Flashing after adding transitions

Has anyone experienced flashing after adding transitions especially using cross fades. It does not matter what length the effect is. It is frustrating and unacceptable. I have not received one answer in the past. Ever since I added ILife 06 this is is started. Maybe I should get rid of the Ilife update?

I have had the same thing happen. I dont know why but I have solved it two ways - save, quit and reopen. If that doesnt work delete the transition and replace it.

  • Pictures "snap" after adding transitions

I'm very frustrated with IDVD. In every movie I make there are a few pictures that, after adding the transition they "flash", it happens usually at the begining of the movie, but not necessarily. It is a random flaw and it comes with a sound that is similar to the sound we hear when the monitor goes to sleep.
I've tried deleting, clearing the transition and the picture, but whatever stays in its place acquires the same defect. I don't know what else to do, I've tried everything. If someone knows what I should do, please write back, I have loads of clips to make, but I won't until I know how to fix this.
I've read similar complaints but with video after adding transitions, but mine only happens with pictures.
    thank you,
    Paula

    Hello, Paula,
I noticed that you posted to the iDVD discussions, but your problem sounds as if it occurs with your iMovie, not iDVD.
Having a 'flash' with certain transitions has been noted in iMovie postings before. I have had that happen on occasion. The solution for many of us has been to delete the offending transition, and then play the end of the clip preceding the removed transition. You have to play it frame-by-frame, and you may see one frame of all white. Delete this one frame, redo the transition and you should be ok.
If the video is ok, but there is still a pop/snap/buzz noise, that is also a known problem and has occurred since iMovie 4. This 'popping' noise usually occurs between a silent photo and a video clip. There is no good solution yet, but if you zoom out the timeline until you see the cross-shape of the transition, you can select 'Show volume levels' and manually adjust the volume of the transition. Sometimes I have just lowered and then raised back the volume level bar and the noise has markedly reduced.
Hope this is helpful to you!

  • Using photos and after adding transitions the clip length changes

I am making a movie on imovie 11 and as I am adding transitions and music each time I add or change the clip duration changes.  I have it set at a particular time but it changes regardless.  I keep having to change durations of transitions and photo clips in order to bring it back.

    Try this...
    Click EDIT/TRANSITION OVERLAP
FULL will borrow frames from the photos to make the transition. The project gets shorter.
HALF will add frames to the transition so that the project stays the same overall length.

  • BLACK BLIP on jpegs in timeline after adding transitions

Two months ago I updated to Ilife 06'........Since that time, after editing some footage when creating a JPEG slide show, I am getting this "BLACK BLIP (about 8 to 15 frames) on every other picture after applying transitions. If I totally delete 1 or 2 pictures prior to the picture with the black blip and reimport each of them, I can then import only -1- transitions at a time, watch it render then import a second transition etc.
ILife 05' allowed me to import multiple transitions and I never had this with 04' or 03'.
Any suggestions for a fix to this problem

  • BLACK BLIP (8 to 12 frames) appears after adding transitions to timeline

After updating to ILife06' every JPEG imported pic to the timeline has a Black Blip for 8-12 frames. Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop this from occurring? Thanks
    Wayne

iMovie 6 can experience problems caused by third-party software it inherited from iMovie 5. Here's a list of things to rule out first:

If that doesn't fix it, please say more about the problem. When you import a JPEG there's 8-12 frames of black added to THAT clip? (Very strange, by the way.)
    All JPEGs? All sizes?
Say more about the source and dimensions of the JPEGs. Anything unusual about them? What model camera?
Is the project saved on an external drive?

  • Background disappears after adding a cross dissolve to a keyed clip.

I have a clip that has a Keying filter (as well as being cropped and scaled down) on it over a white background. After adding a Cross Dissolve to the keyed clip, the white background disappears for the duration of the Cross Dissolve, leaving a black background behind the keyed clip. This black background is present both in preview and after rendering.
    Any advice?

not positive this will help, but try this:
    remove the transition
right-click and sselect "make compound clip" (or Option G)
within the compound clip, drop a white solid under the keyed clip; do not place any transitions at either end of the compound clip.
return to your storyline / sequence
place your transition again and see if it's fixed
if you still do not have a clean dissolve, remove the transition and then click once on the compound clip and go to around 8 or 12 frames before the end and in the inspector, go to the opacity and add a keyframe and then arrow right to the frame before the last frame and add another keyframe and drag the opacity value to zero.

  • Adding transitions creates audio noise

Adding transitions creates a slight "pop" noise at the beginning and end of the transitions. Any solutions for avoiding or correcting this problem?

You might want to try using something like a Fade Out or Fade In instead of one of the transitions that add or subtract to the length of the video
    [Quoted from iMovie Help]
Some transitions (for example, Cross Dissolve and Push) shorten your movie by a few seconds, depending on the speed of the transition. For example, if you add a transition with a speed of 2 seconds, iMovie overlaps 2 seconds from the first clip and 2 seconds from the second clip as it renders the transition. This shortens your movie by a total of 2 seconds.
The Overlap transition freezes the last frame of the clip on its left and superimposes it over the next clip. Fade In/Fade Out blackens the last frames of the clip on the left and the first frames of the following clip.
    [End quote]
I think the best way is to extract the audio right after you import and before any transitions are added.

  • Working with AVI: Adding transitions

I have a dozen AVIs from my Canon camera that I would like to edit together in FCE. I can import and view them fine on the timeline. But the program will not allow me to add transitions in between the individual clips. However, I can add transitions within the same clip. It just does not work when I want to put transitions between separate clips.
I have tried converting these clips to DV, MPEGS, QUICKTIMES before importing and it does not resolve the problem.
    Any suggestions?
    M

To add transitions between clips they must have "handles", that is, additional hidden media after the first clip end point and before the second clip start point. To do that you must move the IN and OUT points of each clip before adding transitions.
I suggest you to convert your clips to .mov (with DV-PAL or DV-NTSC codec, and audio stereo uncompressed PCM 48 kHz) before importing to FCE. You can use MPEG Streamclip (free) to do that. This doesn't add handles... but it avoids preliminary FCE rendering.

  • Video shaking after adding few elements

    Software : Premiere Elements 11
    OS : W7
    Hello,
I'm preparing tutorial for a software. I made a video capture of my software with Jing and I got a .swf (I used Jing to the video capture after testing many solutions because this is the only one without bugs and big advertissments).
So I add my .swf without problem on my timeline, but after adding few elements (voice, pictures, ..) everything begin to shake and to flash. I tried to make it new again, but each time after few elemnts added, averything's shaking.
I used the "rendering" (I'm not sure how to call that in english, in french it is "rendu") but it isn't chaging anything.
If you have any idea,s it is very welcome !

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunatly, I have no choice because there is no other possibilities of extension and I spent already days by tring other softwares.
The point is : it is working well till there is "too much" others elements. For exemple if I just add voice and 1 or 2 gif, it is ok. But if I had more things, it is shaking and flashing ... so I don't think it is from the .swf. Maybe you know a good freeware to record video on an other extension, witout bugs (all I tried are with big adverstissment or with strange bugs like everything pink and deformed ... ?).

  • Noise after adding visual effects or tranisition

    Hi there!
I recently edited a movie with iMovie. After adding some effects or transitions I noticed a strange noise (some kind of crackling).
    Here are my questions:
How can I restore the original clips? I saved and closed that project before I noticed that crackling.
How can I avoid that noise when adding effects or transitions?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hello,
After adding some effects or transitions I noticed a strange noise (some kind of crackling). How can I avoid that noise when adding effects or transitions?
Unfotunately, that is a known problem with iMovie sometimes. See this:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107945
How can I restore the original clips?
Remove any transitions on either side of the clip you wish to restore. Click on the clip. Under 'Advanced' you should see the option to 'restore original clip.' Just select that and the entire clip from which that part came will replace it.

  • Lock Durations After Added?

Ok, I am a new Mac owner, and I must say that I love it. I previously had terrible fits with Windows Movie Maker. Crashes, transitions not working, freezing up, etc. IMovie is 100% better then WMM, but I am still running into a major problem. I am working on a rather big project, around 57 minutes long on WMM. The problem is on IMovie, I can't for the life of me get the durations to lock. I have the transition set to a 2sec duration automatically, those work fine. I have troubleshooted this problem for nearly 3 days now with no luck. When I add a picture, or a scrolling credit or something like that, it either adds sec. to previously added titles or clips, or subtracts them. Sometimes it will do this to some of my very first additions to the project which is now only 6 min long, but it is going to prove to be menacing as the project becomes longer. I hope there is just something I am missing that's right in front of my face. I really like IMovie, so if there is anyone who can help a Mac Noob it would be much appreciated.

When you add a transition, it takes half the length of the transition from the clip or still in front of the transition, and half the length of the transition from the clip or still after the transition. This means that a transition can be no longer than half the length of the shortest clip or still around it. For more details on how this works...
NTSC = 30 frames per second
PAL = 25 frames per second
I ran an experiment on NTSC, and here is how it works. First with stills, then with video clips.
First do the math in Frame mode.
    NTSC clip 3:00>transition 1:00 >clip 3:00
    convert to frames
    clip 90 frames > transition 30 frames > clip 90 frames
This implies that originally you had stills that were 3:15 (=105 frAMES) long with no transitions.
Two clips each 105 frames long. Put a transition between of 30 frames. Divide by two to get 15 frames subtracted from each side. Now you have 3:00 (=90 frames), transition of 30 frames, next still of 90 frames. Total frames still equals 210.
Now change transition to 1:15 (=45 frames). Divide by 2 and round down = 22 frames subtracted from each side. Now you have still of 105-23 = 82 frames, transition of 44 frames, still of 82 frames. The overall total is still 210.
Now let's look at a different case. Delete the transition, and set the length of the photos with no transitions to 3:15 (105 frames).
Now, go into File/Project Properties/Timing, and put a check next to Photo Duration:Applies to all photos.
Now, the photos will stay the same even when you add transitions, but the project gets longer.
    Original still of 105, still of 105 = 210
    Insert transition of 30 frames
Now we have still of 105, transition of 30, still of 105, and the total = 240. The project got longer by 30 frames, but the photos kept their original length.
For Video, start with 2 clips of 4 seconds each (= 120 frames each)
Add 1 second transition. Clips are now 105 frames then 30 frame transistion. Total frames still 240.
Change transition to 45 frames. Clips are now 98 frames plus 44 second transition. Total frames still 240.
In iMovie 08 (version 7) you could select whether transitions for video would make the movie longer or would keep the same length. It was confusing, and when you make the movie longer, you pick up video frames that you had previously edited out, so the results were randomly bad. So I think in iMovie 09 (version 8), they decided that transitions for video would keep the total project length the same.
    Another point...
50+ minutes is a very long movie for iMovie. If it is photos only it might work, but if it includes a lot of high-def video, it probably will not work. iMovie 09 has some great ease of use features and lets you see your edits in real time, but this becomes a constraint as the movie gets longer and virtual memory fills up. You may want to split your movie into shorter movies, or you may want to try Final Cut Express, which is fine for long movies (but harder to learn) because it has a more traditional architecture.

  • Adding transitions reduce clip size

After I edit clips in the event library, I add them to a new project. Next, I add transitions between each clip. I've noticed that the timing of the clip is reduced when a transition is added. How can I retain the size of the clip or add transitions that don't cut clips I've edited to the exact size I want?
    Thanks, John

Transitions in iMovie have always shortened each clip by half the duration of the transition.
In earlier versions - up to and including iM HD 6 - the two transitions ..hmm; I've forgotten their names now, but they involved a freeze-frame ..ah; one of them was called "Overlap" ..maybe it was just that one ..anyway, "Overlap" did NOT "eat into" the clips it was attached to.
The way to work round this is to decide in advance what duration of transition you want to apply ..let's say one second ..and then make the clips either side of it half that duration longer ..e.g; each half a second longer than necessary. Those two extra half-seconds will then be "eaten away" by the transition.
In versions up to and including iMHD6 the total length of the edited movie would be eaten away by the combined duration of all transitions applied ..I haven't tested to see if this is true in iM'09.
Applying transitions after adding synchronised music to clips is therefore a "no-no", as the music will goes out of sync when transitions have been applied.

  • After adding folders to iTunes library, now have duplicates of each song

I store all my music on a separate drive, M:\
I have a specific file structure setup that has worked for me for years, M:\Artist\Album
I recently received an iPod for my birthday, and started using iTunes. After adding my music drive (M:\) for inclusion into the library (without "keep..." and "copy..." selected, as to keep my current file structure intact), when selecting "File->Display Duplicates" just about every song in the library has a duplicate, one in the original folder "M:\Artist\Album", and another in "M:\Playlists\..\Artist\Album". I understand that basically somehow iTunes glitched and started in the "M:\Playlist" directory when adding to the library at some point, however I am at a loss as to how. In my actual folders I only have 1 copy of each song, so basically iTunes is making a symbolic link to each song and adding it into the library as a separate song.
I have over 9000 (must...resist...meme...) songs in my library, and removing and restoring takes quite a while. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to do this at least once now, but any ideas as to why or advice on how to avoid this particular problem in the future?
I am pretty set in my ways of my current file structure, since I don't use iTunes as my primary media software, so I would prefer to not have to resort to succumbing to just letting iTunes handle everything the way it wants (I pretty much hate that).
Thank you for any suggestions you may have.
EDIT: Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?
    Message was edited by: kaziekama

If you have "Keep..." and "Copy..." unchecked, iTunes will simply reference the existing file, and will not change your file structure, as you correctly note.
I'm fairly sure that some other program is operating on your files. The "Playlists" folder that you mention has nothing to do with iTunes. On my PC, only Windows Media and Roxio use it.
To your question +"Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?"+ the answer is no. When iTunes rips a CD, it names the files as track number and title, with no option to do differently. And as far as placing the ripped files, they go in Artist/Album, with no option to do differently. As full-featured ripping programs go, iTunes is not even in the race.
