Flashes "restore windows"

my imac flashes "Restore Windows" - "the application finder unexpectedly quit while trying to retore windows  Do you want to restore windows again?" then the choices are "Don't restore Windows and Restore Windows"  No matter which one I click the window keeps coming back up every two seconds.  Now my Safari won't open.

See if this helps...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Cannot stop "restore windows" dialog box from flashing. Please help!

Finder not working! Bouncing finder icon and flashing 'restore windows' box are driving me slowly insane. I tried a few tricks like rebooting Lion 10.7.5 and deselecting "restore' in prefs but nothing has worked. Haven't found right terminal command yet either. I shut down my Mac with Safari open and maybe Google Chrome also, and when I turned it back on...my odyssey began. If you have ANY suggestions your help would be greatly appreciated.

I got the same problem: I just purchased Office 13. When I tried to open a Word file that came viaOutlook I got the dialog box "Word can't open this file because a dialog box is open" but when I clicked further it opened the file OK and gave
me the option to remove "Protected View" which I did and everything was OK. I called MS Support and the person who answered had a very thick accent that I could barely understand. When I told him my problem he did not understand it and said the program
is trying to prevent me from opening viruses. I asked, why didn't it say instead of giving me the "open dialog box" error message? He had no answer and suggested I buy Microsoft support for $149 a year of $99 per incident. Great customer service,
eh? Then I tried this solution by unchecking "Enable Protected View for Outlook Attachments" in the Trust Center and the Word files opened normally. I am very disappointed in Microsoft but thank Mike_obe for his excellent help

  • Flashing finder icon and showing "don't restore windows" and "restore windows" text box

hi, i hav problem with the flashing finder icon and showing "don't restore windows" and "restore windows" text box. im using macbookpro MAC OS X 10.7.5. i've search for solutions, lik relaunch the finder by pressing COMMAND+ALT+esc, but it didn't work for me...
    any1 can help me, thx...

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • My finder is caught in a never ending loop of wanting to restore windows

The Finder icon is bouncing up and down on the dock, there is a popup flashing on and off on the desktop which states "Restore Windows The Application "Finder" unexpectedly quit while trying to restore it's windows. Do you want to try to restore its windows again?" It offers the options "Don't restore windows and Restore windows". Neither of these actions respond.  I have turned off; shut down etc... but it prevails.

I have it resolved now, I discovered some previous questions and found the solution. Phew!

  • Cannot Restore Windows 7

A relative came to me, asking for help. The notebook is a HP Pavillon dm4-2040ez.
I found out that HP warranty was just over and the harddisk was broken. So we ordered a new SSD and I installed a clean version of Windows 7 from my DVD, but did not activate it (30 days time to do so). I recommended to either buy Windows 8 or order the recovery DVDs. Windows worked fine so far. Owner decided to order the recovery disks.
After they arrived, I noticed that the optical drive was broken too. But the owner doesn't really need it, so I copied the first recovery DVD to an USB stick (on my PC) and made it bootable and then booted the HP machine from the USB stick. That worked fine but after booting I just get the progress bar ("Windows is loading files" or something like that) then some scripts start. Then the machine boots again - and everything repeats.
So I cannot restore Windows that way. What's the problem? Obviously not the hardware, as it worked with my installation before. Do the recovery DVDs require to start them from an optical drive or what? Or was the disk maybe broken somehow? Any other ideas?
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
The OEM key works on the retail Vista and W7 downloads, not like XP where you need the OEM disk to match the OEM key.
Follow the steps below and you will be all set.
Use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a DVD or a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
Use the 25 character windows 7 product key to activate your installation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below. Download the applicable version of Windows 7 that is on your product key (Home Premium, Pro, or Ultimate).

You can't make a bootable usb flash drive from one disk.
What will you do when the system asks you to insert another disk?
The recovery disks are image files and they are looking for the same size hard drive to install on.

  • How to restore Windows in disk utility?

So I am trying to transfer a windows image by target booting to a Mac Pro, but the windows side wont, it's giving me a no bootable device error, Help!!!.

You have not really detailed your setup and how you used WinClone, whether you have a divided disk drive or not.

    Paragon CampTune
Paragon CampTune is a commercial product that is designed expressly for this task. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/ It consists of a downloadable ISO that needs to be burned to a disc and booted from in order to resize the partitions costs US$19.95.
    Securing Dual-System Configuration
Imaging is still the most affordable and robust way to secure computer data. Unfortunately Mac OS X backs up only HFS+ volumes, leaving Windows with dual-system configurations unsecured. You can permanently lose all of your data unless you have a Windows-compatible backup solution.
Paragon’s CampTune and Paragon’s Drive Copy for Mac can secure the entire dual-system configuration. CampTune creates traditional images of volumes or entire hard disks, Drive Copy can copy them to other disks. In case of an emergency, you can restore the previously created image or copy all your data back to its original state.
    GParted Live
GParted Live is similar to CampTune as it is also distributed as a bootable image that needs to be copied to a CD/DVD or USB flash drive. As free and open source software, distributed under the GPL, it will always be available free. Since it has more functions than CampTune, it may be harder for folks who are not as experienced with partitioning hard drives. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
    iPartition
Coriolis Systems' iPartition is a £29.95 ($44.95 US) utility that runs in Mac OS X and allows resizing of all of the relevant partition formats, including HFS+, FAT32, and NTFS. It provides a Mac-oriented user interface that may be easier to manage than some of the free utilities. As it is not capable of resizing the boot disk, it requires a bootable external disk or a boot DVD. (A tool to create a boot DVD is included.)
    Paragon Partition Manager
From the makes of CampTune is a commercial tool that is similar in functionality to GParted Live, but has a more polished/friendly user interface than GParted Live. Previously only the US$79.95 Professional version supported all the features required for this, but as of version 11 the US$39.95 Personal version has also been reported to work. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-personal/
    Winclone/Disk Utility
Winclone is a free tool for creating and restoring backup images of your Windows partition. One of its key features is that it can restore to a larger partition than the one the image was created from.
NOTE: Winclone has been discontinued, but for now remains available and capable of completing these tasks (including creating and restoring Windows 7 images).
Winclone updated to support Lion Winclone updates and download
Disk Utility can resize HFS+ (Mac OS) partitions, but is currently incapable of resizing NTFS partitions, so you could use it to reduce the size of the HFS+ partition and create a new larger placeholder MS-DOS (FAT) partition
    The full process would be:
    Backup Windows partition with Winclone.
(if the new Windows partition is smaller than the old one make sure you set the preferences in Winclone to save the image as an uncompressed dmg)
    Delete old Windows partition
    Resize current Mac Partition
Create new Windows partition as MS-DOS (FAT) in free space after Mac OS partition.
(If the new Windows partition is smaller than the old one an additional step is required: shrink the filesystem on the image by selecting Tools->Shrink Windows (NTFS) Filesystem)
Reboot your computer for the new Windows partition to mount properly (winclone may not restore if you don't reboot)
Restore Winclone partition over new Windows partition
An alternate Winclone based process is described in the External Guides section
    Native OS utilities
MR user Kazyua reports that you can use the disk management utilities provided with the current operating systems if you want to do it manually. Windows 7 and OS X both have partition resizing functions built in. In OS X, open Disk Utility and manually shrink the mac HFS+ partition by dragging the lower right corner. Then in windows go to the start menu and type "disk management" into the search box then hit enter. You should get an overview of the drives you have and the individual partitions. Right-clicking on the partition gives an "Extend Volume" option. The Windows NTFS volume should then be extended into the free space you created with Disk Utility. This method has not worked for other users, so try at your own risk.

  • Finder icon stuck in constant motion- says it had a problem restoring window. It's unresponsive. I did download turbo tax yesterday- it all seemed to download fine.

my mac mini finder icon keeps flashing a sign that said it had a problem restoring a window. It asks me if I want it to restore window, but it is unresponsive. My computer seems to be working fine when I go on to safari, but my desktop itself will not respond to any requests because the finder has taken over.  I did download turbotax application yesterday... it seemed to go just fine. This might be the first time I have restarted my computer since then, though. Could the turbo have created this mess? My mini is10.7.5 intel  2.3 Ghz  so the turbo tax should have been ok.  The only other thing I did wierd was when I started up my computer this morning I sort of started iPhoto at the same time that I started its backup program so the two collided. Could that have caused this finder issue?

BD,   I am unable to find the files you suggested I move to the desk top.
When I ran the SAFE BOOT the other day, and also ran repair permissions,  I dont think it stayed in SAFE BOOT. I found no access to utilities when I was in safe boot - either I can't figure it out, or the machine wasn't letting me proceed due to the finder- I don't know which.
Today,As I was looking for the files you suggested I move (user/your user.......) to desk top, I did copy a few of the messages the mac was sending through utilities and console. I don't know if anything here helps, but I am copying a few clips below for you;  it may be all Greek to you too, however. Thank you.

Getting "Restore Windows" Application Finder unexpectedly quit. I can't restore window and see desktop. Finder icon is flashing. Thank you

    Hallo,
I tried several things but what really helped was "Main Menu Pro".
you can download a trial version from http://mainmenuapp.com/
go through the menu and clean up your disk and it should run fine. my problem was that there was some stuff in the trash that was blocking everthing. i am still using that software and it really does it without complicated procedure.
    good luck

    Hey sunnyday7!
Here is an article that can help you address this issue:
OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3411
    Additional Information
OS X automatically relaunches the Finder when it is quit. If the Finder is unresponsive, use Force Quit to relaunch it. Select Finder in the Force Quit Window or Dock, then click Relaunch.

My Finder is going crazy.  Keep getting a message saying it quit unexpectedly and asking if I want to restore windows, but I can't get it to stop.  buttons don't work.

    Something else you can try.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • How can I restore Windows 7 to Bootcamp partition - not reformat the entire hard drive?

    Hello Apple (Mac) Community,
I originally posted this question over on answers.microsoft, but no help was forthcoming. Hope someone can help me with a problem that's (almost) making me nuts! I teach graphics to college students. In brief: I run Windows 7 Pro 64 on a Mac Pro tower, along with Snow Leopard (OSX). Windows is loaded on one partition of a 1TB drive. The other partition is a Mac backup. The Mac OS is on a different drive. Everything was going swimmingly with both OS, until recently. Unfortunately, the drive with Windows showed problems and I determined that the HD was either toast or needed a total reformat. My Mac data was all backed-up. Now I wanted to backup Windows so I can easily get back to the relatively happy point of my Windows 7 experience (drivers loaded, dual monitors all working, etc.). I did some online searching and the recommendation was to create a "system image" of the existing Windows 7 install by attaching an external drive, formatting that to NTFS and selecting "backup to image" in Windows. I did that and also took the opportunity to "create a backup disc" on a DVD. (Windows recommended). Next I rebooted back to Mac OS and completely reformatted the problem 1TB disc to a single partition, zero all data, just to see if it would actually reformat. It all worked! So far, so good. Next I used Bootcamp to create two partitions, one for Windows. I then restarted using the Win7 Pro (64) install disc, reformatted the Bootcamp disk to NTFS (as required) and installed Windows 7. After all that is completed and all working, I next try to use the restore from image function while booted in Windows. I'm instructed to restart from the Win install disc, which I do. Here's where things get difficult. When I try to choose restore from image, at that point the installer asks which drives to I want to exclude... but does not show partitions, only full HDs. I do not want to reformat the entire 1TB drive. I only want Windows on the 120gb Bootcamp partition (which is already formatted for Windows BTW). I spent a lot of time online reading through articles with users having the same frustration.
So here (at long last) is my question: How can I either restore Windows just to a Bootcamp partition... using "Windows System Image" or if that can't be done... can I somehow import all of the settings, etc. from the "image" (image is on external HD) into a fresh Win 7 install? So far the "backup disc" also seems useless. I can't even boot to Windows from it. BTW Apple folks: the only response on the MS side was that some "expert" simply posted links on how to install Windows and restore... not helpful with my particular problem of restoring to a partition.
Any help would be appreciated! Hopefully some help that even a Mac user / new Windows user could understand would be better! Thanks!

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.
    http://www.twocanoes.com/
Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.
    http://www.paragon-software.com/downloads/demo.html
I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

Mavericks seems to have some issues with launching Final Cut, so its best to launch and then plug in any external drives - hope that helps.

  • "Resume"/"Restore windows" features

    Dear members of the community,
I have the following issue with "Resume"/"Restore Windows When Quitting and Re-opening Apps" features on my MacBook Pro (Early 2011) running Lion 10.7.3 :
The "Resume"/"Restore Windows When Quitting and Re-opening Apps" features
fail to restore windows of various applications (Safari, Preview etc.) to the corresponding Desktops
on which they were before the system reboot/shutdown or application restart.
E.g. Preview windows appear on random Desktops after the system reboot
and on the same Desktop after Preview restart (that Desktop is the one on which I quit Preview).
The same issues exist on another, Administrative, account on my computer
(that account was created during the initial system setup and never used before).
"Number of recent items" is set to max (50) for Applications, Documents, and Servers in System Preferences.
The same issue was observed with Lion 10.7.2, and (most likely), the initial Lion release.
My MacBook is the only Apple computer I have access to.
Can somebody check if his/her Lion system behaves in the same way? Please.
I do use "Resume"/"Restore Windows When Quitting and Re-opening Apps" and, actually, find them useful.
Unfortunately, their behavior I described above becomes more and more annoying...
    Thanks

I see some similar behavior as you.  I expect that's just the way it is at the moment.
