Flashing BIOS without floppy?

Recently, I've flashed my 875P BIOS from 1.7 to 1.8 & am unhappy with the performance from the new BIOS. I would like to reflash it back to 1.7, but my floppy drive is no longer working properly & will not read data correctly from floppy disks. Is there a safe way to flash BIOS without using a floppy disk, such as through Windows? I've looked at LiveUpdate 3, but it only shows the current BIOS 1.8 that I can update from. Replies are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks for the quick reply, DOS. I've figured out another way by putting the three files from LiveUpdate(MSISetup, AMIFlh, IftwInst.Tag) & 1.7 BIOS file together in a folder & flashed in Windows from there by clicking on MSISetup. The three files mentioned are always included during the LiveUpdate download along with a BIOS file for whatever version. Just make sure to remove the BIOS file you don't want & put in the one you do want along with the three files mentioned. Honestly, I held my breath during the flash process, but I'm glad it went okay without a hitch. So, for those who feel comfortable flashing in Windows(or DOS, since you have a choice during the flash process) to whatever BIOS version, this is an easy way of doing it. I don't know if this is good enough for a sticky since I know others are looking for ways of flashing there BIOS. Good luck!  :D

  • How can i flash bios without floppy drive

i need help with flashing bios without a floppy because although the floppy is in windows and the bios every time i try to use it, it says to insert a disc i have seek floopy enabled and it post as if it is ok the drive works i have tried 2 drives 2 cables and turned the cables round tried all i can i think lol ....
    thanks guys

it can also be done using a CD-rom. I flashed my BIOS twice using cd-rom. Use Nero or any cd-writing program to write the bios files you download to a CD. Afterwards, just use the Windows 98 installation cd to boot into DOS, then take out the Windows 98 CD and put in the CD with the BIOS files on it and run the program just like from a floppy.

  • Flashing BIOS without Floppy drive

I have a Pavilion zt1185 running windows xp pro which doesn't have a floppy drive.  I'm am trying to flash the bios is there a way this could be done without getting a floppy drive. I have tried using the usb but will not lookup usb on startup.

    Hi:
As far as I know, regarding a notebook of that vintage you will need a floppy drive to update the BIOS.
More than likely a USB floppy drive will work.

My K8N Neo2 Platinum is still dead as a doornail but at least I found this.

I was able to make a bootable CD-ROM containing the latest BIOS and flash it without using those pesky floppy drives/disks. Whole process took like 5 mins. I don't know who Bart is but hats off to him in a huge way!
    Hope this helps someone!

No, im serious. I have 4 computers here and a ton of floppys, my camera uses floppies so im using them alot "when they work" but these damn things are terrible.
I can have one disk work on all 4 pc's, bring it to another place not work at all,  have another not work on all my computers but work somewhere else. All different brands of floppies all different brand of Floppy drives. I have a better chance winning the lottery then getting this floppys to work right. LOL

  • Updating BIOS without floppy drive?

Hi I wish to update my BIOS so I can use my new dual core cpu but it seems incredibly complicated.
Like the title says, I don't have a floppy drive. However I've heard some say this doesn't matter and I can install the new BIOS from the hard drive.
My motherboard: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    The Bios (top one): http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=587
Does anyone know what I can do?

I gave up and tried inserting my old athlon 64 3500 in and it now works, although sometimes the screen gives no signal so I reset.
However now my ethernet controller is not working so I can't access the net through my router. I've installed the NVIDIA nForce3 System Drivers from http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=587
as well as getting the Realtek Gigabit Ethernet Drivers off there and installing a 'LAN utility' off it. Couldn't execute anything else with it.
But no luck. My pc recognises the LAN as connected but I can't access my router nor the net. In System it shows my ethernet driver as a question mark.
At the moment I just want to get back online.
p.s.: I was flashing so I get my dual core to work. My bios at the time (never been updated) only saw it as single core.
EDIT: In system I've tried updating the ethernet driver that way but no luck.

Try with just one memory stick, also provide details about memory sticks used.
You can try to setup memory voltage in BIOS to 2.7V && re-test.
Also try with another PSU as suggested.

  • Flashing BIOS Without Windows

This really should have been covered on the main download page for the BIOS update. I'm trying to update my BIOS on a Yoga 2 Pro but alas Lenovo has made BIOS updates OS dependant. Here I am used to just going to the BIOS putting the .img file on a usb stick and select flash. That would be too easy and I'm sure confused alot of Windows users. The problem I am having first of all is I cannot find a changelog file. Why would I want to flash something that I have no idea what it does? I need to know what I'm flashing first. The second problem is I cannot even extract the downloaded .exe file, its not a .cab, .zip or .rar. If I could extract it, all I should need to do is make a bootable usb with the .img file right? Anyone in Lenovo support whatching this thread?

  • Flashing BIOS without a compatible CPU

    Hi there,
I have no idea where to find an answer for this as I've seen all sorts of conflicting information out there. I want to know, if I get an H81M-P33 motherboard and a g3258, will I need to use a compatible older-gen CPU to update the BIOS and make the board compatible with the g3258, or can I use MFlash or the forum BIOS flashing utility to update the BIOS from a USB with no compatible CPU installed? Also, as a side note, I noticed in another thread someone was saying that Intel released firmware in August that would make it difficult or impossible to overclock the G3258 on non-Z series motherboards. I did also see that Tom's Hardware article where they successfully used the H81M-P33 to overclock it back in July when it was released. Am I running a large risk of it not working even after I update to the latest BIOS, or is it still possible?
Thanks for your help, I really hope I've posted in the right place.

Okay, thank you very much! Most of the threads I found when searching were from really long ago on all these different sites, so I wasn't sure if something had changed. I appreciate your quick response and I'll look into it further before I make a purchase.

  • Flashing C365 BIOS Without Windows on HD

Hello, just bought me a new C365. Didn't want this WinBingThing. First thing I did was make a backup of the HD with dd. Then wiped away everything to install Debian Jessie. Everything is fine, it works.
But now I'm concerned about how to update the bios. I really don't want to put the image back to HD just for flashing the bios.
Someone found a way, but it would involve using third party software:
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Flashing-BIOS-Without-Windows/m-p/1700535
I found a new bios for my system:
    http://support.lenovo.com/de/de/products/desktops-and-all-in-ones/lenovo-c-series-all-in-ones/lenovo...
I found an image of an ISO for to flash another system. Of course I woudn't take the BIOS-Image from that ISO:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en/downloads/ds009477
So my question: Is that ISO-Image suitable to flash my BIOS, if I add the BIOS to the given  ISO?
Other questions: Why can't I find any BIOS-changelogs on the C365-BIOS page? Would it be possible to provide BIOS-Flash-ISO-Images for C365?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Flashing K8N Neo4F (7125) BIOS from Floppy

About a month ago I flashed my BIOS to the 1.75Mod.  Since then I have had innumerable, inexplicable, and generally infuriating problems with my computer.  It locks up, Windows won't load or will take 15+minutes to load, and my Hard Drive keeps getting data corruption.  I have erased my hard drive and reinstalled windows more than 5 times.
I'm hoping the problem is the BIOS.  It is the only variable that I haven't addressed yet, because whenever I have tried to flash back to my old BIOS through Winflash, I get a strange error about the BIOS being the wrong size for my BIOS mainboard.  The MSI techs I have spoken with have told me that, most likely, the Mod is registeing incorrectly with WInflash and, therefore, I must flash through a Floppy drive.
Now I have a floppy drive on the way from Newegg and I am wondering if someone could point me to a comprehensive guide for performing this procedure.  Flashing with Winflash was easy but the floppy flash seems a bit more complicated.  Since I don't have much money, I would like to get it right the first time.

I did not realize it was a problem to post the same question in two different forums.  I posted in the BIOS forum, as it pertains to BIOS, and in this forum, because this is the forum for my Mobo.  I have found that I get different answers from different people in the different forums I have posted in on this site.  It seemed logical to me to ask in both places.  I certainly didn't mean to be 'spamming'.
However, I appreciate the links you gave me in the other post, Blazing Storm.  Any other suggestions would be appreciated, whichever post you answer in ; ).

  • BIOS Update for Tecra 8000 without Floppy Disk

I searched in this forum for a solution to update the BIOS without a floppy drive. The only one i found was this thread [http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=66966&tstart=0] , but there is no .iso file for the tecra 8000 series.
is there any solution to get the new bios installed on my tecra 8000 without any floppy drive ?

I have checked Toshiba BIOS download page on http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_bios.jsp and TRAD BIOS version is offered. This old Tecra is maybe 10 years old and at this time Toshiba has offered traditional BIOS update only.
Win versions are offered later with newer Tecra 9000/9100.
    Sorry.
Maybe stupid question now but why do you need BIOS update?

  • Help: flashing BIOS

Hello to u all again! :-)
I've finally understand that my 875P Neo need a BIos upgrade. In fact, from the Bios Release History from MSI seems that older versions of 875P's Bios were afflicted by errors in monitoring temperature sensors.
This seems to be a problem not only for me, but also for many others 875P Neo's owners.
    The problem, now:
I've got an ATA133 Hard disk, connected to the ATA133 connector. I realized that ATA133 is competence of the RAID/S-ATA controller on board, and that's the problem.
In order to assure a secure flash operation, I should start from a boot floppy disk, and then look on the Hard Disk to find the flash utility and the bios file.
MSI recommends not to flash directly from floppy, and that's the main prob.
    Here I sum up the problems related with the bios upgrade;
    - I cannot create a boot disk, using Windows 2000 Professional (NTFS). ;(
    - I used another boot disk (I presume it was made with Win98SE), but then I cannot see my hard disk, I don't know why, maybe because it is a NTFS partition, but most probably because without any RAID driver, the boot disk cannot see the presence of the HD. 8o
How should I flash in security my bios? Please help me!  :D
    Thanks a lot boyz!
    Matteo

First of all, thanks for your attention.
    Quote
No you cannot see NTFS from DOS.  Either way that is not relevant since even if it was FAT you would likely not see the drive on the IDE3 as it requires promise drivers to even see the volume regardless of the volume\'s file table format.

Another option, if you have Nero Burning ROM is to make a bootable Cd-ROM with the BIOS files on it.  When it asks for boot files, use your boot floppy in A:\\ drive to allow Nero to make the disk bootable.  then you can add files to the boot CD-ROM too!
Yes, this is another very easy solution too!
But, in order to do this dangerous operation in safety, i'd like to take a backup of the current (1.20) version of my Bios.
If I use a cd i can't backup bios current version. Or not?!?
    Quote
I use a boot CD-ROM and a CF flash card (USB Legacy must be set to ALL DEVICES in the BIOS) that has ALL bios versions on it, so I can choose what version I want when I want.
That's a very nice solution... But can you access to the Compactflash reader with the only Boot Cd?
I think that I'll use the method described in the MSI page about non FAT systems, using a boot disk and ramdrive.
Seems to be the safest solution.
    Thanks again!

    the symptoms of my problem:
    - windows display a "bizarre" bios information (advanced display property ) with XXXX instead real number

    - and some resolution like 1680x1050 (for 22'' monitor) don't display correctly (hasardousat reboot)
    - also, during video playing (whatever codec and player), there were any dead pixel always at the same place
so i decided to flashing the bios cause Windows didn't managed to identify it !
now, i just tried to flash the bios with the 6.10 release here :
