usage issue for Skype. It's not long before I come off the Apple ecosystem altogether.

  • Screen Sharing freezing and high CPU usage

    Hello all,
I use screen sharing to remote my mac mini as a media server connected to ma HD TV to play movies, music and surf.
Since I upgrade to mavericks on my macs (Macbook Pro Retina and my Mac Mini) I have some troubles with the screen sharing feature.
No problems with the login step, the connexion is fast, all permissions are OK (I saw there were a bug with some RDP release) but sometimes, when I use fullscreen software as VLC, Firefox, etc (not the native apple full screen feature, I just clic on the + at the top of the window), my sreen sharing freeze and I can't do or move anything on the remoted mac mini. I'm unable to close (or reduce) the screen sharing app too, it's totaly busy (But I can see the movie or the website on the 2 computer, there is no deconnection)... I have to kill the process through the monitoring activity.
During the freezing time, I try to use vnc light from my Iphone and I have no problem, I can move the mouse, reduce le VLC windows... As soon I reduce the VLC windows, the screen sharing works again. I also use the logitech TouchMouse to remote the mouse, everything work fine.
Here are a screen shot of the monitoring activity of the Mac running the screen sharing app, we can see that there is a very high CPU usage when I use VLC in fullscreen on my mac mini. The first is in normal mode. The second is in freeze mode. Screen Sharing is named "Partage d'écran".
Can someone help me to fix that, everything works fine with Mountain Lion.

I have a Macbook Pro 13.5" 2.8 GHz 4 core (2 real, 2 hyperthreaded) i7 machine running with 1920X1200 display, 3 virtual screens and VMWare adding a few virtual screens (full sized).  I have another Macbook Pro 15" with 2.6 GHz Haswell 8 core (4 real, 4 hyperthreaded).  I see the problem using Screen Sharing on the 15 inch (Retina screen) mode simulating 1920 X 1200 pixels using Screen Sharing to the 13.5" Macbook Pro.
When I get the ScreenSharing problem, I have identified it as related to the VMWare screen on the 13.5" Macbook Pro being shown through Screen Sharing on the Retina Screen.  Before you conclude it is a VMWare problem, the computations are only on the Screen Sharing client side, not on the server side running VMWare.  The mouse gets unusable through Screen Sharing.  If I physically move the mouse on the 13.5" Macbook, no problem.  If I switch virtual screens, the Screen Sharing goes to normal processing.
I see an appearance of a compute-bound thread on the Screen Sharing client.  It takes 100% CPU on one thread, the machine as a whole is 12.5% busy (the performance monitor considers all 8 threads as equal when in fact, they are not).
A few more pieces of information.  The VMWare client ends up having a lot of overlapping windows with a lot of changing graphics.  My mouse runs into problems especially when it is overlaying a changing plot (Perfmon running in Windows 7, or updating email client).  It does turn out that VMWare has a "native" VNC server built-in and I tried to connect to the virtual screen using the Screen Sharing Client on the machine with computing problem and voila!, no problem.  I end up having a Screen Sharing Client running native running screen (supposed to be VNC, but I have not verified that) sharing protocol on a virtual screen that is NOT the VMWare virtual screen and a separate session using actual VNC protocol using the VMWare VNC server.  It works perfectly fine.
If I may hazard a guess, I think I know what the bug is, or at least, what is the nature of the problem that I have.  The rest of you may have a different bug.  When I have difficulty, it is because I am on a window that suppresses the dock, both in remote virtual screen and on the local machine showing the screen.  Two docks are suppressed, one remote, one local.  Throw in overlapping windows with changing graphics in the overlapped windows and toss in a mouse on top of that.  I think that the Screen Sharing is trying to refresh overlapping windows with mouse and going through the suppressed dock calculations and never converging on what the picture should be.  The mouse ends up being the visible cue that shows the time frame for iterating the windows - flickers with a timeframe of greater than a second.  That is far greater than the screen update time.  It is totally compute bound with all the overlapping stuff that it is deconflicting.  At least, that is what I think is going on.
Meanwhile, the VMWare VNC server appears to send out a single graphics context and causes the Screen Sharing client to converge to a picture.  Note, the mouse appearance is very different when attaching to the VMWare VNC Server rather than the ScreenSharing native server.  I see two mouse renderings, the virtual machine remote and a mouse rendering from my Screen Sharing client side.  They are mostly in sync in position unless I move the mouse very quickly.  If I use Screen Sharing client and server instead, I usually see only one mouse, the client side's mouse rendering.
I have a solution for my problem.  It is similar to using a different VNC server/client pairing.  I will use a VNC server for the systems giving me trouble that is not Screen Sharing Server exercising a probable bug in the Client (though, it could be a problem in the design of Screen Sharing itself).

  • USB Devices Not Detected and High CPU Usage

Hello, I'm using arch on a Dell 1720 laptop.
I have some weird issues involving detection of USB devices.
When the laptop is on battery and I plug in a USB mouse the power flickers on and flickers off again; nothing in the logs/dmesg.
If I then connect the AC adapter the reconnect the mouse, the same happens, except the CPU usage hits 87%+ on one core.
    Running
    sudo rmmod ehci_hcd
solves the problem; the CPU usage drops and the mouse gets detected.
Subsequent attempts to hotplug USB devices does nothing, no high CPU and no Power.
Rebooting the computer is the only way to use USB devices at the moment.
    usb-autosuspend is disabled in laptop-mode.
    uname -a:

The same happens with the stock kernel too
    My kernel line in grub:
    kernel /vmlinuz26-ck root=/dev/sda3 elevator=bfq ro resume=/dev/sda2
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

Last night I hibernated my computer after not using any USB devices, on resume, my CPU usage was 100%, removing the ehci_hcd module fixed it.
    Any more ideas?

  • Opera and high cpu usage

    Hello all!
I have this annoying problem with opera.
After 1-2 hours of running opera cpu usage jumps to about 60-80%. To stop this I have to close opera and restart it.
I mostly have about 30+ tabs opened, but this shouldn't affect the cpu usage. It didn't in the past. I used the opera-devel-qt4 (10.20_4744-1) package from AUR and now I switched back to the "default" opera (10.10-2) package.
This started some days ago, and i cannot find out what causes this.
    Any suggestions?

I have no plugins running and killed the wrapper.
However it worked fine for the most time. I noticed opera has a higher usage than firefox. But now it's barely usable. Every 3-5 hours I have to stop and then restart opera. With the bundled version it's a little better. But it still freezes for some seconds with high cpu usage.

  • Conky and high CPU usage

I originally posted this in the Newbie Corner, as I consider myself a newbie, but got no answers there and I think my issue is pretty kernel-HW-related, excuse me for re-posting.
I was editing an old peaceful Conky and it somewhen started making high use of the CPU (around 30-40% avg.). As I couldn't figure out where the problem was, took out every configuration line in the conky file and ended up with the few following lines, which are by themselves triggering the same high CPU usage. I don't have much experience with Conky, could anyone explain me if this behaviour would be expected from this simple code or is there something else?
    Thank you.

  • Video Streaming - glitchy playback and high CPU usage

    Hi,
I'm running a mid 2007 macbook with OSX 10.5.8, and I am experiencing issues playing back video from a large number of websites. Specifically BBC iPlayer, and other OD sites, but others too. HTML5 playback seems to be okay.
I tried changing from Safari to Chrome, and this seemed to make no difference, and even though I tend to run a lots of programs and have lots of tabs open, I get this issue when I'm not running anything else.
When I look at my CPU usage, its constantly running at 80% when the video is running fine. Then it leaps to 100%, and the video fails and get stuck. Sometimes continuing the audio, but with the image frozen. I think the computer gets too hot, and slows the CPU speed down, resulting in the glitches.
I'm pretty certain my problem lies with Flash. As when looking at activity monitor, this is the process that leaps into action and drains my CPU when video is playing. I'm currently using the latest versions of everything. My computer should be fast enough to playback these (admittedly very compressed) formats without really struggling. So something must be wrong in software somewhere!
If anybody has come across this issue, and found a solution, it would be great to hear it!
    Thanks in advance.
    Jamie

    The Adobe web site has recent versions of Flash player and Shockwave player;
among them, are ones for certain web browsers as well as specific OS X system
versions. As in PPC or Intel-based Mac systems of a certain build number range.
And the download package for each product includes an Uninstaller so the old
player may be removed first, before installing the newer one. Keep in mind, the
most recent players they have may not work with your older OS X system, so
be sure to read and look around. I've found several versions, including ones that
do OK for my G4 computers running 10.4.11 and 10.5.8.
The older computers have different possible issues, but yours is new enough to
not have graphic processor or other hardware limits increasingly PPC-Macs have.
And then with streaming content and changes in software/hardware, some factors
are beyond the reach of older computers, when left behind due to a new direction.
    You computer may also be a candidate for some general & preventative maintenance;
depending on how it is used, how often it sees huge file transfers and other variables.
My computers can stay on (including sleep) for over 170 days and not act oddly. There
are things that can improve by simply restarting the computer; or start in SafeBoot to
then run Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions' to alleviate some basic glitch or issue.
If specific graphic content related 'cures' don't make much difference, consider the
whole computer approach for general health to make it work the best it can; then any
other causes of slowness may be more pointedly addressed, by selective direct means.
    The specifications of your computer indicate it should be able to handle OS X 10.6.6;
but a direct upgrade is not recommended unless the existing issue is investigated.
There may be underlying hard disk drive issues or other logical errors behind troubles.
Are there any Console logs relating to actions the system takes while processing video?
They'd be listed by time/date and could show other things going on, outside of Flash
players or compromised basic computer functions that appear now only under stress.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Flash causing abnormally high CPU usage and overheating when browsing internet

    Hello,
Flash Player (Safari Internet plug-in) spikes to 110-120% of my CPU usage while browsing the internet. This also causes my computer to overheat. (This also occurs when using Firefox)
I am running OSX 10.8.4 and I am using Adobe Flash Player 11.8.800.94
I have tried uninstalling through the Adobe uninstaller and resetting Safari and my computer.
I contacted apple care and they said it was a problem with Adobe and I needed to contact you guys.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Flash player and high cpu load again

It is that time again.  Nothing new to report, it appears others have the same problem, so I copied a couple of comments posted last year by nationfam1 that accurately describe the problem.  The only difference for me is that I almost exclusively use Firefox.
"Why does flash player demand so much cpu usage all of a sudden when a year or so ago it did not do so and worked better on FF 3 different browsers? I now use Firefox version 24.0 28.0  and IE 10 and when I watch a video or play a game Flash player all but crashes my computer by using almost all of the power of my CPU!
...when I am on Firefox and try to watch a video or play a stupid game to relax I cannot hardly do so because Adobe Flash Player sucks up all the CPU and RAM to operate. Why do two instances of Adobe Flash Player run when I am playing one game in one tab and only have one window open. It did not use to do this. I was asked for feedback on one of the games and I told them it would be nice if the utility that the game was based off of did not screw it up all the time. Have you not read in these forums where it has caused people's computer to overheat to the extent of crashing..."
I have updated FF (build # 28.0) and the plugins but no success, does anyone have a suggestion or two?
    Regards

Hi ... I use admin account only to install new software or games ... for all other uses I log in as an ordinary account
But even when logged in with admin account the same prb persists ... cause of this flash player prb I have even stopped playing  games on FB & Zynga ...
For this flash player problem I even took it to acer service center and since I have extended service warranty the engineers there ran acomplete check on ram, hdd, graphic card and they also did a complete fresh install of win 7 home premium 64 bit edition. They even completely serviced it, cleaned it and applied new thermal paste ...  but even they were baffled that my system can stand up to high intensity graphic games running from HDD or DVD rom or USB pen drive but if I try to run graphic flash player games for long ie castleville or watch a long movie on you tube then flash player can single handedly cause CPU usage to be constantly high leading to system getting heated up.
Guess will just have to be content without flash ... but some sites require flash player to be enabled and therein lies the problem

  • K8NGM2-FID problems: no usb and high cpu usage - HELP!

    hi folks,
i've setup K8NGM2-FID inside an htpc with a clean install of mce 2005 (onboard video). For the past couple of days I've noticed a few things:
    1) if the pc goes into standby (S3) and then wakes up, sometimes task manager shows a cpu usage of 50% (on the graph) but looking at the list of tasks (for all users) nothing is runing that high - in fact system idle process shows 98% (while the graph is still showing about 50%) and the system is a bit sluggish; reboot fixes this but it's getting really annoying. I've installed the latest AMD x2 driver. Sometimes it goes to 98-99% after waking up but that's been rare.
    2) i've been getting a few BSODs lately, actually all started yesterday - 3 of them in a span of about 2 hours after insalling Nero. I'm going to try to figure out what is causing it that (proabably Nero - I hope since that's easy to undo) but what i've noticed is that when the system reboots after the blue screen, none of the USB devices work (i.e. keyboard, mouse, etc.). windows has to load, then I need to go in the back and unplug/replug the usb devices which then 'wakes' them up; this can get really annoying in a typical cramped home theater setup. software restarts seem to be good - ok hardware restarts are the problem. hooking things up to a usb hub has the same effect - i.e. I need to re-plug the hub to get them to work - it just means less things to plug/unplug.
has anyone else noticed this? help save my sanity - this is driving me crazy. since this is an mce setup, it goes into sleep and wakes up several times a day so the high cpu issue when it comes up really gets in the way of using the pc. btw. during high cpu times, no mce related function (record/watch/the shell itself) is running.
    here's my setup:
    K8NGM2-FID - boots up with 3 short beeps - I think it's 1 beep pause then 2 beeps
2 gigs kingston 3 CAS (2 x 1 GIG kit) pc3200 - boot screen shows it running at 400mhz in dual channel config
X2 3800+ stock fan/heatsink with silver 5 (runs around 35-38 idle - inside a silverstone 'stereo rack' case)
    ms usb keyboard/mouse/mce remote
    coolmax 550W power
    3 140GB WD drives (ata 133 - not sata)
onboard video - framebuffer set to 128megs
latest (as of 2 days ago) nvidia and msi drivers - msi bios is the stock 3.0 (more on that later)
the bios settings are all default as far as I can tell.
    pvr-150 tuner card
    promise ata 100 card
    nec 3500dvd
all running on mce 2005 with rollup 2 and all the updates windows could find
i haven't updated the bios because i've read about other folks having blue screen problems and the suggestion has been to up the voltage for the ram (I guess the default setup from MSI is lower than it should be) but apparently that option is missing from the 3.1 and later bioses? and reading the text file, it wasn't very apparent what the bios 3.1 was fixing other than a few cosmetic bootup texts. I'm planning to up the voltage later today.
anyhow, any suggestions short of throwing the entire pc out the door are welcomed.
    thanks!

ok here's what I've found about the high cpu...
using process explorer, hardware interrups is taking all the cpu. i've tried to disable items one by one but nothing is working so far. what does work is if i choose scan for new hardware, cpu goes down to normal. standby and resume and cpu is up again. do the scan and it goes down again - without changing anything.
i've re-installed the graphic board driver, nvidia 430 drivers, sound driver. not sure what else to do. checked my drives and they are all properly master/slave set.
this is really getting crazy...anyone come across this?
i'm a bit hesitant to go to bios 3.1 since i've seen lots of posts about BSOD and i've just gotten rid of that.
    thanks
    thanks a bunch!

The almost exact 100 wakeups per second makes me wonder if Pandora tries to redraw constantly but gets throttled to 100 FPS in Firefox.
Edit: Okay, I guess I should have done a little more research before posting here; seems to be a known problem with Pandora and Chromium (on Windows and Mac also (!)):

  • CFFORM and HIGH CPU USAGE

    Dear Friends
I write my new forms using CFFORM and format=flash it have a
DATAGRIDE bind to a 3 tab form (add, edit and delete) and its
working very nice but when even a single user run the page the CPU
usage on the server suddenly jump to over 90% and I'm really scared
to launch it live, does any body has any suggestion?
    Its a MX7 (7.0.1) Enterprise version running on a 4 CPU
Windows 2000 Server (SP3) with IIS 5, I already installed all
    latest updates and hot fixes.

"Does the instance with the high counts receive more traffic than the other instances? Is it possible that the load balancer not
working the way it should be?"
How can I get that information? I can't see metrics for a specific instance
"Does it always happen to the first instance?"
I will check it better, but in the order given by the Processes panel it's the second instance which has the issue. The scaling is at 2 instances for the most part of the time (it's the minimum).
Maybe one time it was the 3th instance but I'm not sure, I'll give it more attention.
" How long do these moment last?"
The time can be 10 to 30 minutes, but I fix it as soon as I see the problem. It's not the down-scaling to resolve it because in these situations the CPU as well is high so the scaling holds or increases the number of instances.
"- How often do these moments occurs?"
It occurs quite often, 2/4 times a week.
