Flashing adapter led lights - not charging

Often (but not always) my charger flashes orange-green-orange-green etc, and the symbol in the toolbar tells me 'battery is not charging'. I had to replace my charger recently, but it was doing it with a spare that I was borrowing too. I hoped it was my battery, and have replaced that (needed a new one anyway) but it's doing it right now, having just put in the new battery.
It's usually when the computer is awake, but has done it a few times when it's sleeping (I don't turn my computer off much, so can't say what it does then).
Sometimes the screen dims too - the charger still glows, but the screen dims like it's operating off battery, and the symbol tells me it is. But this too is just a flicker.
Any idea? I've seen 'reset PMU' as an option, but I'm a bit worried - it says it will do something to my RAM...
I've just put in a new hard drive and new ram, with the hope that my computer will last me a long time, and really can't afford for this to be a hardware problem... It started just after getting the new hard drive.
What can i do?

Hi. First and foremost you can't do any harm by resetting the PMU. The warning in reference to 'RAM Disk' in the instructions is virtually obsolete as RAM Disks were used by older OSs before OS X. The whole tone of the PMU page is, IMHO, overly cautious in relation to OS X.
Secondly you may find that resetting the PMU doesn't actually solve your problem. You mention that your problem only started occurring after replacing the HD. That sounds to me as though there may be a dodgy connection at the DC-in board or that there is a fault on the DC-in board. If you did the HD replacement yourself I would reopen the iBook and check the connection to the Logic Board and ensure that its cable is routed as it should be. If you had the work done elsewhere return it with a description of the problem and let them sort it under warrantee. Worst case scenario is that you need a new DC-in board. They aren't that expensive and it would be worth doing considering that you have already upgraded the RAM and got a new HD & battery.
Good luck,
Adrian

  • Iphone 6 plus led light not working in 8.3

I updated to 8.3 a few days ago and have just noticed that my led light does not work.
I backed up the phone, reset it to factory settings and it's still not working. Ay ideas on what I can do next?

I have always used the iPhone's LED flashing alert to notify me when I get a call or text message. While I was on iOS 8 Beta 2-4 it was working fine. I did a clean install of the complete iOS 8 release and ever since then, the flash alert doesn't work.
Sometimes it will work on incoming calls, but will not work on text messages. I've tried soft/hard rebooting, clean wipe and fresh installs, and pretty much anything in between. Now, today I got my 128GB Gold ATT iPhone 6 Plus, and it's the same thing. Updated to iOS 8.1, reset everything/deleted all contents and settings. Both fresh install, and iCloud backups and still no alerts on text messages, but now I get them on calls. I tried my girls ATT 128GB iPhone 6 and she has the same problem too. My old phone was a 64GB iPhone 5S and hers was a 32GB iPhone 5. Everything was good until the official release of iOS 8.
I've tried searching for related issues, and haven't found anything since 2011 with a quick Google search. Most links just tell you how to turn the flash alert on but no new issues. All of my devices are on iOS 8.1.  I gave my father my 64GB 5S with a clean install and he still has the issue as well. So, that makes my iPhone 6 Plus, my girls iPhone 6 and my fathers iPhone 5S not flashing LED on messages and sometimes calls. There aren't any custom vibrations enabled on any if the devices. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is it a known bug or am I just not doing something right here? i never had an issue before the iOS 8 release. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Magsafe flashing or dim green - not charging etc. ----lower case plastic?

OK, here's a long story as short as I can make it. It will probably be confusing, as I don't have time to figure out the best organization of this info. I'm at work.
    ---SHORT VERSION---
What is the material attached to the lower case that the internals of the laptop are attached to made of? Does it serve a purpose other than holding down and stabilizing internals?
    ---REASON I'M ASKING---
I was replacing my IO/DC in board, as that is what was recommended by the Genius bar (no power with my old battery in, powered with no battery). I bought 2 other used batteries that didn't work with it either, both with supposedly over 90% health (but came shipped without much or no charge).
Anyway, last night I decided since the batteries didn't work, I would tackle the IO board. When taking it apart, I missed one of the instructions mentioning a 4mm hex head on the IO board, and broke off the bit that it screwed into of the lower case.
My question is...what is the material that the internals of the computer screw into? Is it plastic, or some sort of weak metallic material? I guess I'm asking if I could have made my problem even bigger by breaking the bit where it screws into, or if it is for "attachment" purposes only. I superglued it back on, and it stayed when I reattached the board. However, before I could get a strong green light powering up with no battery. Now it's very dim. However it will actually stay powered with a battery attached...but not charge. Sometimes it flashes, and sometimes it's dim green.
Finally (maybe), this is not a new IO board. I had to reinstall my old one, due to the fact that I'm an idiot and bought the wrong part (got an A1260 board instead of an A1211 board.) I just am worried since my symptoms have changed, that I may have created yet another problem. Now I'm waiting on another IO board, this time for A1211.
Just thought I'd see mainly if anyone knows what the material is made of.
    Thanks!

    Nevermind. Pretty sure it's plastic.
Turns out there was a loose connection. I'd double checked everything last night, but must have missed it as I was tired and hurrying. After it didn't worked I opened it back up and found a part that was loose, snapped it in, and it wasn't better.
Today I opened it up, and the other side of the same connector was loose. OOPS.
It now powers up like it did previously. It even started charging the battery for a few minutes, but then it quit. Still I'm relieved it's at least back to "normal" and hopefully when the RIGHT part comes, it'll work.

  • I am having some problem with my battery, always at 99%, led light not work

    Hi,
I just purchased my macbook 2 weeks ago. The battery was perfectly fine on the first 2 week. After fully charge, led light turn from amber to green as what it suppose to be.
But since today, when I plug in my charger to my laptop, the led light wasn't on at all but based on the battery icon shown on mylaptop, it is charging slowly.
I tried to unplug the charger and replug it in again. It turns to green ( while the icon shown 60%) and 3 sec later, the light off again.
unplug-replug again, it turns to amber, a few sec the light turns off again. and it just keep on and off.
I am a bit confused. I rang up apple helpline, they suggested me to reset the PRAM which seems work.
restart my macbook. the charger turns to amber and charging till 99% and not turning green anymore.
    is that normal?

This is a quote from the page I bookmarked for you to read. "The System Management Controller is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is on the logic board of the MacBook or MacBook Pro. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping."
The SMC used to be called the Power Managment Unit. I am surprised that apple did not have you reset this also.
If the battery fall below 96% it will start a charge cycle. Have you callibrated the battery.
It is hard to diagnose the problem till you try all the steps. Let us know how it turns out.

  • Camera and led light not working after IOS 7 update on iphone 5 help please!!

After I installed the update my led light won't work for the flashlight and my camera doesn't work either. Only the front facing camera works. Any suggestions?

thanks for the suggestions, i tried the ideas you suggested but i dont even get a camera showing for the rear camera, i also noticed the torchlight no longer works.  i did all the steps but no luck.
So I took my camera to the genius bar this weekend as well as walking through various steps with the apple guys in ohio support over the net.
With the guys at the genius bar, after i insisted that it must be software as the rear camera stopped working only after the softwre update, they continued to assure me it was hardware and talked me into letting them replace the camera,  they then took it to the back and tried fixing a camera and 30 minutes later came out and said the rear camera is no longer being detected and wanted me to replace the motherboard for yet more money.  im glad they didnt charge me for the new camera though as it still didnt work.
anyway the motherboard idea i rejected as it was just 2 months out of warranty and had only stopped working the day after the release of 7.0.2, so im going to wait until the next few releases to see what happens, as i dont believe for a second its hardware.  i expected a stock answer from apple and its exactly what i got even after my explanation of how it was working the day before the release.  not overly impressed with the whole process.
i wanted to back down to 7.0.1 to confirm the camera still works but they said no chance so i cant even see if it still works ouside 7.0.2.  anyway will update if i get any further progress.

  • Sony Xperia M2 flashing Red LED light and wont turn on.

Okay so i have been having this problem for about a week.I tried turning on my phone the other day but it wasnt doing that so i thought maybe it ran out of battery then i let i charge for a couple of hours and left it untouched. When i came back my phone was flashing a red light and the sony logo would apear and my phone would vibrate but then it would shut down again. This has been happening for all week i let it charge overnight but still the same thing happens flashing red and vibrating.Sometimes the light dosent flash and i can turn my phone on for a while but i never know when it could randomly shut down.i tried using the Pc companion program to try and fix it but my phone wont stay on for long enough for it to be able to do that.Any tips on what i could do ? the last thing i wanna do right now is call sony so please if you know any possible way of fixing this let me know

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
Have you tried to power on the phone without SIM- and/or SD-card to see if this can help? Otherwise, a software repair via PC Companion would be recommeded:
    http://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/pc-companion/
In PC Companion you press start on Support Zone > Start on Update the phone/tablet software > Repair phone/tablet (the blue clickable link in the message) > Follow these steps without having your device connected to the PC.
Follow the instruction that appears in the program and do not connect your device until this guide tells you how to connect it. When you are going to connect the phone, the phone should be completely off. Hold the ON/OFF button + volume up(+) for 10 seconds.

  • Front 'notification' LED light not working...

anyone else having this problem?  since the 2.2 update my blue LED lights on front of the phone stopped working (it lights up when u have a call)  i liked having the visual notification when a call was coming in....i get the blinking green light...but not blue or red (charged phone)....anyone?

i tried a starting the phone on safe mode (to see if it was an app that was causing the problem), then factory reset and pulled the battery,. ETC, ETC (I HATE THE FACTORY RESET SOLUTION, ITS ANNOYING!!) ..
FURTHERMORE, recieved a replacement unit (shutter problems) it was preloaded with 2.1...everything worked fine...i proceeded to update to 2.2, the light went out.  I spoke with a tech support guy from verizon...he told me it is a know problem and that not everyone is expericing this. similar to what people are experiencing with their mp3s...some have the problems others dont.  im glad that this is the only issue so far...but ido want all the bells and whistles on my phone...and i want them to work!!  not asking for much...i want what i paid for...little blue light and all...

  • Mag Safe Power Adapter - Red light on charger

    Hello,
I have had my MacBook for about a week now. I love it! However, when I plug the charger into the wall, and the other end into my computer, the end where I plug it into my computer (with the little LED light on it), is showing orange/red on the LED light. It is green for a few seconds when I plug it in, and it was green since I've used the MacBook, but now it is red/orange. I am just wondering if this is a big problem I should be worrying about, or if everything is okay. The charging status on toolbar shows the lightning (charging) symbol, and I am watching my battery percentage go up, I am just concerned obviously. I love my MacBook, and want to make sure there is nothing wrong with it. Please get back to me with any info ASAP. Thanks.
    John Kasprzak

    That is perfectly normal.
The green light indicator on the magsafe adaptor indicates that the power is going to the computer, and not the battery (i.e: when no battery is installed, or when the battery is fully charged).
The amber light indicates that the power is going to the battery as well, meaning that the computer is being powered by the adaptor while the battery charges at the same time. The amber light also shows when the Macbook is off and the battery is charging.
    So, in summary:
    Amber=battery charging.
    Green=battery not charging.

  • Macbook charger-brand new, no light, not charging?

    Hello everyone,
Recently I was having problems with my MacBook charger not working. It was almost 4 years old, so I figured it was time to order a new one anyways. So I ordered a new one and received it today, and the charger is still not lighting up. The laptop is also not charging, however it does recognize it because it says "Not charging" where the battery would usually be indicated. Does anyone have any idea on what would be causing this? I'm thinking it might be the battery, but not 100% sure. Here is what my laptop is showing:

  • Endless Switching between Adapter and Battery/Not Charging

My battery is from fall of 2007 (I received it during the recall.)
The little battery icon on the top of the screen is endlessly flickering between the charging symbol and an almost dead battery symbol. If I open energy saver, it tells me that the computer is switching back and forth between the two power sources: my Power Adapter, and my battery, with my battery perpetually stuck at 1%. This seems to me to be more than just the battery not charging, but since my computer is indeed running off of the adapter, I wanted to see if perhaps this was just its way of telling me the battery is no longer charging. Also, any advice on getting the battery to hold something, at least for a little longer (my new job gives me a computer in August, so I'm just trying to stretch this one as much as possible.)
    Thanks in advance!

    BUMP -
I'm having a similar problem. Will keep scanning the older posts on this board, but:
I just replaced a lost MacAlly G4 Adapter with a new one (MacAlly). It charges the Powerbook when I leave the computer shut-down (so I'm not screwed ...), but when powered-up with the adapter plugged into the G4, the battery symbol alternates between the charging symbol & the battery status symbol - and slowly drains. The screen also dims & brightens.
