Flashback - can SL mount really really old CD volumes (non-Mac)

The short answer is NO - but I'm wondering if there is a work around?
Back in the days of System 9 and before a program called "Access PC" from Insignia was able to mount DOS and other non-Mac Data formatted discs on a Mac. I have a few such CDs and wondering if there is a modern day counterpart to this - or "Mount Everything", another handy tool from those days that helped read any type disc.
In some cases, the volumes we have may not even be DOS...but proprietary data. Still, data is data, yes? they can be copied in Toast - but not seen.

Looking into it further, one I have appears formatted as "Partition Type : CDROM_Mode1"
Probably not helpful, but even Toast cannot mount it - only make copies. I guess that will have to suffice. The thought was to be able to consolidate and backup this old data onto another format, DVD, HD, etc.

    Pages? Can I open really old Claris Works documents with it? I don't want to spend $20 to find out. I saved a bunch of stuff back in 1996, and now i need to open it.

    Pages opens strictly word processing AppleWorks v6 files.
    The problem with ClarisWorks files were they could contain all sorts of objects from databases to spreadsheets, drawings and paint. the iWork suite is not that versatile.
    But you really have little choice as ClarisWorks and AppleWorks are both history. If you are going to switch, the sooner the better.
    Just keep in mind what Apple did to ClarisWorks/AppleWorks along with many other of their appliactions and technologies theywill ultimately do to Pages.

  • Why can't Apple make 'publish changes only' for non .mac users?

    The recent iWeb update to 1.1 and the now increasingly obvious differential between .mac and non .mac features has prompted me to post here today.
    I can understand comments, passwords and search facilities being a .mac only experience because it requires server side technology. I can also understand that .mac users get enhanced features like slideshows as well.
    But why is the fundamentally *basic* option to 'publish the changes only' not available to non .mac users?
    I know uploading to .mac uses a different protocol to uploading via FTP, but I don't think it is about that. Obviously the software engine in iWeb 1.1 can now track the pages that have changed, and flag those for uploading. So if the facility to do this is not available with non .mac uploading, is this some form of crippleware? Can any software engineers comment on this or am I talking off the top of my head? [And please mods, don't delete this post - I use the word 'crippleware' in its harshest form, clearly I can still use iWeb to make fantastic websites - I am asking a technical question here.]

    OK, from reading this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=486335&tstart=0
    There is a pattern: An error occurred while publishing file “/blah/blah", while file "/blah/blah" seems to be random from one person to the next, but they all share one thing and that is communication protocol.
    For iWeb to be able to publish changes to .Mac, it has to:
    1. identify if the file exists
    2. do the following:
    2a. if not exists, copy it to .Mac
    2b. if exist, do some sort comparison - CRC checksum -
    2b1. if checksums match, don't copy
    2b2. if checksums don't match copy it to .Mac
    At least I think that's what going on, I don't have .Mac so that is best I can think of. Perhaps, some Apple SW engineers can jump in here.
    Now, the bad part is iWeb has to (and I'm assuming iWeb uses WebDAV):
    1. go thru each file locally
    2. crawl its way into .Mac (WebDAV is a slow protocol) to find the the counter part.
    3. when it finds a file that matches a client side file, it has to (some how) do checksum on-the-fly across the net work (which is slow and congested)
    #3 is I think where it failed, there are many factors here: 1) networks congestion 2) latency 3) protocol overhead 4) checksum calculation time etc...
    iWeb eventually times out because any/all of the above.
    It's nice that WebDAV can author to the host yada, yada, but it's so SLOOOOOW.
    What I would do is for every publishing, I would build a files and their checksums keep it on the host (or local, must be hidden).
    For subsequence publishing, I would (use a fast protocol like FTP) download this pre-built files/checksums list. Locally, do a full publishing, making checksum comparison, the result is delta changes; upload only those. Build a new files/checksums list upload that too.
    What I mean to say is offload everything that is possible to local machine, bandwidth is PREMIUM!

  • How can I see really old text messages without scrolling tediously?

    Hi, I'm attempting to find a way to find dialogue from a while ago. I've been texting this person daily for months, and I want to see our conversations from months ago. I could scroll tediously but it would take forever and I'm not sure my phone would even allow it.
    How can I access dialogue from that long ago and many messages ago?

    Try using PhoneView to get access to the old messages

  • Can't mount iPhone in iTunes after reload of Mac OS-X 10.4.10

    Had to reload Mac Tiger yesterday and run Software Update several times.
    Running 10.4.10 and iTunes 7.4.2 -- Just checked to be sure!
    It looks like something needed was not loaded.
    iPhoto sees the iPhone just fine... its just iTunes that is blind and I really need to sync!
    Any ideas?

    The cure!
    After reinstalling your Mac OSX (and running everything from Software Update),
    (1) you must download iTunes,
    (2) delete the current iTunes app,
    (3) install the fresh version of iTunes
    (4) restart Mac OSX
    My iPhone is now happily refreshed with new contacts and calendars and ringtones, Oh My!
    Thank you AppleCare for working through this with me...

  • Can't mount a Firewire RAID 0 volume at Startup

    I have two Firewire 400 external drives connected to a Mac mini. I created a RAID0 volume with the two drives. I find that the RAID volume is not automatically mounted when the system starts up or restarts. When I login to the machine via ssh and do a 'ls /Volumes', the RAID volume doens't show up.
    I then login 'normally' on the Mac mini and notice that right after the Mac OS X desktop appears, the volume icon of the RAID volume shows up about one second after the boot volume's icon shows up --- I'm assuming the delay is caused by the RAID volume mounting after I login.
    My question is: how can I make the RAID volume mount automatically when the system starts up unattended?
    (Note: this problem might have just happened after a Mac OS Update to 10.4.6 -- or it might have behaved like this all the time but I never noticed. I've read the threads about the hazards of updating Mac OS with Firewire drives connected . Unfortunately, I have done Mac OS Updates with the Firewire drives connected but Disk First Aid says there's no corruption.)
    Mac mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   PPC G4/1.42GHz/512K L2/1GB/167MHz bus/80GB
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.16GHz 2GB RAM 256VRAM

    I just wanted to follow-up with a correction and a workaround.
    Correction: it's a RAID1 mirrored volume that I'm trying to mount at start-up.
    Workaround: I went to my Account Preferences to automatically login as me when system starts up, and then set the idle logout time to 5 minutes (the minimum) in Security Preferences.
    It's not perfect but the machine runs unattended anyway so it should be alright. I'm now very hesitant to update to 10.4.7.
    In the mean time, please respond if you have any ideas.
    Thanks very much!

  • Can I post an Iweb blog on a non-.mac server.  I.e. Goddady?

    When I try to post an I web blog to my Godaddy account the blog does not display. I know the apple materials state that comments and searching options will not work but as far as I can see there is nothing about it not working at all.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    You do realise that wiping the disk means that everything on the disk is erased. Everything. Photos, music, emails, ...
    So the first piece of advice is to make sure you have a back up of everything.
    You need the OS disk to reintsall the operating system. You will use that disk first to erase the drive, then to reinstall the OS.
    Here's the link for the US.  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    As for MS Office, you will need the original disk that it came on to reinstall it.

    it had to do with Maverick/Aperture not supporting the same date formats as before in Smart Albums when I upgraded.
    Smart albums based on dates have always been problematic, if you use smart settings that require a date string to be entered. How the date string will be interpreted, will depend on your settings in the System Preferences > Language&Text > Advanced > Dates formats and the "Region".
    It is much safer to use "Calendar" rules in Aperture instead of "Date" rules with date-strings. Calendar rules will remain valid, if the region settings are changed in the System preferences.

    Hello tcnolen1,
    It sounds like you are trying to change the Apple ID logged into the iTunes & App Stores on your iPhone.  Use these steps:
    Changing your Apple ID account
    Tap Settings > iTunes & App Stores, then tap the Apple ID signed in.
    Sign out of the current Apple ID account and then sign in with another account or create a new Apple ID.

  • How do you connect Retina to really old TV?

    I have a Retina, Mid 2012, and would like to connect it to a really old TV that only has Composite and S-Video inputs. I don't need audio just picture. I have a mini display port to DVI adapter. Can I buy a DVI to RCA cable/adapter or does the retina not send the proper analog signal via the mini display port? If it does not, I would need some kind of break out box or i/o board. Can you recommend any inexpensive options? Thanks!

    i am not sure what to do. do you need any special
    cables.
    my tv is relatively new
    Connecting an iPod w/Video to a TV is a relatively simple task.
    First you'll need a video patch cable with 3 RCA jacks (red, white and yellow) on one end and a four terminal mini-plug on the other-- the same cable common to many portable DVD devices (AKA: Apple iPod Video Cable.) Connect the cable from your iPod to your TV.
    Next set your TV's input and make sure your iPod's TV Out is set to Ask or On (Select Video > Video Settings > TV Out)
    Finally, select and play your video.
    Note: in this mode video will not display as usual on your iPod's screen. Instead you'll see a menu display which will eventually fade to black after a few moments.

  • Rman want really old logsequence for recover

    Hello,
    Red Hat x86 - 5
    Oracle 10.2.0.2
    I have restored a database to a new host from tape, not a duplicate, but a controlfile restore, and then restore.
    run
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch0 TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS 'ENV=(NB_ORA_SERV=xxxxx, NB_ORA_CLIENT=xxx, NB_ORA_POLICY=xxx)';
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch1 TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS 'ENV=(NB_ORA_SERV=xxxxx, NB_ORA_CLIENT=xxx, NB_ORA_POLICY=xxx)';
    restore database CHECK READONLY;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch0;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch1;
    }It works fine, and when i try to start recover with this command, the time stamp is after last backup, but not after last archived redo log is backed up (hence all redo logs is on tape)
    run
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch0 TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS 'ENV=(NB_ORA_SERV=xxxxx, NB_ORA_CLIENT=xxx, NB_ORA_POLICY=xxx)';
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch1 TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS 'ENV=(NB_ORA_SERV=xxxxx, NB_ORA_CLIENT=xxx, NB_ORA_POLICY=xxx)';
    set until time "to_date('June 22 2010 23:55:00','Mon DD YYYY HH24:MI:SS')";
    RECOVER DATABASE;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch0;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch1;
    }This should work fine, however he ask for some really old crappy log:

    I have tried to manually restore the logsequences i need, and it work fine, so netbackup and commands are fine, this one work:
    run
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch0 TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS 'ENV=(NB_ORA_SERV=xxxxx, NB_ORA_CLIENT=xxx, NB_ORA_POLICY=xxx)';
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch1 TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS 'ENV=(NB_ORA_SERV=xxxxx, NB_ORA_CLIENT=xxx, NB_ORA_POLICY=xxx)';
    set archivelog destination to '/flasharea2/flash_recovery_area/xxxx/';
    restore archivelog from logseq 41871 until logseq 41875;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch0;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch1;
    }So how can i know why he wants some old logsequences, and how can i identifiy to what this belong, and what can i do to stop this from happening?
    Thanks for any help!

    How you dropped datafile? did you use offline drop? If yes thus reason is this.Hello, the one who dropped it does not work here anymore, but it seems like it was offline drop!
    If find this in controlfile (backuped to trace):
    -- Take files offline to match current control file.
