I have a big crossbar mark over my FF4 icon after I've installed and replaced FF3. When I try to open the software, I get "You can't open the application "Firefox" because it is not supported on this architecture." What's up with that?
Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html -
why does it keep asking me to install adobe flash player even after i have installed it once? Please help me.
No idea. What did the folks on the Adobe forums say when you posted there, since it's Adobe's software you're having trouble with?

Flashing folder icon after Mac mini has been sitting for a few hours
I leave my Mac mini running at time when I leave the office to let it install an update or just cause I forget to close it all down. When I come in the next morning, I have a flashing folder icon waiting for me.
Every single post on the forums talk about this issue at startup. This isn't the case for me; It didn't get shut down. A simple reboot solves it but still an annoying occurrence.

No sound from laptop speakers after Windows update installed Realtek HD Audio
Laptop is HP6626US with Windows Vista 32 bit SP2.
I had an error with Windows Update which was recently fixed. When I ran the update Realtek HD Audio was installed, among many other items. I now have the red circle white X by my speaker icon and do not get any sound out of internal speakers.
The Driver version is 6.0.1.6662
Direct X version 11.0
Audio Codec ALC 268
In Device Manager Under Sound, video and game controllers Realtek HD Audio is listed with Unimodem Half Duplex Audio Device if that is helpful.
Help Appreciated.Hello,PaulM25.
I see that you're having an issue with the sound on your notebook. Typically this means the Drivers don't exist and can also be considered as a hardware issue.
I have a couple of questions for you before we get going.
This is your notebook (HP Pavilion dv6626us Entertainment) correct?
Did this issue occur after you updated the audio drivers?
Now, you can go ahead and try these steps to resolve the issue.
Please completely remove the drivers for the Audio Device in Device Manager and “Control Panel – Programs and Features”.
Reboot the computer.
Please check if the device will be installed automatically after the computer starts. If not, please go to Device Manager and then navigate to the Audio Device, right click on it and choose “Update Driver software”
If the issue persists, please try to manually install the device driver which comes with the computer to see if it works. (You can also go to HP website to install the drivers. If you cannot find it, please give me the detail information of the device or the computer, such as brand, model, etc., I will help you search for the proper driver.)

MBP flashing blue screen after software updates
This morning, my 2011 MBP 17" 2.2GHz i7 (running 10.6.8 with all updates) suddenly started flashing between whatever I was doing, and a light blue screen every few seconds. (The same light blue screen that you get briefly when switching users and starting up). If I restarted, after a random period of a few minutes, the problem would return.
Things kept going during the blue periods (ie keystrokes worked, downloads continued etc)
I tried repairing the disc and permissions. I kept getting certain incorrect permissions coming up, which were related to coreimage IIRC. They were reported as being fixed, but as soon as I ran it again, the same errors came up.
Tried numerous restarts and repairs to no avail. Zapped the PRAM. Ended up reinstalling OSX from the original install discs (10.6.6), and the problem went away. I then did the first software update that came up, which was the 10.6.8 combo and a few other bits and pieces. Used the machine for a few hours with no problems.
I then ran software update again, which was:
Thunderbolt update 1.0;
Safari update 5.1.2;
Security Update 2011-006;
Java 10.6 update 6
The problem reappeared almost immediately, so I'm putting it down to one of those four updates. I'm leaning towards Safari, because on each occasion I got the blinking blue screen, safari was open (although in the background at least once). I'm also pretty sure that I updated Safari (alone) the night before the problems started.
Anyone else having this issue?
EDIT: I should add that my MacPro isn't having this issue, and it has all the same updates installed except for Safari (still running 5.1.1).I turned graphic card switching back on and ran the latest Safari off and on using youtube etc. with no problems. It used the HD 3000 card all the time for me. I have all the latest updates for 10.6.8 installed on my Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro. I've updated all my applications to eliminate the need for Rosetta. If the problem returns, do a safe mode startup (shift key and power key) and then a re-start to re-built your startup cache. You may have a startup item that's giving you a problem or one of your applications may be running in the back ground even after you quit it. Also, the permission errors never seem to go away no matter how often you run the repair permissions. This doesn't seem to mean anything. These "blue screen" problems probably have to do with with the Apple updates required to transition to Lion. Lion doesn't use Rosetta and you can't run power PC apllications. We had something that worked and Apple screwed it up.

Everything crashing after security update install
I just installed two upgrades last week per the auto update feature; I think one was security update and the other was iTunes update...I think. These come every week so I usually just install them and there's no problem.
After installing this time, every application I open shuts down after a few seconds. I can't use iTunes, Safari, Internet Explorer, even Help Viewer. I don't know what to do. My mac is useless this way.
Please help if you have any suggestions.
Thank you!
Steve in L.B.Hi Steve,
I have found that installing Security Updates in particular can be troublesome if permissions are not repaired before and after the update.
Additionally, did you install both updates concurrently or seperately?
If repairing permissions does not help with apps not opening properly try the steps in Dr. Smoke's FAQ "Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch"
hope that helps some and post back with comments or questions,

No more App Store Icon after last update?
After I updated to IOS5, I got a few new Icons on my 4th Gen Ipod Touch. However, there is no 'App Store' app anymore. How do I access the App Store now?
I tried through Safari but it says it cannot open the page.
TksYes, I have it again - I had two updates on Monday and even though I have run them, the icon still shows a "2".

AT2 Showing Only 2 Icons After Software Update
So I updated the software of my AT2 and it showed only two icons (settings & computer) & yes it was connected to the internet.
So I restored to factory settings and problem persists. Please help.
FYI, image:Thanks mate. I set the country in settings and logged in to my iTunes account which I assumed it would have done automatically after the update and all the icons have arrived.

Problem After iTunes Update Installed
Software Updates did its automatic check and I noticed the window on the desktop that said there was an update. I looked at the details and I thought it said itunes update 10.6.3. I read the details and installed it. After it installed, I restarted the computer and befor the aple appeared but there was still the gray screen I did NOT hear the tone. After about 30 seconds the apple appeared and the gear and it booted to the desktop.
I looked at the version of iTunes by going to About iTunes and the moving box said (althought it was really small this time) but I checked it again and it said 10.6 (4.0). However, I thought when the Updater said there was a newer version of iTunes, I thought it said version 10.6.3, with no paranthesis.
I restarted the MacBook Pro again, and still there was no tone but the gray window was present for about 10 secs then the Apple, and it booted to the desktop. I thought I should get a tone so I shut the MacBook Pro down and pressed the Power button to boot up in Safe Mode, but I did not hear the tone so I did not press the Shift key. I checked the version of iTunes that was installed (assuming a newer version was installed) and it is 10.6 (4.0).
I tured the computer off and tried to do a SMC Reset. I turned the MacBook Pro of left for a couple hours, came back, plugged the MagSafe Adapter in and tried to boot up the computer, no tone heard, the gray screen appeared for about 20 secs, then the Apple, then the gear and it booted to the desktop.
Something has been recently occuring. when I plug in the MagSafe Adapter initially, next to the battery up in the menu next to the Bluetooth icon it says "Not charging" but after about 5 secs it has the charging sign in the middle of the battery. Not sure if this is related or what. I tried to do an SMC Reset when I saw this "Not Charging" when I plugged in the Mag Safe but it did not change anything as far as when I plug in the Mag Safe Adapter it still initially says "Not Charging" for about 5 secs and then it goes away.
I am concerned what to do about hearing no tone and the version of iTunes I thought it said it was going to install but when I checked About iTunes it says 10.6 (4.0)
any help in this matter. I am not the best when it comes to computer knowledge.
thanksYour explanations have clarified some things (including one misconception I had from not reading your post carefully enough -- I thought you had "hard shut down" by holding down the power button, no in rereading your post, it sounds like you did not do that but rather shut down in an orderly way, that was my misconception).
I too was not aware of the Magsafe Power Supply issues, but it sounds like you would be well off to use that settlement check to obtain a new one. Hopefully that will resolve the charging issues you saw. I work somewhere where there are literally hundreds of Macbook Pro and Air laptops, all with these Magsafe adaptors, and I haven't seen any such complaints, but perhaps yours was part of a bad batch, it sounds like you're not the only one. (I have seen such chargers just wear out after 4-5 years, but then they just stop working altogether, versus the "charging/not charging" business you were seeing.)
I am going to surmise that none of the Magsafe issues have anything to do with iTunes because iTunes is just an application that is not related to the way the laptop charges. I suspect it is a coincidence that the iTunes update happened around the same time. The Magsafe behaviors probably would have manifested themselves even if you had not done the update.
Is your sound working in iTunes? Do you still not have boot up sound? If the answer to both of these questions is yes, you may want to read this Apple article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 and consider doing a reset of your PRAM and/or NVRAM. I noticed that PRAM does control some sound settings and "attention tones" of the computer (which might include a startup tone perhaps). Something to consider, it's hard to offer advice in these cases without being there in person to observe things. Good luck with all this.
Before you do any resets on PRAM or NVRAM, do re-check your sound settings to confirm that the mute box is not checked. When my Macbook Pro mute box is checked, I get no startup chime also. You might consider checking the mute box, restaring, then unchecking it again just to see if that matters. One last thing -- some other posts in the Discussions involved Macs without a startup chime and people got their chime back after disconnecting or fixing a peripheral that was plugged in via USB or Firewire. I don't understand why that would be, but that is what they reported -- something else for you to consider. -

EMac Fails to complete startup after security update install
I was running software update and My daughter used the emac to update her Ipod, putting software update in the background. after that i tried opening the system preferences but it did not open , I shut down the computer whick usually fixes problems!!. the computer comleted the boot up until ther blue progress bar was almost full and then it stopped. I was able to boot in single user mode and run fsck wityh no errors. I don't have a CD as the OS version 10.4 was a download update. I have a lot of data that I want to preserve. I was thinking I could start up with a system CD and copy a bunch of data to an external drive, and then reformat the internal drive and reload the system. Assuming I could buy a CD from apple. Has anyone had this problem and can suggest an alternate solution I ssuspect the boot code is corrupted or it is looking for something at the final steps of the boot process. can I edit the boot code using terminal? or am I SOL?
Message was edited by: stevedybleFrom what I have seen in the forums, this problem is most likely a software problem, possibly a corrupted preferences file. Your booting process is getting way past the boot code business. By the time that you get most of the way through the blue bar, the computer has loaded BSD unix and is loading the windowing system. So, I would not worry about trying to check the boot code and I think it very unlikely that you have a hardware problem. So, you should be able to get your data sooner or later.
One thing to try is booting in Safe Mode. If that works, then you will have isolated the problem - potentially to an extension, a login item or startup item (see What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?. With some more detective work, you could find the problem.
If that does not work, you could check out some of the ideas at Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier). Some of that information may not be appropriate for Tiger, but I would direct you to step 5 to remove the loginwindow and windowserver preference files.
If still no luck, many people would opt for an Archive and Install to re-install the operating system. This way of doing it allows you to save your user data (as opposed to an Erase and Install or other methods of installing). But, if you do not have your original Tiger install disc, you will have to get one.
And, if you go the route of re-installing, it is always a good idea to back up your data first before the re-install. This is insurance against something going really bad, which occasionally happens. The easiest way to back up would be to attach another Mac to your emac via a firewire cable and then boot the emac in Firewire target disk mode. This will bring the emac harddrive icon onto the desktop of the other Mac, and then you can copy items of your choosing.
I hope this helps,

White thick frame around desktop icons (after latest updates)
hi all,
i'm using xfce4 as DE, but, instead of xfdesktop as desktop icon manager, i keep using nautilus ('nautilus -n': run automatically at session login) 'cos i like some features xfdesktop doesn't have, such as: more flexible icons repositioning, icons resizing, etc..
my main problem is: after having installed last updates this morning (pacman -Syyu), and after re-executing nautilus, now all icons on desktop have a ugly and annoying thick (3-4 pxs) white frame around ...
googling about, i found out it could be a issue related to how nautilus manages thumbnails ....but unfortunately all threads are concerning gnome 2.x...NOT gnome 3.x
some of you encountered such a problem?
seems that nautilus treats and displays all desktop icons as images thumbnails
thanks

i've solved this way:
from: http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/os/Linux/distr/ … g/os/i686/
i downloaded: nautilus-3.6.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
so i downgraded nautilus (pacman -U nautilus-3.6.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz) from 3.6.3 prior to 3.6.1-1 (unfortunately i couldn't find 3.6.1-2 or 3.6.2 vers around)
restarted nautilus and everything is back to normal
ps: remember to add nautilus in IgnorePkg section (/etc/pacman.conf), otherwise it will be upgraded back again as soon as a pacman -Su is issued
i share with you this piece of information if it can be useful
