Flashing Folder at bootup after OSX Install

hey everyone i have a problem that me bieng a beginner mac person i just cant solve, i have a PowerBook G3 300mhz 192MG RAM 8 GB HD that came with 8.6 performed a clean install of OS X 10.1.3 few days ago everything whent perfectly until the next day when i turned it on it just whent to the gray screen with a flashing folder with a question mark, i tried all the normal cures resetting the PRAM and ect.. but no go , thinking this was maybe a bug i performed a clean install of 10.1.3 again and updated it to the latest with the software update last night. I got up this morning to find the very same problem again. i have no clue what to do from here any suggestions?

That was a good test on your part and am glad you had the MacOS 8.6 CD with which to test.
I can only answer your question in this way...OSX can be a problem on the Wallstreet in the way I spoke of earlier, nor does it appear that you have a hardware problem (except the dead backup battery) since Classic seems to run fine. I don't know if Apple made any changes to later versions of OSX which might mitigate this issue but 10.1.x was still an early release.
I also have a Wallstreet running 10.4.4 (via XPostFacto) and 9.2.2 and it seems to run just fine. However, I just tried booting into Open Firmware and booting to my OSX 10.1 CD...I was unsuccessful with both although I have been successful in the past. I did not pursue this by resetting PRAM and power manager but I will in the future. Also, when installing Jaguar 10.2 from CD, I was never ever to reboot to the just-installed 10.2 on the HD...it always started back up to the CD. My only solution was to pop open the CD tray after shutting down or during restart. So the Wallstreet is the least supported powerbook and this is partly or mostly due to Apple not wanting to optimize OSX on this "Old World ROM" machine. The following powerbook called the Lombard introduced New World ROM (ROM-in-RAM) where a lot of the hard code in the ROM chip was moved to software which loads at startup in a file called MacOS ROM and found in the System Folder.
You may wish to do this:
- Reformat your HD as one volume booting to your MacOS 8.6 CD and using the Drive Setup utility; by default, the MacOS 8.6 HD Driver is installed. Now install OS 8.6 (just the basic System Folder if you are not going to run any Classic apps) and then test performance.
- Download and replace your OS 8.6 Startup Disk control panel with the Startup Disk control panel from OS 9.2.1:

Just go to your System Folder > Control Panels and drag the old Startup Disk c.p. to the Trash, then drag the new one into the Control Panels folder, close all windows and restart. It should work just fine with OS 8.6 although Apple is discussing using 9.x and OSX.
- Now install your OSX on the same volume and test.
By having both OS 8.6 and 10.1.5 on the same volume, you maximize your HD space for OSX; if the Wallstreet will only cold-start to OS 8.6, you should be able to select 10.1.5 in the Startup Disk control panel and restart to OSX...this should make life easier.
If you wish, you can format with OSX's Disk Utility instead of 8.6's Drive Setup...they both will do the same job. However, I do not recall if the 10.1 CD has the option of installing the MacOS HD Driver when reformatting; if not, use Drive Setup.
Having both Classic and OSX on the same volume (no partition) is perfectly acceptable; installing OSX first, then Classic, or vice versa is perfectly acceptable. But I would do 8.6 first, install the new control panel, then install OSX.
You could also partition with the first 7GB for OSX and the remainder for OS 8.6; this would allow you to always have a bootable partition in the event OSX went down. You can install a basic 8.6 System Folder (no apps) using approx. 150MB.

Knock on wood, this seems to have been my problem as well. I stumbled on this thread after dealing with this ridiculously-long boot times for the past several weeks.
I just reinstalled McAfee Antivirus and my Macbook Air booted up in less than 1 minute. No more hanging on the boot-up progress bar. No more hanging after I click on my user's avatar on the log-in screen. Bootup would often take 5+ minutes and sometimes never complete.
This has been SUPREMELY frustrating.

Hi, You can read this Revised Troubleshooting Guide to make sure you have followed the correct procedures. Be sure to read it all, since it is not written to follow as Step1, etc. Some information that you may need could be listed over half way down.

Make sure you are the Administrator and use that Account. Also be aware that your Anti-Virus may block the Install.
After you read that and then Uninstall, then I would suggest using the Manual Installer(s) which are listed in the Guide.

Flash Player not working after CS3 install

I just bought a new iMac and Adobe CS3 web premium software yesterday. I installed on the new iMac, then installed the software on my 1.5 year old MacBook Pro. On the laptop everything seems to be working fine, except the Flash player won't work when browsing on Safari or Firefox. I tried numerous downloads and installs in every way possible, but still not working. Is this because the MacBook Pro is running 10.4.11 and the Flash Player may have been built for 10.5? Please advise how to get Flash working in the browsers again. Thanks!

External Drives Won't Display after OSX Install

The HD died on my mini so bought a new one and installed OSX 10.4. The old HD still seems to work for data as I can see it and copy data using Macdrive on my PC. Also, formatted an old USB Maxtor HD (HFS+) using Macdrive and copied over all the data from the old drive. Now, when I connect either to my mini, neither will show up on the desktop (yes, preferences are set to show all drives on the desktop). Disk Utility sees the old HD but not the Maxtor. Since all my data is on either of those drives, how do I get at least one of them to show up? Thanks.

Repairing Permission only deals with installer receipts and system components. Not with mounting or accessing hard drives.
Have your run Apple DU First Aid? Disk Warrior? Only use latest version for your OS.
Are you trying to clone your system to external and then repairing permissions? trying to boot from them?
If cloning, make sure the "Ignore Ownership" flag is unchecked before cloning (but do repair permissions on external drives you intend to boot from, such as a Firewire drive).
What type of cases and interface are these?

Cannot install Leopard! after getting flashing folder icon @ boot-up

Hi, I have a retail version of leopard but not having any luck installing it.
While installing I choose to erase and install option, when it started to install it comes up with a error "The source media you are installing from is damaged. Try istalling from a different copy of the source media or contact the manufacturer for a replacment".
Now when I boot up to try it again, it comes up with a flashing folder error, with ? mark in it.
I have resetted the pram and restored drive but no luck. Any help?

How long into the install process (after you clicked install and it started installing) until you received the error?
* If it had already formatted the hard drive, then the reason you're not able to boot is because all of your previous operating system and data were erased already and you're s@#t up a creek and will have to contact Apple, tell them the steps you took, and request a new Leopard disk.
* If it simply checked the Leopard DVD and it hadn't formatted the drive or started installing, then booting off your original OSX disk (or the disk of the previous operating system you had on there) and going to "Disk Utility > First Aid > verify Disk" will tell you what the issue is. If it has errors, then try using "Repair Disk". If it fails, you're s@#t up a creek and will have to contact Apple, tell them the steps you took, and request a new Leopard disk.

Flashing Question Mark Folder after Clean Install in Target Disk Mode

I have an old iBook G4 with a failing optical drive and the need to reformat the hard drive and re-install OS 10.5.4. Since the optical drive is failing and unpredictable, I figured I'd do everything in target disk mode.
So I mounted the hard drive of the iBook to my Mac Pro via Firewire in target disk mode. I was able to successfully format the hard drive of the iBook, zeroing out all the data with 7 passes, and I was also able to successfully install OS 10.5.4 from my original Install DVD, again in target disk mode.
After the install was complete, I went through all the registration process and User Account setup and the iBook booted fine albeit still in target disk mode. So I shut down the Mac Pro, turned off the iBook and unplugged the Firewire cable. My Mac Pro booted up just fine afterward. But the iBook now gives me the flashing question mark/finder folder.
I know this means that the iBook is having trouble located a startup volume, or that the startup volume is corrupt or missing data. How can this be, though, after a reformat and clean install? Did I do something wrong in target disk mode? Or did I neglect to do something necessary?

I don't see APM as an option in Disk Utility when booting from my Mac Pro. I only have Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled), Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive), MS-DOS (FAT) and ExFAT.

On your friend's computer with an internet connection, log into the Mac App Store with your ID and download Yosemite from the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. The make a bootable USB install media using

The downloads are probably .dmg files (disk images). You would open the disk image (double-click it) to find the application or an installer. If it's the application itself, you then drag the application to your Applications folder to "install" it. If it's an installer, double-click the installer to run the installer that installs the application.
NOTE: If you iMac is Intel, it's not a PPC G5.

So I came to this problem a while ago. M ycomputer basically froze so I was forced to shut down by holding the button down. When I started it up I got the flashing folder with a question mark. I started it up holding down the command and r keys which brought me to disk utility. Although my computer doesn't read that I have a hard drive to start it up. When I click on the disk utility app, I cannot verify or repair anything either. The buttons won't allow me to click on them. It also shows "Mac OSX Base System" which shows I have files and what not saved. I had been told that I need a new hard drive so I bought and manually installed a OWC SSD 240GB drive and when i booted the computer up it booted up yo the operating system fine with all my files and what not on there. After about twenty minutes, it froze again. I forced a shut down, restarted and the same thing happened. I am not able to choose my SSD to boot up, although thats probably because it doesn't have an operating system installed on it??

this isn’t Apple support; this is a user-to-user forum. We’re just fellow users of Apple products here.
If you want to boot from your SSD, then you should put the SSD where your HDD currently is, and put the HDD into the optical bay. (That setup will also get you the best performance.) At the moment, you’re still booting from your HDD. Note that you will need to format your SSD in Disk Utility [with the “Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)” format] so that you can install OS X onto it.
Since you have an Early 2011 model, it might or might not have originally come with grey installation DVDs. You will be able to find out whether it did or not by trying to use OS X Internet Recovery to install OS X onto your SSD. If it does not work, or if the installed OS turns out to be Snow Leopard, then it will have originally come with the DVDs, and you should purchase a replacement pair of DVDs from Apple or iFixit; those discs will have your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test and its iLife apps. If the installed OS turns out to be Lion, then it will not originally have come with the grey installation DVDs, and your Apple Hardware Test will be installed along with Lion, and your iLife apps will be downloadable from the Mac App Store.

Can't install OSX after I installed new hard drive

Okay so my 2009 MacBook pro would not start up, took it to the genius bar and they said I need a new hard drive. I installed a Western Digital blue Scorpio one from Best Buy and now when I turn on the computer I just get a flashing folder with a question mark. I've tried holding down c or option when rebooting, and rebooting with and without the OSX install DVD. I'm never given any options and it either starts up to a blank screen or to the question mark. What am I doing wrong?

You need to prep the drive first:
Drive Preparation and Installation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. Quit DU after formatting and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

Problem installing OS9 after OSX bugger up

Hey folks.
Ive got a G4 Tower that my brother got from his work. He wanted me to stick OSX on it which i did not realising you need to install the firmware update first. So ive tried to go reinstall OS9 on the drive in order to do this...herein lies the problem:
I havent seen my genuine OS9 discs for yonks, i have no idea where they are (plus they are the discs that came with my 400MHz iMac so they might not work anyhoo) so i opted for getting a copy through...questionable means. It all works fine, ive burnt the contents to a disc and can run the installer with no problems.
I connected the tower to my iBook using target mode and wiped the hard drive remotely using Disk Utility. There was no way i could use the drive otherwise, it just came up with the OSX boot screen then eventually the no entry sign. After wiping and reformatting the drive it comes up fine in target mode. I run the installer and it puts OS9 on the target disk with no problems, the installer finishes and everything. I went back into the the installer straight afterwards to confirm it worked and it said the version i had intalled was Z2-9.0.4 or something to that effect. When i restart the tower it comes up with the flashing folder that normally comes up when there is a system folder problem. I can access all the files on the drive when in target mode, but i cant boot up from the drive even though the OS installed with no problems.
Can anyone help with this problem, i know it was unethical to use a pirated copy but where else am i going to get a copy of OS9 these days?!

right update time:
i downloaded both of those updates (9.1/9.2.1) Went through the whole installation prcoess again starting with 9.0.4. That installed ok, straight afterwards i installed the 9.1 update. That had a small complaint about not being able to access a 'About Apple Script' file. It seemed like a non-core file so i just told it to carry on, which it did and it said the installer finished properly with no problems, and after checking in the installer app it said it had Z2-9.1 installed. Then i did the 9.2 update. Again it went smoothly, it had one hicup where it said something about a drive file not being right '-- Mac Help Guide.img' or something along those lines, again it seems like an unimportant file so i tell it to carry on. It comes up with a box saying something cannot be installed, i tell it to skip and it carries on. Eventually it finishes the installation, saying some software has not been installed, but it finishes none the less. Afterwards i go back into the installer and check to make sure it has worked and it says it has Z1-9.2.1 installed and when i went to install it again to make sure it asks if i want to remove/overwrite it or add more to it.
From this surely one would assertain that 9.2.1 has been installed on the machine. I went into the machine's system folder afterwards, looked up all the important files such as System, and it says that it is version Z1-9.2.1. HOWEVER when i go to restart the machine it comes up with the flashing question mark again. I dont get it! From accessing the machine through TD mode it says that it has 9.2.1 installed, if thats the case why isnt it loading the system folder properly?!

Flash no longer works after installing 9.0

After installing the newest Flash (9) on my iMac (OSX
10.4.10), it works in Firefox until I close Firefox but when I
restart Firefox it won't display flash content unless I install
flash again. It has also stopped working in Safari. Oddly, if I log
on as a different user it works just fine, including in Safari!
I've repaired permissions, I've used the flash uninstaller and
re-installed and it still behaves in this odd way. Any
suggestions?

At upgrades or major updates I have seen the behaviour that remote access via Server.app and remote access with Screen Sharing/Apple remote Desktop are reset to "not allowed". That only explains remote access not local access though.
