Flashback database log status

My question are
- how come the oldest_flashback_scn is 0
- how come oldest_flashback_time is empty
And I can still do "as of" query
SQL> select * from v$version;

I've setup Flashback and was working properly. I meant to setup a very small size of flashback area and tried to make it to be filled then I get oldest flashback scn "0" from the view v$flashback_database_log. Can anyone explain this for me please?
OLDEST_FLASHBACK_SCN TO_CHAR(OLDEST_FLASHBACK
0
and it was like this
OLDEST_FLASHBACK_SCN TO_CHAR(OLDEST_FLASHBACK

  • Using Flashback Database on 11g

    hi everyone,
    My 11g db is size 50 GB on a very strong Windows server.
    No performance problems whatsoever.
    If I enable Flashback Database logging am I likely to notice any performance degradation? The data is not really heaviily changed.
    What about disk space - does it use the existing redo/archive logs or does it create different logs for the flashback feature?
    Thanks for your opinions.

    If I enable Flashback Database logging am I likely to notice any performance degradation? The data is not really heaviily changed.Even if the data is not heavily changed, with the internal changes happening, there would be some activity always generating Redo/Undo. You would want to check the working of the RVWR process to see any possible waits over it. In addition to this, if the speed of the writing of RVWR is not good enough to write, you would see the contention on the Undo tablespace as it won't be freed as long as the corresponding writes are not saved by RVWR.

    What about disk space - does it use the existing redo/archive logs or does it create different logs for the flashback feature?Flashback database uses *.flb* files which , if I remember correctly ,grow in 8mb of chunks. FLasback database does not uses the existing redo logs. Yes, it does uses the archived logs in addition to the FLB logs. So before you think to use this featuture, you do want to check the retention period of the logs , also the disk space required to manage that much retention period.

  • How can I get status of 'Disable Database Logging'?

    Hi,
    in my sequence file at first I want to ask by dialog, whether sequence file should running with or without database logging. In dependance of this I want to set/reset the boolean property related with 'Disable Database Logging' checkbox in the 'Database Options' dialog callable from the editor menue 'Configure>DatabaseOptions...'.
    These setting should be only valid while sequence file is running. At next sequence file start the original setting from 'Database Options' dialog should be applied.
    Can anybody tell me, where I can find the boolean property for these? I searched in 'RunState.Caller...' but couldn't find any variable congruent with actually setting of 'Disable Database Logging' checkbox in the 'Database
    Options' dialog.
    Thank you for help.

    Hi,
    You can include the sequence callback DatabaseOptions in your sequence file which will override the callback of the process model.
    A DatabaseOptions container is passed to this callback by reference, therefore you can setup the exact requirements for your testing and override the settings defined by the Menu Item Configure | Database Options. All the setting defined in the Database Options dialog are passed to the callback DatabaseOptions in the container 'DatabaseOptions'.
    (See TS2.0 example sequence attached)
    Hope this helps

  • After Flashback database can I use my backups?

    I performed a flashback database and then opened the database with

    Now when I try the following command in rman I get this message:

    All the backups are still there but it tells me a new incarnation of the database has been registered in the recovery catalog.
    My question is: Do I need to do anything different from now on? Also can my existing backups still be used if needed?

  • FLASHBACK Database : rman vs sql command differnces

    I am new to Oracle and want understand the difference and which is the correct way of flashing back the database?
    RMAN command vs SQL Command on using FLASHBACK DATABASE
    SQL> FLASHBACK DATABASE TO RESTORE POINT BEFORE_ONLINE_TEST;  {CODE} Vs rman> run{
         flashback database to restore point BEFORE_TEST_320130313;
         sql "alter database open resetlogs"; }
    Referring this article on http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10642/rcmflash.htm#BGBDCAFA it says we can use both RMAN and SQL command for database flashback.
    Questions:
    1. Difference between using RMAN and SQL command on database flashback?
    2. When to use RMAN or SQL on the  database flashback?
    3. Which is the Oracle recommended or best way ?

  • MySQL syntax error with TestStand 4.0 database logging

    I had been using MS Access database to log results which worked fine but the access database is too limited. Switched to MySql. Database works fine and I can query it from Visual C++ and was able to create all my result tables fine from TestStand.
    I get a syntax error when actually trying to log results and it has to do with either a missing quote or and extra quote, I can't quite tell. I thought I saw a post on this somewhere but can't find it now. Here is the complaint from TestStand:
    An error occurred calling 'LogOneResult' in 'ITSDBLog' of 'zNI TestStand Database Logging'
    An error occurred executing a statement.
    Statement: UUT_RESULT.

    Any ideas?

    Sure. There were two bugs in the ini file that contains the default TS schemas (I think it was Default_Database_Options.ini or like that...).
    Anyway the table description for STEP_NUMERICLIMIT had for it's command line INSERT INTO MEAS_NUMERICLIMIT. I guess TestStand looked at that and said hmm I better create that table too. Then later down the page when you try to create MEAS_NUMERICLIMIT it says the table already exists even though it is empty. The generate SQL button builds a bad file and then the database viewer creates a bad database. I would have to go into MySql and drop the database. I had to save the schema under a custom name, edit it read it back in, generate a new SQL file, but then it would still fail validation because the ini files don't get updated until you exit TestStand. So basically I did this process 3 times before I got it right.
    It's wasn't a big deal but it's amazing how a little thing can cause a lot of work.
    The second bug, I'm not certain was initially in the file or somehow got set on the fly. There was a random int statement at the very end of the SQL table description for UUT_RESULT. It was also in the schema INI file. Since the int had no name and occurred in a odd place, it created a syntax error in MySql. Same fix as above.
    But like I said it's working great now. I like this approach because I serve it to the net with Apache and parse the database with simple PHP scripts.
    Thanks,
    Bill Peters

  • Flashback Database on Data Guard setup

    Hello!
    Win 2003 server - 64 bit
    Oracle 10.2.0.4
    As i have noticed Flashback Database is popular in Data Guard setups for the reinstate reason; you dont need to rebuild.
    However, im looking at Flashback for 'flashback database' reasons. Some developers has asked for a method to rollback if an release has gone bad, so my questions is;
    If i flashback database primary database, will standby also change due to redo log shipment?

    After flashing primary database check CURRENT_SCN in Standby. If flashback scn is greater then current_scn, then do nothing. Otherwise, on standby:
    ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
    FLASHBACK STANDBY DATABASE TO SCN "flashback_scn_number -1";
    ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT FROM SESSION;

  • Turn database logging on

    hello all,
    turn database logging on , - FRA configured, what i have to do?
    1) can i go mount status and alter database in archivelog mode and then start the database?
    or anything else like logging vs nologging, just confused

    Hi
    you can enable archivelog mode and force logging mode (for dataguard, streams,...).
    ALTER DATABASE FORCE LOGGING;
    or
    ALTER DATABASE ADD SUPPLEMENTAL LOG DATA;
    you find a lot of infos in the oracle dok.
    In which context do you ask this question?

  • Standby redo log status

    Can anyone explain what the status of clearing means when viewing standby redo log status?
    SQL> select status from v$log;
    STATUS
    CLEARING
    CLEARING
    CURRENT
    This is a bit different to what we'd see on an open database.

    Hello;
    Log is being re-created as an empty log.
    In a Standby database the regular redo are not used ( when not in PRIMARY MODE) only the standby redo logs are used. Sometimes as buffers for the redo coming from the primary.
    You should be able to change the status by doing a ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE on your primary.
    This note may help:

    Also
    Take a look at v$standby_log too.

  • A new question on how to Enable Flashback Database on the standby database?

    Best Practice document said:
    Enable Flashback Database on the standby database to minimize downtime for logical corruptions.
    I would like to know where to find document or anybody already had experience for this topic?
    Also I would like to know what is the best practice for backup/recovery of the Physcial standby database?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello;
    Just an opinion but I like the book "Oracle Data Guard 11g Handbook" as both the document and the answers to the second question.
    Chapter 12 covers the A to Z of RMAN with Data Guard.
    This book sold me on Flashback since Flashback allows a former Primary database to be reinstated after a failover operation with being restored ( provided sufficient flashback logs are available)
    My own experience is I tried a failover test without it and trash my test Primary.
    I did a simple failover test a few weeks ago, here are my notes.

  • Sql backup detected corruption in database log

    Unfortunately I am not a SQL Admin.  I have moderate SQL experience at best.
    I have  four or five database in SQL 2005 that were the primary members of a mirror. The physical server (the one I am currently working on) was virtualized (P2V) then started as a virtual machine. Downtime was minimal. Maybe an hour or so
    I believe.
    Although I didn't check immediately after boot up, I have since noticed the mirror status is suspended.  Attempts to resume fail.  It appears my best bet is to backup the database, restore on the target, then recreate the mirror.  The problem
    is, attempts to run a Full backup of the database returns the following error on all the database I've tried to backup.  After about 20% is says: SystemData.SqlClient.SqlError: BACKUP detected corruption in the database log.  Check the errorlog for
    more information. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
    I've tried setting the recovery type to Simple, but that fails telling me the database is part of a mirror and to be honest I'm not sure setting to Simple is the best option.
    As it stands, the mirror is broken and I can not perform a full backup.
    Any suggestions on how to proceed are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Thank you Uri.  Following are the results.  Again, I'm not a SQL Admin but it appears this does not indicate errors?

  • How to use Flash recovery area only for flashback database feature

    I would like to use flash recovery area only for flashback database feature, which means, flash recovery area will store only flashback logs.
    I dont want to use that file system for any other files, like archive log files, database backups, control file copies, multiplex redo log, etc
    is it possible? I want to use this feature only for flashback database option and hence i dont want to disturb any existing configuration in my database
    including backup jobs. Is it required to store archive redo log files also in flash recovery area to use the flashback database feature?
    I certainly can't afford to have a copy of entire database in this file system as size of my DB is more than the flash recovery area file system I have.
    Thanks

    Aman,
    I think i was not clear in my question. Let me try again
    My only requirement is to use flashback database feature (or be prepared to use if required). I dont want to create a large file system to use this FRA to store all these files. Out of all the files being stored here copy of data files seems to be consuming more space. I see these files are classified as transient and permanent files. I am okay with permanent files. I fear that this file system may consume more space if i store backup files on disk. I want database backups to go to tapes, not to the FRA disk. Is it possible?
    Thanks for your reply
    Okay, well in that case you can use RMAN and push the backups to the tape drives. FLB logs would be stored on the FRA.

  • Deleted guarantee restroe point (flashback database)?

    Hi!
    User create restore "guarantee" restore point like:
    create restore point full_restore guarantee flashback database;By mistake he/her delete all flashback content. Database is shutdowned.
    After trying to open, there is a know problem with flashback restore point.
    All around the internet there is a hint like:
    startup mount;
    alter database flashback off;
    alter database flashback on;
    alter database open resetlogs;But here is a problem with "guarantee" restore point which doesn't allow to open the database without having flashback files that will ensure "guarantee restore point".
    Oracle will rather die then not to ensure "guarantee" statement!!! All looks that this is a dead end situation!
    My question is : What to do in such a situation if you do not have backup ed flashback area and content is somehow lost.
    This lead to very interesting question: How danger is "guaranteed restore point" in such a cases?
    Any hint or comments more then welcome.
    THX
    Sorry if this is not right group for asking about flashback....

    'Flashback database' is a nice feature, but you should never rely on it entirely. If you've lost your flashback logs and NO regular backups are available, in case of a media crash, you are in a bad situation, because you cannot restore/recover,

  • Cannot enable flashback database??

    I am using 10gR2 10.2.0.1
    Under EM Home: it shows under " High Availability ":
    Last Backup Apr 14, 2007 8:03:33 PM
    Usable Flash Recovery Area (%) 92.35
    Flashback Logging Disabled
    When I get to the "recovery settings", I have make sure I have turned on Archivelogmode, however, the "enable flashback database" section was missing.
    What's wrong about my database settings?
    I have tried to explicitly do the standard code and have got the following errors:
    SQL> SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
    SQL>STARTUP MOUNT EXCLUSIVE;
    //report: obsolete/deprecated parameter specified"
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET DB_FLASHBACK_RETENTION_TARGET=2800 SCOPE=BOTH;
    //no error
    SQL>ALTER DATABASE FLASHBACK ON;
    //error: ORA-00439: feature not enabled, flashback database

  • Unable to do flashback database!!

    Hi all,
    I have enabled flashback database and created a restore point with guaranteed flashback database so that i can do a flashback database. When i do a flashback database, its says it needs archivelogs to do recovery. The flashback log usually will have all modified data in a flashback log files to use it for flashbacking a database. why its asking for archivelogs when all the modified data is present in flashback log itself? kindly clarify me.
    Regards,
    Pradeep. V

    Hi,
    Flashback database required the Archive log files.
    "Flashback Database is similar to conventional point-in-time recovery in its effects. It enables you to return a database to its state at a time in the recent past. Flashback Database is much faster than point-in-time recovery because it does not require restoring datafiles from backup and requires applying fewer changes from the archived redo logs."
    "No file in the fast recovery area is eligible for deletion if it is required to satisfy a guaranteed restore point. However, archived redo logs required to satisfy a guaranteed restore point may be deleted after they are backed up to disk or tape. When you use the RMAN FLASHBACK DATABASE command, if the archived redo logs required to satisfy a specified guaranteed restore point are not available in the fast recovery area, then they are restored from the backups."
