Flashes on the monitor

I am writing to see whether there is an explanation or solution even, to some odd behaviour with my mother's Mini - on all displays which has been hooked up to it, the screen flashes when sending and receiving messages on iChat (I think it is only with iChat one sees this), almost like the effect from PhotoBooth.
At first I thought it had to do with the old, clumsy display which belonged to an old PC, but then we changed to a somewhat newer display from another PC and it was still there. Today she received a new Philips 17" flat monitor and yes, it still flashed.
I'm afraid I don't remember all the technical terms here and since I am not at her place now, I can't give you the models etc., but the two first were these big, chunky things:) The last is a flat one. Hope that helps.
The Mini is a G4 and it runs on 10.4.9 with every thing updated.
I've also tried different resolutions and changed between 60 and 75 hz - the only ones active...
I searched around here, but couldn't find anyone mentioning a similar problem...

Yes, that was it! And I am almost blushing out of being ashamed! Hahaha! Why didn't I think of that? Well, perhaps I cannot understand how that option has been chosen. I can't remember I've done it and the only other ones aside from my mother who've used it, are my sister and my brother and neither one know the Mac very well.
PS: Sorry for the late reply, but it is Easter, after all:) Thanks again!

  • Lines and title flashing across the program monitor and in final export

I'm seeing very thin lines flashing across the program monitor when playing a complex sequence with 7 video tracks. They draw at various angles and span the entire screen. There can be one or more showing at any time. They are colored and each line appears to be only one color, but different lines can be different colors. Some lines are solid, others are dashed. There is also a ghosty-white representation of one of my titles flashing around the screen for only a frame or two, then it flashes somewhere else.
    Sequences and Tracks:
Base Sequence: AVCHD with disolves and color correction
Next Sequence Layer: Base Sequence placed on tracks 1 and 2. Motion is applied to both tracks. LInearWipe and Opacity are applied to Track 2.
(This creates an image in the center of the screen with a reflection.)
Next Sequence Layer (1st track of the final 7): Animates Basic3D and Motion (position, scaling)
2nd, 3rd and 4th of the seven are just like the1st. So there are 4 video screens flying around with reflections and perspective. Kind of like the iTunes album art widget - screen flies in, goes center stage, then flies back.
Layers 5 to 7 are titles. They are also nested sequences having reflections and Basic3D, but their positions are not animated.
    My system:
    Phenom II x6 1055T
    8 Gb DDR3 1333
3 Drives 7200 rpm (one program, one preview/conforming, one video)
nVidia GeForce GTX 260 (3 fans attached)
3 Case fans plus the side is open - running very cool
    MSI 890GXM-G65 Mobo
    My Project:
Originated as a CS4 project, opened with CS5 and converted (did not import). Fixed all the title screwups, missing fonts, graphics, hooked up the off-line media etc etc. There are a couple of 1.5 hour nested AVCHD multi-camera sequences which look and play great. Then there are 2 of these monster sequences which are actually used as DVD menus and are about 44 seconds each. When I render these 7 layer menu sequences and play them back, these lines start flashing across the screen.
Of course the GTX 260 has the GPU unlocked and that works great for the 1.5 hour programs. But if I attempt to render the 44 second monsters Premier stops responding and I have to EndTask it (all CPUs drop to idle while not responding). These monster sequences might test the power of the Quadro CX. So when I work with the menu sequences, I set Premiere to use software GPU and not MPE. Then I can render (2 hours render time to preview 44 seconds with six cores at near 100%). So it does render, slowly.
I'm exporting an mpeg2 file now and will let you know if the lines show up in the final rendering. I can see the lines showing up on the MediaEncoder's small preview screen as it renders. Doesn't give me comfort.
OK worst case scenario. The lines ARE in the final mpeg2 file. Makes the file unusable garbage...
Is anyone else seeing flashing lines and titles?
Here's a link to a still from the export to illustrate the artifacts.(face and name were blanked out by me)
    http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/5051/premierecs5lineandtitle.jpg
    Thanks

The crop workaround was successful for removing the lines - worked great. There was the issue of the ghost text which you can see in the screenshot link provided above. This was not removed by crop. Crop removed the lines, but not the ghost. Thankfully, the 4 point garbage mask did work on the ghost and I was able to eliminate it. I had to apply the garbage mask on the sequence where Basic3D was applied not its parent sequence where VerticalFlip was used. The most important thing is that I've successfully migrated this CS4 project to CS5 and can now take advantage of 64bit processing (more RAM) to tame the beast. I'm using this sequence as a menu for a series of DVDs so my time expended will pay me back again and again.
The asset generating the ghost was built like this...
In the titler: Text was placed over a logo (.tiff file for logo and it was scaled and moved)
Base Sequence: Title was brought to two, stacked tracks. VerticalFlip, and LinearWipe were applied to one which was then moved to look like a reflection of the other
Next Sequence: Layed the Base Sequence down. Applied Basic 3D and moved it's XY position. (This is where I applied the GarbageMask to remove the ghost)
I tried separating the logo from the text thinking that the logo feature of the titler might be the problem. So I used a separate video track and pulled in the .tiff file directly. It didn't eliminate the ghost. Applying the GarbageMask to the base sequence also didn't help. It was only after Basic3D was applied that the ghost would appear. And since I have Basic3D applied to other reflected text-only layers which do not exhibit the ghost artifact, the bug has something to do with the text/graphic combination with VerticalFlip and Basic3D.
To top it all off, I can no longer recreate the problem. I've turned off the garbage mask and it's not showing up. While I was testing, the ghost was easy to recreate, but now I can't do it. So I don't appear to be able to drill down deeper. Perhaps it will come back at some point and I can test it further and update this thread.

  • The monitor flashes

    Hello everyone!
I installed Arch only two days ago and already gives me problems.Yesterday I installed some programs (nothing special, OpenOffice, Chrome, Gathering, VLC, emesene, Gimp) and a couple of programs that are proven not compatible (osmosis and Talika). I uninstalled Talika, but I could not Osmos. However today I found that with the monitor (as if it were a refresh) every 30 seconds exactly flashes (goes black and after 1,2 seconds comes back). The system runs normally and is neither stopped or slowed down by this thing. May depend on what? Two days ago there wasn't this problem!
Thank's to everyone and sorry for the english!

    Sure. Here's one

  • The monitor flashes colors when it sits for awhile. When I hit enter it sill stop.

About 5 days ago the monitor, HP, would start flashing colors, red, green, white, blue, etc. until I pushed enter. The colors appear one at a time and fill the whole screen.
This happens when there is no activity, only the desk top picture showing.
Thank you for your help. The monitor is about 6 years old. No problems until last week.

Is this only happening in Firefox?
Sounds that a screensaver is kicking in.

It sounds as if your browser and some of your apps are not color-managed.  This is pretty typical.  Even IE9 is only partially color-managed.
You can expect color-managed and non-color-managed applications to show you different things with the same images.  How different will depend upon how different your monitor color profile is from the image's color profile.
For web publication and most general use, experts usually advise saving images with the sRGB profile.  If such images, saved through the Save for Web & Devices function, look different to you than you expect, it may be that your input images have previously been saved in another color space.
You should really try to get your head around color-management by reading more on it.  It can seem baffling and it's difficult to understand without some background.  A quick web search turns up many overviews.  Beware, though, even people writing articles sometimes don't fully understand it.

  • When in screen saver, mode the monitor/desktop fashes on-off

When I stop using my Mac mini and it is supposed to go into screen saver mode, it doesn't.
The monitor and desktop keep flashing on and off (screen saver itself never appears). This just started yesterday; no trouble before.
I never have this problem when the mini is in use.
I don't know how to troubleshoot this annoyance.
Mac mini (not Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Mac mini OSX 10.4.10

    It sounds like preferences, log back into your normal account and check your Preferences Thoroughly;
    • Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)

use the last combination the three finger reflash you will lose all your data but your phone might work, if the last code does not work you ought to contact either provider or nokia care point for assistance
*#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data)
Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list.
    *#7370# - Reformat your phone
This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. Turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
re-flash - hold the following buttons *, 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen.
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service.

  • Moved G5 and now it wont detect the monitor?

    Hello,
My father has brought his G5 to my house and when we plugged it all in and turned it on it boots ok but displays nothing on the monitor.
He does not have the keyboard or mouse with him just the tower and monitor. I have a spare apple keyboard and mouse both wireless.
We have tried different ports etc but there is no difference at all. This model has 2 DVI connections on the back.
Is there anything we can do to get the screen working?
Any help at all would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Luke.

    Older meanings...
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • Flash and dual monitors

I'm about to buy either a 20" or 24" iMac and am wondering
how well Flash works with multiple monitors under OS X. I'm coming
from Windows so I really don't know what I'm getting into. My 2nd
monitor is a 17" so I'll obviously be running different resolutions
on the monitors. Any issues with that? If there are problems with
20" + 17" monitors, I might just got with a 24" iMac and ditch the
    second display.
    Thanks a lot!
    Erik

what do you mean how well it works? im using a 24'' iMac here
at work, but at home i have dual 20'' monitors for my PC... flash
'works' fine... i dont quite understand your question.

  • Satellite A300 - Stripe on the bottom of the monitor

    Hello,
I don't why the graphic at the bottom of my monitor is completely ruined. At the bottom of the monitor it appears a 3-cm large, white and flashing stripe (half transparent, half composed of parallel tiny black horizontal lines) extending for all the width of the monitor. Plus there's a very narrow light blue, vertical line, also extending for all the height of the monitor.

    Hi andre.bo,
Can you notice the same problem on an external monitor? I had a similar issue but after I tested an external monitor I noticed, that it was only related to the internal monitor and not the graphic card.
    Check this!!!

  • I installed a new video card onto my computer...the monitor wont work!!!?

So I got a new GPU (VGA MSI NX8800GT 512M OC RT). I installed it last night and plugged the monitor into it...I know the computer sees it because the LED light turns green, then it goes to sleep. Test with mainboard out of PC case:
Test the motherboard outside of the case to verify that the motherboard is not shorting to the case and causing a problem
         •    With only the CPU and heat sink, memory, and video card (or onboard video) connected to the motherboard, place the motherboard on a non-conductive surface and retest the motherboard
         •    Check the case mounting standoffs to verify that they are lining up correctly with the mounting holes on the motherboard.

How do i run an external monitor with my macbook and change settings so that when i close the lid the signal to the monitor is not lost and i can continue using the mac with a mouse and a wireless keyboard?

No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

  • I plugged my macbook pro into an external monitor, then unplugged it later and now it is stuck with black borders on top and bottom and zoomed out like it is still on the monitor. How do I fix it?

I started using my external monitor with my macbook pro and as soon as I plug it in it to the monitor it adjusts the screen by zooming out a bit and creating about 3/4 of an inch black borders on the top and bottom of the screen. But these dont show up on the monitor so I assumed it was fine. But when I took it off the monitor, the borders were still there like it was still on the monitor. Any hellp? Its starting to mess with my eyes haha.

    Hi aefulcher,
It sounds like you had the external display set to mirror the internal display so the resolution(s) were changed to match each other.

Something in your backup may be corrupt. Try wiping it and setting it up as a new device, then sync your apps, data and media back to it from iTunes. DO NOT resotre from your backup. If the problem is contained in the backup, it will bring it right back again if you restore.
